When a coup d'état happened in Turkey, the entire country closed down: roads, airports, other ports of entry; the president, parliamentarians, and MPs changed. People had thousands of plans. “Where am I going first? What's the next road and then the next?” Plans preoccupied presidents, prime ministers, ministers, MPs, regular citizens, everybody!
Bi fikrihi alfu mashru’oo wa lakinahu ta`atal.
“In their heads they had thousands of plans and projects, all that they wanted to do, and all were voided.”
Look how Awliyaullah take clues from what’s happening externally. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (qaddas Allahu sirrahu) said it’s the same thing with human beings who have millions of projects: dunya projects constantly change. Every day a new project is launched that brings a new problem, concern, idea, and plan of action. In hundreds of years they do not finish, and they never pay attention to Allah (swt).
People who are busy with this world have no time for Allah. Maybe for an hour on Friday we come to Friday prayer. When the prayer is finished we say salam or make du`a, and run out of the masjid. When I’m making du`a, I see half the jama`ah is empty, they’re gone. Four rows become two rows: the people who came for prayer could not wait ten or fifteen minutes for tasbeeh.
Allah (swt) promised that if you read Ayatu ‘l-Kursi after each prayer, you will go to Jannah, and with recitation of “SubhaanAllah w’alhamdulillah w’Allahu Akbar,” Allah (swt) forgives all your sins. He promised He would accept your du`a after each prayer, but they run! That is the Muslims. I don’t know what people of other faiths do. That’s what we give to Allah.
What are we busy with? Projects. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) is saying that nowadays people are busy with this world, they don't even give a few hours a day for their Lord. If a coup d'état, war, death, or a catastrophe happens tomorrow, all these projects of yours are out the window. You have to be ready to be in Allah's service as soon as you can. May Allah (swt) make us from them.
They only know the outer surface of this world’s life, whereas they are utterly unaware of the ultimate things. [Surah ar-Rum, 30:7]
Allah (swt) describes our situation now: “They only know the external, physical life, but they are the unknown, spiritual life. They are heedless of the life to come, unaware.”
In His holy books, Allah (swt) described the situation of human beings from Pre-Eternity. They only know the lower physical world and they have forgotten about the upper worlds where they will go when they pass away.
Why are we unaware, heedless of Akhirah? Because we are not looking with the Light of imaan, the nazhar roohani, spiritual gaze. Then you can see what’s in spiritual realms, in Heavens. We are looking with our five physical senses, but we also have five spiritual senses from `Alam al-Malakoot, the spiritual world: our mind, heart, sirr (secret), ruh (spirit), and khafaa (the most hidden).
You don’t see them. Where is your mind? They say it’s somewhere in the brain, but where is that energy and light? You see the brain, but not it's spiritual power. We don't see our spiritual heart, Sirr, secret station, or ruh, soul. We only look with the five physical senses and we are unaware of `Alam al-Malakoot. That’s what malaa’ikah (angels), Anbiyaullah (prophets) and Awliyaullah (saints) see.
And thus We gave Abraham [his first] insight into [Allah's] mighty dominion over the Heavens and the Earth, and [this] to the end that he might become one of those who are inwardly sure. [Surah al-An`am, 6:75]
How can you see Heavens, with which eye? You see the sky with stars. Is that the only thing up in Heavens? He said samaawaati, “Heavens, skies.” How many?
Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) is Khalilullah, beloved, intimate friend of Allah (swt). “I can show him the spiritual realms in Heavens and on Earth.” On Earth there are also spiritual realms. In Surat al-`Araf, asta`eedhu billah.
Didn’t they look in the spiritual realms of Heavens?
Have they never considered [Allah's] mighty dominion over the Heavens and the Earth and all the things that Allah created. [Surah al-A`raf, 7:1]
There are some who can look with that gaze, nazhar, the power of the spiritual soul to the spiritual realms. We look with the physical gaze. We don’t see anything, but there are some who can see. For them the ghayb, unknown worlds, are not unknown, they are seen. What you see is in front of you. What you don’t see is ghayb. Awliyaullah and Anbiyaullah see ghayb. It is in front of them.
That’s why we have to find somebody who has that nazhar ar-roohani, the spiritual gaze, because as he will take you from seeing only this world with your physical senses to seeing the spiritual world with your spiritual senses. How do you do that? Allah (swt) mentioned it in Surat al-Baqarah. Why did He mention the cow? He said when somebody from the Jewish nation was killed, they asked Moses (a) about the killer. Moses (a) said, “Slaughter a cow.”
For you to break out of these physical senses you have to slaughter your ego, your cow that grazes, eats and drinks, mates, and consumed by its pleasures and desires. When you cut off from your physical senses you can see with your spiritual senses. That’s what they call at-Tarbiya, upbringing. Awliyaullah will take you from `Alam al-Mulk, this world that you look upon with the physical senses, to the spiritual world that you start seeing with your spiritual senses, with the noor of `aql, the noor of qalb, the noor of ruh that Allah (swt) put inside us.
We have a physical body in this world and we have ruh from Malakoot, the other world. You have inside of you the secret, sirr. That sirr is where Allah’s Noor comes down.
Allah is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth. The parable of His light is a niche containing a lamp. The lamp is [enclosed] in glass, the glass [shining] like a radiant star: [a lamp] lit from a blessed tree, an olive-tree that is neither of the east nor the west, the oil whereof [is so bright that it] would give light [of itself] even though fire had not touched it. (It is) light upon light! Allah guides he that wills [to be guided] to His Light, and [to this end] Allah offers parables to men, as, He [alone] has full knowledge of all things. [Surat an-Noor, 24:35]
That ayah, Ayatu 'n-Noor, explains to those who understand that the Light of Allah (swt) comes down. With tarbiyya, Awliyaullah bring you from this physical world up to the spiritual world. You use your senses. When you reach the spiritual world, you have to follow Rasoolullah (s) and his light, then he will take you from the spiritual world which is unknown to you now, to the Unknown Unknown, which is the Presence of Allah (swt), the Divine Presence. You will see Allah (swt) by His Light, not by yourself. Allah (swt) will dress you from His Light so that you can see Him and hear Him, but not with your spiritual eyes or ears. Allah will give you from His Sight to see Him and from His, Hearing to hear Him! That is only by the secret of following Rasoolullah (s).
The shaykh will give you tarbiyya. Slaughter your cow that grazes and follows its pleasures. Once you cut yourself off from the physical senses—khalwah—you barely eat, drink, sleep, or see your wife from forty days to six months. Grandshaykh AbdAllah (q) made khalwah for five years. They can make it. Try to be like them!
The shaykh takes you up by cutting you off from your ego. Rasoolullah (s) takes you from your ruh to your sirr. That’s when you see Allah’s Lights of Jalaal and Jamaal, and you become Khalifatu ‘l-Haqq, His representative who is aware of ghayb and shahadah. You become `alimu ‘l-ghaybi wa ‘s-shahadah, the knower of the Unknown and the Known, as Awliyaullah are.
Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said to stop dreaming about your projects, quit your millions of plans for the future, and immerse yourself in the Dhikr of Allah (swt). Get yourself to follow a genuine Waliyullah, not an imposter! Don’t follow just anyone. Don’t follow somebody who prevents you from following the Order of Allah (swt).
Say: 'O followers of earlier revelation! Come to that tenet which We and you hold in common: that we shall worship none but Allah, and not ascribe divinity to anyone other than Him, and we shall not take human beings for our lords beside Allah.' And if they turn away, then say: 'Bear witness that it is we who have surrendered ourselves to Him.' [Surah Aali-`Imran, 3:64]
Say to the “People of the Book.” So many `alims and imams and shuyookh and qutbs claim they know the book, al-kitaab. The people who have looked into the book come to a word that we both share, we both understand that we only worship the Creator and don’t associate anyone with Him and don’t take lords other than Him. A lord orders you and forbids you.
So many leaders nowadays say, “I ordered you to do it, so you have permission. If I didn’t order you to do it, you don’t have permission.” They act like gods. Did Allah (swt) permit Dhikr or not? Fadhkuroonee. He’s ordering you, “Remember Me.” Adhkurkum. “All of you remember Me.” If somebody goes to a place to make Dhikr with people and you said, “I did not give permission,” you are interfering with Allah’s order. You have to be careful. Don’t follow fake ones, those who don’t understand. Follow Awliyaullah, who never forbid what Allah (swt) ordered. Fadhkuroonee adhkurkum, "Remember Me, I remember you."
Warka`oo ma` ar-raki`een. Allah (swt) said, “Pray with those who are praying,” in jama`ah. “I’m going to pray with people,” and that one says, “I did not give you permission.” Understand the gravity of what people do. They don’t know. A Waliyullah cannot interfere with what Allah (swt) orders or forbids.
Some of them say, “Let’s do this,” and you say, “But this is haraam.”
“No, I am the shaykh. I know better than you. We should do this.”
They start with Khidr (a) saying, “He did this. He did that. You don’t understand. The shaykh understands.”
No! This Way is tied up by Qur’an and Sunnah. If it’s something against the Qur’an, you don’t do it, even if you think he is the qutb of the time. You don’t do something that’s against the Qur'an. It’s not up to you. Until you understand from Allah (swt), from Rasoolullah (s), or from Waliyullah, until they tell you what is going on, you don’t do something that is against Qur’an. This is our level, the level of low ones. They might know something, but you have to be careful. Don’t come contrary to Qur’an and the zhaahir, its outer meaning.
Awliyaullah see ghayb. The claimants don’t see. They don’t know anything. May Allah (swt) make us follow Awliyaullah, as they take you from physical senses to spiritual senses. You quit using your physical senses. Do you know what Grandshaykh (q) used to do in khalwah? He used to board up all the windows. Why? So he could not see and use the physical sense of sight. For As-habu ‘l-Kahf, “I shielded their ears.” They cannot hear anything anymore.
Physical senses have to be out. If you want to elevate to spiritual levels, you have to cut yourself off from physical senses. Shuyookh teach you that, no more use of physical senses. It’s finished. Who do you talk to in khalwah? Do you have iPhones in khalwah? Do you allow that? That would be great. Khalwah would pass very quickly. With your iPhone and Snapchat and Whatsapp, “Oh, khalwah is easy, I like it. Maybe I can stay for six months, not forty days.”
No talking, no seeing. You don’t even know if it’s day or night. That’s why he boarded up the windows: no hearing, no physical senses, no touching. You’re by yourself. What are you going to touch, the walls? Touch the walls. What else? These are the senses. The shaykh brings you up to the five spiritual senses: `aql, qalb, sirr, ruh, khafaa. You start using these to see and follow the Light of Rasoolullah (s).
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me.” [Surah Yusuf 12:108]
“I am in full view,” not in the darkness. He is seeing by the Light of Allah (swt), so when you are following him (s), he is taking you to `Alamu ‘l-Malakoot, the spiritual world, and elevates you to `Alamu ‘l-Jabaroot, and from there to `Alamu ‘l-Lahoot, until yourself becomes void. That is Fana an-Nafs. You become out of yourself, you’re not there anymore. This is something very hard for the mind to understand, but Awliyaullah teach it. You are absent from yourself and only present by Him. That is the ultimate level, the Sirru ‘l-Mutaba`a, Secret of Following.
O the people who claim! Where are the meanings? Where are the ma`arif? Where is the Divine knowledge?
They claim, but where is the true meaning of their claim? O the ones who claim to know the real knowledge of Heavens! Where is your love to Allah (swt)? Wa yaa arbaabal-mahabba ayn at-ta`ah. O people who claim to be lovers of Allah (swt)! Where is your obedience to Him?
That is why a shaykh cannot disobey Allah. In his zhaahir, a shaykh has to be perfect according to Shari`ah: they cannot see any deviation from that.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Who sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. [Surat al-Kahf, 18:1]
`Abd has no crookedness: `abd is straight on the Siratu ‘l-Mustaqeem. A true shaykh cannot tell you this and that. That’s what we need to find. If you claim to know, where is the true knowledge? If you claim to have true knowledge, where is your love for Allah (swt)? If you claim to love Allah (swt), where is your obedience to Him?
May Allah (swt) make us from the obedient. It is said to be impossible for the servant to know Allah (swt) and not love Him.
Some say, “I have a girlfriend and the more I know her, the more I love her.” “I have a boyfriend. I need to know him more because the more I know him, the more I love him.”
I’m just giving you an example because that’s what you understand. We are all cows and bulls, after grazing and mating and eating and drinking. What do they say, “wine and dine”? That’s what you want to do. I’m talking from your language. It’s okay. We can talk from the language of people who can understand.
It is impossible for the servant to know Allah (swt) and not love Him. What He is giving you is enough for you to love Him. If somebody gives you a gift, it increases closeness. Hadiya, gifts make people come together. When you know what Allah (swt) has given you, you love Him more, then it’s impossible not to mention Him.
When you love somebody, you mention them. Isn’t that true? When you love somebody, they are on your mind. Where is your Dhikrullah then? People escape from Dhikrullah. “We love Allah.” Where is your Dhikrullah, your mention and remembrance of Allah (swt)? It is impossible to mention Him and not find the sweet taste of Dhikrullah. Those who mention Allah (swt) and remember His Holy Names find a sweetness, that’s why they want to do it more. It’s impossible when you find that sweetness of Dhikrullah not to be busy with it.
If you found the sweetness of Dhikrullah, you immerse yourself more with Allah, you are with Him more. When you know Him, you love Him. When you love Him, you mention Him. When you mention Him, you find the sweetness. When you find the sweetness, you want more.
How many times do you make Dhikrullah? Once a month. It’s not about being busy with dunya, it’s about being busy with Mawla, Allah (swt). Make your choice, O insaan!
Even if you love and are busy with this world, how much money are you going to make, more than Qaroon? Seventy camels carried the keys of his treasures! Did he benefit from them? Did they save him from anything? He became the enemy of his cousin Prophet Moses (a) and the enemy of Allah. The one who amassed the wealth of this world—like many rich ones—became the enemy of Allah. They use their money against what He ordered. So many of them spend their money in the way of evil and are happy and proud of it.
Don’t be on that side, busy with dunya; it's not going to benefit you. Find the sweetness of Dhikrullah and be busy with it under the supervision of a true Shaykh that orders what Allah (swt) ordered and forbids what He forbids.
May Allah (swt) forgive us and make us with Awliyaullah, at the feet of Habeebullah (s), where Roohullah, Kalimullah, Khalilullah, Najiullah, Safiullah and all Anbiya are sitting! He is the Sultan and Imam of Anbiya and malaa'ikah. He prayed Witr in the Seventh Heaven with malaa'ikah and he prayed two raka`ats with all Anbiya. He was the imam of Anbiya on Earth and of malaa'ikah in Heavens.
Understand the value of your Prophet (s). Allahumma salli wa sallim wa baarik `alayh. Inshaa-Allah, we follow him correctly.
Slaughter that cow, which is the fat ego we have that only wants is the pleasures of this life. May Allah (swt) forgive us and allow us to use our spiritual senses, inshaa-Allah.
Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, wa bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
