Wisdom is to Know How to Act Based on Knowledge

Shaykh Nour Mohamad Kabbani

8 June 2025 Fenton, Michigan USA

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.

Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

May Allah (swt) accept our worship. We came to the cave, we stayed in the cave, now we’re exiting the cave. May Allah (swt) help you wherever you are going. You’re going to go back to your work, to your businesses, to your schools and the headaches of dunya. May Allah (swt) make it easy for all of us. Everybody has to pay a due. As we said yesterday, sabr and shukr. You will have to go through the phase of patience and then the phase of shukr will come through. May Allah (swt) make you do your best while you are saabir, a patient one and shaakir, a thankful one.

Dastoor, yaa Sayyidee, Qutbu ‘l-Mutasarrif. Madad, yaa Sultanu ‘l-Awliya.

Our way is easy. Our way is not strict. There is something called Hikmah, wisdom. Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an: Yu’ti ’l-Hikmata man yashaa. Allah (swt) will give wisdom.

Yu’ta ’l-hikmata man yashaa’u wa man yu’ta ‘l-hikmata faqad utiyya khayran katheera.

He granteth wisdom to whom He pleaseth; and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:269)

Wisdom is `ilm wa ‘l-`amal, to take knowledge and to act upon that knowledge. That is an art. It is not up to everybody, Allah (swt) gives it. Whoever has been given that art of knowledge and how to act upon it, that person has been given so much khayr, goodness. We have given Luqman Hikmah. Asta`eedhu billah:

Wa laqad `atayna ‘l-Luqmana ‘l-Hikmah…

We bestowed (in the past) Wisdom on Luqman: "Show (your) gratitude to Allah." Any who is (so) grateful does so to the profit of his own soul: but if any is ungrateful, verily Allah is free of all wants, Worthy of all praise. (Surah Luqman, 31:12)

Ani ’shkur lillah. Thank Allah (swt). Thank Allah (swt) for the wisdom that you have been given. They do this and that. We know. Mashaa-Allah. Yesterday somebody was teaching: “This can be done. This can’t be done.” He was quoting from this and that. We know what they know but they don’t know what we know!

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (q) and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) know what they’re doing. It is not adab to put them in a jaahil state. “Shaykh, maybe you don’t know but this is this and that is that.” May Allah (swt) forgive us. There is `ilm, knowledge, that everybody has access to but how to act upon that knowledge is an art and that is the Hikmah that Allah (swt) gives to whomever He wants. Whoever gets that Hikmah has been given great goodness.

إِنَّ الدِّينَ يُسْرٌ، فَسَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا

inna ‘d-deena yusr. Fassadidu wa qaariboo wa abshiroo.

Rasoolullah (s) said, “Indeed, the religion is ease. So aim rightly, draw near, and rejoice.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Rasoolullah (s) said “Our religion is easy.” If you come to make it strict, that Deen will defeat you. You won’t be able to do that. Try to do the right thing. Try to know the right thing but you will not be able to perfect it. Your `amal will not be perfect according to what is right, so come as close as you can to what is right. Wa abshiroo. Give the glad tidings of Allah (swt)’s rewards and Mercy.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

Wa ‘sta’eenu bi ‘s-sabri wa ‘s-salaah.

O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:153)

It means, seek support at this time, in the afternoon and something from the night in prayer.

Rasoolullah (s) opened the door of our way being easy, not strict. Mashaa-Allah, you like to clap. We are here in this part of the world. The hearts have come close to Islam but they are not yet secure on Islam and Iman. You have to use wisdom in allowing people who like Islam to continue on this way. If you make it strict for them, “You cannot do this or this or this,” they will run away! They will not want to stay next to you.

As I learned from Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (q), they allowed so many things. They were breakdancing in front of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q). He allowed certain people to exhibit their joy in their way. Everybody can show their joy and happiness with the Qasaa’id, anaasheed and Dhikr in their own way as long as it is not too much out of Shari`ah. In their own way they are expressing their joy. Sayyidina as-Siddiq (r) expressed his joy when Rasoolullah (s) said: Al-mar`u ma’a man ahabba.

He stood up and started showing his joy. Go back to the Hadith and see what he did. He moved side to side in joy. Sahaabah (r) moved side to side in joy. Depending on the state of the person, they can exhibit their emotions of joy and happiness in their way.

The murshid, Mawlana Shaykh Hisham, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim allowed that joy to be expressed so these people could remain within the circle of Awliyaullah. Mashaa-Allah. Everybody else looks at you like this and you never want to come to that Masjid again. If they say one word, you will never come to the city again. You cannot. You have to act according to the knowledge you have.

Rasoolullah (s), you will never make it perfect. Try to perfect the action of yours as much as you can and give the glad tidings. Alhamdulillah, you started something yesterday out of your joy and some other people also started something and it is acceptable, it’s permissible. In the Hanafi school of thought it is permissible to clap because you’re not doing it as worship. The mushriks used to clap and that was their worship. You are clapping out of joy and love of Rasoolullah (s) and the praises to him.

The Hanafi school allows clapping in cases of joy and appreciation. It is okay. It’s permissible. You have to allow that room, especially in the west. In the east you can do whatever you want. You can hit the person on the head. In Saudi, Dubai, Lebanon, do whatever you want. They are strong Muslim adherents. Here in the west, if you show them strictness, they will escape, especially those across the street from New York City. They just take a boat and go to New York, “I don’t want your Dhikr in Jersey CIty. I will go entertain myself. He is so strict. He is Qadiri from Pakistan. It is too much for me. I am an American. I am a westerner.”

You have to know what to do and when to do it. Since we don’t know, we look at our shuyookh. Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (q) allowed certain things to go on and so we continue with that. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) allowed breakdancing. Alhamdulillah, nobody knows how to breakdance. That was from the 80’s. I learned some moves when I was young but I cannot do it here. They will come against me even worse.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) allowed it and Chechen Dhikr is clapping. They go in circles out of joy. It is allowed. Awliyaullah have allowed sama`, when you recite a nasheed, when you praise Rasoolullah (s), when you say words of wisdom. O poor ones, the ones who have left dunya! Rejoice in sama`, in the singing, recitation and praising of Rasoolullah (s). Fuqaraa like us have nothing else to do anymore. We have cut ourselves off from all the pleasures of dunya and now you’re going to cut us off from nasheed. What are we going to do? We’re finished then.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. Rasoolullah (s) was the Door of Mercy of Allah (swt). He was the Door of the Treasuries. If you come to him, he will open the Treasuries for you. That is what “seal” means. You cannot open an envelope that has a seal on it. You cannot open the treasuries that have locks on them. Rasoolullah (s) is the seal of all the treasuries of Allah (swt). If there is anything you want, you come to him and he can unseal that door for you and you can enter and take whatever you want. Rasoolullah (s) has shown doors of mercy.

Awliyaullah have taken Hikmah on how to use that knowledge and what `amal to do. You have people who put others at the level of jaahil, “O shaykh, you’re an ignorant one. You don’t know what you’re doing.” We know what we are doing. May Allah (swt) forgive us.

Next time clap louder during joy. May Allah (swt) always make us from the happy ones. Allah (swt) said: Qul bi fadlillahi wa bi Rahmatihi fa bidhalika fal-yafrahu.

Say: "In the bounty of Allah. And in His Mercy, in that let them rejoice": that is better than the (wealth) they hoard. (Surah Yunus, 10:58)

What is farah? Extreme happiness. Extreme joy. Allah (swt) allowed it in two areas. One, you have to be happy and joyous for the victory of mu’mins. It is also mentioned in Surat ar-Rum.

Within a few years. With Allah is the Decision, in the past and in the Future: on that Day shall the Believers rejoice. (Surat ar-Rum, 30:4)

Allah (swt) said that happiness is not only allowed but you have to be happy. And, bi Fadlillahi wa bi Rahmatihi. That means by Rasoolullah (s). Rasoolullah’s (s) holy name is Fadlulllah. His holy name is Rahmatullah. Allah’s (swt) Rahmah and Allah’s (swt) Fadl are represented in the person and the reality of Rasoolullah (s). By him, in him you are allowed to rejoice and be happy.

He was showing his appreciation and joy yesterday. Rasoolullah (s) said it is very easy and this deen is very wide. It can take everything inside. You have to know where to go and where to stop. Only Awliyaullah and `Ulama-billah know. Mawlana allowed it and we are continuing with it. Alhamdulillah.

Rasoolullah (s) said in the Hadith that Allah (swt) has khawwaas, special servants. He will make them live in the highest places of Jannah. They were the smartest of people. They asked, “Yaa Rasoolullah. How can they be the smartest of people?” Rasoolullah (s) said, they used to race to Allah (swt) and they used to hasten to His Pleasure.”

Yesterday you were going 40 miles an hour. I was going 80 miles an hour. I was racing. I passed him and he pressed the brakes. He was afraid. Race to Allah (swt)! But beware of deer. The people who came to Fajr today were racing to Allah (swt). They were running quickly to Allah (swt)’s Pleasure. Allah (swt) will put them in the highest stations of Jannah because Jannah is right under `Arsh. The ceiling of Jannah is right at the floor of `Arsh. They are the closest to Allah (swt)’s Divine Presence. They will be up because they were racing to Allah (swt) and His Pleasure.

How did they do that? They turned away from the love of this world, from being leaders in dunya and they have left the extravagance and comfort of dunya. They left all of that and ran to Allah (swt). They were the smartest of people. Alhamdulillah, we have a bunch of people here. You are the smartest of people. Allah (swt) will put you in the highest levels of Jannah, so race to His Pleasure.

Awliyaullah have said that dancing for the sake of Allah (swt), for the pleasure of Allah (swt) is acceptable. Prayer that is not for Allah (swt) is not acceptable. Worship that is not for Allah (swt) is not acceptable but dance for Allah (swt) is acceptable because it is your niyyah, intention. Who are you doing this `amal for? If it’s for the pleasure of Allah (swt), you’re giving whatever you think is the best, it is acceptable.

I heard a story from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) about Musa (a). Musa (a) was going to Tur, Mt. Sinai, to speak to Allah (swt) and on the way he passed by a man who made horse saddles. He asked, “Yaa Musa. Where are you going?”

“I am going to Tur to speak to Allah (swt).”

“Oh, that Allah (swt). If I can meet Him, I will make the best saddle for His horse.”

Musa (a) said, “Shut up. What kind of words are these? Allah (swt) doesn’t have a horse to ride on. What kind of nonsense is this?” He got upset and went to Tur.

After he spoke to Allah (swt) and He revealed to Sayyideena Musa (a) what his people needed, Musa (s) was going back and Allah (swt) asked him, “Yaa Musa. Why did you get upset at that servant?”

“Yaa Rabbee. Is this something to be said? He said if he meets You, he will make the best saddle for Your horse. This is nonsense."

He said, “Yaa Musa. Don’t be upset. Yes, I don’t ride horses but I accepted his offer. From the bottom of his heart, from the love he has in his heart, he wanted to give Me the best he can. That’s what came to his mind that the best he can do is a beautiful saddle for My horse. I accepted his offer. I accepted his gesture. Yes, I don’t have a horse. I don’t need a saddle but I accepted what he offered. Don’t be upset.”

Look at the wisdom. Allah (swt) is Al-Hakeem. I read at Fajr from Surah Aali `Imran that Allah (swt) taught him, wa yu`allimuhu ’l-kitaba. He will teach him the Book, the laws, the regulations. Wa ‘l-Hikmah. And I will teach him the wisdom. Anbiyaullah have learned wisdom. Awliyaullah have learned wisdom. The wisdom is that when somebody is offering something that is unacceptable to your mind because Allah (swt) doesn’t have a horse, Allah (swt) said, “I accepted his offer. I accepted his gesture and I have rewarded him for his intention. His intention was pure love to Me and the way he could express his love was to make a saddle for My horse. That’s how he knows.”

Someone who is expressing their love to Rasoolullah (s), yes, he’s clapping because that's what he knows. That is acceptable as long as it’s for Allah (swt) and it’s out of sincerity, not the ones who clap and say, “Oh are people seeing how beautifully I make Dhikr?” Somebody starts to scream, “Ahh.” Everybody says, “Oh mashaa-Allah, he’s a Wali. Something happened to him. He’s going to fly soon.” Some people scream. Have you ever seen them? Sometimes it’s real and others do it for show. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, “”Next time you scream, I will give you falaqa. I will put you on your back and you will scream for real.”

Do you know what falaqa is? They don’t do it here, alhamdulillah. Back home 40 years ago when we were in school and you did something really bad, they would lay you on your back in front of everybody, raise your legs up and then hit your soles. Not too hard but hard enough that you don’t do anything anymore. Some of them couldn’t walk on their feet anymore because they were nasty, naughty students. Here they don’t do any of that. All the students can do whatever they want. They drive their teachers crazy. Over there you cannot drive the teacher crazy. The person was screaming every two or three minutes and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) couldn’t say his suhbah.

Sayyidina Musa (a) who had the book of laws said it was not acceptable but Allah (swt) told him, “Yaa Musa. Don’t mind. I accepted his gesture. He said it out of love. Yes, I don’t have a horse but I accepted it out of love.” That is the difference between kitab and Hikmah. You should not go out of kitab. As Rasoolullah (s) said, you should always find the right away and come as close as you can to the right away and give glad tidings. Alhamdulillah.

Inshaa-Allah, we can be in the highest levels of Jannah. You will go up to Jannah according to your love because you are going to hook up with the ones you love. The more love you have, the higher you are in Jannah. That’s what Awliyaullah have said. Everybody in Jannah has maqaamu ‘l-ma`loom. It is according to your Muhabbah. If you love eating and drinking and grazing, you will be in Jannah doing that. No problem, it’s there. If you love Saaliheen, Anbiya, Awliya and Rasoolullah (s), you will be higher and higher. If you have muhabbatu ‘Llah, muhabbatu ‘r-Rasool, muhabbatu ‘l-Awliya, you will be in the highest levels of Jannah. As you know, express your joy. It’s allowed. May Allah (swt) forgive us. Inshaa-Allah, your intention can be pure for Allah (swt)’s Pleasure and not for anything else. Ameen.

Yaa Rabbee, we have a lot of shortcomings. We have a lot of mistakes. Let us see Haqq as Haqq and follow Haqq truly, yaa Rabbee, and let us see falsehood as falsehood and shun it.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
