Jumu`ah Khutbah
A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.
Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.
O mu’mins, O believers, subhaanAllah, we were planning Jumu`ah in DC. Today they planned it over there. Our brothers and sisters in Islam planned a visit but it didn’t happen. Jumu`ah is here today. Allah (swt) knows the next step you will take, what you’re going to do, what is the next trip you’re going to go to, the next work you’re going to do . That’s all ghayb for us but it is known to Allah (swt). May He always allow us to do what pleases Him and pleases Rasoolullah (s).
I was just looking to see what they did over there and I noticed the flyer. I didn’t know about it but supposedly the Jumu`ah Khutbah is about the heart’s compass. I started thinking, “What is the compass of the heart?” For a Muslim, a mu’min, the heart needs a compass. What does the compass do? It shows you directions so you can travel to the right way and destination, otherwise you will lose your way and end up in a place that you don't want to be in.
What is the heart’s compass? What shows you the right way? For a mu’min it is the Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem, Kalamullah, the Words of Allah (swt). Elevate. Don’t be stuck down. Go to Kalamullah. That is the compass of the heart. If you don’t know Kalamullah, what kind of mu’min are you? If you have not understood Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem, what a deficient Muslim are you? It’s a pity that people are asking for guidance and Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem is ready. People are thirsty for knowledge and Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem is an ocean to give. People are asking for light and they are in the darkness and Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem is a shining sun. People are asking to smell good and Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem is all perfumery for you, O human being. It’s a pity that Muslims and mu’mins don’t know the Qur’an, nor do they know Kalamu ‘Llah.
Allah (swt) said, asta`eedhubillah. Yahdi ila ‘l-Haqqi wa illa Tariqi ‘l-Mustaqeem.
They said, "O our people! We have heard a Book revealed after Moses, confirming what came before it: it guides (men) to the Truth and to a Straight Path. (Surat al-Ahqaf, 46:30)
Do you know where Surat al-Ahqaf is? We know Surat al-Baqarah because it’s in the beginning and we know Surah Ikhlas because it’s at the end. How about the middle? Nobody knows. The ones who know are very few. In Surat al-Ahqaf, Allah (swt) says, He guides you to Truth. That means safety, so you don’t get lost in the sea. You find land. You find the shore. You find safety. Wa illa Tariqi ‘l-Mustaqeem. He will guide you to the Right Path. Who? Kitaban. The Kitab, Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem. Who is looking? Everybody says, “We are lost. We don’t know what to do.” Allah (swt) is telling you, “Read My Book. My Book will guide you to Tariqi ‘l-Mustaqeem, the Right Way, to the straight way, to the true way, to safety, to My pleasure, to My gardens.”
We get stuck down there with this, “We’re with this guy. We’re with that guy,” and then you are all lost. Don’t be like that. In another surah, Allah (swt) says, yahdi illa ‘r-rushdi.
'It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein: we shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord. (Surat al-Jinn, 72:2)
Surah Jinn. You only read Surah Jinn if there are jinn in your house. “I have jinn in my house. What do I read?” Surah Jinn. “Okay. I’ll read it for the jinn to go away.” What does the second verse of Surah Jinn tell you? In the first verse it says, inna sami`na Qur’anan `ajaba.
Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital! (Surat al-Jinn, 72:1)
We have heard an amazing, unimaginable kind of recitation. Qur’an means to recite. It’s from qara’ah, that which is recited by the holy mouth of Rasoolullah (s). `Ajaba, wondrous, amazing. We have never heard something like that. Yahdi illa ‘r-rushdi. He guides us to rushd. What does the Murshid do? He guides you to rushd. He guides you to the right way, the safe way, the garden of Paradise.
Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem is your murshid. O young one, why don’t you get involved in learning Arabic and understanding Kalamu ‘Llah, the Words of Allah (swt)? It is a pity for Muslims that we are all out there learning everything else except the Qur'an. It is sad but what can you do? That’s a fact. If I was not blessed with being an Arab by birth, maybe I would also not have read the Qur’an in Arabic and understood the Qur’an in Arabic. I would have picked up the transliteration or translation like the rest of us. Even in the translation you can find some guidance.
One Waliyullah was in the presence of a king. This king looked at him and asked, “How do you see my state?” Mashaa-Allah, so many people say, “We are great ones. We are big ones. We are pure ones. We are this and that.”
He asked, “How do you see me?”
“With kibr. Present it to the Book of Allah (swt). Let the Book of Allah (swt) be your compass to know what your state is.”
“Where do I find it?”
“You find it in the following verse. Asta`eedhu billah.”
Inna ‘l-abraara la fee na`eem.
Truly the Righteous will be in Bliss. (Surat al-Mutaffifin, 83:22)
wa inna ’l-fujaara la-fee jaheem.
Wa inna ‘l-fujara la-fee Jaheem.
And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire. (Surat al-Infitar, 83:14)
The good ones are in bliss and happiness and joy. If you look at them, they are happy. The good ones are comfortable. The good ones are restful. All these big shots who claim they are big shots, if they are restless, they are not abrar, they are not in na`eem. Abrar comes from birr, the best of actions and words. That means they do the best deeds, they do the best benefit for the Ummah and for humanity. Why are you not feeling na`eem? Na`eem means bliss and comfort in Jannah.
Allah (swt) says in dunya the good ones will feel that they are in na`eem and in Akhirah they will be in na`eem, in Jannah. In dunya they’re comfortable and happy and in Akhirah they're even more comfortable and happy.
He said, “The next one is your state. Wa innal fujara la fee jaheem.”
The wicked ones, the disobedient ones, the mean ones, the hypocrites, those who are like snakes are in Jaheem, Hellfire. Here they are in hellfire. If you look at them, they are burning on the inside and burning on the outside. Not actual physical burning, no, emotional burning, sadness and grief and anger has surrounded them internally and externally.
“O king, if you want to know your state, look into your own self. I don’t know what you are in. Are you happy and comfortable and at rest and at peace or are you the opposite? Then you know if you are from the good ones or if you are from the bad ones.”
The king says, “Where are our deeds? I have done things for people. I have performed tasks, given orders and have done this and that. Where is my `amal, my deeds?”
“In Kalamu ‘Llah. Look at your compass, your meezan.”
Allah (swt) says, I have brought down the Meezan that is Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem. Weigh it on the scale of the Qur'an.
He said, “Allah (swt) said, asta`eedhu billah. Innama yataqabu ‘Llahu mina ‘l-muttaqeen.
Recite to them the truth of the story of the two sons of Adam. Behold! they each presented a sacrifice (to Allah.: It was accepted from one, but not from the other. Said the latter: "Be sure I will slay you." "Surely," said the former, "(Allah) does accept of the sacrifice of those who are righteous. (Surat al-Ma’idah, 5:27)
Allah (swt) only accepts from the pious ones, from the righteous ones, from the ones who have avoided fame, reputation, hypocrisy, double facedness and all of that stuff. That is the `amal that Allah (swt) accepts.” It is the Qur'an.
I’m telling you the story that I’ve read and I’ve heard. I heard it from my master as well so I’m just sharing it with my brothers and sisters.
If you ask, “Where is my `amal?” Allah (swt) accepts from muttaqee, from the one who has taqwa. Be careful. Don’t be double faced. Don’t be double tongued, you say one thing here and another thing here. You mean one thing but you want to do another thing. Don’t be the opposite of muttaqee. Allah (swt) accepts from those who have taqwa.
This king had some kind of lineage to Rasoolullah (s), so he said, “Maybe I’m a wicked one who made mistakes.” All of us make mistakes. We say “astaghfirullah” and Allah (swt) forgives. “Maybe my `amal was mixed with my ego and my desires and my dunya. Maybe I also made shirk khafee, hidden shirk but I have a lineage with Rasoolullah (s).”
That Waliyullah said:
Fa idhaa nufikha fi ‘s-soori falaa ansaaba baynahum yawma’idhin wa laa yatasa’aloon.
Then when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no more relationships between them that Day, nor will one ask after another! (Surat al-Mu’minoon, 23:101)
On the Day of Judgment when the trumpet is blown, there is no kinship between them. The brother runs away from his brother. The son runs away from his father. The mother runs away from her children. Everybody runs away from everybody else. Your wife will run away from you. You will run away from your wife. All you say here is, “Darling, darling. Yes, sweetheart. What do you want, darling?”
On the Day of Judgment you will say, “Get away from me. I have something that I am consumed with. I have no time for you, whether you are my wife, my brother, my sister or my friend.” Nobody will ask about anybody else.
Kinship, lineage does not matter when the trumpet is blown. Do you want the heart compass? It’s there. It’s in the Holy Qur’an. Where is our kinship to Rasoolullah (s)? There is no lineage on that day.
He said, “We understand there is no kinship. How about the shafa`ah?” Rasoolullah’s (s) shafa`ah is Haqq. He will give shafa`ah but Allah (swt) said and this Waliyullah told this king, it’s in the compass of the hearts. In the Holy Qur’an, Allah (swt) is saying:
يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا تَنفَعُ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَرَضِىَ لَهُۥ قَوْلًا
Yawmaidhin laa tanfa`u ’sh-shafa`atu illa man adhina lahu ‘r-Rahmanu wa radi’a lahu qawla.
On that Day shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by (Allah) Most Gracious and whose word is acceptable to Him. (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:109)
On that day the shafa`ah will not benefit anyone except the one who Ar-Rahman, Allah (swt) permits to give shafa`ah and He is pleased with his words, He is pleased with his truthfulness, not crookedness.
Where are we? What more murshid do you need than the Holy Qur’an? Who is a better teacher than Allah (swt)? Who is a better guide than Allah (swt)? His name is Al-Hadi but you have fallen down into the slumps and you don’t know how to get out. The Holy Qur’an is the rope of Allah (swt) extended to you to bring you up but you don’t hold onto it. You only know Fatiha, Surat al-Baqarah is the next chapter, we know that, alhamdulillah, and the rest, no. “I know Ikhlas, Falaq, Naas.” That is also enough if you really understand what these chapters mean and you get the reality of those meanings, you are safe as well.
It is said that if you understand what Fatiha means, it is enough for you. All heavenly knowledge has come in Surat al-Fatiha because all Holy knowledge is knowing about Allah (swt), knowing Yaumu ‘l-Akhir, knowing Rasoolullah (s) and knowing the qada` and qadr. All Heavenly knowledge is to teach you about your Lord, to teach you about the Last Day, to teach you about the prophets and to teach you about the destiny and decree of Allah (swt), its good and its bad.
Understand that Allah (swt) has not left you unattended to as Rasoolullah (s), “If I leave, you have Qur’an and Sunnah to follow.” Why are you so concerned? Understand the Holy Qur’an. Read the Holy Qur’an. Go after the meanings of the Holy Qur’an. May Allah (swt) allow us to be from those who go after that.
In Surat az-Zumar, Allah (swt) says, Alaa lillahi ‘d-deenu ‘l-khaalis.
Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due? But those who take for protectors other than Allah (say): "We only serve them in order that they may bring us nearer to Allah." Truly Allah will judge between them in that wherein they differ. But Allah guides not such as are false and ungrateful. (Surat az-Zumar, 39:3)
If you want to reach Allah (swt)’s Divine Presence, it is through sincerity, ikhlas, not to have another one in your heart, not to have another gain in your heart, not to have another advantage in your heart. It’s purely to reach to Allah (swt). What is ikhlas, sincerity? How did Awliyaullah describe it? He said, when your `amal is free from shirk, riya` and sum’ah, partnership with other than Allah (swt) and the biggest one is your ego, free from reputation and free from being double facedness. You are showing off.
Awliyaullah said this is the external meaning but the true meaning, the reality of ikhlas, and I’ll say it in Arabic as I have heard it: tasfiyatu ‘l-`amal min mulahadhati ‘l-makhlooqeen, to filter your `amal from noticing makhlooq, creatures. When you purify your act, when you purify your deed from noticing mankind, from noticing creation, you are not noticing anyone. When you have cleared your eyes from seeing mankind, when you act upon that for Allah (swt), that is ikhlas. Why are you still noticing others when you are doing your work? That means you have a way to go. You have to act only for Allah (swt) without noticing others.
I said this one time before and I’ll repeat it here so we can understand it better. Mashaa-Allah, we have sheep at the farm and we have some people who attend to them. In Pakistan they have sheep. In India they have sheep. In America they have sheep. When you are praying Dhuhr namaaz, do you look to see if the sheep are watching you to say, “Let me pray very well so they can notice me.” Do you do that? Do you notice the cattle behind you when you are praying, O Muslim sheppard? You don’t. You pray without noticing if these sheep are looking at you or not looking at you. Are these sheep admiring you or not admiring you? You are performing your salah for Allah (swt). You are not noticing makhlooq.
If you are at the level, you have become a saint. You are somebody worthy of being followed because you will teach that to those following you, otherwise you will teach them ways other than ikhlas and that is not acceptable. Allah (swt) does not accept anything other than ad-deenu ‘l-khalis, the pure deen, the pure way to Allah (swt). We have a long way to go.
They ask, “Why this and why that?” If you can teach ikhlas, if you can teach how to perform worship of Allah (swt) without noticing the people behind you, you are a saint and you will teach that to the others who are trying to be saints. Otherwise you will teach them, “Notice the ones behind you.” When you notice the ones behind you, you have committed shirk al-khafee. Rasoolullah (s) shirk al-khafee is ar-riya`, when you are noticing others and doing things for others for your own advantage and for their advantage. That is not acceptable in Islam.
May Allah (swt) forgive us. Learn Qur’an. Allah (swt) talks about dawil al-bab. Lib is the inside of the mind, the mind that has rid itself of all desires. Allah (swt) praises the ones who have a mind that they can use, a mind that can understand. That is furqan, separation of Haqq and batil. Know what is Haqq, O Muslim. Know what is batil, O Muslim. Follow the Haqq from Allah (swt) as He said in Surah Muhammad:
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلْبَـٰطِلَ وَأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلْحَقَّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ كَذَٰلِكَ يَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ
wa anna ’Lladheena amanoo attaba`u ‘l-haqqa mi ‘r-Rabbihim.
This because those who reject Allah follow vanities, while those who believe follow the Truth from their Lord: Thus does Allah set forth for men their lessons by similitudes. (Surah Muhammad, 47:3)
Follow Haqq. don’t follow the baatil. We don’t know Haqq from batil anymore. He said:
Wa laa talbisu ‘l-Haqqa bi ‘l-baatil wa taktumu ‘l-Haqqa wa antum ta`lamoon.
And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is). (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:42)
Surah Baqarah, first few pages. If you can reach there, don’t mix Haqq and batil and hide what is true. Don’t mix truth and falsehood. Do you know what they give the rats to get rid of them? They give them sugar-coated poison. It looks like sugar on the outside but when you eat it, you’re gone. Don’t mix Haqq with baatil.
What do we say? These are not my words. These are the words I have heard from my teachers and they have heard from their teachers all the way to Sahaabah Ikram (r) and they heard from Rasoolullah (s) and he heard from Sayyidina Jibreel (a) and Sayyidina Jibreel (a) brought it down from Allah (swt).
These are the words that you have to know and understand. Leave everything else. It is of no use unless it is compatible with Kalamu ‘Llah. If it’s not compatible with Kalamu ‘Llah, leave. You don’t need that. That’s not going to take you anywhere near Paradise. It will take you to the ones who have opposed Kalamu ‘Llah. May Allah (swt) forgive us.
I’m asking forgiveness from my Lord. I am asking forgiveness if I have hurt anybody but you have to say. You have to be from the ones who talk,
wa laa yakhaafoona lawmata laa’im.
fearing no blame from anyone (Surat al-Ma’ida, 5:55)
Don’t be afraid from the blame of somebody or somebody is going to insult you. No, say Haqq, say the Truth. If they don’t know the Truth, what can you do? That’s why the best thing is to keep silent but at Jumu`ah you talk to the Ummah. All the imams have to talk to the Ummah. They have to tell them to read the Qur’an, understand the Qur’an. That is your murshid. That is your huda. That is your guidance. The true guide and murshid is Allah (swt)’s Words. If you say no then you are out of Islam. May Allah (swt) forgive us.
