Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque and Institute (ASIM)
[Du`a of Khutbah.]
O Believers, Mu’min, Muslims! Allah (swt) created us and He said:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ
I have only created jinn and men so that they may worship Me. No sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me. (Surat adh-Dhariyat, 51:56-57)
“I am The One Who gives them sustenance so I want from them to worship Me.” The best worship that we can do in our lives is what Prophet (s) has taught us and he mentioned it in many places. Allah said in Holy Qur’an worship is equal to:
وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا
Take what Prophet ordered and cease from whatever he forbade. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)
Whatever Prophet (s) gives to you, you take it without question - but Shaytan plays with us. Shaytan always comes in our ears saying, “Why are you doing this? Why are you doing that? It’s not appropriate for your pride. You are someone who has to be famous.” So people lose their love to Allah (swt) and begin to love the dunya, doing what suits them in dunya.
Prophet (s) said, “I came to build up your Akhirah. I did not come to build your dunya. I came with Allah’s Message in order to perfect you, to make you a better Muslim, a better mu’min, a better human being with good manners and good behaviours, to take from your heart all kinds of pride, hate, jealousy and all of the bad characteristics that we know.”
Prophet (s) was under that load of carrying the Ummah on his shoulders and carrying their sins on his shoulders. He said, “Yaa Rabbee! Help me.” Allah invited him because he asked Allah (swt) directly, Allah invited him to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa to clarify to him, “You are supported wherever you direct your face.”
Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah, for Allah is Omnipotent, All-Knowing. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:115)
It means anyone who goes for sajda will surely find Allah (swt) present for him, waiting for him to come and the best that Allah gave to Ummat an-Nabi (s) is prayers because when you are praying, you are bayna yaday ar-Rahman, “Between the Hands of Allah (swt).” How do you know if your prayer is accepted or not? If you have too much gossip in your ears when you enter into your prayers, make sure that you try to eliminate them because they destroy your prayer. Prayer has to always be perfect.
One time Prophet (s) took Sahaabah (r) to Mount Uhud to give them a lesson, to guide them to the right way, to face Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s), not dunya; he (s) stood by the Mt. Uhud at was Ishraaq time, the sun was rising. He (s) told them, “Give your back to the sun,” and then they saw their shadows in front of them. Prophet (s) said, “If anyone can catch his shadow, I will give him my jubba, cloak.” Who doesn’t want the cloak of Prophet (s)? Everyone is rushing to get it! They began to run by the order of Prophet (s), they didn’t use their minds, thinking, “How can we catch our shadows?” It’s impossible, but they used their love to Prophet (s).
Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)
They took it without any doubt and they ran after their shadows to catch them but they were not able to catch them, and they kept running until finally they reached the mountain. The shadow came on the mountain and then they were able to put their hands on it. The Prophet (s) then said, “Turn away from the mountain to look at me and come back to me.” When they faced Prophet (s) and faced the sun, the shadow was behind their backs and they were running, running, running and the shadow was running behind them until they arrived to Prophet (s). Prophet (s) said, “If you are running for dunya you will never catch it. If you are running for Akhirah, towards me and to Allah (swt), you will be in the Divine Presence.” Prophet (s) wants innocence for his (s) Ummah, as Allah said:
كُنتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّهِ
You were the best of Nations evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)
We are calling for goodness as Prophet (s) taught us to call for goodness, not to call for fighting. With his du`a, Prophet (s) was asking, “Yaa Rabbee! Give me something for my Ummah,” and Allah give him something precious. Allah gave every prophet something and to Sayyidina Muhammad (s) Allah gave a very precious principle and ritual in Islam, a very precious diamond: Ramadan.
I brought my Ummah five things in the month of Ramadan no prophet before me was given: the first is that on the first night of the month of Ramadan Allah (swt) looks at them, and whoever Allah looks at He never punishes; the second is that the smell of their mouths in the evening has a nicer scent to Allah than musk; the third is that the angels ask for forgiveness on their behalf all day and night; the fourth is that Allah (swt) commands His Paradise saying to her, “Be ready and beautify yourself for My servants, they are about to relax from the fatigue of the dunya in My Abode and My Generosity;” the fifth is that on the last night He forgives all of them, and a man amongst the people says, “Is this the Night of Power?” He says, “No, do you not see that when workers work and finish their jobs their payment is fulfilled?” (Bayhaqi)
“Allah (swt) gave me something very precious for my Ummah, which is Ramadan.
The first (ten days) of the month of Ramadan is mercy, the second (ten days) is forgiveness and the last (ten days) is salvation from the Fire. (Bayhaqi)
Allah Gave Us Five Principles in Ramadan
Qaala Rasoolullahi (s): u’tiyat ummatee fee shahri Ramadan khamsan, “Allah gave my Ummah five things in shahr Ramadan for the benefit of the Ummah.” That is why if you have Ramadan the whole year it’s better, but Allah knows best; He made it one month in a year not to be very heavy on us.
Amma waahidatun fa innahu idhaa kaana awwalu laylatin min shahri Ramadan nazhar Allahu ilayhim, when the first night of Ramadan enters, Allah (swt) will look at the fasting people. What more happiness do you want than Allah looking at you? Nazhar Allahu `layhim wa man nazhar Allahu ilayhi lam yu’adhdhib-hu abadan, Allah (swt) will look at those who are fasting the first night of Ramadan and when Allah looks at anyone, Allah will never torture him, punish him or send him to Hellfire.
The first thing when Allah (swt) gave Ramadan to us, He is forgiving our sins and putting us on the right track. Wa amma ‘th-thaniyatu fa inna khuloofa afwaahihim heena yumsoona atyabu `inda ‘Llahi min reehi ‘l-misk, the smell of their mouth is better. Allah gave them better than the breath of a beautiful and precious perfume, musk, but not like the musk of the dunya from the deer. It’s the musk of Heavens. It means He will dress us with the perfumes of His Beautiful Names and Attributes. He will dress Ummat an-Nabi (s) who are fasting Ramadan. This is the second grant that Allah is granting us.
Now in dunya some people get grants to make programs and they are very happy. What do you think about a grant from Allah (swt), that He is forgiving your sins and preparing you for the Day of Judgement to be ready without any sin by fasting Ramadan?
He said, “The smell of their mouth is better than the heavenly perfumes of musk in Paradise.” What kind of smell is coming from our mouth when we are fasting? Why is it considered better than the perfumes in Heavens? It means there is a big secret when you are breathing in and breathing out in Ramadan.
To remember Allah (swt) (contemplate or meditate) for one hour is better than seventy years of worship.
In Ramadan, Allah (swt) makes your breath meditate on Him, dhikrullah, by breathing in and breathing out and it’s written for you as a big ni’mah that Allah gave to Ummat an-Nabi (s). We don’t know what kind of smell, but it is something that cannot be known except in Heavens. Allah gave us something that He didn’t give other Ummahs because Prophet (s) is the loveliest one to Allah (swt) and the Messenger of Mercy.
The third Allah (swt) gave him in Ramadan is: fa inna ‘l-malaa’ika tastaghfir lahum fee kulli yawmin wa layla, “Every day and every night Angels are asking forgiveness on behalf of the Ummah” and that istighfaar will be written for you in your notebooks when you are fasting in Ramadan. That will be given to the people who are fasting without them knowing what is going on. As they are fasting Allah is sending reward to them by Angels who are doing istighfaar or praises to Allah (swt) or salawaat on Prophet (s) and it will be written for Ummat an-Nabi `alayhi afdalu ’s-salatu wa ‘s-salaam.
The fourth one that Allah gave in Ramadan: inna ‘Llaha ya’muru jannatahu fa yaqoolu lahaa ista`idee wa tazayyanee li `ibaadee. Awshaku an yastareehu man ta`bi ‘d-dunya ila daaree wa karaamatee, “Prepare yourself, O My Paradises and decorate the Paradises because My servants are going to rest now after fasting Ramadan and they are running away from the exhaustion of dunya and coming to My Generosity and My Paradise.”
Allah (swt) is giving us a Paradise in Heavens that will be given to those who are fasting in Ramadan.
The fifth one: ama ‘l-khaamisa fa innahu idhaa kaana akhiru laylatin ghafara lahum jami`a, the last day of Ramadan, Allah (swt) will forgive all His servants from Hellfire He gives them `itqun min an-Naar, “freedom from Hellfire.” It is narrated by Ahmad aw Bazzaz wa ‘l-Bayhaqi.
Showing his level that Allah has given him in the Divine Presence, Laylat al-Israa wa 'l-Mi`raaj, Rasoolullah (s) said, ana Muhammad, “I am Muhammad. Allah gave me that name” wa Ahmad. Allah gave that name in Holy Qur’an, Wa ‘l-Faatih, The One Who Opens Things That Are Closed. He opened everything for us, Allah’s Paradises for us. Wa ‘l-Faatih wa ‘l-Qaasim, “And I am the one who distributes the sustenance by Allah’s permission to my Ummah.” Wa ‘l-Hashir wa ‘l-`Aqib wa ‘l-Maahiyy wa Taahaa wa Yaseen, “And I am the one who will be on the Day or Resurrection interceding for my Ummah and I am the who Allah (swt) will erase sins of my Ummah because of me and I am Taha and Yaseen.”
May Allah (swt) keep us under the arms and wings of Prophet (s) and give us Paradise as He gave it to Sayyidina Musa (a), Sayyidina `Isa (a), Sayyidina Ibrahim (a), Sayyidina Nuh (a), Sayyidina Adam (a) and all prophets in between and of course Sayyidu ‘r-Rusul, Sayyidina Muhammad (s), Master of Messengers.
May Allah forgive us. He (s) said:
Allah bestowed on my Ummah the Night of Power and He did not give it those before them. (Daylami)
“Allah gave me a precious night in Ramadan, more precious than anything else in dunya, more precious than the whole year, more precious than the whole Ramadan: Laylatu ‘l-Qadr.”
Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily you would have seen it humble itself and shatter for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes that We propound to men that they may reflect. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:21)
Truly We have revealed it in the Night of Power, and what will cause you to understand the Night of Power? (Surat al-Qadr, 97:1-2)
“Yaa Muhammad, We have revealed to you the Holy Qur’an and We are asking, ‘Do you know what kind of secrets are in that night?’” Observe that night. It is tonight, the 27th of Ramadan. Some of you and we hope all of us will see it, so try to pray as much as you can this night and remember Allah (swt) until Fajr time.
