The Trust

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een.

Something that is very important in human life is to have the characteristic that shows us how far we can go with what has been given to us. Allah said in Holy Qur'an:

اِنَّا عَرَضْنَا الْأَمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالْجِبَالِ فَأَبَيْنَ أَن يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَأَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا وَحَمَلَهَا الْإِنسَانُ

إِنَّهُ كَانَ ظَلُومًا جَهُولًا

Indeed, We offered the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains, but they refused to undertake it, being afraid, but Man undertook it! He proved to be a tyrant and a fool.

(Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:72)

Allah mentioned that He offered the Amaanah that He was keeping since the Day of Creation, Allah knows when that was, they express it as the ‘Day of Promises’ when Allah asked us, alastu bi rabbikum, qaaloo balaa, “Am I not Your Lord,” and we said, “Yes.”

[Allah asked] “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes!” (Surat al-Araaf, 7:172)

He offered us a Trust, inna `aradnaa, and you were exposed to what He wants to give you, and when Allah says, ‘We offered (exposed),’ it means He has given everyone a Trust to keep. Allah trusted that we are going to return it just as we took it. In normal life, everyone is entrusted with something: the father and mother are entrusted to raise their children very well, that is an Amaanah. When Allah gave you a child He gave you something that belongs to Him, because He created that child. When Allah gave you a body that is a trust, because He gave you a physical body, you have to keep it clean as it should be; if we don't keep it clean we are going to be asked.

One time Grandshaykh (q), may Allah bless his soul, explained the meaning of Amaanah in dunya between people, which is supposed to be strictly observed, so what do you think about in Akhirah? He said that if someone comes to you and says, "O my brother! I am traveling to Hajj for pilgrimage.” At that time, there was no system that took you quickly, they went in caravans and it took years. “If someone came to you and said, ‘I have this Amaanah I want you to keep for me,’ paper, jewelry, money in a sealed package that he gives to you, you have no right to open it and see.”

He entrusted it to you and you have to return it to him in the same condition as when he gave it to you. He says, “I am going for Hajj or for travel and need you to keep this package for me until I come back.” What are the steps you have to take? He asked you to keep it, he went to Hajj and did not return for one, two, three, five, seven years, so what should you do? You might become sick and get old or might even die. So what do you have to do with that Amaanah?

You must entrust it to someone else to keep and not open it, from one generation to another. You have no right to open it and check it, you have to keep that package clean and closed because that one did not say to you, “If I don't come, open it in seven years,” so you cannot open it even if you have to wait until Judgment Day as it is a trust in dunya.

What about when Allah (swt) trusted us for Akhirah? The Trust He offered us, if the whole world with all its jewels, all gold and silver, is compared to the Trust Allah gave us when we were in His Presence, not as physical forms but as souls when He created us and kept us in His Presence, the Trust He entrusted to us is more valuable than this whole world, as it is said:

لو كانت الدنيا تعدل عند الله جناح بعوضة ما سقى كافراً منها شربة ماء

If the value of this dunya weighed the wing of a mosquito, Allah would never give a cup of water for the unbelievers to drink. (Tirmidhi)

When He entrusted us, He expects us to return it as clean as when He gave it to us, is it not? Allah (swt) is not like human beings. If someone trusted you with an amaanah and never said to you, “If ten years pass and I don’t come, you take it,” if they don’t come to take it you have to wait. But for Allah, everyone is going to be taken back to Him: inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji`oon, we belong to Allah and we return to Him. We are going back to deliver what He trusted us with as clean as when we were given it, and from one to another there is a different Amaanah. That is why it is said that the Prophet (s) holds the Amaanah of every human being entrusted to him. Also, that is why Awliyaullah are struggling through many means to reach the Amaanah that Prophet (s) will deliver to them and their followers.

That is why everyone is thinking, “When are you going to deliver me my Amaanah? When am I going to be a Wali, when am I going to become a Trustworthy One?” If you want to be trustworthy, you must return the Trust clean. That is why Allah wanted to show the Prophet (s) His Greatness, so He invited him to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa, where He entrusted him (s) to deliver what He gave him, responsibility for the Ummah. It is your responsibility to keep that Amaanah and return it to the Prophet (s) and the Prophet (s) will give to Allah on your behalf.

Grandshaykh (q) said from the secrets they inherit from the Prophet (s), and every Wali and scholar is different, the Prophet (s) went to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa and there, as for sure in that moment inna `aradna ‘l-amaanata `ala ‘s-samaawaati wa ‘l-ardi wa ‘l-jibaal, Allah offered the Amaanah, not one but on the number of human beings from the beginning to the end of all Creation, from ins or jinn or angels, their Amaanah is in hands of the Prophet (s), but what concerns us here is human beings. So Allah delivered to the Prophet (s) the Amaanah of human beings and that is why he is Rasoolullah, the Messenger of Allah (swt), over all other prophets and messengers, and he carries their Trusts, as well.. There, Allah with His Greatness showed him all the Trusts of human beings and in a moment the Prophet (s) learned all of them!

Every soul has a Trust with a code, but what kind of code? For example, what is the most precious stone that people want? Diamonds. With today’s technology they assign every stone a code that you cannot see; it is engraved with a laser, so it is identified as stolen by that unique code, while before there was no such thing. The Amaanah for every soul has an encrypted code like a microchip that the Prophet (s) reads, because Allah (swt) entrusted it to him, so he has to know everything. Through that chip the Prophet (s) sees what each person is going to do throughout his life. So when Allah gave that to him (s), and gave `Uloom al-Awwaleen wa ‘l-Akhireen, Knowledges of Before and After, He veiled the code and Prophet (s) only saw everyone clean. Allah hid what they are going to do in dunya from the moment they are born.

We have honored the Children of Adam. (Surat al-Israa’, 17:70)

The Prophet (s) saw them clean and pure and Allah said, “I honored them with My Light and the Light of Adam. Do you accept them and promise to return them to Me clean, just as you received them?”

Prophet (s) was happy and said, “Yes I accept,” and put his hand on his heart, as Grandshaykh (q) showed us.

Then as soon as the Prophet (s) accepted, Allah showed the reality of what each person will do in dunya and Prophet (s) saw all their bad behavior, darkness and oppression, their jealousy, hatred, malice and every kind of bad characteristic that everyone is carrying like wild animals left in the jungle eating each other. Everyone, not just here, but everyone around the world, each one has different characteristics of wild animals. If you approach the lion, he will slash you with his claws! All of us are angry within.

So the Prophet (s) saw that and said, “Yaa Rabbee! I cannot carry that responsibility. When You gave them to me they were pure and clean.”

Allah (swt) said, “Their character and behavior is bad and they make conspiracies against each other.”

Yesterday we watched a debate for the most powerful position in the world between two who want to be in power in the White House. That debate carried a lot of anger and accusations, and Islam teaches us to be peaceful and not accuse each other, but to try to make peace. How are they going to make peace in the Middle East when they cannot debate each other in peace? People talk about interfaith dialogue on a religious level, but first presidents and leaders must reach understanding and tolerance. Today world leaders are all angry with other leaders. To tame these wild behaviors, we have to do interfaith within ourselves, with our ego, bad desires, good desires, and meditate, reflect, focus, contemplate on our soul, body, desires and mind in order to improve: that is how to return the Trust Allah gave you.

The Prophet (s) said, “Yaa Rabbee, that is too heavy on me!”

In one moment, Allah sent His Mercy on them and said, “For your sake, yaa Muhammad, I forgive them, I will bring them back to purity to be clean as when I gave them to you.”

To learn about character, our nature, put on toy in front of two children. What will happen? They will immediately fight over the toy, even two brothers, or brother and sister, or two sisters. Leave them a few minutes, then return to find them fighting and crying. Also our souls cry from the bad desires our ego pursues, and these circles of dhikrullah clean us of bad characteristics and erase our bad actions of the last week. Grandshaykh (q) called dhikrullah a cleaning machine, because it cleans us of all our sins and bad behaviors.

Trust is important; we accepted the Trust when Allah (swt) asked us:

When Your Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam their descendants from their loins and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying), “Am I not your Lord?” they said, “Yes, we testify!” (Remember this) in case you say on the Day of Judgment, “We were never mindful of this!” (Surat al-A`raf, 7:172)

Allah asked everyone, “Am I not your Lord, Creator?” and we said, “Yes.” We took the Amaanah and signed it, which is a contract. When you buy something today under contract, you sign and the other party signs, then neither side can breach that contract. We signed a contract with Allah when we said, “Yes, when we will be created and go to Earth, we will not come against Your will and we will follow the Messenger, Sayyidina Muhammad (s).”

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

“And in the time of Jesus follow Jesus, in the time of Noah follow Noah, and each prophet in his time.” So in this time we have Sayyidina Muhammad (s), who told us to follow his way in order to reach Allah (swt), so our responsibility is to make interfaith; often we speak interfaith with others but forget to make interfaith with ourselves. Audit yourself, every day examine what you have done in order to correct your actions and keep your Trust clean.

The Trust Allah gave you, however long, life of 100, 70 or 20 years is in His Hands, not in the hands of science, doctors, medicine or anyone. Allah created all doctors, all forms of medicine, all the sciences from His will. Instead of saying, “That doctor cured me,” it is far better to say, “Allah cured me through the method and inspiration He gave to that doctor.” That treatment came through inspiration to the heart of His servant. You have to check yourself, how to be better, cleaner and radiant in the eyes of Allah (swt), His Prophet, Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and Awliyaullah.

So I repeat, interfaith has to be between world leaders and we must take a lesson from the US presidential election, that what is shown to us on TV is not human behavior [it is animal behavior]: anger and no love, no respect, everyone accusing the other for no reason. Allah does not like that. May Allah forgive them and forgive us. We are waiting for the outcome. What are children going to say? Adults might criticize for no reason, but when children see adults behaving so badly, accusing and so on, they will say, “This is our president?” Not only here, but in every country they have the same problem. This shows how we are not able to control our ego. May Allah give us power to control our ego and bring peace to Earth as soon as possible, as too much evil is coming now.

May Allah keep our Amaanah and all of us clean under wings of our shuyookh and guide us on the Way of Allah (swt)!

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
