O Believers! Always Verify Accusations Before Taking Action

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

21 February 2012 Lefke, Cyprus

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmaani ‘r-Raheem. Kalimataani khafeefataani `ala ’l-lisaani thaqeelataani fi ’l-meezan subhaanallah wa bi-hamdihi subhaanallahi ’l-`azheem astaghfirullah.

With Shaykh Muhammad’s permission, I will say a few words. Prophet (s) mentioned these two words, “Subhaanallah wa bi-hamdihi subhaanallahi ’l-`azheem astaghfirullah,” and if you put them in the Scale they are heavier than all sins that human beings commit! There are four words in the Holy Qur’an; don’t lose them, read them one-hundred times a day: “Subhaanallah w ’alhamdulillah, wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah, w’Allahu Akbar, wa laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem,” as Prophet (s) said, “Whoever reads them will enter Paradise.”

I opened with this to say that everyone has sin, and the only ones who are ma`soom, infallible, are anbiyaa, prophets and Sayyidina Muhammad (s). The awliyaullah are not ma`soom but rather they are mahfoozeen, protected from falling into sin or a mistake, and even if they sin they are the ones protected by Allah because they are always remembering Him and they will be forgiven by Allah (swt). As Shaykh `Adnan mentioned last week, we have to be together and we have to be always one hand, and that is also a clear message for everyone to be together and to say one word, as Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold tight to Allah's rope and do not separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

But He (swt) also said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

Yaa ayyuhal-ladheena aamanoo in ja’akum faasiqun bi naba'in fa-tabayyinoo an tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin fatusbihoo `alaa maa fa`ltum naadimeen.

O you who believe! If a corrupt person comes to you with something wrong, ascertain the truth, unless you harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done.

(al-Hujurat, 49:6)

O Mu’mineen! If someone comes with a false accusation, don’t fall for it because you will regret it later. So in order not to fall (into that sin) the Holy Qur’an orders us to check. Don't say, “This person said that so I will believe him.” Allah (swt) prohibited that in the Holy Qur’an and said, don’t conspire or backbite:

وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ

Wa laa tajasassoo wa laa yaghtab b`adakum b`adan ayyuhibbu ahadukum an yaakulu lahma aakheehi maytan fa-karihtumooh.

And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would abhor it. (al-Hujurat, 49:12)

Would you like that someone would eat the flesh of his dead brother? Do you want to eat a corpse? You will be disgusted with yourself and also become disgusting in Allah's Eyes! This advice is for me, for you, and if you like it is for everyone, to know that always, if anything happens, first we have to check and investigate and find the truth, and then we make a decision; you cannot make a decision if you have not checked the truth! And I ask everyone, let us check ourselves, like the income tax officers come and audit you, first let us audit ourselves.

Once Mawlana told me, he was in seclusion for six months and Grandshaykh asked him to count how many bad characteristics there are. Prophet (s) said there are 800 bad characteristics and 500 obligations... Mawlana said to me, “I wondered how to count that many, now I can count around fifty, but how can I count 800? But in that khalwah I counted 187.” There are bad characters in all of us, but we should be careful so as not to increase them and we should try to audit ourselves and ask for forgiveness at night.

So, my message is that Allah (swt) granted our shaykh the power to know everything, as Prophet (s) said, u’teetu jawaami al-kalimi “I have the whole Qur’an in my heart” and `uloomu ‘l-awwaleena wa ‘l-aakhireen, “Allah gave me Knowledge of Before and After.” And when I give you that verse from the Holy Qur’an you will be amazed. Perhaps you are read it every day but without understanding it:

إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا لِيَغْفِرَ لَكَ اللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِن ذَنبِكَ

Inna fatahna laka fathan mubeena li-yaghfira lakallahu maa taqaddama min dhanbika.

Verily, We have granted thee a manifest victory that Allah forgives your past and future sins.

(Surat al-Fath, 48:1)

Prophet (s) was asking for more and more, and Allah (swt) said, “Yaa Muhammad! We have granted you a great opening; we have expanded your chest!” Then immediately in the following ayah, He said, li-yaghfira lakaLlahu maa taqaddama min dhanbika wa maa ta-akhkhara,“For Allah to forgive your sins from before and after.” How can this be? If you want to think about it literally, this is contradicting the first ayah. How is Allah (swt) saying in the Qur’an, “Yaa Muhammad, after I expanded your chest and gave you what I did not give to anyone, I am forgiving you from you past and future sins”? Prophet (s) has no sins, as he is ma`soom!

Awliyaullah inherited that secret, which means, “Allah (swt) forgave everyone of your ummah, O Muhammad, because you are carrying the whole ummah, everyone!” That includes those who came before Muhammad (s) from the time of Adam (a), and whoever came after Muhammad (s). “I gave all of them freedom from Hellfire because of your shafa`ah!” This is a long discussion that could go on for hours and hours, going into ahadeeth and different ayahs of Holy Qur’an; however, I will briefly mention about Surah ash-Sharh, which you all read every Thursday. Allah (swt) said:

(O Muhammad!) Have We not expanded your chest for you and relieved you of your burden that weighed down your back? Have We not raised your remembrance? (Surat ash-Sharh, 94:1-4)

Wa rafa`na laka dhikrak, “We raised you (so) high (that) everyone has to make salawaat on you, even angels in Paradise!” Wa wada`ana anka wizrak, alladhee anqada dhahrak, “and We have taken from you what you are carrying on your back,” which means, “We took away all the sins that make you worry every day about your ummah.”

Awliyaullah are inheriting these secrets and every moment they are burdened because they are carrying their followers--good and bad, halfway followers, sinful followers--on their backs. That’s why Allah (swt) put awliya in seclusion, in a situation which is a cleaning process, but it is not for them as they are already clean! They inherit from Prophet (s), but they are carrying us.

Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon.

Behold! Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surat al-Yunus, 10:62)

Since they are carrying us, we must take advantage of what they are doing for us and hold together like one hand.

Yaa ayyuha ’n-naasu innaa khalaqnaakum min dhakarin wa unthaa waj a`alnakum shu`ooban wa qabaaila lita`arafoo inna akramakum `inda Allaahi atqaakum inna Allaaha `aleemun khabeeru.

O Mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has taqwa. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (al-Hujuraat, 49:13)

Here we are all from different tribes. The one who is near is the best.

Yaa ayyuha ’n-naasu innaa khalaqnaakum min dhakarin wa unthaa waj a`alnakum shu`ooban wa qabaaila lita`arafoo inna akramakum `inda Allaahi atqaakum inna Allaaha `aleemun khabeeru.

O Mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you, and Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Al-Hujurat, 49:13)

You are saying, “All of us are praying for Mawlana Shaykh,” but Wahhabis also pray the five prayers, so what’s the difference between Ahlu ‘l-Sunnah and Wahhabis when both pray, both fast, both make adhaan. What is the difference? The difference is their `aqaaid, beliefs. You think what you are doing is correct, but it might not be, so audit yourself and don’t throw words haphazardly, but make sure you know that there are people around that audit you.

They ask, “Does Mawlana know everything?” They say, “Yes.” Then they say, “If he sees everything, why he doesn’t expose those who are doing things that are unacceptable?” People can ask this, but I can I ask, does Prophet (s) know everything? Of course he does! Why did he (s) pray towards Masjid al-Aqsa for eighteen months when before that he prayed towards Mecca, but then turned his face toward al-Aqsa in Jerusalem? Because he knows everything!

Walan tardaa `ank al-yahoodu wa laa ‘n-nasaaraa hattaa tattabi`a millatahum qul inna huda ’Llaahi huwa ‘l-hudaa wa laini ’t-taba`ta ahwaahum ba`da allathee jaa’aka mina al-`ilmi maa laka min ’Llaahi min waliyyin wa laa naseer.

Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with you unless you follow their form of religion. Say: "The guidance of Allah, that is the (only) guidance." Were you to follow their desires after the knowledge which has reached you, then you would not find either protector or helper against Allah.

(Al-Baqara, 2:120)

He was praying towards Masjid al-Aqsa, but Allah ordered him, “Enough, yaa Muhammad! They are not going to follow you.” Why did he (s) take a guide from Mecca to Madinah during the hijrah? Why did he take a guide to Mi`raaj, to al-Aqsa? He took a guide from Heaven, Jibreel (a), to guide him to al-Aqsa. He (s) is telling us, “Keep a guide.” You need to always be guided towards the truth. The shaykh wants you to know your mistakes by yourself, he will not expose you. Didn’t Prophet (s) know that his uncle was opening a big ditch and inviting Prophet (s) for lunch so he would fall in the ditch? Yes, he knew. ... Don't fall in the ditch of awliya because it will be difficult to pull you out! Mawlana said many times, when you approach the sultan you are approaching fire, so don’t approach too much as you will be under fire!

As we said at the beginning, aren’t Wahhabis praying? They are, and they might be they praying better than we are praying, with contemplation and meditation, but Grandshaykh asked one time in seclusion in the diwan of awliya, “Yaa Rasoolullah, why are you keeping them?” Prophet (s) said, “They are the best for their time to make ignorance come quickly,” because Sayyidina Mahdi (a) doesn’t come until ignorance fills the dunya! So we need them now. Be careful! If the shaykh needs you now, later he might leave you when the truth comes.

No one around the world likes Wahhabis, but Prophet (s) is leaving them in his masjid three or four meters near him. They are so near, but there is something else prepared for them! So we must not fall into the trap of this question, “Does Shaykh know everything?” Why (ask this)? He does know everything, but he leaves things (to take their due course) and he is checking.

Why did Allah (swt) allow Iblees to come into Paradise? When He asked Iblees to make sajdah to Adam (a), what happened? Iblees did not make sajdah, but Allah left him there, and He knew his presence would be bad, so although Iblees is cursed, still Allah (swt) left him in Paradise! He cursed him and gave him a chance in Paradise. He came as a snake to trick Adam (a), saying, “I love you, you are my friend! Come, eat from this tree and you will live forever.” He made him eat, because Allah (swt) was testing Adam (a); will he be patient or not, or will he listen to Iblees or to Allah?

Didn’t Allah (swt) know that Nimrod will burn Sayyidina Ibraheem (a)? Allah (swt) said, “Catch him, leave him in the fire to test him.” What happened? He sent Jibreel (a) to Ibraheem (a) in the end, and Jibreel asked, “Do you need anything?” Ibraheem (a) said, “I don’t need you because Allah knows what I need.” Then Allah made the fire “bardan wa salaaman,” cool and peaceful for Sayyidina Ibraheem (a).

So don't think that because you are very near to awliya that you are at a high level, when actually you might be at the lowest level!

Prophet (s) said:

Rubba ash`ath aghbara law aqsama `ala Allaahi la-abbarah.

There may be a disheveled, dusty person who, if he swears an oath by Allah, Allah will fulfill it.

(Muslim)

Prophet (s) said, “It might be, verily, for sure, that a curly-haired, disgusting, greasy, dusty, dirty person asks Allah for one thing and Allah will respond to him.” Allah (swt) looks at the heart, not at the flattery of those who are petting. It might be you are far away.

There was one big wali who said, “When I die, before you bury me take my turban and throw it up and the one whose head it lands is my khalifah.” They threw it and it went round and around, and then it fell on the head of the one who cleans the shoes. Those big scholars thought it may be a mistake so they threw it again, and it went round and round and fell on the same person’s head. Don't think that the one who is near is the one who is promoted; no, they might be exiled! Too many presidents and leaders around the world bring one person and in the end they sack him.

O Believers! O Muslims! in jaa`akum faasiqun bi naba'in fa-tabayyinoo an tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin fatusbihoo `alaa maa fa`ltum naadimeen.

If someone ignorant came to you with a message, don't believe him until you have checked! (49:6)

I forgive everyone from the bottom of my heart and I ask everyone to forgive me, except those who created (fitna) and falsely accused some ones (mureeds) of something, and these people were beaten up for no excuse. Many of you know that person who was beaten with a baseball bat on his hands and legs, and he didn’t do anything wrong and the next day he was released. For what (why was he falsely accused)? For what?!!

Be careful, as we are in Mawlana Shaykh’s presence! I will never forgive those people, even if they come and apologise. May Allah (swt) forgive us. But still I feel bad, and I say may Allah forgive them also and may Allah forgive everyone, and may Allah guide everyone to the right direction.

(Du`a)

Fatihah.

And Abu Hurayra (r) said:

Before the Last Days there will be years of khuda`a, conspiracy, where Muslims conspire against other Muslims, where leaders conspire against other leaders (presidents and kings), and the one who says the truth is exposed is as if he is not speaking truth, and they believe the liar is a good person.
