What You Own Will Last Longer Than You

Shaykh Nour Mohamad Kabbani

Jumu`ah Khutbah

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

O mu’mins! Allah (swt) has given the ni`mah of being a mu’min. What greater favor than that? Rasoolullah (s) has come to deliver the keys to Paradise. Rasoolullah (s) has come and has asked humanity to accept Kalimatu ‘t-Tawheed, Lā ilāha illa ’Llāh Muḥammadun Rasūlullāh (s). He said if you say that, you have gained access to Paradise. Some did, some did not. We are from the ones who have accepted and we have said everywhere we go, in public and in private, Lā ilāha illa ’Llāh Muḥammadun Rasūlullāh (s).

What more do you need, O Muslim? Why are you running after something that is not yours? To whom belongs Mulk? What is Mulk? Anything you can own. To whom belongs everything? It is a shame that a Muslim knows but he doesn’t understand. Yes, all Muslims and mu’mins say, to Allah (swt) belongs Mulku ’s-samāwāti wa ’l-arḍ. Everything in Heavens and on earth is for Allah (swt). If it is that then why are you competing with Maliku ‘l-Mulk? Why are people competing with Allah (swt), saying, “It is mine”? This is not yours! Mulk is not yours.

O Muslim! You have to understand that “to Allah (swt) belongs everything” means something else. It means that what Allah (swt) has given to you is for you to use it in His Way. On the Day of Judgement Allah (swt) will ask: limani ’l-mulku ’l-yawm.

The Day whereon they will (all) come forth: not a single thing concerning them is hidden from Allah. Whose will be the dominion that Day?" That of Allah, the One the Irresistible! (Surah Mu’min, 40:16)

Have you ever come across that verse? Allah (swt) will ask, Muslim or non-Muslim, “To whom belongs Mulk?” What are you running after, O Muslim? We are running after what we will leave and go. Which king took with him all his treasures, O Muslim? Leave the non-Muslims. They follow their own ways but you are the one who accepted, Lā ilāha illa ’Llāh Muḥammadun Rasūlullāh (s). What is all of this rush for dunya? You will leave it sooner or later. You might leave it today, you might leave it tomorrow, you might leave it in two weeks. What did you do with what Allah (swt) has given you? There is the Hadith of Rasoolullah (s):

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا حُلْوَةٌ خَضِرَةٌ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ مُسْتَخْلِفُكُمْ فِيهَا فَيَنْظُرُ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ

Ad-dunyā ḥulwatun khaḍirah. Dunya is glamorous, dunya is beautiful. It dazzles you. It bewilders you. You run after it.

Then We made you heirs in the land after them, to see how ye would behave! (Surah Yunus, 10:14)

Allah (swt) will put you here to see how you do. What are you doing in dunya? You tell me. You’re hoarding things up in your bank accounts. “What bank accounts, shaykh? That’s an old thing.” It’s bitcoins, crypto and all kinds of stuff that they have invented. It’s a shame that Muslims are running after this dunya, collecting this dunya and where are you sending it? Into the thin air. You’re sending it to New York and London, to all the stock markets around the world. You are giving what you are earning to everybody else and you cannot hold it. What are you doing? Allah (swt) will ask, limani ‘l-Mulki ‘l-yaum. What do you say? Lillahi Wahidu ‘l-Qahhar! “To Allah (swt) belongs everything.”

What is your job on earth? Don’t lose that key. Wherever you key, don’t lose that key. Wherever you are sitting, standing, walking, working, eating, you have to remember that key of, Lā ilāha illa ’Llāh Muḥammadun Rasūlullāh (s)! You have to believe in that and keep that safe. That’s what Shaytan is after. He is after taking your iman. He doesn’t if people have the whole world. It’s for no one. He’s after your iman.

A Muslim, a mu’min understands that but you have to comprehend what it means. Yes, you supply your family with what they need. That is halal. Allah (swt) said:

Yā ayyuhā ’n-nāsu kulū mimmā fī ’l-arḍi ḥalālan ṭayyibā

"O mankind! Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth (Surat al-Baqara, 2:168)

Eat from the earth what is halal and sweet. Tayyib, something that your eyes like. Don’t go after something that your eyes don’t like. They are trying to make you eat insects. Gather from this earth for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for charity for what Allah (swt) has put you in charge but don’t lose that key. Know that you will leave what you have. Everybody left what they had.

Our `ulama have said in their books, “If you like something on earth, if you like something in the world, wait to see if you pass away and it will remain.” I am not from here. From the airport yesterday, they took me down Sandy Springs. Where are the previous owners? Gone. The mansions remained. If you like something from this world and you are aspiring to acquire it, understand that you will go and it will stay or you will stay and it will go.

Indeed, the world is sweet and green, and Allah has appointed you as successors therein and is watching how you act… (Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad)

Did you see the fires in California? I have friends down there. I go to LA sometimes. They called and said, “We were in this house for forty years with all Persian vases and rugs and paintings and furniture. In ten minutes it was all gone.” She is safe but it went. You either go before it and it stays or you stay and it goes or both of you go. People have died in their fancy cars. When I was in LA a few weeks ago, someone showed me a clip of a man who bought a new Ferrari. He crashed it and died in it.

A Muslim, a mu’min has to know that what he has is not for him. Allah (swt) is looking at how you use it. It’s going to pass to your inheritors. It’s going to pass to your children, cousins, friends, depending on who is behind you. It was never years, so why the rush, why the anguish, why the pain? “Let me get more of this world, this dunya.” If you have a roof over your head and you have food for the day and you have clothes on you, covering your private parts, you already have wealth and everything you need from dunya. That is for the Muslim. The mu’mins are on the wrong way.

Mashaa-Allah, we have young ones coming up. They all have dreams. You want to get everything that you lay eyes on. I was in that situation. The older people are in that situation. The young ones are coming up, aspiring to have this world. You might go and it stays. It’s never yours. If you acquire something then wait until it leaves you and see that it will never return to you. Every file bankruptcy? Mashaa-Allah, you were a rich man. What happened to you? You had businesses, penthouses, boats. What happened to all of that? It went and never came back. If you have that in your house, in your business, in your land, wherever it is, know that it will leave you and it will never come back.

What remains? Hisaab remains. Wait until it leaves you with no return and wait until you find that hisaab. The hisaab for what you have acquired will be on you, not on the inheritors, not the ones who took it after bankruptcy, court payment and everything. You acquired it. That’s why it’s very important to follow the advice of saliheen, the pious ones. Allah (swt) did not leave us without any advice. That hisaab is coming. Mashaa-Allah, you acquire millions of dollars. What happens at the end? Allah (swt) will tell you, “Read your book by yourself. Tell me if what you have done is good or not.” Iqra kitaabun. Isn’t that true? You read your book. Angels won’t read your book for you.

Iqraʾ kitābaka kafā bi-nafsika ’l-yawma ʿalayka ḥasībā.

(It will be said to him:) "Read thine (own) record: Sufficient is thy soul this day to make out an account against thee." (Surat al-Isra, 17:14)

You are the one who will hold yourself to account. Tell Me. Do you like what is in this book? How will our situation be? We will be embarrassed. We will be shy but it will be too late.

Allah (swt) gave us a story in the Holy Qur’an. It is not only a story, it’s conduct, it’s a way of life. What you read and understand has to be applied in your life. That’s what Rasoolullah (s) was about. Hadhrat Aisha, Ummu ‘l-Mu’mineen (r) was asked about the khuluq of Rasoolullah (s), “How was the conduct, how were the manners, what was the behavior of Rasoolullah (s)? How did he carry himself?” She said, Kāna khuluquhu ’l-Qurʾān. That means everything that was revealed in the Qur’an, he acquired externally and internally.

Now we only acquire the external. We have neglected the internal part. The Qur’an is full of internal improvements. In Surah Luqman Allah (swt) tells the dialogue of Luqman (a) with his son. Have you ever come across that? If you read the Qur’an, you will come across it. Asta`eedhu billah:

"O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them). (Surah Luqman, 31:16)

Yā bunayya. He starts with, “O my dear son,” to get his heart to soften. If it be that. What is it? If the goodness you have done or the badness that you have done equals the weight of a grain of a mustard seed and it is in a rock, that means it’s in the most hidden space you can imagine, you can never see what’s inside a rock. Even if it’s inside the most hidden thing and the most safe then, that goodness or badness, if it’s in Heavens or on earth, Allah (swt) will bring it out. Inna ’Llāha Laṭīfun Khabīr. Certainly Allah (swt) reaches everything even if it’s hidden. He is aware of everything.

Don’t you get scared when you hear this? No. When you read the Qur’an, you have to be scared. You have to have khashya, otherwise the Qur'an has not entered your heart.

Innamā yakhshā ’Llāha min ʿibādihi ’l-ʿulamāʾ.

And so among men and crawling creatures and cattle, are those of various colors. Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for Allah is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving. (Surah Fatir, 35:28)

Allah (swt) says, “The ones who are afraid of Me, in awe of Me are the ones who know Qur’ani ‘l-Kareem.” One thing of goodness or one thing of badness, if it’s hidden in a rock, if it’s in Heavens, if it’s on earth, Allah (swt) will bring it. He will pull you to account for it. This is Qur’ani ‘l-Kareem.

Take that. Stop running after dunya and the posts that you want to have and the positions that you want to have and the greatness you want to be seen, and the fame you want to achieve and the prestige you want to have. Nothing remains. Titles disappear the minute you die. You’re not a CEO anymore. You’re not the president of a hospital anymore. You are not the president of a mosque anymore. You are not the president of a company anymore. You are not this or that. You are not a PhD, MD, JD and all the other D’s that they have next to their names. You’re not any of that. Who are you? Mayyit. As-salatu `alaa ‘l-amwat. How many times do we hear that when we go to Makkah? No titles. Yeah, for some people they play drums and music and take them in a big celebration to their grave, Muslim or non-Muslim. At the end, they all leave. Do they go inside the grave? What happened to your wife? What happened to your child? What happened to your father and mother who loved you and always wanted to be with you? Do they go to the grave with you? They don’t.

What do you find in the grave? You find what you believed in. If you have taken it to heart, you will find happiness. Even for the believer, Allah (swt) promises Rahmah. He said, if you don’t associate with Me, Allah (swt) will forgive you.

Inna ’Llāha lā yaghfiru an yushraka bihī wa yaghfiru mā dūna dhālika liman yashāʾ.

Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgives anything else, to whom He pleases; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:48)

Allah (swt) does not forgive shirk but He forgives everything else to whomever He wants. When you utter Kalimatu ‘t-Tawheed, you have entered into the Rahmah of Allah (swt). You have entered into the Maghfirah of Allah (swt). Allah (swt) can give. Nobody can ask Him anything but you have to take the level up. You have to take the message that Rasoolullah (s) brought into your heart.

First know that everything you do, you will be accounted for. The second verse in Surah Luqman. Some people say he is Nabi, some people say he is Wali. Allah (swt) knows best but is from the saliheen.

After he said that he said, Yā bunayya, aqimi ’ṣ-ṣalāh. “O my dear son! Stand in the Presence of your Lord in salah, establish regular prayer, be constant in your prayer.” Waʾmur bi ’l-maʿrūf. “Show people goodness.” What is goodness? Whatever brings you closer to Allah (swt). That is the reality of goodness. Any good act you do makes you approach Allah (swt) more. Wanha ʿani ’l-munkar. “Forbid what is bad. Forbid all that is bad.” What is badness? Whatever takes you away from Allah (swt) or whatever distracts you from the worship of Allah (swt). Wasbir alaa...saabir. “And be patient with what has afflicted you from difficulties, from hardships, from sicknesses, from poverty, from worry, from concern. Inna dhālika min ʿazmi ’l-umūr. That is not an easy task. But Allah (swt) likes that from a mu’min.

"O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever befalls you; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs. (Surah Luqman, 31:17)

You have to be constant in your prayer. You have to do everything that makes you approach Allah (swt) and teach people how to do that. Forbid yourself anything that makes you go away from Allah (swt) or be far from Allah (swt) and teach people about that and be patient with what has befallen you.

Where are we from that? Alhamdulillah, some of us do it, some of us do it half-half, some of us believe but don’t apply it. May Allah (swt) forgive all of us and allow us to take the Qur’an into our hearts. Take the khuluq of Rasoolullah (s), his manners, his characteristics, his conduct that was the Qur’an. After that is the third ayah:

وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ

Wa lā tuṣaʿir khaddaka li ’n-nās wa lā tamshi fī ’l-arḍi maraḥā. Inna ’Llāha lā yuḥibbu kulla mukhtālin fakhūr.

"And swell not your cheek (with pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loves not any arrogant boaster.” (Surah Luqman, 31:18)

Don’t turn your face away from people in pride. “You’re talking to me?” How many people do that from Muslims? Parents are talking to the teenagers and they turn away from their father and mother. Your friend is talking to you, your mother is talking to you, a regular person, commonfolk are talking to you. The teaching of the Holy Qur’an is don’t turn your face away from them with pride. Be humble. Turn wholly to them. If somebody talked to Rasoolullah (s), he turned his whole body towards them.

Don’t walk on this earth arrogantly, confident, proud. Allah (swt) does not like the ones who are arrogant and the ones who boast.

Do we boast? We do. Are we proud sometimes? We are. Allah (swt) says, “I don’t love this group.” You have to be humble. If Allah (swt) gave you ni`mah, it is from Him. You have to thank Him. It is said: Lā yasūqu ’l-khayra illā ’Llāh. Only Allah (swt) can bring khayr to you. Wa lā yadfaʿu ’s-sūʾa illā ’Llāh. Only Allah (swt) can take harm away from you. Wa lā yunazzilu ’n-niʿmata illā ’Llāh. And whatever ni`mah has reached you, it is from Allah (swt). Therefore, we put our trust in Allah (swt). Be a higher grade mu`min. Be a higher grade Muslim. Rise up in the levels of iman. Allah (swt) has said in the Holy Qur’an:

Yā ayyuhā ’lladhīna āmanū āminū bi’Llāhi wa Rasūlih.

O you who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He has sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denies Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messenger., and the Day of Judgment, has gone far, far astray. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:136)

O you who believe, believe. That means there’s stronger ways of iman, stronger grades of iman and that happens when you take Qur’ani ‘l-Kareem and the aayat of Qur’ani ‘l-Kareem into your heart. Teach it to yourself, teach it to your family, teach it to others and conduct yourself in that way.

The continuation of the verses. Sayyidina Luqman (a) is telling his son, “When you walk, don’t walk like a proud one and don’t walk like a little one,” in between, moderate. Waghḍuḍ min ṣawtik. “Lower your voice.” Inna ankara l-aṣwāti laṣawtu l-ḥamīr. The harshest of voices, the most annoying of voices are the noises of donkeys. Who is the donkey? The donkey is the one who carries books and doesn’t understand them.

The ones who have been the book. It is as if a donkey is carrying these loads of books on it and it doesn’t understand anything from it. Don’t be from them. I don’t want to mention their names, so we will leave it. Allah (swt) gave the example of people who were given the book and they did not carry it. They carried it like a donkey carrying books, not understanding anything in that book. Don’t be like that. Understand what’s in the books of Qur’an and Sunnah. Follow them as much as you can. The harshest of voices, inna ankara l-aṣwāt. Sometimes you listen to someone and you say, “I don’t want to listen to you anymore.” Because they think they have `ilm but they don’t. They have no wisdom. The Christian knows the Qur’an. How come he’s not a Muslim? People can read the Qur’an. It is `ilm but they don’t have the wisdom. Be from the ones who understand. Read the Qur’an and understand the Qur’an. Inshaa-Allah, Allah (swt) will allow us into His Forgiveness and into His Mercy.

Learn how to behave in this world. In the Holy Qur’an, Allah (swt) is teaching us manners, is teaching us everything we need. Rasoolullah (s) has taken that as his characteristic, as his conduct on earth. Where are we from following his way? We fight with each other, we kick each other, we gossip with each other, we plan for each other, we plot for each other. How is that a good way of following the Sunnah of Rasoolullah (s)?

One Waliyullah named Ibrahim al-Khawwas (q) said, “To clean up these hearts you have to do five things.” That applies to myself and I’ll share it with all of my brothers and sisters. To clean up these hearts means to allow the heart to accept the Holy Qur’an. You have to read the Qur’an section by section, word by word and understand what it means deeply. When you open the Qur’an, don’t pass over it very quickly. Take your time. And empty your stomach. Alhamdulillah, Ramadan is coming. Ramadan comes and people empty their stomachs and they feel lighter. They feel better. They feel more inclined to worship. When you eat heavily, how are you going to pray Isha or how are you going to come to the masjid at Fajr time when you eat something heavy at midnight?

First read the Qur’an with deep understanding. Second, try to cut down on how much you eat. Third, Qiyāmu ’l-Layl, wake up at night and pray when nobody is around. Fourth, at Fajr time you have to plead to Allah (swt). Five, sit with the good ones. That’s how you treat your heart. May Allah (swt) allow our hearts to reach qalbun salīm. It is important. You will be asked on the Day of Judgement, “How come you did not come to Me with qalbun salīm? Nothing benefited you. Everything that you run after in this world left you behind. How come you did not come to Me with qalbun salīm when I sent you the Qur’an?”

Yā ayyuhā ’n-nāsu qad jāʾatkum mawʿiẓatun min rabbikum wa shifāʾun limā fī ’ṣ-ṣudūr wa hudan wa raḥmatun li ’l-muʾminīn.

O mankind! There has come to you an exhortation from your Lord, a healing for what is in the hearts, a guidance, and a mercy for the believers. (Surat Yūnus,10:57)

It is a cure for what’s in your heart. Inshaa-Allah, we can understand that and continue with that.
