Become a Green Person

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

29 August 2015 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

The world is open to a new understanding and a new way of life since a long time, but today they are more concerned about it, ‘green conservation’ that we like everything to be green, and this is an Islamic concept from the time of Prophet (s) when he passed by two graves and stopped his Sahaabah (r). He (s) was passing by a village and asked for two branches with green leaves and he put one on one grave and the second on the second grave.

The Sahaabah (r) asked, “Yaa Rasoolullah (s), why is that?”

He said, “One of them wherever he went carried a lot of bad rumors and spread them everywhere.”

That person was punished in his grave, but he was a Muslim. So Prophet (s) took a branch with green leaves and put it over his grave and that way the person was stopped from punishment because there is something green coming on the grave, which means ‘clean’, youth, no sin. By this Prophet (s) interceded for him in order that he won't be punished.

Today are we walking with nameema (slander)? Look at ourselves, all of us throughout our lives day and night, what is our association after we pray `Isha in a mosque? Let’s say a person who is pious, after he prays `Isha what will he do with his wife? Talk, talk about everyone on Earth! Grandshaykh `AbdAllah, may Allah bless his soul, said, “If Allah gave people their whole life like Sayyidina Nuh, who lived for 950 years as a worshipper, still the people around him only spread false rumors.” Any time you speak other than prayers, you are speaking bad rumors, because you speak about others.

O you who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible), for suspicion in some cases is a sin, and spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would abhor it. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:12)

In Holy Qur’an, Allah (swt) said, “Don't speak about each other on their back (backbite).” Take from here, who is the first one, this one here (Mawlana smiles) and go through the line, is he not spreading false rumors or speaking about others? (No Sayyidi). You speak, he speaks, everyone speaks, I speak, we don’t make salawaat on Prophet (s), we don’t make istighfaar, but we are busy in talking about each other!

The second one who is being punished in the grave because he doesn't wash himself after he passes urine. Today they make for you a urinal in order for you not to wash, is it not? Wherever you go, in hotels, airplanes, airports, people go in the bathroom, urinate, close their pants and go! We have to be careful [from this terrible sin]! We are discussing this because laa haya fi ‘d-deen, there is no shyness in [matters of] religion.

استنزهوا من البول ، فإن عامة عذاب القبر منه

Clean yourselves from urine; most of the punishment of the grave is from it. (Ibn Majah)

We have to pass clean water over our private area when we urinate. There are many Muslims that don't think they are making a mistake when they don’t use clean water, but the Prophet (s) mentioned that the person in the second grave was punished because he was not cleaning himself after passing urine. You have to teach young children to sit on the toilet and wash themselves, because if they don’t learn this from childhood, when they are adults they won’t care!

Mawlana was wondering when he passed by a field that was not watered, what will happen with the crops, what color does it become before it goes to the ground? (Yellow). It means it is dry. So if it is dry, and he is asking and I am asking you to give me an answer, if we water the grass that is becoming yellow, will it become green? [Yes, sir]. You are a doctor, so you understand that by a miraculous way it can become green, but normally if you water something that becomes dry and yellow even with hundred gallons of water, it will not become green as it is already dying. So this is what we are. So you cannot make a yellow bush green! You were supposed to water it when it was young and green.

So Grandshaykh (q) was passing by a garden and said, “Whatever you are going to give it of water you will not make it turn green. The only thing that will make it green, which means ‘pure’, is dhikrullah.” Those circles of dhikrullah we sit in are a garden never gets yellow, it is always green! this example means to transfer yourself to become a green person. Sayyidina Khidr (a) is the ‘Green Man’, because wherever he passed in dunya becomes green and that is why he is called by awliyaullah, “Khidr” (a).

Grandshaykh (q) said, “Even if evil, sharr--which is not green, it is dry, yellowish, dead--has spread all over dunya, there is no way but to cut it completely.” That's why Mahdi (a) is coming: to cut from its roots. They tell you pull the weeds from their roots, don’t simply cut them or they will come back. Similarly, we have to take out all our bad characteristics from their roots Prophet (s) mentioned them and one is walking with bad rumors and the other is walking without cleaning yourself. It means, “O human beings! Clean yourselves if you want to reach Allah (swt) and His Prophet, Sayyidina Muhammad (s)!

Grandshaykh (q) said, “If now everywhere in dunya there is yellow grass, you cannot just cut it with a sickle, you need a huge machine, a (farming) sweeper that cleans completely from the roots to take all these bad characteristics. That's what we need today to take all these evil powers existing now in dunya; to get rid of them you have to use a huge machine, not a normal machine, a sickle, as it won’t finish anything.

One time someone came to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah bless his soul, and said, “Yaa Shaykh, your reputation is filling the Earth. Why don't you make everywhere green?”

Mawlana said, “It is like we are in the desert and everything is sand and in the middle of that desert is a small oasis and around it everything is green. Today, `ulama, or depending on their level, shuyookh, are like that small oasis with a little water that is not enough to turn everything around it green.”

Today the whole Ummah is like a dry desert: everything they speak is dry, nothing in their speeches pure, tasty water, so it is impossible to turn the desert into an oasis. The oasis is small. Today `ulama and mashaykh are like an oasis that can spread the good manners and behaviors, and take evilness away from around them, not throughout the whole dunya, but a wali to whom Allah gave power is like big machine: when he begins to plow the ground and turn the soil, it takes everything from underneath it because that soil is more fertile than the topsoil. It turns up the one hidden up and the one top one down to make the earth pure. So everything has to be in a seclusion, in order for them to turn up what is hidden, the good soil, and for top soil to be hidden: to bring up what is good, to benefit human beings in order to plant their crops. Allah (swt) gave us our organs and our body to keep it clean, and what keeps it clean is dhikrullah. There is nothing else, you can try whatever you want, there is no other way but dhikrullah. Dhikrullah will make the heart clean.

One person came to shaykh and said, “How can I become clean?”

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said, “By order of my teacher to show him how to become a clean person, so I said, ‘Do you see that apple tree? Take a stone and with all your power hit the tree and tell me what happens.’” So the man took a stone and hit the apple tree which, with the shock of being hit, gave twelve apples that fell down. So Grandshaykh (q) said, “Yaa waladi, O my son, when you become like that tree, whenever someone hits you with anything don’t hit him back; rather, reward him because by hitting on you Allah (swt) is granting you rewards when you are patient.”

When you are not patient, you take revenge into your own hands, which is not like when Allah takes revenge on your behalf, so leave the matter to Allah (swt). If someone speaks this or that about you, don’t listen, close your ears, or let it go from one ear and out the other! Today we need a big machine to clean this Earth from these evil powers. May Allah keep us with our shuyookh in dunya and Akhirah , and Prophet (s) and awliyaullah.
