Physical and Spiritual Balance Comes with Fasting

Sultan al-Awliya

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani

7 July 2011 Lefke, Cyprus

Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. I am intending to fast today to make my Lord and His most beloved servant, the Seal of Prophets, Sayyidina Muhammad (s), happy with me! Some unfortuante people never find anything to eat or drink. Those who train by fasting may become sabrun, patient, keeping oneself for the honor of the Lord of Heavens. That is our intention when we fast, and without an intention nothing is going to be accepted. Our intention is to make our Lord happy with us, then He will make us happy here and Hereafter.

We are ghanima (prosperous from battle), training our bodies through fasting and making a good physical balance for all our organs. And we are saying, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. By the Name of Allah Almighty, All Merciful, I am intending not to eat or drink and to be patient, for the honor of the Lord of Heavens.”

We are also trying to be like angels that never eat or drink, but who only glorify their Lord, their Creator. We intend to try and make our Lord happy with us and we are trying to be, even for some time, like angels. That is hilye, characteristics of Sayyidina Muhammad (s): to have a diet, to achieve a balance in our physical being, and to save our bodies from so many useless matters. We use fasting to become healthy because when we fast our bodies save energy.

If you are fasting, our bodies are not like when we were young; we are fat now and some have become one that it is difficult for him to move, walk, run or do many things. He is always accustomed to save what he is eating and drinking (not burning calories), and his body changes. First we have youngsters’ bodies, but after a while they will change into an ugly shape. The one who fasts has a balance with every organ in its original form, but the one who is eating and drinking without thinking, his body will become ugly. Nowadays women and men are ugly. While young one’s body is nice, but after a while it becomes like a bull that overeats and becomes much bigger than its normal body.

Therefore, all orders of Allah Almighty have countless wisdom, but people are not taking care to follow them; they are mostly slaves of their egoistic desires, which makes a person’s physical appearance ugly, and spiritually they get less until they no longer desire holy things. Therefore, it is very important for people to know such wisdom so they will always be lovely, up to the end of their lives. Do you understand?

Fatihah.
