This Life is to Stand Before Your Lord

Jumu`ah Khutbah

O mu`mins! O believers! May Allah (swt) keep us on Islam and iman until we meet Him in the best of shapes, the best of forms, the best of light. You have to understand that the reason for this life is for you to stand up in front of your Lord at the end. People have forgotten that. Why are you living, O human being? We’re coming to the end of the year now and there’s a report coming. The kids wait for their report card from the beginning and they get their report cards in quarters. A human being’s life is his scholastic year. You go to school to learn. This is school. Dunya is the school of Ma`rifatullah. Dunya is your school to learn about your Lord, Allah (swt). That is why you are here, O human being, nothing else. Find in that school who teaches you about your Lord, who teaches you about Allah (swt).

Who in that school teaches you that? Your politicians, your this and that? Who teaches you in that school? Rasoolullah Muhammad (s). Rasoolullah `Isa (a). Rasoolullah Musa (a). They are all Rasoolullah. They are all mursaleen. Salih Rasoolullah (a). Nuh Rasoolullah (a). All of them are Rasoolullah. They exist in this school that is called dunya, this world, this planet.

You’re trying to save the planet. Save yourself first. You are headed towards fire. “We have to save the planet from extinction. We have to save the planet from extreme heat.” You are headed that way, O human being. Think about it. Where do you go at the end? Do they put you in the highest and biggest Taj Mahal? Maybe. Maybe somebody will make a Taj Mahal for you, but even if it’s a Taj Mahal, it’s underground. You don’t understand, O insaan. You are so heedless.

We are living in this world day after day, night after night, for what? For Ma’rifatullah, to know about our Lord and to love Him more and more. How do you love Him? Worship Him. Obey Him. The more you do namaz, the happier your heart is. The more you go to Umrah and Hajj, the more your heart is happy. The more you do dhikrullah, the happier your heart is. Why? Because you are approaching your Lord. You are approaching Allah (swt), the Lord of Heavens and Earth. He is Wahid. Innama illahukum illa Wahid. “Your Lord is One.”

Say: "I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me, that your Allah is one Allah. whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and, in the worship of his Lord, admit no one as partner. (Surah al-Kahf, 18:110)

If I take a little bit of the one, what happens? It loses its identity as one. It’s simple math. O human being! If you take 1% from one, what happens? It’s not one anymore, it’s 0.99%. It’s something else. Allah (swt) cannot be divided. If you divide one, you lose that one and it becomes something else. Allah (swt) does not become something else. He is One. La yattajazza’u, cannot be divided, cannot be severed, cannot be separated, not even a millimeter. How about if we take 0.000000000001? It becomes 0.999999999, something different.

Allah (swt) is One. One is not two. It’s simple math. Two is something different. One is something different. If you take something from the one, it becomes different. Rasoolullah (s), all mursaleen, `Isa (a), Musa (a), Nuh (a), what did they say? Illaahukum Waahid. “Your Lord is One.” All of them said this. You cannot change that identity, but Shaytan comes and plays with your head, O insaan, O human being. He changes your understanding because you have followed the wrong one in that school. You have followed the wrong ones. Millions and billions of wrong ones have been deceived by Shaytan and they have become shaytans themselves. They take people away from Allah (swt).

To say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” is the best dhikr. It is the best thing you can mention by your tongue. When you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” it is the best mention of your Lord. It is the foundation of iman. If you lose that, you have gone after something else. You have achieved something else. “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” That’s why we are saying, “Yaa Rabbee, keep us on that. Keep us on iman and Islam.”

Allah (swt) and Rasoolullah (s) have said whoever says, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” Allah (swt) will admit them to Jannah. With, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” you can reach the highest of stations. You don’t need anything else. If you continue with, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” and follow what Rasoolullah (s) has brought to you, you will reach the highest stations of Jannah. Continue with, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” on your tongue. Why don’t you say it on your tongue? You only say it when you are praying.

Probably the only time they say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” is when they are making Shahadah, “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah.” Outside of that, it’s haram to sit together and say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” “It’s haram!” Why is it haram? When you remind yourself and others and whoever is listening, why is it haram? Because Shaytan doesn’t like it. Then they have followed their people and the people in that school are teaching. There are so many classes to choose from.

O insaan, know that this dunya is for you to know your Lord, Ma’rifatullah. When you know your Lord, there is Muhabbatullah. How do you know your Lord? By `ibadatullah. By `ibadah, you know Allah (swt). By knowing Allah (swt), you love Allah (swt). By Him, you love Him as Habeebullah has loved Allah (swt) and Allah (swt) has loved him. Sahaabah-i-kiram loved Allah (swt) and Allah (swt) loved them. By that way you can reach.

Know what you’re doing in this life. Shaytan has taken an oath. They don’t know what Shaytan is. They don’t know what Allah (swt) is. They don’t know what prayer and worship is. All they know is elections. All they know is the New World Order. All they know is whatever is happening here and there. Leave that for now. The world is headed towards fire. You are headed towards fire too. First save yourself and your family and then you can save your community and country. When they are heedless of Muhammad (s), when they are heedless of the teachings of `Isa (a), of Musa (a)--the true teachings. Why? Because Shaytan has changed everything.

Shaytan comes on the right. He has said he has taken an oath.

"Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left: Nor wilt thou find, in most of them, gratitude (for thy mercies)." (Surah al-A’raf, 7:17)

Thumma la-aati’annahum mim bayni aydihim wa min khalfihim. “I will come to them from their front, I will come to them from their back, I will come to them from the right. I will come to them from the left.” When he comes from the right, he changes the understanding of your deen. He knows. He has seen. He has deceived so many Muslims. He has deceived so many Christians. He has deceived so many Jews. He knows how to deceive each follower of their religion with what. He comes and overlays truth with falsehood. He mixes truth and falsehood. You think what you are doing is good because Shaytan is showing it to you in the form of a candy the way you give rats poison.

I read about rat poison because years ago we had a problem. It is a blood thinner. It makes you bleed internally but it is sugar-coated. Shaytan sugar-coats the haraam. “No, it is good. Your deen allows it. Your deen says you can do that, so you can do it.” “Great, now we’ll do it.” All they’re doing is bad actions. When you look at what they’re doing, you ask, “How can you do that?” They say, “Our religion tells us to do that.” Shaytan is telling you to do that.

Shaytan is sugar coating the truth with falsehood. That’s how he comes from the right. He says, “Your religion, your way, your Prophet has said that and it means this way, so follow what I’m telling you. I’m teaching you what your Prophet meant.” They say, “Okay, sure, we can do that. It’s not haram. Actually it’s mubah, allowed. Maybe it’s not halal or this and that but it’s allowed.” Shaytan plays with you on the right side.

The left side is upfront. “Do what you please. Do whatever you desire.” That’s how he comes from the left, no religion, no way, no Prophet, nothing, straight up. “Do you want to drink and party? Go ahead. You have a venue, go out.” Right away, upfront. Your country, your country, my country, all the countries around the world are following their desires. Whatever they feel like doing at nighttime, they go and do it. This is Shaytan coming from the left. No religion, no need to sugar-coat Haqq with falsehood.

And then he comes from the front and says, “Nobody will judge you. There’s no Qiyamah.” That is what it is nowadays, they are doing what they’re doing and not thinking, “I will stand in front of my Lord to get my report card at the end of my life. At the end of my scholastic year, after I studied all this year, at the end I will see what I have done.” He comes from the front and says, “There’s no principle. There’s no judgment. There’s no A, B, C, D, E, F. All of that is a lie. At the end of the year, they will give you a flag to wave, especially now that we’re coming to June. Wave it and go.”

He comes from the back and says, “Do you want to help a poor man? You’re going to become poorer. You’re going to help somebody in need, your cousin, your friend, your neighbor? No, no, no. If you do that, how about your children? Who’s going to take care of them? Your money is going to become less.” He comes from the back to make you feel guilty about the good things you are willing to do and then you stop doing them. Shaytan is a deceiver and con artist.

When you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” and follow the right teacher in dunya, he tells you, “Beware of that dog. Beware of that Shaytan. He’s only out there to hurt you, harm you, to bark at you.” And then what happens? You get to the end of the year as Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) has said, “Al-mawtu ash-shaddu mimma qablahu, death is harder than what has preceded it.” Death is more difficult than all that you had in your life. “Wa ahwanu mimma ba`da, it is easier than what’s coming next.” Death is harder than what you have lived and it is easier than what you are going to see. When death comes, what happens? Allah (swt) calls you. Do you believe that, O insaan? No. That’s why all messengers have come to say, “Believe in Allah (swt) and the Last Day.” Every messenger has reminded you of your Creator. He created you and you will return to Him on the Last Day. That is what is most important.

You come in front of Him on the Last Day, Yawmu ‘l-Qiyamah. What happens? You start lying. “O my Lord! No, I have not done anything wrong.” Wa maa kunna mushrikeen. “We were never idol worshippers. We have never put partners with You. We have not changed the identity of One, Al-Wahid. We have not done anything wrong. All we have done was right.”

What happens? Al-yawma nakhtimu `alaa afwaahihim.

That Day shall We set a seal on their mouths. But their hands will speak to us, and their feet bear witness, to all that they did. (Surah Yaseen, 36:65)

In Surah Yaseen you read that Allah (swt) will zip their mouths. Have you ever seen in some movies where they do this and a seal comes on their mouths? Your mouth is only used for speaking lies. “I don’t want to hear lies today.” What happens? Who’s going to say what we did? Al-yawma nakhtimu `alaa afwaahihim wa tukallimuna aydihim. Do you read that in Surah Yaseen? You read it.

That Day Allah (swt) will seal up your tongue, your mouth and everything that’s in it. What happens? Allah (swt) will make your hands speak. Allah (swt) will make your feet witness on you. When you are doing a disobedience, know that you have four witnesses looking at you. Have you ever thought about that when you are in your room by yourself? “Let’s do some stuff. Let me call some friends. Let me meet up.” Who’s witnessing what you’re doing? Your hands. You’re texting. These hands will say, “Yaa Rabbee! I was with this servant of Yours.” These two hands are witnesses either for you or against you. You have to understand. Your feet that you walk with are going to witness where you left.

Every action you do, O human being, you have four witnesses upon you, and the two witnesses up here, and of course, Allah (swt) is seeing. He doesn’t need any witnesses. He is seeing Himself. He is Shaheed. He is the Witness Himself but He has shown you that your hands and feet are with you wherever you go. If you do ma`siya, you have four shahids. If you want to convict somebody, you have to have a witness. You have four witnesses to speak against you and you will not be able to say any word. Your mouth is shut, zipped up.

What do you do on that Day? O human being that is heedless in this life, running like a wild beast in the wilderness, eating from here, eating from there, drinking here, drinking there, harming this one, harming that one, mating here and mating there. That’s what you did all your life, O insaan, until these messengers came to you to make you understand the purpose of life. The purpose of life is when you stand in front of your Lord and your Lord is happy with you, when He says, salaamun qawlam mi’r rabbi ‘r-Raheem. “Welcome, greetings, peace be upon you, you are safe. You are in My Ocean of Salam.” His name is As-Salaam. “You are with Me.”

سَلَـٰمٌ قَوْلًا مِّن رَّبٍّ رَّحِيمٍ

"Peace!" - a word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful! (Surah Yaseen, 36:58)

Are you running to that, O insaan? Only a few of us are. The majority are not. They neglected, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” When they came to this dunya, they neglected to testify and confirm, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” They neglected to follow a good teacher in the school called “dunya.” They run after Shaytan and his whispering and then when death comes around, at the end they will see themselves in front of Allah (swt) with a zipped up mouth and their own body witness against them.

What happens? May Allah (swt) forgive all of us. All of us will be in that condition. The mu`min, the believer, people like us who made mistakes cry. Why? Because they have done something wrong and are asking forgiveness. It is said on the Day of Judgment Allah (swt) will take from your own skin. Hair grows on skin. There will be an eyelash that flies and asks permission to speak in front of Allah (swt). That is for the mu`min. The unbeliever, the disobedient one never cries, but the mu`min cries if he or she has done something wrong. Allah (swt) gives the eyelash permission to speak. It will say, “Yaa Rabbee! I am also a witness.” “What did you see?” “I got wet from the tears of Your servant. When I was in his eye and he was by himself crying from what he or she had done, I got wet. I testify that he has asked forgiveness from You and he was crying out of fear of You.”Allah (swt) will say, “I have forgiven that one who has cried for Me.” It will be said, hadha `ateequ ’Llahi min an-naar, “This is the freed servant of Allah (swt) from Fire.”

That’s what we do. At the end of the day we cry if we have done something wrong. If you don’t cry then you have to make your heart cry. You have to allow yourself to have that softness in your heart to cry over what you have done wrong. This door is open for all humanity. They can all repent. Allah (swt) accepts repentance and Allah (swt) will put the one who has cried under His Throne on the Day of Judgment. Seven groups are under the Throne of Allah (swt). One of these groups are the people who cried when they were alone over what they had done wrong towards Allah (swt) and others. Allah (swt) will forgive them because of that one tear.

If you have not gotten a tear in your eye until now, work on it. If you don’t know how to tear up, get some spice. Smell some curry. You love the curry and you love all your spices. Smell it. Get tears in your eyes and say, “Yaa Rabbee! I’m sorry. I have tears in my eyes.” Inshaa-Allah, they become true tears, not fake tears. Try to repent, O insaan. Try to understand what you’re here for. You’re not here to run around in this world. You’re here for Ma`rifatullah, to know your Lord in this world, to know Allah (swt).

You have to say His Name, not only “the Lord.” “The Lord” might mean so many things. So many people are lords. Most of the English people are lords. Whenever I go to England, everybody is a lord. What is this? In Australia, lords. Here in the old times, lords. No, say “Allah (swt).” Allah (swt) has said, Hu Allah (swt). He, the Creator, is saying, “He is Allah (swt).” Qul huwa Allahu. If you don’t know His Name, His Name is Allah (swt). Allah (swt). There is no plural for Allah (swt). You can say “gods.” In Spanish you can have plural of that, dios. In Arabic, ila, is aliha. You have the plural.

You can never have the plural of Allah (swt). The word itself cannot be pluralized. It is a simple sign. When you say Allah (swt), every letter means something from His Greatness. We don’t have to go through that but every letter of the Holy Name, Lafzhu ‘l-Jalala, means something. If you omit one letter, it still points to the Creator. If you take the alif away, it becomes Lillah, “for Allah (swt).” If you take away the first lam, it becomes Lahu, “to Him.” If you take away the last lam, it becomes Hu. Even if you take out every single letter, it will still point to Allah (swt). That is how great that Name is, so don’t be afraid to say His Name.

Say His Name and He will say your name. When you mention Him, He will mention you. If you mention Him in front of your friends, even if they don’t help you mention His Name, they will all look at you in a strange way, Allah (swt) will mention your name in front of malaa’ikah. All of them will pray for you and they will ask for you. They will ask Allah (swt) to forgive you if you get one tear in your eye. O human being, let this be your endeavor. If you get one tear for the wrongs that you have done to people and the wrongs you have done to your Creator, that one eyelash that got wet from that tear will testify for you that you have cried from the fear of Allah (swt) and from the badness that you have done. Allah (swt) is Ghafoorun Raheem, He is certainly Forgiving, He is certainly very Merciful.
