Allah Does Not Like When

We Have Bad Doubts about Others

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

24 January 2014 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

O mu’mins, believers! There are many issues that Allah (swt) has mentioned in Holy Qur'an, to unite. Allah likes unity for people to come together, not to run away from each other. He said:

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

And what is that rope? It is not a physical rope, it is a rope that everyone holding it will be saved and Allah described that rope in Holy Qur'an, where He said:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

“If you really love Allah, hold to the rope,” Allah is saying to the Muslims, to the believers, “If you really Allah (swt) follow Muhammad (s)!” as whatever the Prophet (s) gave to you, take it:

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

Wa maataakumu ’r-rasoolu fakhudhoohu wa maa nahaakum `anhu fantahoo.

Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

Don't use your mind to judge if you should take it or not; if it is Islamic, take it! Don’t put doubts in the minds of the people as Allah doesn't like doubts.

Inna ba`da ’dh-dhanni ithm.

Suspicion in some cases is a sin. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:12)

O believers, He said, “O mu’min.” Those who say Shahadah, “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah,” are mu'min.

O you who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible). (Surat al-Hujurat, 49:12)

Too many of the doubts are wrong. Might be you are doubting something which might be correct, but most of them, Allah is saying in Holy Qur’an, are incorrect and some ot these doubts will take you to sin. So why we have to doubt? Because if we see something straightforward, we follow, ittiba`. Allah ordered us to follow Sayyidina Muhammad (s), not anyone else! And what is religion? The whole religion is advice. The Prophet (s) said:

الدين نصيحة

Ad-deenu naseeha.

Religion is advice.

Islam is advice, imaan is advice, ihsaan is advice, so we have to take the advice of what Allah (swt) is saying in Holy Qur'an and what the Prophet (s) is saying in the hadith. Prophet (s) said, “Our religion is advice.” The Sahaabah (r) asked, “Advice to whom?” I want to advise you or you or you on what? He said, “First is to advise each other on Allah.” The advice must take you to the Way that Allah likes, to unite.

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

Don't separate, make groups. We are a very efficient target of the enemy when we separate, and by ‘enemy’ I mean Shaytan. When we are separated he throws doubts and Allah is saying don’t doubt, so don't throw doubts. Abu Hurayrah (r) related from the Prophet (s) that he said:

‏ ‏إياكم والظن

Iyyakum wa ‘zh-zhhann.

I am warning you not to have too many doubts.

Allah said in Holy Qur’an, “Don’t doubt.” Might be one is correct but most of them are wrong. Beware of the trap of Shaytan by having doubts! What is the Prophet (s) saying?

Iyyakum wa’zh-zhann fa-inna azh-zhanna akdhab al-hadeeth.

Beware of suspicion, for it is the worst of false tales. (Narrated by Abu Hurayrah, Bukhari)

Zhann is the most untrue speech. When you have doubt, trying to justify it in your mind will make everyone fall into untruth and to be with Shaytan. Allah (swt) said:

Wa laa tajasassoo.

And spy not on each other behind their backs. (Surat al-Hujurat, 49:12)

Don’t spy on each other, Allah will curse us. Allah does not like people to spy on each other, who say, “This is what he did,” or “What did he do with that one?” Try to veil it if you see something wrong from your brother. One of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes is as-Sattar, the Veiler; He veils all our mistakes. Does Allah expose our mistakes? It might be on Judgment Day that Allah (swt) with His Rahmah will not expose our mistakes. He is as-Sattar, The One Who Veils Everything. “That is one of My Holy Names, to Veil Mistakes,” so veil the mistakes of your brother. Islam is to veil each other, not to expose that this one did this and this one did that. Forgive, because if you forgive Allah will forgive us. And don't spy on each other.

Wa laa tanaafasoo wa laa tahasadoo.

Do not compete with each other and do not envy each other. (Muslim)

Wa laa tajassasoo.

(O you who have attained faith!) And do not spy upon one another. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:12)

Don’t get jealous and try to compete with your brother, with their businesses. If you open something for yourself after learning from your brother and then you take his customers, Allah does not like it. If someone opens a company and teaches you how to deal with it and you go and open a similar company after you learned from him, that is using his name and method, does Allah like that? Don't get jealous of each other. What Allah wrote for you in the Day of Promises you are going to get and what is not written you will never get. Don’t think what is in your hand is for you! If it is yours, you will get it. Don’t think what is in your hand is for you. It is Allah who put it in your hand. If Allah takes it, it is written and if Allah puts it, it is written.

Don't get jealous from each other! If Allah makes one rich and one poor, Allah has wisdom in that. Some pious person asked this question, “Why did Allah make someone rich and someone poor?” First of all, to ask that question is maa laa yaa`nee, not your business! It is Allah’s Will. So that wise man still gave an answer, “If Allah gave that richness to the poor one he might run from Islam and if He gave the poverty to the rich one he might run from Islam, but He made it like that so the rich one is able to accept richness and the poor one is able to put up with poverty,” so both are on the right track.

Allah said, “Wa laa tabaaghadoo, don't hate each other.” If you see your friend successful, you hate him. Why do you hate someone because he is successful? You want to eat what he eats! The food's taste is only from the first three inches of the tongue and after that nothing, and all sickness is from this mouth, from this tongue. The tongue makes you doubt and makes you to speak bad about others. If you keep (hold) your tongue (don’t speak), you keep yourself. Some people have to eat through tubes; they inject through their stomachs and they have no taste, but all food is like that from the throat to the belly, with no taste. This (tongue) is only a small part, if you are able to control it, you control yourself, you control your ego.

Wa laa tadaabaroo, and don't turn your back on each other. When you see your brother, give him salaams even if you have a problem with him. Don't increase hate between each other. If you do like that, you will be Allah’s servants, brothers and sisters. If you do that, Allah will be happy with that and Allah will give us more.

Al-Muslimu aakhu ‘l-Muslim.

Ibn `Umar, the son of Sayyidina `Umar (r) said that the Prophet (s) said:A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. (Bukhari)

I am a brother to you and you to me; everyone is a brother to each other. He didn’t say ‘mu’min’ but He said ‘Muslim,’ which is general. And not everyone is a perfect mu'min, but everyone is a perfect Muslim.

Qaalati ’l-a`raabu aamanna qul lam tuminoo walakin qooloo aslamnaa wa lamaa yadkhuli ’l-imaanu fee quloobikum.

“Don’t say, ‘We are mu’min,’ say, ‘We are Muslim.’” Until imaan enters the heart, apply it and follow what the Prophet (s) brought.

Yes it is correct, until imaan enters your heart then you are a mu’min. That means until we do what the hadith states, if you apply it then you are a mu’min; if you don’t apply it, it will be a struggle between us and our ego. To apply it inshaa-Allah in the future, but the intention is to try to apply it, because Allah said whatever Prophet (s) gave you, follow it, don’t leave it.

The Prophet (s) said, “The Muslim is brother of the Muslim. He must not oppress him,” so don't speak about your brother wrong things, it means as Muslims, and be sure you keep with them a rope of love and respect, then you will be safe in dunya and Akhirah.

If anyone relieves a Muslim believer from one of the hardships of this worldly life, Allah will relieve him of one of the hardships of the Day of Resurrection. If anyone makes it easy for the one who is indebted to him (while finding it difficult to repay), Allah will make it easy for him in this worldly life and in the Hereafter, and if anyone conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah helps His slave as long as he helps his brother.

(Narrated by Abu Hurayrah, Muslim)

Salaam `alaykum.
