After Salat al-Fajr
Three Things That Erase Sins, Three Things That Destroy, Three Things That Save and Three Things That Elevate One's Status
A`udzubillah mina ‘sh-shaythāni ‘r-rajīm.
A few words inshaAllah. A few words for the visitors. Otherwise, I would not have come to pray Fajr here. There are no locals. Seventy to eighty percent of the congregation that comes are from out of town, out of the country. We have Dallas, India, Kentucky, Dallas again, Missouri, Maine. MashaAllah, the United States is here, representatives from every state. Not in congress, in Dhikrullah , in the Dhikrullah assembly.
May Allah (swt) allow your states to prosper; make your inner sides prosper; and your outer sides prosper. May Allah (swt) allow your minds to grow, your hearts to grow with Noor. Noor from the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the love of the awliya of Allah. Alhamdulillah.
We have people coming, that's why we pray Fajr with them. That's also a blessing for us. MashaAllah, Salma ran out of her apartment. You know Salma, our Salma? She's from Dallas. They moved here a few years ago. Her mother told me that when she told Salma that at 2 a.m. we were going to pray Fajr, she jumped out of her bed. She was 15, 16 years old.
He sits in the back, enjoying– where are our Shuyukhs? Where are the elders, the senior disciples? What senior disciples? One day a week they can’t come. It’s a shame. It’s a shame. The kids are sleeping, the wife is sleeping, or the husband, whatever. What’s the reason?
Look, people are coming from Kentucky. Louisville, Kentucky. They drove. How many hours? Ten hours, I think. Six? Oh, that's close. We have to come to you. I heard there's a cave down there, Kentucky. What is it? Mammoth Cave? 400 miles in length all underground. You should check it out Ali. Next time your truck goes down there, go to Mammoth Cave. May Allah (swt) accept your visit.
Messenger of Allah (s). Our teacher is the Prophet (s). Don't forget that. Everyone has taken from him. Anbiya, Awliya. From big to small. No problem. Everyone has taken from the knowledge of the Messenger of Allah (s). Everyone has taken from the ocean of the Prophet (s). As Sayyidina Imam al-Busayri said, some of them took a little and some of them took as much as they could carry.
What did the Prophet (s) say? He said there are three expiations, three things that you do, that they will... There's a nice English word, but whatever it is, I don't want to say something wrong, but basically it's a means of forgiveness. It wipes away all your sins, whatever mistakes you've made, whatever mistakes we've made. Those three things wipe away all sins. One of them is “take steps to the mosque,” to move your feet towards the congregation.
He came from far away, six hours by car. Your father probably came 24 hours by plane.we say go ahead. When you move your feet towards the congregation, for the Subuh prayer, say, for the Isha prayer, to come to this mosque, to that mosque, for this dhikr, for that dhikr. These are all means for all mistakes to be forgiven. Not only that, but also for your level to be raised. Where are they? In bed, following online. Alhamdulillah, may Allah also give you from the mercy that He has given us all.
Thalathata kaffārat, The Prophet (s) said, "There are three who forgive sins." One of them is we say go ahead, to move your feet to the congregation, to the mosque, to dhikr, to the prayer room, wherever you go.
The second is I swear by God, perform ablution properly, perfectly, as well as possible. Did you perform ablution properly today? Perform ablution properly. It is also a means for all mistakes, all sins to be forgiven. And third, waiting from prayer to prayer, Intizhāruṣ-ṣalāti ba'da’ ṣ-ṣalāh. Look, the Messenger of God (s) opened the door for you.
Oh people, we all make mistakes. We do our best to know what to do, right? Everyone is concentrating, “Okay, what should I do now?” They bring all their knowledge, all the events and circumstances, and they say, “We want to do this.” Okay, if you do something right, alhamdulillah. But if you do something wrong, if you do something wrong, the Messenger of Allah (saw) opens the door.
Three things if you do them, they forgive mistakes, forgive sins, because Allah forgives. One of them is come to the mosque. So once a week come, move your feet towards the congregation. Waiting from prayer to prayer. From Fajr, you perform Fajr prayer, now you wait for Zhuhr. From Zhuhr you wait for Asr. From Asr you wait for Maghrib. Allah (swt) is forgiving of all that you have done intentionally or unintentionally; but do not do anything intentionally. Do not oppose Allah (swt), especially when you know that He sees you. But we do it.Astaghfirullah al-‘Azheem. What can you do?
So, waiting for the next prayer, taking ablution perfectly, correctly, and moving, walking towards the mosque. They are a means of forgiveness that will be done by Allah (swt).
And he (s) said, Ṭsalat muhlikāt, three things will destroy you. This is one hadith. So, three things destroy you, three things save you, three are means for forgiveness, and the last one, three degrees that raise you to a higher level.
So what will destroy you? shuhḥun muṭā‘ (شُحٌّ مُطَاعٌ), which is stinginess or greed. Another term is pinching pennies or holding on tightly. That will destroy you. shuhḥun muṭā‘, which means someone asks you to spend in the way of Allah (swt) but you say ‘no.’
“Can you give ten dollars a month?” “No, I can’t.” “How about twenty-five dollars a month to support the mosque?” “I can’t.” “How about five dollars a month?” “I can’t.” They can’t even give a dollar a month. They come to the mosque, they enjoy it, but supporting the mosque? That is ‘haram’. The Prophet (s) said, "That will destroy you." That will cause you to perish, they say, to come to a bad ending.
Masha Allah. They promise, “Yes, we will give $25, we will support the mosque.” But when the time comes, “Oh sorry, we don’t have it. We don’t have it.” Then they buy shoes for $50, $100. They go see Max… what’s his name? Max Amini? They go see another stand-up comedian and spend $100 on a ticket, spend another $50 on food and whatever they spend there on Coke and Sprite, because they’re not allowed to drink anything else. They have money to spend on things like that.
It is shuhḥun muṭā'. Save your money. muṭā', meaning your ego says, “No, save your money for your own pleasure.” How can you spend it anywhere else? It will destroy you. Ultimately, it will destroy you.
Wa hawā muttaba'(وهًى مُتَّبَعٌ) and the lusts that are followed. So, they follow their lusts. That will destroy the man or the woman. They will become stingy, and that will destroy the person.
And others: and I will bring you the sea(وَإِعْجَابُ الْمَرْءِ بِنَفْسِهِ) which is admiring yourself. Seeing yourself great, seeing yourself handsome, seeing yourself beautiful, seeing yourself strong. Admiring yourself. That is also not allowed in Islam.
They say, “What is ṭarīqah? What is ṭarīqah?” The ṭarīqah is this! These salafis, they come against the ṭarīqah. Why do you oppose the ṭarīqah? The ṭarīqah teaches you: spend, don’t be stingy. The ṭarīqah teaches you: don’t follow your desires. Don’t follow your desires that will destroy your family. You are destroying yourselves. The ṭarīqah teaches you: don’t admire yourself, be humble. Don’t be arrogant, don’t be haughty.
They oppose ṭarīqah. They said, "What is ṭarīqah? What is ṭarīqah?" This ṭarīqah is for that. To find out what it is shuhḥun muṭā', what is the stinginess that is obeyed, wa hawā muttaba', what is the passion that is followed, and what is self-admiration, to see yourself as the greatest that has ever been created. Do you know that some people, they think that they are the best out there?
The ṭarīqah teaches you to humble yourself. Yes, you may be great. Alhamdulillah, people say, they see you, but you – within yourself say, “Ya Rabbee I apologize. This is Your mercy. This is a gift from You, this is a favor from You. And of course there are people who are superior to me.”
What did Sayyidina Sulaiman (as) and Dawud (as) say?
Sayyidina Sulaiman (as) was given the kingdom of the earth, all of it. And he was given so many things that other people could not get. What did he say?wa qālā al-ḥamdu lillāhi in Surah Sād, if I'm not mistaken. They said, "Ya Rabbee thank you.” Alhamdulillah, "thanks and praise to Allah (swt)” alladhī faḍḍalanā, “Who has favored us above many of His believing servants.”
So that is the preference of Allah (swt). Allah prefers you to be great people. It is not because of you. You say, “Ya Rabbee thank you,” as Sayyidina Sulaiman (as) and Sayyidina Dawud (as) said. The Anbiya, they were teachers. They taught humanity. If Allah (swt) prefers to give you something, you should say, “Ya Rabbee thank you. You prefer me to that person. You prefer me to this person. That is from You. Thank you.”
al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī faḍḍalanā 'alā kathīrin min 'ibādihil-mu'minīn.
All praise be to God who has made us more than many of His believing servants. (Surat an-Naml, 27:15)
Ya Rabbee thank you. You have surpassed us in many ways than Your good servants. And they said, "Ya Rabbee allow us to thank You."
Sayyidina Sulaiman (as) said:
rabbi awzi‘nī an ashkura ni‘mataka
My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your blessings. (Surat an-Naml, 27: 19)
"Ya Rabbee allow me to say thank you for your favors that you have given me, and the favors that you have given to my parents, and that I am doing something good, beneficial, and with your grace, allow me to be your good servant."
So what does the Tariqah teach you? Don’t be stingy – one. Don’t follow your desires – two. And don’t be proud. So this will destroy you. So you should know. What will destroy you are three things – we counted them.
There are also three that will save you. Three things will save you, ṭsalāṯun munjiyāt. Three will save you. The Prophet (s) said, Al-‘adlu fī al-ghaḍabi wa al-riḍā,” to be just when you are angry, and just when you are happy, when you are happy. When you are angry, you must not abandon justice. You may be cruel and tyrannical.
So, justice when you are angry, justice when you are happy. If you are just — it will save you. It will save you from many things, problems that will arise later. Many people react. Do you react when you are angry? Oh, I react, you react, everyone reacts. And then you say, “Oh, I wish I had not said this word.” “Oh, I wish I had not done this action.” “Oh, I wish, I wish…” That is over. You have to be just. It will save you when you are angry.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught al-‘adlu fī ’l-ghaḍabi wa ’r-riḍā: just in anger and in satisfaction. Wa ’l-qaṣdu fī ’l-faqri wa ’l-ghinā and be moderate when you are poor and moderate when you are rich. Don’t be stingy when you are poor. You don’t give anything to your family, “Don’t buy them any food. We are poor, we can’t afford it.” Starvation, we can’t do that. And don’t be wasteful when you are rich. You have to be moderate. Moderation or simplicity, it will save you.
May Allah reward you abundantly and grant you peace, and to fear Allah (swt) secretly and openly. When you are alone, no one is looking at you, you should be aware, and you should fear Allah (swt). And when you are in the open, you should also be aware and fear Allah (swt), fearing that you will not do something wrong. These three things will save you.
If you do something wrong in public, you have embarrassed yourself. How many people have embarrassed themselves in public? They have done something wrong, and you see their name all over the papers, you see their name on people's tongues. That's embarrassing. So when you are in public, fear Allah. When you fear Allah, you don't do anything wrong. You protect your honor. When you are alone, fear Allah too. Because if you don't fear Allah in private, Allah will find you and expose you. There will come a time when you will be known, if you do not repent.
That is why we come for istighfar at dawn. We come to pray and ask forgiveness from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. That is why we say, “I will pray for the end of my illness. And this is the time al-ashar, sahur time—this is the best time to ask for forgiveness from Allah (swt).
So, three things will destroy you — I hope you remember. Three will save you. Three are the means to forgiveness. And three will elevate you.
What will increase your status — as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in that long hadith — is: iṭ‘āmu al-ṭa‘ām, feeding people. So Dr. Asma, every Sunday morning, he feeds the people. Then that will increase its degree.
While others? “No, we just came to eat. Let someone else prepare it.” “That is your place.” “Do I have to bring food to the assembly? I don’t want to.” If you do, your status will be raised. Hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Our problem is ignorance,al-jahl. We don't understand, we don't read, we don't see, we don't hear. We just do what we want. That's why it's dangerous to follow our passions.
The Prophet ﷺ said, he ordered: iṭ‘āmu al-ṭa‘ām, feed. That's one. So Dr. Asma — MashaAllah — her status has gone up now.
Wa ifshā’u al-salam — spreading greetings, spreading peace. When you spread peace, your status rises before people. Your status rises before Allah subhanahu wa ta‘ala. The Prophet of the Muslims said, “Spread peace.” Have you heard that? No! Why? Because we see the Muslims, MashaAllah...
They are trying to spread peace everywhere. Divine teachings spread peace — with the tongue, spread peace with the hands. When you shake hands, why do you shake hands? You are telling them, "I have no weapon in my hand. I have no knife, no sword, nothing. I open my hand." That is a sign of peace.
Ifshā’u ’s-salam— spreading greetings — is something that will raise your status, O Muslims. And the third:wa al-ṣalātu bi al-layl wa al-nāsu niyām— night prayer while people are sleeping. So, good news for you: your status will be raised every night if you stay awake and pray at night. When Adam (pointing to a congregation member–trans.) was sleeping, you were praying. Your status rose. His status also rose. Pray!
Look at the Prophet ﷺ, the perfect teacher. Where is our position compared to him? Not found anywhere. May God forgive us.
So, three things will destroy you: stinginess, following your desires, and arrogance. Look at the arrogant person — whoever is arrogant, people will slowly move away from him because they don’t like such a person. People don’t like arrogant people. People prefer those who are humble, who are friendly.
So, stinginess, lust, and pride — they will all destroy you.
What will save you?The Munjiyāt — saviours: justice will save you; moderation will save you and the fear of Allah will save you.
Then, what are the means of forgiveness? Three things: “waiting for the next prayer, performing ablution perfectly, and walking towards the congregation.”
And three more things will raise your status: feeding people, spreading peace, and the last is “praying at night when everyone is asleep.”
That's enough — twelve things.
If you can follow these twelve things, you have fully entered the ṭarīqah. That is the inner path. That is what the Prophet ﷺ showed you: the inner qualities, the inner state of man. Not just the outer state, but the inner state.
If you can fix that, that's it. ṭarīqat taṣfiyatu’n-nafs — it is the path of purification of the soul — to purify your inner state.
May Allah (swt) allow us to follow His instructions 100%. May Allah (swt) allow us to follow his sunnah, outwardly and inwardly, 100%. May Allah (swt) make us with him and with his Holy Family, as well as his noble Companions, the Awliya and Anbiya, and the pious people - both in this world and in the Hereafter - all under their banner.
Take refuge under the banner of the Prophet ﷺ. Don't run towards other flags, flags other than him. Run towards the banner of the divine message, towards the banner of the divine messenger. Bi ḥurmati ‘l-ḥabīb (saw) and bi sirri Sūrati ‘l-Fātiḥah
