We Do Not Know the Unseen

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

10 September 2015 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een.

The Rights of Allah on Us and Our Rights on Him

Allah (swt) has rights on us as the Prophet (s) has mentioned and we also have rights on Him. That is something that is stunning. What kind of rights do we have on Him? That He has rights on us, everyone knows that, but that we have rights on Him, can you imagine that, yes or no? What does Allah want from us?

The Prophet (s) said: “O Mu`adh, do you what Allah’s right over His servants is?” Mu`adh said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet said: “That they worship Him and do not associate any partners with Him. Do you know what their right over Him is?” Mu`adh said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet said: “That He does not punish them.” (Bukhari)

Prophet (s) told him, “O Mu`adh! Do you know what are the rights of Allah on His servants and the rights of His servants on Him?” Of course, no one can answer that. Prophet (s) told him this because he was sending him to Yemen to call people to Islam. He said, “Yaa Mu`adh! Do you know the rights of Allah on His servants?” Mu`adh (r) said, “Allah and His Prophet know best, I don't know.” The Prophet (s) said, “To worship Him and not to associate anything with Him.” That is the right of Allah on His servants. It means to be in `ibaadah: to make sajda, to say Kalimat at-Tawheed, to accept what He ordered you to do; atee`oollah, to obey Allah (swt) in everything that He ordered you to do. That is the right of Allah on His servants.

What are the rights of human beings on Allah (swt)? Prophet (s) said to the Sahaabah (r), “Do you know what the rights of people on Allah (swt) are?” They replied, Qal Allah wa rasooluhu `alaam, “Allah and His Prophet know best.” The Prophet (s) said, “That He does not punish them.” It means that Allah is saying, “I don’t want to punish you. I am giving you that right that will save you: to worship Me, to make sajda to Me, to be happy and content with what I gave you.”

That is why the Prophet (s) explained the Hadith to Sayyida `Ayesha (a), “Yaa `Ayesha! Ask Allah (swt) not to judge you, because if He judges you He will punish you. When He judges, for sure you did something wrong that He will punish. Yaa `Ayesha! Ask Allah that He not judge you.” If Allah judges us, we will be punished. There is no way out of it. Everyone knows what kind of sins he did and if we make istighfaar Allah (swt) will forgive us. The Prophet (s) said:

من حوسب عذب

(Yaa `Ayesha!) Who will be judged will be punished for sure. (Bukhari)

Principles of Da`wah Taught by Prophet Muhammad to the Sahaabah

`AbdAllah ibn `Abbas (r) said, when the Prophet (s) sent Mu`adh ibn Jabal to Yemen, he said to him.... Look, he is teaching the Ummah to do as the Companions did by Prophet's order. He said, “I am sending you to Yemen. You are going to see people who are non-Muslim but Ahlu ‘l-Kitaab, People of the Book, they might be Christians or Jews. First you call them.” Innaka taqdim `alaa qawmin min ahl al-kitab fa awwal an yuwahhid Allah. “First you ask them to make Tawheed to Allah (swt), to believe and to say, ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,’ and nothing else.” Fa idhaa `arafoo dhaalik fa akhbirahum anna Allah farada `alayhim khamsa salawaat, “When they know that and they become strong in the belief that Allah (swt) is the Creator and no one can be associated with Him.”

He did not say to them, “If they don't say ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,’ cut their necks.” He said, “When they believe and know that Allah is The Creator, then teach them the five prayers.” He did not say, “Either say ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,’ or I will kill you,” as is happening today. No, he said to him, “Let them know, accept and believe that there is no creator except Allah, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah.” It means, take your time, don't rush to a conclusion until they believe that. At that time tell them about the five prayers.

There are two issues here: he did not order them to do the five prayers at the beginning and he gave them a long time to wait and think if they are going to accept or not. Even if they do not accept to say “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” you have no right to touch them, because he (s) said, “If they learn that there is no creator but Allah,” at that time, it might take one month, it might take six months (...).”

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said, “When Mu`adh ibn Jabal went to Yemen, the Prophet (s) ordered him to be lenient with the people there, as they were Ahlu ‘l-Kitaab, People of the Book, ‘Be very lenient with them.’” So what did he do when he went? He put his tents outside the city, he did not go inside the city with his army. He could have gone inside with the people who were with him, but he didn’t as he didn’t want to show them power. The Prophet (s) told him, “Show them leniency because they have lenient hearts.” It’s not like us today, we have cruel hearts. Look at what they are doing, killing, and no one is saying anything and now because of that young boy who recently died [Syrian toddler fleeing war drowned and his tiny body washed up on the shore of Turkey] , everyone is saying, “I will take immigrants.” Why didn’t you take the immigrants before? Why didn’t you stop the war before?

They said, “We will take immigrants,” but they didn’t say, “We will stop the war.” Stop the cause of reaching to that extent of immigrants.

The Prophet (s) said, “Be lenient.” They put their tents outside the city and when Fajr came they prayed in jama`ah, when Zhuhr came they prayed in jama`ah, when `Asr came they prayed in jama`ah, Maghrib and `Isha came, and they prayed in jama`ah. They didn't say anything to them, but as time passed the people of Yemen began to feel that there was something different there. They began to feel that love and spirituality, so they came to Mu`adh ibn Jabal and asked him, “What is that?”

He said, “That is to say, ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah’ and make prostration to Him, to worship Him.”

The head of the tribe said, “We like it, can we do the same as you?”

Of course, that is what he was waiting for. They began to imitate them and say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah.” Grandshaykh (q) said, “It took a long time to teach them Shahaadah, salaat, Zakaat, sawm and Hajj.” It took him a long time to teach them, and all with leniency, not with power. “Tell them, yaa Mu`adh, when they accept Tawheed, the Shahaadah, ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,’ tell them that Allah has ordered them to pray five prayers in a day and night.”

We Do Not Know the Unseen; Don’t Build Your Knowledge on Nonsense

Allah (swt) is saying to the Prophet (s) about the Unseen. We must not try to say that we know the Unseen. We don't build Islam on some imaginations or on what one president mentioned about what is going to happen in September. Islam is what the Prophet (s) has told us.I never heard Grandshaykh (q) or Mawlana Shaykh (q) speak about something that would happen in the future outside the Hadith or Holy Qur'an, it is all built on Hadith and the Holy Qur'an. I never saw something in Hadith that says, “In September there is going to be something.” Did you see something like that? Those who claim something is going to happen in September, let them at least pronounce the names of the months in Arabic! How can you know what is going to be in the future when you don’t base your assumptions on the Ahadeeth of the Prophet (s) or on the Holy Qur'an?

Verily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). It is He Who sends down rain, and He Who knows what is in the wombs; nor does anyone know what it is that he will earn tomorrow; nor does anyone know in what land he is to die. Verily, with Allah is full knowledge and He is Acquainted (with all things). (Surat Luqman: 31:34)

Allah said, “Only Allah has knowledge of when things will happen and the Signs of the Last Days.” He didn’t give that knowledge to anyone, “And He knows what is in the wombs and He knows when someone is going to die.” You don’t know when you are going to die! How do you claim something when you don’t even know about the smallest things? The Prophet (s) built Islam on a strong foundation, so what Grandshaykh (q), Mawlana Shaykh (q), and scholars say is built on Islam, the Sunnah and the Qur’an. They spoke about Mahdi (a): Mahdi exists, he is mentioned in Hadith, Sayyidina `Isa (a) is mentioned in Hadith, all the events that are going to happen in the future are taken from the Hadith of the Prophet (s).

The Hour will not appear until two great groups fight each other and there be a great battle between them, but their claim is one. (Bukhari)

That is a strong Hadith of the Signs of the Last Days: the time of the Last Days and the Day of Resurrection will not come until something happens before it. There will be a great confusion that leads to a war. Two huge groups of people will fight with each other. There will be a big war between them and within that war Sayyidina Mahdi (a) and Sayyidina `Isa (a) will appear. We believe that, yes, it is in Hadith! No one can say it’s not there, but to build your assumptions based on Physics and planets... Allah can move the wind the way He likes, right and left! Just today they were showing a bridge in Japan that was pushed down by a river, not an ocean, which they said was bigger than a tsunami. The houses were moving with the river, being pulled from their foundations and swimming and you only saw their roofs! When Allah wants, He wants! We are Muslim, alhamdulillah, we build our knowledge and assumptions on the Hadith of the Prophet (s)!

The Five Keys of the Unseen

`AbdAllah ibn Sayyidina `Umar (r) said the Prophet (s) said:

مفاتيح الغيب خمس لا يعلمها إلا الله: لا يعلم ما في غد إلا الله ولا يعلم ما تغيض الأرحام إلا الله ولا يعلم متى يأتي المطر إلا الله ولا تدري نفس بأي أرض تموت ولا يعلم متى تقوم الساعة إلا الله

The keys to the Unseen are five and none know them except Allah: none but Allah knows what will happen tomorrow; none but Allah knows what is in the wombs; none but Allah knows when the rain will come; none but Allah knows in which land a soul will die; and, none but Allah knows when the Hour will appear. (Bukhari)

When you want to speak about the Unseen, we know from this there are five keys. I am sorry to say that people today build their knowledge on what comes to their imagination, not on Hadith of the Prophet (s), because, do you know why? When they call themselves ‘Sufis’, and that is why Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said in last days of his life, “There are no ‘Sufis’, there is no ‘Tariqah’. we believe in Shari`ah!” All of Mawlana's actions are built on Shari`ah. When you build on what you don't know, you begin to use words of [famous non-Muslim speakers] and say, “This is Sufism.” You bring some sophisticated words from Psychology and the people say, “Oh, this is a PhD, a professor of Psychology and he knows best.” The Prophet (s) is saying there are five keys of the Unseen, that means five knowledges that you can reach that will lead you to understand there is an Unseen. He said they are five and no one knows them except Allah, laa ya`lamahum illa-Llah, but if Allah (swt) wants to throw in the heart of His Prophet, Allah did that! Allah gave to the Prophet (s) and the Prophet (s) gave to Allah's servants to understand, and that is why they published books based on Hadith and Holy Qur'an on these issues. “Verily, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone).”

With Allah are the Keys of the Unseen, the time of the Last Day, and He sends the rain, and what is in the wombs, and you don't know what you will get tomorrow and no one knows where they are going to die. It means rain of knowledge, “And what is in the wombs,” they say today we know but they don't know when the soul enters the wombs and that is part of that knowledge; “and you don't know what you will get tomorrow,” don't say tomorrow this and this and this will happen or you are entering into hidden shirk and then you tell people something and they believe you and adjust their business according to what you told them and then it does not happen, and then you end up in position of confusion; “and no one knows where they are going to die.” A small example is `Abdul-Wahid, may Allah bless his soul. He was from Chicago, he came here and died here, he never knew he would die here.

Allah said, “The Keys of the Unseen are five,” and first is that Allah created what is in womb, He created that child, and no one knows what is going to happen except Allah. Did you expect refugees would flee from one country to another by walking? No one ever thought about that, but it happened! “No one knows when the rain will come,” it comes suddenly and no one knows where they will die and no one knows when the Day of Judgment comes. That is narrated by Bukhari. Let us be frank, and say “astaghfirullah” if we said something that belongs to Allah Alone, as that is shirk. Only Allah knows what is going to happen. When you claim to know it, that is shirk, if you say you know the rain is coming that is shirk. When you claim to know what is coming boy or girl then that is shirk. ... there is nothing inside. do you know that lady is going to have boy or girl? Allah knows, but they don't know. They know by ultrasound, but Allah sends the soul and knows what He sends, what He created, male or female. So be sure not to transgress the limits by claiming you know, because you don't know anything.

May Allah forgive us and may Allah bless us.

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
