Who Humbles Himself Allah Will Raise Up

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

3 February 2012     Lefke, Cyprus

Jumu`ah Khutbah

Allah (swt) gave His Prophet (s) what He did not give anyone. He raised him higher and higher, dressed him and blessed him with the revelations of the Holy Qur`an and His Light. Prophet (s) said to his Companions, the Sahaabah (r):

????? ????????????? ???????? ??????????? ????? ??????? ??????????? ???? ???????? ????? ????? ???????????. ????? ????????????? ???????? ?????????

 ????? ?????? ???????? ???????????

'Alaa unabbi-ukum bi ahli 'l-jannah? Kullu da`eefin mutada`afin. Law aqsama `ala Allahi la-abarrahu. ‘Alaa unabi’akum bi ahli n-naar? kullu `utullin jawwaazhin mustakkbir.

Shall I inform you about the People of Paradise? (They will be) every weak and oppressed person. When he swears by Allah, he fulfills his oath. Shall I inform you about the People of Hellfire? (They will be) every violent and arrogant one." (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Prophet (s) said, “Would you like me to tell you about the People of Paradise?” They said, “Yaa Rasoolullah (s)! Who wouldn't want to know about the People of Paradise? ” He said, kullu da`eefin mutada`afin, “Anyone who humbles himself.” Whomever makes his ego go lower and lower for the love of Allah (s), His Prophet (s) and awliyaullah is a humble person because he listens, accepts, tolerates, and he shows humility and weakness to Allah (s).

Unfortunately, we haven't become like that yet. That is why our teacher, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani, may Allah give him a long life, was humble all his life and has taught us to be humble. That means everyone who humbled himself and tried to not run after his desires. Alhamdulillah, your presence here today is a proof that you are not one of those who are arrogant, but you are humble.

Then the Prophet (s) said, alaa unabbi’akum bi ahli n-naar, “Would you like me to tell you about the People of Hellfire?” and the Sahaabah (r) replied, “Yes, yaa Rasoolullah!” He said, kullu `utullin jawwaazhin mustakkbir, “(They will be) everyone ignorant and arrogant,” meaning, the one who does not like his brothers nor taking their advice, who is stubborn with his opinions and does not care for the rest. We see this arrogance a lot within us in our egos. May Allah (swt) protect us from arrogance.

The Prophet (s) said to his Sahaabah (r), “There are four words from the Holy Qur’an that whoever recites them will enter Paradise.” They said, “What are they, yaa Rasoolullah?” and he replied, “SubhaanAllah, wa ‘l-hamdulillah, wa laa ilaaha illa-Llaah, Allahu Akbar.” Every one of you is reciting these (after every salaah), “SubhaanAllah, alhamdulillah, wa laa ilaaha illa-Llaah, Allahu Akbar!” Say it! SubhaanAllah, alhamdulillah, wa laa ilaaha illa-Llaah, Allahu Akbar! These words are from the Holy Qur’an and you can read them in any order you like.

The Prophet (s) said:

???? ????? ?? ?? ???

Yuhshar al-maruw ma` man ahab.

Each person will be resurrected with the one he loves.

When a Bedouin came to the Prophet (s) asking about the Signs of the Last Day, he (s) said, “What have you prepared for that day, O `Arabi? It is a long journey.” The Bedouin said, hubbuka wa hubbullah, “I have your love! I love you and Allah.” Anyone who loves Prophet (s) for sure loves Allah (swt), and who loves Prophet (s) loves awliyaullah. That’s why Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an:

???? ????? ?????????? ?????? ??? ?????? ?????????? ????? ???? ???????????

Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon.

Behold! Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.

(Surat Yunus, 10:62)

O Muslims! We have gathered here today to respect each other and to ask for wisdom. When Sayyidina `Ali (r) was asked about wisdom he said, raasu ’l-hikmatu makhaafatullah, “The head of wisdom is to fear Allah.” Allah (swt) does not look at your wealth, if you are rich or poor.

The Prophet (s) said:

?? ???? ???? ?? ???? ??? ???? ?????

Rubba ash`ath aghbara law aqsama `ala Allaahi la-abbarah.

There may be a disheveled, dusty person who, if he swears an oath by Allah, Allah will fulfill it. (Muslim)

Today people do not even look at a person who has a dirty appearance, they only turn to the rich, not the poor; they respect the rich and disrespect the poor. However, Prophet (s) said, “There may be a dusty, greasy-haired man who, if he asks anything from Allah, Allah will give to him.” Nowadays people are running after the rich like rabbits, asking to get something, and we are forgetting to ask Allah (swt) and His Prophet, Sayyidina Muhammad (s), and the intercession of our shuyooks to take us to the presence of Prophet (s)!

O Believers! The Prophet (s) said to that Bedouin, “What have you prepared for the Last Day?” and he replied, “Yaa Rasoolullah! I don’t have anything but your love. I love you and Allah (swt)!”

Sayyidina `Ali (r) gave us a very great hikmah which we must all follow. He said, “Islam or Maqaam al-Ihsaan, the State of Perfection, depends on four qualities: first, as-samt, to keep silent. When you are in a gathering or in a meeting with people, keep quiet. Don’t talk, because as soon as you talk they will understand if you know something or not. He said, “Keep quiet” or zip your mouth; that will be the best thing for you. Don’t try to give an advice because it’s not the right moment yet. He said, “I’m teaching you what you need to do,” and these are his words. Then he said, “After you are silent, you are al-istima`, listening to what they are saying.”

One time, when me and my brother Shaykh Adnan were young, we took Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah give him long life and cure him, to Beirut to visit my uncle who was the head of `ulama in Lebanon. We went to his house where there were many `ulama from different schools of thought who had come to learn from our uncle. Due to our love for Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, we said to him, “Mawlana, this is a big gathering of 150 scholars. Why aren’t you speaking? Say something to them.” Out of love we wanted him to speak in order to show how much he knows.

He said, “No, I’m going to keep quiet. It’s like a Turkish bath here where everyone is singing and talking; it’s better to listen.” He didn’t say a word until they finished and he spoke with my uncle.

That is humbleness and it is teaching us how saints act with others by simply listening. So first, “be quiet,” and second, “listen to what they are saying,” and third, an-nazar, “observe” their faces and how they intereact with each other. When you are quiet and you listen to how they are acting with each other, you can read their faces. Learn how to read the face of a person. You can read their faces and understand like the people who play chess: it might take them 24 hours to move a single chess piece because they are looking at their opponents’ face to read his mind, to figure out what he might do next. They keep quiet for long hours and they don’t make a move until they’re certain what stone to move. So be quiet, listen, and observe! After observation, he said,  al-harakah, “move, act,” then you can make your move and will be successful.

O Muslims! The Prophet (s) said:

 ?? ???? ?????? ????? ??????? ??????? ??????? ????? ?????? ?????? ????? ?????? ????? ?????

Afshoo 's-salaam wa 'ati`mu 't-ta`am wa salloo bi 'l-layl wa 'n-naasu niyaam tadkhulu 'l-jannata bi 's-salaam.

Spread (or say) the salaam, give food, and pray at night while people are asleep, then you will enter Paradise peacefully. (Tirmidhi)

Say, “As-salaamu `alaykum” to each other! You cannot know who is a Muslim except through the signs that Prophet (s) gave us, which is to put something on your head: a hat, a tajj, turban, or an amaamah. In Europe, there are lots of Muslims but you don’t know if they are Muslim or not because they don’t look Muslim, as they don’t wear a hat or a head-covering.

The Prophet (s) said:

?? ???? ??? ????

man tawada`a lillah rafa`hu.

Whoever shows humbleness to his Lord, his Lord will raise him.

It means don’t be worried about your turban or hat, but show the signs of Islam even in countries where there are no such signs and become a pioneer of that.

“Say salaam to each other and give food.” When you eat invite someone, don’t eat by yourself. “Give food to people” means, look for those who are in need and give to them. Then he said, wa salloo bi 'l-layl wa 'n-naasu niyaam,“Wake up when people are asleep and pray to Allah; make sajda.” It is said, `alamatu ‘l-`ibaadu sajda, “The sign of worship is to make sajda,” and he (s) continued, tadkhulu 'l-jannata bi 's-salaam, “then you will enter Paradise peacefully.”

May Allah (swt) cure our teacher, our shaykh, Sultan ul-Awliya, Sayyidi Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani and give him support. Inshaa-Allah, we will see him very soon in the best condition, with the best of health. All of you say, “Ameen!”
