Importance of the Month of Safar & the Coming of Rabi` al-Awwal

Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani

There were a lot of difficulties in the month of Safar, so they called it Safaru 'l-Khayr, where khayr means 'the good,' meaning they wish that this Safar will pass on in a good way.

Now all months of the year have a certain manifestation. For example Tuesday is not a good day for travel and especially in Safar, because there is too much darkness coming down on earth. That is why they say it is not necessary to travel in that month, especially the last Wednesday. [That is] because the whole month, whatever is destined of difficulty, accumulates until the last Wednesday, and this is what is the most scholarly opinion,

[Questioner: So Rabi`u 'l-Awwal is a happier month?]

Yes, because they say that Islam was born when the Prophet (s) was born, not that Islam came when the message came. The reality of Islam came with the birth of the Prophet (s) and it comes as rahma, mercy. It means that the month that was before it was full of darkness, so when the light comes it takes that darkness away. So from there since Rabi`u 'l-Awwal comes after Safar, they say that Safar is the month that accumulates darkness and bad energy. Thus Rabi`u 'l-Awwal came as the first spring, the first month that came out after that darkness. That is why it is not recommended to travel too much during the month [of Safar]….

Khayr, goodness tries to put down sharr, evilness, and bring up the best. So Rabi`u 'l-Awwal, the month of the birth of Islam, came after the month of Safar, meaning that darkness has gone and brightness has come. Like in Surat al-Isra, where Allah (swt) said:

سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِۦ لَيْلًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ إِلَى ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْأَقْصَا

Subhan alladhee asraa bi `abdihi laylan min al-masjid al-Haraaam ila 'l-masjidi 'l-aqsaa.

Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muḥammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque. (Surat an-Najm, 17:1)

Allah (swt) moved His servant from Masjid al-Haraam to al-Quds at night. and in the tafsir of Holy Quran "He moved His servant in the darkness of the night to the light of heavens." So [this indicates] that light always comes after it is dark.

So that is why there is always a question mark about this year, that this month accumulates all the bad energy of the year in it and when Rabi`u 'l-Awwal, the spring of Islam comes with the birth of the Prophet (s), it overcomes that negative energy with the light of the birth of the Prophet (s).
