“Two Men Broke My Back”

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

23 March, 2012 Burton, Michigan

Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

O Believers, Muslims! Allah (swt) sent His Messenger Sayyidina Muhammad (s) to verify what we have to follow in this life. Allah (swt) gave him the message perfect, not missing anything from what He (swt) revealed to him. Allah (swt) chose and honored the Sahaabah (r) to see the Prophet (s) and to be his Companions. All of them were rewarded for being Companions to the Prophet (s). Some of them received more knowledge from him privately, while others received different knowledges openly. After the Prophet (s) left dunya, these guided Sahaabah (r) shared with the Muslims whatever the Prophet (s) gave to them privately or openly. I will mention what Imam Bukhari (r) said in this hadith from Sayyidina `Ali (r):

عن علي قال : أنا أول من يجثو للخصومة بين يدي الرحمن يوم القيامة

Anaa awwal man yajthoo li’l-khusoomati bayna yadayhi ’r-rahman yawm al-qiyamah.

I am the only one to be present in the Divine Presence on Judgment Day to those who did not accept me and run away from me. (Bukhari)

The Prophet (s) said, “I will be the first one to be mukhasim (to stand against them or be their prosecutor).” This hadith means the Prophet (s) doesn't accept baatil, falsehood, or he will not be happy with anything against Shari`ah and, therefore, he will stand against any person who breaks Shari`ah or his message, as Allah (swt) gave him that right. The evidence of this is in the Holy Qur'an, where Allah (swt) said:

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَه ُوَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ

Faman ya`mal mithqaala dharratin khayran yarah wa man ya`mal mithqaala dharratin sharran yarah.

Whosoever has done an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whosoever has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it. (Surah az-Zalzalah, 99:7-8)

So after we build this up and understand it, we have to see what the Sahaabah (r) understood from this, and we can quote what Sayyidina `Ali (r) said:

قصم ظهري رجلان عالم متهتك وجاهل متنسك

Qasam zhahree rajulaan, `aalimun mutahattiq wa jaahilun mutanassiq.

Two kinds of people broke my back: a proud scholar and a rude ignorant.

He said, qasam zhahree rajulaan, “Two men broke my back, they gave me a hard time,” and also that the ummah must not do this:

1. `alimun mutahattiq wa jaahilun mutanassiq, “A scholar who is always shouting and blocking people, showing that he is something, saying, ‘I am the best, I am the good one, listen to me!’ and who makes people run away from him by making everything mutahattiq, saying, ‘This is kufr, this is bida`, this is shirk, this is haraam!’”

2. “A mutanassiq (monk or priest) creating a situation whereby people will say, ‘This is a pious person,’ and they will go to him for advice, but he gives them the wrong answers.”

We are not scholars, but those who claim they are scholars are under the khitaab, address of Sayyidina `Ali (r) in this address. So one shouts at people and the other misadvises and confuses them. When Shari`ah applies, as every pious person that Allah (swt) has mentioned in the Holy Qur’an goes by:

أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاء اللّهِ لاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon.

Behold! Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surat al-Yunus, 10:62)

Those awliyaullah, those sultans give Shari`ah and someone ignorant comes and does not want to accept it. And one is looking at those who are trying to destroy Shari`ah and he is giving them an opportunity to keep coming against it. He is caressing them, petting them, and allowing them to not follow Shari`ah. One is being strict on people, making them run away, and Allah (swt) said:

إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

Inna ma` al-`usri yusra.

With difficulty comes ease. (Surat al-Inshirah, 94:6)

The other is always trying to be easy-going, saying, “Don’t be tough,” and he is deviating people from Shari`ah. Since he is pious, people think that what he is saying is true, although he doesn't know anything about Shari`ah and fabricates things in his imagination, bringing issues that are not Islamic!

Sayyidina `Ali (r) also said:

العلم يرفع الوضيع , والجهل يضع الرفيع

Al-`ilm yarfa`u al-wadee` wa ’l-jahl yada` ar-raf`ee.

Knowledge raises up the ignorant one and ignorance lowers the high one.

The one who is in kindergarten is raised up to be in high school and the one in high school is raised up to be a college professor. Islam cannot be learned without knowledge and the Prophet (s) mentioned many ahadith on this issue. Then Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, “Who is high, ignorance will bring him down,” because people think he is knowledgeable as he shows piety by always reading the Holy Qur'an and hadith and doing dhikr, but since he lacks knowledge, he will bring them down.

Sayyidina `Ali (r) also said, “Knowledge is better than wealth, so don’t run from one place to another to sell people your knowledge as it cannot be sold!” Knowledge of Islam has to be shared, as ordered by the Prophet (s):

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

Maa ataakumu ’r-rasoolu fa-khudhoohu wa maa nahaakum `anhu fantahoo.

So take what the Messenger assigns to you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

It means whatever you were given by the Prophet, give it out. You must order what is good and forbid what is bad, as Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an:

وَأَمَرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ

W ’amaroo bi ’l-ma`roof wa nahaw `ani ’l-munkar.

And enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. (Surat al-Hajj, 22:41)

So don’t sell knowledge as it protects you. You are safeguarding and protecting your money, and everyone thinks of how to protect their bank accounts, hide their income, how to make this or that, and that will make you fall into mistakes because you are trying to protect your money. But knowledge will protect you and support you. On the opposite side, you have to protect money and keep your mind busy with how to protect it. No, be a normal person and don’t run after money because it will come to you by itself, so do what you have to do and don't run after it.

Also, knowledge is like a judge, whereas wealth has to be defended, mahkoomun `alayhi, you will be judged for it and must justify where you got it and what you did with it. But knowledge you can control, just like a judge has knowledge, and from the knowledge the Prophet (s) gave you will give examples to convince people about their lives. This is what Sayyidina `Ali (r) was mentioning in order to realize how much we are in need of Islamic knowledge. And the hadith:

Maa nazala fee ahaadin min al-quraan maa nazala fee `Ali ibn Abi Talib.

(Among the Companions), the most revelations that came to the Prophet (s) were revealed in regard to `Ali ibn Abi Talib (r ). (ibn Hajar in Tarikh Dimashq)

From all the Sahaabah (r), Sayyidina `Ali (r) was mentioned in the Holy Qur’an the most, and Allah (swt) sent revelation about his greatness for every incident that happened in his time or for any issue, whatever it may have been.

Also, Prophet (s) said Sayyidina `Ali (r):

أنا مدينة العلم و علي بابه

Anaa madinatu 'l-`ilmi wa `Aliyyun baabuha.

I am the City of Knowledge and `Ali is it's door. (al-Haakim, Tirmidhi)

May Allah (swt) show us His Mercy. And this hadith that I am going to mention is showing something that will amaze people and they will ask, “What kind of hadith is this and what is the meaning behind it?” The meaning behind it is to show the Mercy of Allah (swt) to Ummat an-Nabi (s), how much Allah loved that nation!

Allah (swt) said:

Kuntum khayra ummatin ukhrijat li ’n-naas taamuroona bi ’l-ma`roofi wa tanhawna `ani ’l-munkari wa tu’minoona billaah.

You are the best of people, evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. (Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)

So that hadith shows why Allah (swt) loves and is patient with Ummat an-Nabi (s) and forgives them, even if they make sins and mistakes. And that is quoted from Bukhari and Muslim; if you don’t mention from Bukhari and Muslim they say they have to “check it.” We will mention one, and there are others from Ibn Hibban and Ahmad, but I will mention the one from Bukhari:

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أتاني آت من ربي فأخبرني أو قال بشرني أنه من مات من أمتي لا يشرك بالله شيئا دخل الجنة قلت وإن زنى وإن سرق قال وإن زنى وإن سرق

Qaala rasoolullaahi (s) ataanee aat min rabbee fa-akhbaranee aw qaala basharanee annahu man maata min ummatee laa yushrik billaahi shayan dakhal al-jannah. qultu wa in zaana wa in saraqa, qaala wa in zaana wa in saraq.

Prophet (s) said, “Jibreel came to me and gave me good tidings from Allah that whoever died from my ummat without associating anyone with Me will enter Paradise.”

It means anyone who says, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah” (that Allah has no partner or a son, etc.) and who accepts to say, “Muhammadun Rasoolullah” (that Sayyidina Muhammad is His Messenger and His perfect `abd) will enter Paradise.

So the Prophet (s) asked him a question, “Wa in zaana wa in saraq, even if he did adultery or he stole?”

Prophet (s) wants to get that mercy for the ummah so he sent that question to make the ummah happy with the answer Jibreel would bring.

Jibreel (a) said, “Even if he made adultery and wronged someone, he will enter Paradise.”

This means if he accepts that Allah has no partner and he says, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun

Rasoolullah,” he will enter Paradise. It means whoever dies with this belief will enter Paradise.

O Muslims! That does not mean you should commit adultery and rob someone, but it is to show us how much mercy Allah (swt) has for Ummat an-Nabi.

May Allah (swt) make us under shafa`ah of the Prophet (s).
