What Happens When We Say “La ilaha illa-Llah”

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, nawayna siyaam, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

Alhamdulillah we are in the month of Prophet (s), Rabi` al-Awwal. ‘Rabi`’ is the month in which trees blossom, and Rabi` al-Awwal is the first month that prepares the trees with beautiful flowers, blossoms and nice fragrance, and also in which Prophet (s) was born. Islam was born with Prophet (s): if there was no Prophet (s) there would be no Islam. That garden, that beautiful flower that gives a fragrant smell to everyone is in Rabi` al-Awwal, in the life of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Allah (swt) created him from His Noor, Light, qabadtu qabdatan min nooree qultu laha koonee Muhammad, and it is said that Allah took one handful from His Light and said to it, "Be, Muhammad!" Immediately there was a Manifestation of someone standing in that Divine Presence. How we don't know, only Prophet (s) knows, but Allah wants us to know in a different way, for us to love His Prophet (s). He wants everyone to know that no one will enter Paradise without the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s).

We are celebrating, observing and enjoying the mercy Allah has sent to humanity. Allah made Heavens and Paradises to love Muhammad (s) and show him their beauty. When he went to Israa' wa Mi`raaj, he saw what Allah wanted him to see from the First Heaven all the way up to Qaaba Qawsayni Aw Adna. His Ascension is as `abd, servant, and `abd has a form, a physical body. Angels' ascensions are not with a form, they are created from light; they don't have a body, they have a unique, subtle appearance that nothing else has.

To show His love to His Prophet (s), with the physicality of His Prophet (s) as a human being, Allah (swt) made him to act and be like an angel. Allah gave him a higher level, for all angels to make salawaat on him in order to achieve Allah's happiness, ao angels are competing in salawaat on Prophet (s). Therefore, our duty is as Allah (swt) said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

Verily, Allah and His angels send praise on the Prophet. O Believers! Pray upon him and greet him with a worthy salutation.

(Surat al-'Ahzaab, 33:56)

Allah is asking us to make salawaat on Prophet (s). Haqeeqat an-Nabi, the Reality of Prophet (s), is still within in him. What he showed us and what he showed Sahaabah (r) of his appearance is minimal. On the Day of Judgement, Allah (swt) is going to open and give permission. When Prophet (s) wants to go into sajda as `abd, Allah will open all that Light to His Prophet (s) and everyone will be amazed. Every Muslim and every mu'min will be covered by this Light like a shade, and it will come on everyone that is in that Presence.

Allah (swt) dressed him from Haqeeqat ar-Ruh, the Reality of the Soul, when he was in Qaaba Qawsayni Aw Adna, how it can act. Awliyaullah are struggling to reach that Reality when you reach a level where good and bad are balancing each other. If you see something good you will be happy, if you see something bad you will say, ‘This is from Allah (swt),’ and still you have to be happy. Khayrihi wa sharrihi min Allah, what is good and what is bad is coming from Allah's Will.

We have to fulfill our duties and obligations that Allah (swt) ordered us. Prophet (s) is the guide for Awliyaullah, and he never stopped from guiding. Human beings get tired from doing awraad and salawaat because we are still struggling with our four enemies: nafs, dunya, hawa and Shaytan. These four enemies are here to bite us. They are behind us wherever we go and when the right moment to bite us comes, they bite. This what we call in Arabic saaʿat al-ghaflah, the heedless moment. When you enter it, you are lost, you think everything is against you and you are perfect.

As soon as you listen to the four enemies, nafs (the self, ego), dunya (life of the world), hawa (desire), Shaytan (Satan), you are struggling within these four walls, you are trapped, so how to go out? Only by guidance of Awliyaullah. You may think Awliyaullah are far away, but no, in reality every one of Ummat an-Nabi (s), all humanity, has been assigned to a Wali to guide them as Allah did not leave us without guidance. So whenever you pray, fast, make salawaat, remember that a Wali is watching you as Allah gave him that power. He assigned a guide to every group of people, which is why with their power Awliyaullah can be everywhere in different forms to guide people; they can appear here and there, anywhere.

How does this happen? It is so easy. Allah (swt) took His Prophet (s) to Qaaba Qawsayni Aw Adna, where he reached without fatigue or problems. From that secret of Ascension, Awliyaullah guide their followers to ascend and run away from the four enemies that put them in a square, but what is needed is whenever you sit, to say, “Yaa Rabbee! Whomever you assigned to guide me, I am calling on him.” If that Wali is in the East and you are in the West, he will reach you. That was opened recently for Ummat an Nabi (s) and that’s why, Grandshaykh `AbdAllah, may Allah grant him endless blessings, said, “I give you permission to call on these Awliya, because from one Wali to another there is a step you must ascend so that he will take you up in Ascension to reach Prophet (s). That why he told us to recite As-Sayyid As-Saadat [http://sufilive.com/dua/Sayyid-ad-Dua-By-GrandShaykh-Abdullah-Dagistani.pdf] Sh Taher will modify this

These are forty Awliya and the coming, last one is Mahdi (a). From one to another you will ascend: for example, from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim to Grandshaykh `AbdAllah, from Grandshaykh to Shaykh Sharafuddin, from Shaykh Sharafuddin to Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Madani and so on, all the way to Prophet (s) with this du`a. For sure you will be under their gaze. I am saying this because Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, “Tell them one of the du`as that will open dunya and Akhirah for them.” So whomever recites this inshaa-Allah will move forward and ascend more and more. In this dunya, you run and run and in the end you leave everything and go. We, as human beings, are running and running and at a certain moment we stop, realizing that whatever we ran after is baatil, false, it has no benefit, we ran for dunya, but it disappointed us. Awliyaullah don’t do that, every moment in their life is running for Akhirah: their desires, their love, their teaching, their guidance is all for Akhirah. They prepare their followers for Akhirah, not dunya.

You are not going to benefit from anyone except through leaving behind your knowledge. That’s why the power of a human being will disconnect from everything when they are dying except from three things, which are Sadiqat al-Jaariya: a continuous, flowing donation you gave that is written for you as if you fulfilled it every moment during your life: such as contributing to a mosque or to a homeless person or to people in need. So many things come under the category of ‘sadaqa’ and when you give in the Way of Allah that `amal will not discontinue: Allah will keep it running until the Day Of Judgement as if you are doing it every moment, as if your life has been stretched and you are living all the way to the End and you will be rewarded with that as Sadiqat al-Jaariya.

ينقطع عمل ابن ادم الا من ثلاث: صدقه جاريه; علم ينتفع به; ولد صالح يدعوا له

The deeds of the Children of Sayyidina Adam are cut except three: a flowing donation in Allah’s Way, and some knowledge that you leave behind (that benefits people) and a child who prays for you. (Muslim)

Wa waladun saalihun yad`oo lah, “A child that you leave behind you, a son or a daughter that will pray for you,” or a community or group of people who remember, “This person was in our lives, they guided us and did their best for us.” That’s what you need, Wa waladun saalihun yad`oo lah, a child that will pray for you.

When the shaykh dies, you have a person that will pray for you and support you--shuyookh from their grave can support you and you can support them. So when Allah says, “Wa waladun saalihun yad`oo lah,” it means someone in your life whom you took as a guide and he is guiding you. Alhamdulillah, Allah guided us to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) and Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q).

The other one, wa `ilmun yuntafi`u bih, “Leave behind you a knowledge from which people will benefit,” is very rare today, but there are groups here and there around the world and may Allah bless those people who are working hard from scholars and Awliya to bring people together.

So our life is in Allah’s Hands: we don’t know when Allah will call us. He can call you at any moment, including when you are not ready, and you will ask Allah, “Can I delay this, to prepare myself for death?” and the answer will come, “No, I gave you the opportunity in your life.”

So since that statement, Rabi`ah al-`Adawiyya (q) watched her life very closely to not make any mistake, because she didn’t know when the Angel of Death will come and take her soul: will she be ready at that moment or not, so she was ready every moment of her life. Let us ask ourselves this question: are we ready for the Angel of Death? No, because we are not doing exactly what should be done. With respect to what everyone is doing, alhamdulillah, we feel we are not ready to receive the Angel of Death with our `amal. When Awliyaullah receive the Angel of Death they go willingly; `ibaadullah have to go when the Angel of Death comes. Those who are following the Right guidance will go to Akhirah happy in the presence of Prophet (s), while those who are not looking at their deeds to be fine moments will be in difficulty. On the Day of Judgement, when Allah questions someone He will ask for their angels’ notebooks in which everything is written, don’t ask how!

كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا

Read your book! Sufficient is your soul this day to make an account against you. (Surat al-Israa, 17:14)

Allah asks you to read what is written in your book and judge yourself; therefore, you cannot say, “Yaa Rabbee, no, this is wrong, there is no such thing!” All your deeds are continuously recorded, so may Allah erase our sins! It is said when Allah (swt) calls His `abd and judges him, ninety-nine notebooks filled with what you have done in every moment of your life will appear on one side of the Scale to check you. They come with Kun fayakoon and everyone will know he is not in good shape, that something horrible might happen, and the angels put all his sayyi’aat on one side and there is no hasanaat to put on the right side as everything he did in his life was bad! Are we like that, or not? We are like that! Unfortunately, we will be judged and sent to Hellfire, only with the exception that Allah will put on your tongue to save you and to save everyone, to remind you at that moment to say, “Yaa Rabbee, I noticed that everything is in that Scale and I have to go to Hellfire, but I am not seeing what I have testified in my life on the other side of the Scale.” At that moment a paper of Noor, Heavenly Light will come, and written on it, “Laa ilaaha illa ’Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” because you said that in dunya! [Mawlana weeps.] Then Allah (swt) will say, “Because you said that in dunya, I am saving you to go to Paradise!” If we say this one statement, “Laa ilaaha illa ’Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” we are saved, and if we don’t say it we are lost, so say it! Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah `alayhaa nahyaa wa `alayhaa namoot wa `alayhaa nalqa ‘Llah.

May Allah forgive us. May Allah bless us. May Allah support us. Don’t think you are driving all this way for nothing! It’s enough to say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah” in such a gathering to save us in dunya and Akhirah.

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
