The Shepherd Will Be Asked

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

9 March 2013 Washington DC Metro Area

Zhuhr Suhbah at Private Residence (3)

In front of the judge the shepherd is going to be asked, not the sheep. That is why Allah (swt) made all prophets to raise sheep, although their knowledge is above that, but to give them a taste of how they have to treat them and to give them patience, because a shepherd has to have patience. You will never find that a shepherd gets angry at the sheep and kills the sheep, he will try to call them. So what does he get to call them? He sends dogs, or else how can he control 1,000 or 2,000 sheep? How can he do that? Dogs bring them together. So a shepherd is in a high position, but he needs helpers and these are the dogs who bring back the sheep who are running away.

Allah (swt) makes prophets raise sheep in order to give them a taste of submission, although they are submitting, but more submission, and to teach them that they are going to be responsible. Allah (swt) made Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) to be responsible for a huge flock of sheep. Among the anbiyaa, he was the one that had the most, the biggest flock of sheep. He gave it for free, he didn’t even want the responsibility.

Wa idh qaala rabbuka li ’l-malaaikati innee ja`ilun fi ’l-ardi khaleefatan qaaloo ataj`alu feehaa man yufsidu feehaa wa yasfiku ’d-dimaa wa nahnu nusabbihu bi-hamdika wa nuqaddisu laka qaala innee a`lamu ma la ta`lamoon

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not." (Surat al-Baqara, 2:30)

When Allah (swt) said, “I am going to make a khalifah on Earth for human beings,” the angels complained, it is written for them, there is one complaint there when they said, “Why do You want to bring human beings, is it not enough we are praising You?” Allah answered, “I know what you don’t know.” Look how nicely Allah answered them, although they are angels and He loves them and they are infallible, they have no sins, even though they complained, but this is to teach us as they have no sins.

So Jibreel (a) wanted to know why Allah (swt) is making a khalifah on Earth as he knew there was going to be corruption. And Allah (swt) sent him to Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) to show him how much His prophets are sincere to Him. He came to him by Allah’s Order and Allah told Jibreel to test Ibrahim.

Jibreel came and said, “O Brother,” he didn’t say, “O Ibrahim” as he was veiling himself completely for Ibrahim not to know him. He said, “O Brother, you have a big flock, what are you doing with it? I am hungry, my family and I have nothing and you have everything.”

Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said, “O, wait. Do you want one-third of that? I will give you one-third for free.”

He said, “How can I get it for free?”

Sayyidina Ibrahim (a )said, “I don’t want any wealth, but I want you to repeat an ayah behind me: suboohun quddusun rabbul malaaikatah wa ‘r-rooh. If you repeat that you will get one-third of the flock.

suboohun quddus rabbul malaaikahtah wa ‘r-rooh, if he says it once in his lifetime, he erased all his sins. If he says it once a month all his sins will be forgiven. This is hadith of Prophet (s)! And if he says it once a year, all the year’s sin will be forgiven. If he says it once in his lifetime, all his sins will be erased.

So he said, “Say ‘Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh” and take one-third.”

Sayyidina Jibreel said, “Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh.”

And by the power that Allah gave him, he was moving his hand like that, one third of the flock went to the other side to Jibreel (a). Jibreel could not believe that for one time saying subbuhun quddusun rabbul malaaikatah wa ‘r-rooh Ibrahim gave everything. And he was a human being but Allah mentioned him as Khalifah. Ibrahim (a) was a Khalifah on Earth.

Qaloo ataj`alu feeha man yufsidu feeha wa yasfiku’d-dimaa’ wa nahnoo nusabbihu bi-hamdika wa nuqaddisu-lak.

Behold! Your Lord said to the angels, “I will create a vicegerent on Earth.” They said, “Will you place there someone who will create mischief and shed blood while we celebrate Your praises and glorify Your (Holy Name)?” (Surat al-Baqara: 2:30)

They thought, “You are going to create people who will create fasad, corruption,” as we see today by them killing each other, they are corrupted, they don't respect each other. “How are You going to make a Khalifah on Earth?” they complained, “And we are praising You,” it’s enough.

It means, “O My angels, all your praises, if I want I can make, habba’an mansoorah, as if it did not exist! I am the One that if all angels, all Creation, all human beings, all things in movement in this universe or in Heavens is praising Me, it is not enough.”

But Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said to Jibreel, “Say it one time and I will give you one-third of my flock.” Sayyidina Jibreel (a) said, “Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh,” and Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) moved everything to the other side with his hand

They say Mahdi (a) is coming. Is he coming with weapons, with tanks or with airplanes? He will move with his hands and everything will be finished! It is `asr ul-mujizaat, “the century of miracles.” You will fight the unbeliever, even a sword will not be needed; he will fight an unbeliever with “Allahu Akbar.” When every mu’min moves his hand, lightning will come out of his hands that will take kufr away!

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said something from the secrets of tasawwuf, “Do you think when Mahdi (a) comes, he will be thirsty to kill human beings? When he fights the unbelievers, because they are fighting him, as soon as he moves his hands with those who come with him, that lightning will turn the unbeliever into a believer!” That is a fact: it will make the unbeliever to be a believer by that light; as soon as it reaches them they are turned to believers. Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah!

.

This is how they fight and not that they are paving the road, like in some countries they say, “We are paving the road for Mahdi (a).” Does Allah want you to pave the road? Can He not pave the road for Mahdi (a)? Did He need your help to pave the road for Prophet (s)? No! Mahdi (a) will come, `asr al-khawariq, in the century of miraculous powers. But more than miracles, khawariq is anything you see in front of you that becomes a mirage; everything will change. If you think this is a wall, in the time of Mahdi (a) it might not be a wall but something else; it might be a wall of pearls. In the time of Mahdi (a) everything changes.

So, Allah is saying, “I am going to make a khalifah.”

The angels said, “Why are You making a khalifah? Isn’t it going to bring corruption and they will kill each other?”

Allah (swt) said, innee a`lamoo ma laa ta`lamoon, “I know more than what you know.” It means, “I know, I am not doing all this for you to praise Me as I made you praise My Beloved One, Sayyidina Muhammad (s). I said, inna-Llaaha wa malaa'ikatahu yusalloona `ala 'n-nabiyy, ‘You angels are going to make salawaat, praise the Prophet, Sayyidina Muhammad (s).’ That is why I know what you do not know and for this one, I am giving all this!”

So Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said to Jibreel, “Say, ‘Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh,’ and I will give you one-third of the flock.” So he moved it with his hand to one side.

Sayyidina Jibreel (a) looked at him and said, “You have more than me now, you have two-thirds and I have one-third, and your wife doesn’t even have children. I have children and a wife.” The angel was testing him, although angels don’t have a wife or children.

So Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said, “Okay, I will give you more, say, ‘Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh,’ and take one-third more.”

He said, “SSuboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh,” and with his hand, Sayyidina Ibrahim moved the other one-third to Sayyidina Jibreel.

Sayyidina Jibreel looked, and Allah ordered all angels to look, “This is My khalifah, look!” They were looking with surprise that he gave two-third of his flock and even Jibreel’s tongue was frozen, he could not speak.

Sayyidina Ibrahim looked at him and said, “Yaa Jibreel!”

Sayyidina Jibreel (a) thought, “How does he know my name when I did identifying myself to him?”

Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said, “If you want more, I am going to give you more, just say,‘Suboohun quddus rabbu ‘l-malaa’ikatah wa ‘r-rooh, our Lord and your Lord,’ and I will give you the rest, and immediately he gave the rest to Sayyidina Jibreel (a), then he departed on his way.

Sayyidina Jibreel (a) shouted, “What am I going to do with them?”

Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said, “I don't care, it’s your business, do what you want. I am not going to look back, finished! What is past is past, I am looking forward to my way and this is the way. I gave you my wealth so take it; I am going to leave it behind one day. No, it is better to save the hands so take it, I am moving, I am not looking right and not looking left.”

Today people refer to “the Abrahamic religion,” or “Abrahamic faiths,” as they want to find words, to stuff any words to make a meaning. It’s a waste of time. If everyone would say, “Abrahamic faith,” and believe in Sayyidina Ibrahim (a), then they are not going to fight or need to make interfaith dialogue! If they really believe what Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) believed, then there would be no problem. What did Sayyidina Ibrahim believe in? He said, “I am going forward. I am not going to look back.” Interfaith must not look back. Everyone brings from his religion and is debating all others, but for what? Move forward, look forward! If they look forward, it means they need to be united.

Now you go to conferences and speakers speak one word in a very nice way, and all of them talk about it and as soon as they go out, and not necessarily out of the room, but as soon as speaker steps down from the podium, those near eachother begin to argue. Why are you arguing? Just now you read the ayah:

Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Ya ayyuha ’n-naasu inna khalaqnaakum min dhakkarin wa unthaa wa ja`alanaakum shu`uban wa qabaa’ila li-ta`arafoo, Inna akramakum `ind-Allahi atqaakum. inna Allaha `aleemun khabeer.

O Human Beings! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you, and Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:13)

O Human Beings! Allah (swt) didn’t say, “O Muslims,” He said, “O Human beings, yaa ayyuha ‘n-naas!” He didn’t say, “Yaa ayyuha ‘l-muslimoon, O Muslims,” or, “Yaa ayyuha ‘n-nasara, O Christians,” or, “Yaa ayyuha ‘l-yahood, O Jews.” He (swt) said, “Yaa ayyuhan ‘n-naas, O human beings. From where you came? Inna khalaqnaakum, “We created you from Our Creation, from male and female, min dhakkarin wa unthaa and made you nations and tribes to know each other, to unite with each other. The best amongst you is the one most sincere.”

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

The other ayah is, “Hold tight to the rope of Allah and do not separate,” Wa laa tafaraqoo, “Don’t create discord, don’t make divisions.” It is not to separate in the sense of everyone going to his place, that is okay, but don’t create divisions in the community between human beings. So if they believe in Sayyidina Ibrahim, they would not make divisions. Is he not the head of all faiths? Then why as a Muslim do I have to believe in Christianity and Judaism, and the Jewish community does not believe in my belief? And why do I have to believe in what Sayyidina `Isa (a) came with when they are not believing (in Islam)? But we are ordered to believe, so we believe, period! We don't say, “This is from Sayyidina Musa, he is gone, finished. This is from Sayyidina `Isa, he is gone, finished. We end it with Islam, but we respect Sayyidina Musa and we respect Sayyidina `Isa because Allah ordered us, “If you want to be a real Muslim, you have to accept what Sayyidina Musa came with and what Sayyidina `Isa came with.”

So it’s better to be what? Not shepherds, but sheep! Then you will have no responsibility, you will live happily, but responsibility makes you to have a lot of distances.

I go to very remote areas in Indonesia, at the top of mountains. You see people sitting there and I don't know how Islam came to them. It’s the top of the mountain, an old man and an old woman sitting there and they might be over 100 years old, planting rice on a piece of land. On top of mountain, can they plant rice, because it needs a lot of water, and what do they eat, because we passed many villages? We see it, they have banana leaves and they put the rice inside, close it, and bake it. This is their daily food, 24 hours, 365 days a year, all their lives, with no responsibility! Which is better?

I went to one village in Wonobodro, Batang where they recite Dalaa’il al-Khayraat continuously and we looked from far away, we were still driving from very far, and we saw people are sitting on the fields and they did not mention that the beginning of the village was still far. And everyone was sitting on the fields all the way to the masjid. There were like 40,000 to 50,000 people, and every day from `Asr to Maghrib, the whole city closes and they go to the masjid and recite Dalaa’il al-Khayraat for two hours, in one voice, in one sound....in one voice, you cannot detect one higher or one lower they were all at the same level, reading Dalaa’il al-Khayraat. For how many years? They told me since 400 years they had never stopped, not in summer or winter, although there is no winter but there is the rainy season.

I asked, “What about the rainy season?”

They said, “They are sitting and reciting under the rain.”

Until today they are still reciting, they never stop, that is their life. They don't say “civilized life,” they are living the civilized life and we are living the corrupted life!

Some people refer to “modernity.” I give a lecture about modernity in London, in one of the universities that belongs to HRH Prince Charles. I said about modernity that in every century it is the modernity for the people living in that time and I explained even in the Stone Age it was a modernity for them! Someone hammered the stone it was a modernity! I had written a lecture but said, “I am not going to read this,” so I kept the lecture on the side and I spoke on modernity. Two months later, they contacted us and said, “We need the video of that lecture,” because we had taped it, so we sent it to them from America and one month later Prince Charles invited me; he wanted to hear what I said about modernity and he liked it. When we met with him, he told me, “I like what you said.”

What did I say? I said, “For everyone in his time, it is modernity.” So don’t say, “We are in modernity;” maybe it is modernity of this time, but after us there might be another modernity. There might be more inventions that will make all these computer looks awkward now. Who said you are going to have an iPhone? You send messages from it day and night. How could you have believed that an iPhone can carry thousands and thousands of pages, and not only that, but it speaks with you. This is modernity for this century and after, it is going to change to the Mahdi century! Allahu Akbar! As I said, if you want to move, with Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem, and you will move in space.

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said about why awliyaullah appear in different places is because they use the power of Tayy. We have six realities and one is the reality of Tayy, folding space that allows you to move very far in a short time and the distance becomes small.

Allah (swt) said:

Yawma natwee as-samaa ka-tayyi 's-sijlli li 'l-kutubi kamaa badaanaa awwala khalqin nu`eeduhu wa`dan `alaynaa inna kunna fa`ileen.

That day We shall fold up Heaven like folding up the pages of a book. Even as We produced the first Creation, so shall We produce a new one, a promise We have undertaken (and) truly shall We fulfill it. (Surat al-Anbiya, 21:104)

It is like you are folding a book; the distance will be folded like a book so it becomes a small distance. Awliyaullah use this power. Grandshaykh (q) said they take the soul out of the body and put the body in the soul and they can move with their soul and with it they can move in a fraction of second. When they arrive, they take their soul and they put their souls in their body and they appear. Before they move, they begin with “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem,” and you don't see when the soul moves. It has six powers. Haqiqat at-Tawassul, Haqiqat al-Fayd, Haqiqat al-Jazbah, Haqiqat at-Tawajjuh, Haqiqat al-Irshaad, Haqiqat at-Tayy. It is in your heart, Allah gave these six realities and if you are on Siraatu ‘l-Mustaqeem, you can get it any time in your life even without a shaykh, because it is still within you, but the shaykh comes to give you the code. It’s there, but you need a code to open it and not everyone can take the code easily because we are immersed in dunya.

So, what is the best? To be sheep, not to do anything. We are using it’s skin to pray on it or we are wearing his skin. It doesn’t even say no! The sheep is happy, giving warmth to human beings, even after he dies. Allah made it halaal, finished. So to be sheep means to follow the shepherd. In the farm we have 200-250 sheep, but now we sold them. They follow the shepherd wherever he goes. Might be two, three run away, these are the wild ones. To bring them, because they are far away, who do you send? A dog. Who do you send? (George). (Laughter) There was a dog on the farm and I told them to send it away. He would collect the ones who were running away, but the rest follow the shephard. Most of us run away and we don't follow the shepherd. We are running away, becoming wild. So what do we need? We need someone to bring them back. So Allah gave awliyaullah, some people characteristics of representing Him, in order to bring those who are running back to normal. That is ni`mah from Allah (swt).

That is why I mentioned yesterday in Jumu`ah:

أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم

As-haabee ka 'n-nujoom bi ayyihim aqtadaytum ahtadaytum.

My Companions are like stars (on a dark night); whichever of them you follow, you will be guided.

(`Abd ibn Humayd, ad-Daraqutnee, ibn `Adiyy, ibn `Abd al-Barr,

with unsound chains but the meaning is sound.)

So what we need is to follow. If we don’t follow, then it is our responsibility. If we follow, then alhamdulillah it will be easy.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
