What Goes Around Comes Around

Shaykh Nour Mohamad Kabbani

From Mawlana Shaykh Nazim's Personal Notes

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.

Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.

Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi, madad.

I feel shy to speak in the presence of `ulama. Astaghfirullah. It’s not our right. We are below that, but as I heard from my teacher, it’s about teaching, it is about reminding. Allah (swt) has taught us adab in the Holy Qur’an and He said, asta`eedhu billah:

وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

But teach (your Message) for teaching benefits the Believers. (Surah Az-Zariyat, 51:55)

Wa dhakir fa inna 'd-dhikraa tanfa`u ’l-mu'mineen. Remind the mu'mins. Don’t put them in the position of jahil that, “You are ignorant and I am knowledgeable, so listen to me. I am going to teach you something.” That is not good adab. It is better adab to say, “I’m reminding myself. I am from the mu'mins and I am reminding my brothers and sisters about the few things I’ve learned from our teachers.” Don’t attribute `ilm to yourself. That is also bad adab.

In tariqah we learn adab. Outside of tariqah, people are learning but they are not keeping adab with people, with the `ulama or with Awliyaullah. Rather, they are inflating themselves, saying, “I have become someone who is big.” That is exactly what Shaytan has done. Shaytan said, “I am big.”

Ana khayrun min. “I am better than him. I know more than him. I worshiped more than him. I am a different make than him.” That is kibr. That is not accepted in Allah (swt)’s Divine Presence.

Qaala fah’bit minha. “Descend. You were in a good rank in the Divine Presence. Now, go down.” Fama yaqoonu laqa anta takabbara fiha. I think that is in Surah al-`Araf. You cannot put yourself higher than others in the Divine Presence. Fakhruj, “Get out.”

What a scary address by Allah (swt). If Allah (swt) tells you, “Get out,” fakhruj minha fa innaka rajeem, “You are from the humiliated ones.”

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

(Allah) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed. (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:34)

Kibr is the biggest bad characteristic of a human being. What is kibr? Kibr means to make yourself bigger than others. “I am bigger than him. I am higher than him. I am better than him.” Once you start thinking like that, know that you are following Shaytan. There’s no kibr in the Divine Presence. Asta`eedhubillah:

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity). (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:47)

Ikhwanan `alaa suroorin muttaqabileen. The people of Jannah are brothers. “Sareer” is a big couch or a big seat, but, muttaqabileen, “Facing each other.” Not, “I am higher than you. I’m lower than you. Your back is turned to me. My side is turned to you.” Sometimes when you come to greet somebody, they go like this, especially women. I’ve seen it. Not me greeting the women, among themselves. They turn. Also men, when you greet them, “Wa`alaykum as-salaam.” That is kibr. Wa la tu’saadakha lin naas.

The Qur’an al-Kareem teaches adab. Don’t turn your face from people in arrogance that, “Who are you to speak to me?” Adab is very important. Tariqah teaches adab. Awliyaullah teach adab. The first is kibr. Al-kibr wa takabbur wa ‘l-istighfaar. May Allah (swt) keep us away from all of that.

Always humble yourself down. If you are going to speak, know that you are only reminding yourself and others of what Allah (swt) has bestowed on us from His Favors, from `ilm, from Noor, what Rasoolullah (s) has bestowed on us from his `ilm, from his Noor that he has taken from Allah (swt), what Awliyaullah have gained from Rasoolullah (s) of `ilm and noor. That’s what you need. We don’t need anything else.

Inshaa-Allah, we will speak from what we learned from them. This center is the center of Imam al-Ghazali. Sayyidina Imam al-Ghazali (r) has a book called Sharhu ‘l-Asma’. He talks about Asmaa’ullah al-Husnaa. He takes one Holy Name and explains about it. Lately, I read about Ismu ‘l-Ghafar, Al-Ghafar. He said and Awliyaullah have said Ghafar is the One that covers. It comes from “sitr.” Ghafar is to cover, to conceal. They said that Allah (swt) showed the beauty and concealed the ugly. The first thing that He has done for a human being is He has shown his outer beauty and concealed his inner dirtiness. When He created you, He created you in the best shape, in the best form, and clean. He hid the dirtiness inside of you.

Awliyaullah have said He has covered the inner dirtiness by the outer beauty. Look at yourself. What a difference between your outside and your inside, physically. That’s how Allah (swt) has concealed the dirty or ugly parts. Not only that, He also concealed your thoughts from others. Imagine if somebody else knows what you’re thinking about. What bad intentions lurk in your heart? What bad thoughts can travel through your heart, what bad thoughts of others can travel in your heart? It is said that if people knew what you harbor in your heart about others, they might kill you. Bad intentions are in the hearts of people. Bad thoughts are in the hearts of people. Bad planning and plotting is in the hearts of people, but Allah (swt) has concealed that too from others. He is Ghafar.

First, He conceals the inner dirtiness with the outer beauty, then He conceals what goes on in your heart from others. Third, the biggest one, is that He conceals the sins you have made. He conceals all the sins in a way that they’re even forgotten from the minds of people and the malaa’ikah will also forget about them. That’s how far He can go in His Forgiveness. He can erase all. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) has said that Allah (swt) forgives everything that happened from a mu'min after he became a sweet mu'min, tayyib. You have to become tayyib. At-tayyibaatu bi ‘t-tayyibeen. Wa ‘t-tayyiboona bi ‘tayyibaat. Rasoolullah (s) is Tayyib. That’s why Hadhrat `Aisha (r) is Tayyiba. Don’t fall into that trap.

If you want to be with Rasoolullah (s), you have to be from tayyiboon, tayyibeen or tayyibaat, men and women. You have to be from the sweet and kind ones because Rasoolullah (s) and Hadhrat `Aisha Siddiq a (r) and the others were tayyib, sweet, kind and tender. If you want to be with them, you have to be as such.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) has said that Allah (swt)’s Maghfirah is so great that He forgives everything that happens before and He makes you forget it. Otherwise, if you don’t forget what happened to you or what you did before, you will not be able to continue. He said thousands of Sahaabah-i-kiram had worshiped idols before they became Muslim, before they became mu'min. Some, not all of them, worshiped idols. After fath, all of Arabia became Muslim and they got rid of idols and statues. But people don’t remember that anymore. It’s not in the minds of people that Sahaabah used to do that. Rather, it’s in the minds of people that Sahaabah were always right, were always straight, were always on the right path. That’s how far Allah (swt) forgives the sins that you have committed from before.

You as a mu'min have to forgive the sins of others. If you want to have a share from the Noor of that Holy Name, you have to conceal the faults of your brother so Allah (swt) can conceal your faults on Judgment Day as Sayyidina Rasoolullah (s) has narrated. You have to learn how to cover the faults of your brother. You have to learn how to cover the faults of your sister, not to expose them. That is your job, to follow the Noor of Allah (swt)‘s Holy Names. Only see the goodness that they have done and forget the badness they have done. Only see their good characteristics and forget their bad characteristics. Only see the good signs in them and leave the bad signs that you see in them.

It is narrated that Sayyidina `Isa (a) was passing by and they found the carcass of a dog and it was stinking because it’s dead. The students of Hadhrat `Isa (a) said, “What a stinky, rotten animal.” Sayyidina `Isa (a) said, “What white, beautiful teeth of this animal.” Sayyidina `Isa (a) was teaching his disciples to look at the goodness of that thing, whatever it is, dead or alive, ugly or beautiful. He only looked at the beautiful things and he did not mention the bad things that he saw in that creature. He was teaching them.

Awliyaullah have said, you mu'mins have to only see the goodness in your brothers and sisters and conceal and overlook the badness of your brothers and sisters. That’s the way that we are on. Sayyidina Imam al-Ghazali (r) has explained that and you can go into the details in his `Uloom. You can dive deep into his knowledge and learn. Awliyaullah are teaching us to forgive. I never heard anything bad about anybody from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q). I never heard him gossiping about anybody privately or publicly. It is narrated that Rasoolullah (s) used to tell his Sahaabah, “Don’t tell me anything bad about my companions. I want to come out to see them with my chest open to all of them. Don’t gossip about my companions. Conceal.” When you conceal the faults, Allah (swt) will conceal your faults. Otherwise, He will throw you into a situation where you are the scandal of the town. Don’t be the scandal of the town. Be careful. If you expose others, Allah (swt) might throw you into that. Why? Because it is said:

الجزاء من جنس العمل

Al-jaza’u min jinsi ‘l-`amal.

“Your compensation is from the kind of deed you have done.” You have to know that. I will mention something that is a bit sensitive but don’t take it wrong. That is what Awliyaullah have narrated, al-jaz’u min jinsi ‘l-amal. You will get the compensation for the same kind of deed you have done.

There was a couple, a very pious woman and her jeweler husband. A man came to their home and used to go to the well outside of town, fill up water, and sell it to the houses. One day he came to that house after a very long time. He gave the bucket of water to that pious woman and squeezed her hand. She didn’t say anything, closed the door and went inside.

When her husband came, she asked, “What did you do today?”

He said, “I was selling jewelry.”

She said, “No, what did you do today?”

He said, “A woman came to my shop and she wanted a bracelet, so I put the bracelet on and I touched the bracelet a little bit more. I squeezed.”

If you squeezed a foreign (non-mahrim) lady’s hand or wrist or whatever it is, Allah (swt) will assign a man to squeeze your woman’s wrist, so be careful. That’s why there is separation, divorce, and cheating in other towns because the man and/or woman are doing something wrong and getting the same in return. You will be given a taste from what you have given.

When I read that, I said, “SubhaanAllah.” Allah (swt) said the truth. That is also in Surah al-Yaseen: “You will be given what you have done. You will taste the same.” If a calamity happens to you, think, “What did I do?” Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, if a donkey is carrying your load and serving you and going the way you want to go, do you hit it with a stick, or only when it goes the wrong way? If it’s going the right way, why do you need a stick? He said, if you start going the wrong way, a stick will come to correct you and then you will say, “Yaa Rabbee! Astaghfirullahi ‘l-`Azheem.”

Allah (swt) is Al-Ghafar. He will conceal that sin as if it never happened. That’s how powerful His Maghfirah is. That is for us; for Awliyaullah it’s even more.

It is said that Sayyidina Sulayman (a) was traveling on his carpet, carried by the wind. He glanced at his mulku, what was under him one time. His eyes wavered to his mulk, instead of keeping his eyes towards Allah’s `Arsh. What happened? It is said that the rug tilted, so Sayyidina Sulayman ordered the wind, `istawee, “Be straight. What are you doing?” It said, `istawee anta, “You be straight.”

That wind was given to Sayyidina Sulayman (a) by the Order of Allah (swt) because it’s the soldier of Allah (swt). The loyalty of the soldiers of Allah (swt) is only for Allah (swt), no one else. If you are with Allah (swt), they are with you. The minute you curve or bend, they leave you. It said, `istawee anta, “You straighten up. You have looked and liked what you have. The love of other than Allah (swt) entered your heart.”

For Awliya and Anbiyaullah, it’s stricter and more difficult. Right away he corrected himself. Don’t look at dunya. Waliyullah does not look at dunya. Nabiyullah does not look at dunya: his eyes are on `Arsh. I read the story that Allah (swt) showed the angel, Sayyidina Ma’roof, and after he passed away, his eyes were continuously towards the `Arsh, not looking at anything else. Allah (swt) said, “My servant never wanted anything but Me. His exclusive reward is to see only My Beauty forever.”

If you want something else, you will get that, but if you only want Allah (swt), you will get that. When Sayyidina Abu Yazid al-Bistami entered his grave—I am saying this from the kalam of Awliyaullah as believe they see what we cannot—His grave was turned into a paradise and all the inhabitants and creatures of Jannah entered, but he did not look at any of them. His eyes remained focused on the `Arsh, nothing else, not to any delight, not to any pleasure. His pleasure was to look upon the Noor of Allah (swt) coming down, `Ar-Rahman `alaa al-`Arshi ‘s-stawa.

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ

Allah Most Gracious is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority). (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:5)

Noor is coming upon `Arsh from the Divine Presence. It is Siffatu ‘r-Rahman, not Himself. It’s His Siffah, Noor of His Rahmah is coming down. Awliyaullah are only interested in Siffatu ‘r-Rahman coming down on `Arsh, in that Beauty, nothing else.

Straighten up, O insaan! Conceal the faults of others. Leave them. Allah (swt) is their Lord.

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا

And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], over them as a guardian over them. (Suratu’l-Israa, 17:54)

Rasoolullah (s) was taught, “We did not send you to them to take care of their affairs.” Allah (swt) is Al-Wakeel. Wa Huwa `alaa kulli shay’in Wakeel.

ٱللَّهُ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَكِيلٌ

Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Guardian and Disposer of all affairs. (Surat az-Zumar, 39:62)

He takes care of His servants, so you leave them. Allah (swt) might guide them and you might go astray. It happens. People think that they are mu'min forever, no. A small test might come and you might get confused and drunk and follow the wrong path. It’s very easy. Always be respectful of others and say, “Yaa Rabbee! Keep me on iman.”

Inshaa-Allah, we will finish here. I don’t want to take too much time. I heard a story from my teacher that Sayyidina Jalaluddin Rumi was walking in an alley in his town with his disciples. From across came a priest from Ahlu ‘l-Kitaab who knew Sayyidina Jalaluddin Rumi. He showed respect. Sayyidina Jalaluddin Rumi also showed respect. Awliyaullah are respectful of all Allah’s Creation.

They said, “Yaa Sayyidee, he is kaafir.” Some people right away will say, “You are not Muslim, you are kaafir.” Leave that.

They said, “Yaa Sayyidee, he’s not Muslim. He’s from another faith. Why do you show more respect to him?”

He said, “O my students, I noticed the One that is with him.”

Who is with everyone? Wa Huma ma`akum ayna maa kuntum.

He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and is moreover firmly established on the Throne (of Authority). He knows what enters within the earth and what comes forth out of it, what comes down from heaven and what mounts up to it. And He is with you wherever you may be. And Allah sees well all that you do. (Surat al-Hadid, 57:4)

“He is with you wherever you go.” Who is “you,” only Muslims? He didn’t say, wa Huwa ma` al-muslimeen ayna maa kaanoo. He said, Wa Huwa ma`akum ayna maa kuntum, “He is with you.” He said, “I noticed the One that he is with, so I looked at that One. I respected His servant because that servant belongs to Allah (swt).”

You learn adab from Awliyaullah. If Muslims just followed a few words that Awliyaullah have said, all problems will be solved. But there’s no following. What they follow is the path of Shaytan, to kill, destroy, burn, insult, maim, defame—all the beautiful things they ignore and they do the bad things.

Be a concealer of others’ faults. Be a forgiver and pardoner of others and Allah (swt) will pardon you. Know that you will receive what you have done.

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُۥ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُۥ

Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. (Surat az-Zalzalah, 99:7-8)

You will see the good. If you have done bad, you will get a taste of that badness. Why? So you can repent, because Allah (swt) doesn’t want you to go to Jahannam. Awliyaullah have said, He only created Jahannam as a whip. Everytime the donkey does the wrong thing, what do you do? Every time a mu'min does the wrong thing, does Allah (swt) say, “I have Jahannam for you”? For the ones that need the stick, there’s a stick, but the mu'min is not afraid of Jahannam. He does not want Jannah. The mu'min wants to look at `Arshu ‘r-Rahman, to see the Noor of Ar-Rahman coming down on `Arsh as Awliyaullah have done.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. Astaghfirullah. Astagfirullah. Astaghfirullahi ‘l-`Azheem. Yaa Rabee! Astaghfiruk Allahuma ‘l-`Azheem wa natubu `ilayk. Tawbatan nasooha.

Inshaa-Allah, Allah (swt) forgives all of our sins, conceals all of our faults and allows us to see the good in others and allows us to conceal the faults of others. That’s what you need. Nowadays you need that more than others. You don’t need to find out the differences, rather you need to find out what’s good and nourish it, and find out what’s bad and try to cover it. Yaa man azhhara ’l-jameel wa satara ‘l-qabeeh.

یَا مَنْ اَظْہَرَ الْجَمِیْلَ وَ سَتَرَ الْقَبِیْحَ،

“Allah (swt) has made the good appear and has concealed the bad or the ugly.” As He wrapped your inside with the beauty of your outside, as He wrapped your heart so others don’t know your true intentions, be the same. Always think good of others and always allow that goodness to come.

I feel this center has been put in place in the beginning to bring out the good of others. That’s why this center is open. May Allah (swt) always make this center in this town, always a beacon of light and guidance to the people of this town, inshaa-Allah. May Allah (swt) forgive all of us. It doesn’t matter what you look like. I came down the street here and I saw some people in witch outfits. Did you see that? Is there something going on in London today? I don’t know. There were six or seven adults dressed in witch capes. Still, may Allah (swt) guide them. May Allah (swt) allow them to see what’s true and what’s wrong. Even a magician can accept the truth.

What happened to the magicians of Fir`awn? They were so much into their magic that they understood what they were seeing was not magic. “This is not magic. This is something different.” What happened? Fa `ulqiyya. They were thrown on the ground. Who threw them? Qallu aamanaa bi Rabbia’l-`Alameen. “We surrender. We believe in the Lord of All.” Because Fir`awn was calling himself “rabbi ’l-`Alameen.” No, Rabbi Musa wa Haroon. They added that specification. Not the one you claim to be, no. Even the magicians accepted.

فَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدًا قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ هَـٰرُونَ وَمُوسَىٰ

So the magicians were thrown down to prostration: they said, "We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses". (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:7)

If they are into magic-- any `ilm you go into, whether it’s `ilm of baatil or `ilm of Haqq, when you go deep, you have to find the truth in that `ilm, whatever you are seeking. When the magicians of Fir`awn dug too deep into the `ilm of magic and Sayyidina Musa (a) came with a stick, they knew that his stick was not magic. It was a miracle of Rabbi ‘l-`Alameen and they accepted.

I don’t know what these magicians are doing but if they are blessed by Allah (swt)’s Favor of iman, they will come to iman. What happened to the magicians? They became shuhadaa at the end of the day. They accepted in the morning. Wa yuhsharu ‘n-naasu duhan. Syyidina Musa (a) said, “Bring all of your magicians at Duha time.” Duha is before Zhuhr. When they accepted, Fir`awn became crazy and said, “I am going to crucify all of you. I’m going to cut your legs and cut your hands.” By the end of the day, they were shuhadaa, martyrs. They said, “Do as you like. We will never go back.”

My teacher, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), has said that when they made sajdah, they saw Jannah. They became from Ahlu ‘l-Kashf. They saw. They became people of yaqeen. Yaqeen is belief with no doubt. They say “certainty.” What is certainty? “I’m certain?” What does it mean? I’m sure. When they made sajdah, Jannah was shown to them. That’s why their iman became so strong.

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

Qaalu inna illa rabbina munqaliboon.

They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. (Surat al-A`raf, 7:125)

“No problem. We are returning back to our Lord, whether today, tomorrow, next week or the next year.” They saw Jannah in that one sajdah.

That’s why you continue with iman. Don’t say, “I am not seeing anything.” Awliyaullah have said that some Awliyaullah reached what they reached over 30, 40, 50 years. Others reached in months or hours and others reached in a moment. In a moment they reached kashf. These were the magicians of Fir`awn. They reached that iman, that yaqeen in a moment. Don’t say, “I’m not seeing anything. I’m not reaching anything. What’s going on?” That moment has not come yet. That moment might be your last breath. That moment might be your last day. You never know.

As long as you leave this dunya with Kalima ‘t-Tayyiba, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadan Rasoolullah (s),” you are from Ahu ‘l-Jannah, finished. Whether you know it now or later, it doesn’t matter, as long as you are from that group. Inshaa-Allah, all of us will reach that moment that Allah (swt) will allow us to see Jannah. Because before you die, you will see your seat in Jannah or you will see your seat from Naar, wherever you’re going to. On the way out, you will see where you’re going.

Inshaa-Allah. we can reach Jannah. Inshaa-Allah, Allah (swt) will make us from the ones who are always worshiping Him, looking at Him, wanting Him, requesting Him. It is said that Allah (swt) told Aba Yazid, “Everybody is asking from Me but Aba Yazid is asking for Me.” Everybody is asking, “Can I fly so I can show people that I can fly? Can I walk on water so I can show people that I am special?” They said to Sayyidina Aba Yazid al-Bistami, “That man walks on water.” He said, “The fish does that.” They said, “That man flies.” He said, “The insect does that.” The black fly flies everywhere.” They said, “A man is here but in a second his in the east and in another second he is in the west.” He said, “Shaytan does that.”

That’s not what is important. What’s important is firmness on, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadan Rasoolullah (s).” Inshaa-Allah, we will be from them. I think it’s enough. Inshaa-Allah, when we meet tonight we can speak a little bit more from kalam al-Awliya. Alhamdulillah.

Every day I put on Airpods and listen to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q). Sometimes I read some books of his or books of others. I try to know what happened to Awliyaullah. My teacher has said that after 3 pm, leave dunya and read. When I used to work, he allowed me to work only until 3 p.m. What should I do? I have to make money after 3 p.m. Astaghfirullah. I read. Iqra.

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. (Surat al-`Alaq, 96:1)

Leave dunya. Until 3 p.m. is enough. After 3 p.m., try to do the same thing. Read. Pick up a book of any Waliyullah, any imam, any muhaddith, any good one, salih, and read what they have written. Maybe you can benefit yourself, your family and others. May Allah (swt) make us from them. Ameen, yaa Rabbi ‘l-`Alameen.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
