What Can You Take with You when You Die?

Sultan al-Awliya

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani

(Translated from Arabic)

If you are giving each one dunya, they will ask for a second one. They have greed, endless greed. There is no gratitude now, as people are never satisfied from this life. SubhaanAllah. Eventually you will leave this world and no one owns the treasures Qaroon left.

O People! Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. For human beings to say, “Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,” of all treasures on Earth and in Heaven, the highest level for human beings is to say every day forty times, “Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem.” Who says more for the sake of Allah (swt), Allah gives him more.

Dunya doesn't belong to any specific person; it says, "I am for everyone, not for just one person. What do you want to do if you own me?" For what is all this trouble? Dunya is for its people and can’t be carried from here to the Hereafter, except through the way of the good deeds of human beings; human beings go, but their good deeds remain. Whatever you sent for your Hereafter is there and whatever you left here does not belong to you. How many millions of people and kings said, "This world is mine," and they left it behind, not taking anything with them? They didn't take anything, not even kings whose riches filled this world, not even in their graves, because a grave is limited. But human beings have no reasoning nor minds.

The Prophet (s) said:

تفكر ساعة خير من عبادة سبعين سنة

Tafakkarru sa`atan khayrun min `ibaadati saba`een sannah.

To remember Allah (swt) for one hour (contemplate or meditate) is better than seventy years of worship.

What happened to people since the time of Adam (a) until now? What has become of people? They are all dust. They built castles and palaces from gold and silver, and they made ornaments of all kinds, but in the end they were taken under the ground. They have no mind! People become greedy. For what is all this greed? Allah (swt) will ask, "O My servant! What have you brought with you from dunya? Nothing! I gave you dunya to work in for your Hereafter. You didn't bring anything with you?" But people forgot their Hereafter and are working only for this life, so no goodness is reserved for them in the Next Life! Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar! SubhaanAllahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.

فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا

laa taghurrannakum al-hayaat ad-dunya.

Do not be cheated by this life on Earth. (31:33)

Dunya deceives Mankind, falsely saying, "I am yours." Dunya was for no one but it deceives them, saying, "I am yours, take me! Take! Take” Few think about the consequences. Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa billah. “Do not be cheated by this life on Earth.” Throughout history, since the beginning of time, Iskandar, known as “Alexander the Great,” was one young man who had greatness. He traveled from Macedonia to the end of the Indian borders, conquered countries and became one of the best emperors in the history of Mankind. He was a young man, subhaanAllahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.

He conquered kingdoms and defeated kings and became of the very few who ever reached that level. From India, whatever he reached I visited, because the Lord made me reach them. I went there and the people gathered around me and I addressed them about Alexander the Great at the last point he reached, then he returned back. Like waves he came breaking on shore, coming and going back, coming and going back. He returned, subhaanAllahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem, but he reached Mesopotamia, which means, “Between two rivers (Tigris and Euphrates).” He reached Baghdad, subhaanAllah, then death reached him.

He called the closest ones among his people and said, "O people! I am going towards death. Like all the world, also I am going. This sickness has reached me here, but every man has the right to write his will, and I have a will; come near to hear it from me. My will is that when I will die, you will put me in my coffin and when the people come to carry me, put my hands not like other people’s, but outside the coffin. If they ask, ‘Why did Alexander do that?’ tell them, ‘Alexander, who reached to the end of the world, from east to west, who conquered the treasures of kings, did not take anything is his hands!’”

Where are people's minds now? With the mind Allah (swt) gave him, Alexander the Great thought and addressed, and advised the servants of Allah with wisdom that willl last until the end of times, saying, "O people! Nobody takes anything with him. If anybody took anything from this world, it would have been me. Look, my hands are empty!” People don't read anymore, but this is part of our history and it is a great advice.

I was in Andalusia, Spain, and my group there took me to visit the historical remains of a castle, then a graveyard of their kings. We went down and walked. Signs read, “Be quiet,” and I thought, “What are they for? The kings buried here don't want any sound?” We followed the rule. There was a very big area and I saw forty or fifty kings and emporers in coffins of marble, which looked like bath tubs. For what to be quiet? Do they hear? We cannot disturb them. “Don't raise your voices,” because they are emperors, kings and so on. I asked, "Do they have something with them?" They didn't take anything from all the power and treasures they had, nor brought a single treasure to put on their heads. Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa billah!

Now human beings became greedy for this world to the maximum point, thinking it is for them. There is no such ownership by humans! Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadan Rasoolullah. If any king or emporer had said a good word, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadan Rasoolullah” would have benefitted them, whereas putting their entire treasures would never benefit them!

Were I to address the trees, they would answer me, but the children of Adam would not! Allah, Allah. Subhaan Allah! Tawbah yaa Rabbee, tawbah yaa Rabbee, tawbah, astaghfirullah! Grant us a mind and wisdom.

الَيْسَ مِنكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَّشِيدٌ

Alaysa minkum rajulun rasheed.

Is there not among you a single right-minded man? (Hud, 11:78)

No more! In the Holy Qur’an, Allah (swt) tells a story of a believer who is in the Pharoah’s castle, who blamed them, saying, “Are none among you a rightly-guided man?” Not a single one and now not even a half a man! Amaan yaa Rabbee! Tawbah yaa Rabbee, tawbah yaa Rabbee. O our Lord! don't leave us to our egos for a blink of an eye, or less. Yaa Rabbee, yaa Allah! Yaa Rabbee, yaa Allah! Tawbah yaa Rabbee, tawbah Allah! “Let not this worldly life deceive you!” This worldly life deceives them. Amaan yaa Rabbee!
