The Best and Worst of People According to Hadith

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

3 March 2013 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

(Du`a of Friday khutbah.)

O Muslims, believers! To follow is not easy, one day to fall or one day to survive is most common. To be fully, 100% following the sunnah of the Prophet (s), which we have too, is difficult in the sense that the Prophet (s) as someone came to him and said, “Yaa Rasoolullah! The principles of Islam are too much on me. Give me something easy to do of worship,” and the Prophet (s) said, "Keep your tongue moving in Dhikrullah," not to backbite or spread bad rumors, but make dhikrullah, do salawaat, read Holy Qur'an or do your work. But today Muslims, the Prophet (s) said to them as Allah said:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

And we try to follow, but there are too many obstacles, but Allah loves His servant when, even though there are too many obstacles in front of him, he moves!

And the Prophet (s) said, “I am the one who had the most obstacles of all people. There is too much heaviness from the ummah on my shoulders!” He sees what we are doing daily, seeing who is right and who is wrong. Doesn’t that make him have a burden?

Allah said to the Prophet (s), “Yaa Muhammad! I know you have such a heavy burden that your back cannot carry it, but I am taking that burden away from you!” because the burden of the ummah is too much! The Prophet (s) was seeking Allah's intervention to raise that heaviness from him, and Allah (swt) said, “I am expanding your chest, yaa Muhammad, to carry the burden of the ummah.” It is not something easy; it means that it is something heavy. Allah said, “I am taking it and I am relieving you of that burden, and whenever a burden comes, I take it out and I forgive them.”

What is the burden? It is the burden of the ummah, because the Prophet (s) is infallible, he has no sins or mistakes, so they are our mistakes, and Allah mentioned in Holy Qur’an that He is taking the burden that the Prophet (s) is carrying from the ummah!

(O Muhammad!) Have We not expanded your chest for you and relieved you of your burden that weighed down your back? Have We not raised your remembrance? (Surat ash-Sharh, 94:1-4)

“We have expanded your happiness. I want you to be happy! I am forgiving them for you, not for anyone else. I am granting you to make shafa`ah on their behalf in front of Me and I send them to Paradise because of you!”

If Prophet (s) said, “Among prophets I am the one who has seen the most difficulties in his life,” what do you think about normal human beings? It is not like the Prophet (s), who was tortured and abused by his own tribe, his own uncles, by the ones who raised him! So what are we expecting? We have to be careful. We have to be careful with what we have to do. Allah (swt) is happy to see us struggling and happy to see us repenting. If you fall into a mistake, repent immediately; don't forget about it, that you did a mistake because the Prophet (s) mentioned in some ahadith and it is not easy to mention. If you want to speak about maghfirah, inshaa-Allah every human being will be under the forgiveness of Allah (swt) by the shafa`ah of the Prophet (s)! Look, at that extent Allah (swt) will judge, and that is why the Prophet (s) said:

Innee araa maa laa tarawna wa asma`u maa laa tasma`oon, attat as-samaau wa huqqa lahaa an tu’itta maa feehaa mawdi`u arba`i asaabi`a illa wa malakun waadi`un jabhatahu saajidan lillah. W’Allahi law ta`lamoona maa `aalamu la-dahaktum qaleelan wa la-bakaytum katheera wa maa taladhadhtum bi’n-nisaa’ `alaa’l-furushi wa la-kharajtum ilaa’s-su`udaat tajaaroona ila’Allahi la-wadidtu annee kuntu shajaratan ta`dad.

I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The heaven makes a noise like groaning, and it has the right to (or it is no surprise), for there is no space in it the width of four fingers, but there is an angel there, placing his forehead in sujood (prostration) to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, you would not enjoy yourselves with your wives in bed and By Allah! I wish that Allah would have created me as a tree whose fruit is eaten."

(Reported by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and al-Hakim)

“If you hear what I hear and if you really see what I can see,”--which means no one can see better than the Prophet (s), and the Prophet (s) is telling the Sahaabah (r) who are noble ones, and we hope to follow their footsteps but we cannot reach them--and the Prophet (s) said, “If you heard what I hear and saw what I see, you would have smiled little and cried a lot.”

And the Prophet (s) said in an authentic hadith:

Qaala rasoolulllahi (s): man sharib al-khamr lam yaqbalillaahu lahu salaatan arba`eena sabaahan. Fa in taaba taab Allahu `alayhi...

Whoever drinks wine one time, Allah will reject his prayers for forty days even if he repents....

(Tirmidhi)

If someone will drink one sip of liquor, Fajr will be thrown in his face for forty days! He will not see Allah's mercy for forty days if he has one sip! If he repents and asks forgiveness, Allah forgives and if he does it again and then repents again, Allah forgives him and if he does it a third time, Allah will forgive him and if he does it a fourth time, no, that is not forgiven.

Man taraka ‘s-salaata sukran marratan waahidatan fa-ka-annamaa kaanat lahu’d-dunyaa wa maa `alayhaa fa-sulibahaa. wa man taraka ‘s-salaata sukaran arba`a marraatin kaana haqqan `alaa’Llahi an yasqeeyahu min teenati’l-khubaal. qeela: wa maa teenati ’l-khubaal? Qaal: `usaaratu ahli jahannam.

Sayyiduna `AbdAllah ibn `Umar narrates that the Prophet (s) said:

Whoever drinks wine, Allah Ta’ala will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah Ta’ala shall forgive him. If he drinks again, Allah Ta’ala will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah Ta’ala shall forgive him. If he drinks again Allah Ta’ala will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah Ta’ala shall forgive him. If he drinks again for the fourth time, Allah Ta’ala shall not forgive him and will make him drink from the river of Khabaal. They asked, “What is Khabaal?” The Prophet (s) said, “the juice of the people of Hell.”

(Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah and ad-Darimi)

O Muslims! There are many Muslims who pray and I know them, but when they attend social events they drink (alcohol). If you ask them, “Why are you drinking?” they say, “We cannot show ourselves as different from them.” No, you are different! They believe something and you believe something else. Maybe you dress like them, but Allah said, “Don’t drink,” and you drink. So we have to be very careful with the laws and principles of Islam.

Man kaanat `indahu mazhlamatin li-akheehi fee maalin aw `irdin fal-yaateehi falyatahllahu minhaa min qabli an yukhadha minhu wa laysa thumma deenaarun wa laa dirhamun fa-in kaanat lahu hasanaatun ukhidha min hasanaati saahibihi wa illah ukhidha min sayyeeaati saahibihi fa-turiha `alayh.

From Abu Hurayrah (r) that the Prophet (s) said:

Whoever took something from someone you have to go to him quickly and ask him forgiveness. If you don't do that and you ate his rights of inheritance, and too much of this happens today, brothers and sisters eat each other or foreigners, and the Prophet (s) said, anyone that faces such a problem and takes money from the Muslims or anyone else, he has go back quickly before he dies and say, “Make it halaal for me." If he didn’t pay it back and if he didn't have money, Allah will take from his hasanaat, good deeds, and if he does not have any good deeds left, Allah will take the sayiaat, bad deeds of the injured person and give them to the one who took the money!

O Muslims! Allah loves justice; if there is no justice, Allah is “al-`Adil,” The Just! If you don't keep justice in your life and cheat on this and that one, and speak behind the backs of your brothers, in many aayaat of Holy Qur'an, Allah prohibited it and the Prophet (s) also prohibited it.

Man ukhidha bi-shibran min al-ardi zhulman fa-innahu yatooqahu yawm al-qiyamat min saba`a ardeen.

And the Prophet (s) said, “Who took one handspan from the land falsely, verily he will be sent down seven earths on Judgment Day.”

In our countries they don't have stakes (to mark the border of land). They have rocks in Pakistan and Bangladesh where, in rural areas they are neighbors, but they put stone borders on the ground to show, “This is my piece and this is your piece (of land),” and if someone moves one hand more than his border, then Allah will open the Earth and he will go down through the seven levels of the Earth, or “saba` araadeen” might mean another thing, like there are seven planets, but it also might mean what happened to someone in Florida (who was recently swallowed by a sinkhole while he slept in his bed)! That is only if someone takes one hand extra beyond his limit.

O Muslims! Allah's mercy is too huge with no limits, but this (punishment) is only to bring us back to the track as the train sometimes goes off the track; sometimes we deviate right or left off the main track, then Allah’s Mercy will bring us back, so don’t always deviate from the track of Allah (swt).

It is said in a hadith that the best of people are the anbiyaa, prophets, as mentioned by Ibn Qayyim wans in his book al-Jawaab al-Kafee:

كما أن خير التاس الأنبياء ، فشر الناس من تشبه بهم يوهم أنه منهم وليس منهم،

Kamaa an khayra ’n-naasi al-anbiyaa, fa sharru ’n-naasi man tashabba bihim yoohim annahu minhum wa laysa minhum.

The best people are the anbiyaa, and the worst people are those who appear like them and delude others that they are from them but they are not from them.’”

As when the Prophet (s) asked the Sahaabah (r), “Who has the strongest of faith?” and they said, “The angels”, and then they say “the prophets....” until the end of the hadith.

The best of the people are the prophets and the worst of them are those who imitate the prophets and make himself to be like prophets in his character, but he is the lowest of character because he is full of arrogance.”

The Prophet (s) is trying to take arrogance from us.

Innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq.

I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character). (Bazzaar)

So there are people who are rude and who spread rumours. (The hadith continues.) “There are people who spread fitna, these are the worst of people; you think they are something and you believe them, but they take you in a wrong direction.

The best of people after prophets are `ulama, and the martyrs, and the trustworthy ones, and those who are loyal, and the worst of people are those who imitate these good ones, try to dress like them and speak like them, but they are the worst of people and they deviate the people in the wrong direction.”

May Allah (swt) keep us in the right direction under the banner of the Prophet (s), the banner of Islam, on the Day of Judgment when everyone, the prophets and all of their nations, will be running after the shafa`ah of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). May Allah include us under his shafa`ah!
