The Rights of Muslims Towards Each Other

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

4 July 2014 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Institute & Mosque (ASIM)

We are in a time that is very dangerous if we don't listen to the words of the Prophet (s):

Before the Hour comes, there will be a tribulation like patches of dark night. A man will get up a believer and go to sleep a kaafir, or will go to sleep a believer and awakens a kaafir, unbeliever. The one who sits will be better than one who stands and one who walks will be better than one who runs. Break your bows, cut their strings and strike your swords against stones. If someone comes to kill any of you, then be like the better of the two sons of Adam. (Abu Musa al-Ash`aree, Abu Dawud.)

You look at the sky in evening and you see chunks that are dark, with no stars. There is going to be too much fitna in the Muslim world and it will destroy everything!

Al-qaaim feehaa khayrun min al-maashee.

The one who walks will be better than one who runs. (Abu Musa al-Ash`aree, Abu Dawud)

That is because you cannot choose sides: Muslims are killing Muslims.

"‏إذ التقى المسلمان بسيفيهما فالقاتل والمقتول في النار‏"‏ قلت يارسول الله، هذا القاتل فما بال المقتول‏؟‏ قال‏:‏ ‏"‏إنه كان حريصاً على قتل صاحبه‏"‏

The Prophet (s) said, "When two Muslims are engaged in a combat against each other with their sword's and one is killed, both are doomed to Hell". I said, "O Messenger of Allah! As to the one who kills, it is understandable, but why the slain one?" He (s) replied: "He was eager to kill his opponent".

(Abu Bakrah Ath-Thaqafi, Bukhari & Muslim)

Al-qa`idu khayran min al-waqif.

The one who sits will be better than one who stands. (Abu Musa al-Ash`aree, Abu Dawud)

The one sitting is better than the one standing and the one who is standing is better than the one who is walking, as he is walking to the fitna, and the one who is standing is also in danger as he might go to window to look and be hit by something.

And the Prophet (s) said:

قَالُوا فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا قَالَ ‏"‏ كُونُوا أَحْلاَسَ بُيُوتِكُمْ ‏‏

Break your bows, cut their strings and strike your swords against stones. If someone comes to kill any of you, then be like the better of the two sons of Adam. (Abu Musa al-Ash`aree, Abu Dawud)

Prophet (s) said, “If you are disturbed by this situation, then go to mountain and take your bow and arrow and break it and take your sword and hit it on a rock until you empty your heart of anger.” You see when people are angry they hit their head on a wall, but don't hit your sword on any Muslim nor on any person.

The Prophet (s) said

Qaala Rasoolullah (s) al-mu’min li ’l-mu’min ka ’l-bunyaa yashuddu ba`duhu ba`dan.

The Prophet (s) said, "A Believer to another Believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other." The Prophet (s) then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced.

(Abu Moosa al-`Asharee, Bukhari)

Don't support any groups, but support each other. That hadith is muttafaqun `alayh (Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim).

The Prophet (s) said:

مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي تَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ مَثَلُ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى مِنْهُ عُضْوٌ تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ الْجَسَدِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى

Mathalu ‘l-mu`mineena fee tawaaddihim wa ta`atufihim mathalu ‘l-jasadi idhaa ashtaka minhu `udwun tada`a lahu saa’irul jasadi bi ’s-sahari wa ‘l-humma.

The similitude of Believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body: when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches because of sleeplessness and fever. (Muslim)

It is like one body: if one piece or organ or part of that body, even you have fire burning a little bit of the body, the whole body will fall apart. so the Prophet (s) is saying, “Don't fall apart.”

And ibn `Umar (r) said:

The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He doesn't oppress him and doesn't put him into ruin, and whoever is concerned for the needs of his brother, Allah is concerned for his needs, and whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens of the Day of Judgment and whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) on the Day of Judgment. (Tirmidhi)

The Days of Allah’s Rahmah

And this is the month of rahmat, mercy, and the Prophet (s) said the first ten days is mercy, and the middle ten days is forgiveness. Now we are under Allah's Rahmat, we are dressed with that manifestation of Allah's Mercy, and He raises us up and forgives us in the second ten days, and if you continue well, then Allah will raise you and save you from the Fire in last ten days of Ramadan..

O Muslims! Be helpful. If you see what kind of miseries are happening. Yesterday Human Rights Watch said 23 ladies have been raped in a small village in an Arab country, some of them were raped in front of their fathers and mothers, and we are here and we have to thank Allah (swt) in every moment! Who helps his brother to take away one difficulty of his difficulties, Allah will take away one of his difficulties on Judgment Day. On that Day when everyone is afraid.

Yawma yafiru ’l-mar’oo wa min akheehi wa ummihi wa abeehi wa saahibatihi wa baneehi.

On the Day when people will run away from their brothers and sisters, from his mother and his father and then from wife and children. (Surat `Abasa, 80:34-36)

The Day that everyone runs from his brother his wife, his father and his mother and his children, not like we care for them in dunya; we cannot see anyone touch or say one word against them. So what about in Akhirah, when you run away from everyone, even mother and father and brother? It means everyone will forget his family and you say, “Yaa Rabbee! Myself! [Save] myself!” It is coming, when you die it is there.

Contemplating Death

And the Judgment Day is different, it is more [worse]. Let us think what will happen to us when we die. Go to the graveyard and wait for someone bringing a deceased person and look. You will take an example of what is going to happen to you, the same thing. Why after Fajr...it is Sunnah, you see it narrated in Riyaad as-Saaliheen[1], the Prophet (s) used to lie down on his right side as one lays in the grave, between the sunnah and fard raka`ats of Fajr, lying as one in the grave to remember death, giving an example to the Sahaabah (r) and to us. When you remember death you know how much you need to fix yourself, especially in this month because shayaateen have been chained.

We were studying a hadith this morning about when you make wudu, all your sins will fall down: when you wash your mouth all the sins of speaking and the tongue will fall down; when you wash your hands, all sins of hands are gone and when you wash head and face all sins of thoughts of the eyes and smell will go. And sleep on wudu and keep your wudu. I see everyone of you here taking shower in the morning and taking shower in the evening; it is a wudu, make the niyyah that it is wudu and the sin will go with that water, which is dead water. Why the Prophet (s) said not to use the water from wudu? It is dead water, because all of it is sin going out from the body.

When the Prophet (s) says “laa” you cannot say “yes”, and when the Prophet (s) says “no don't do that” don't do it.

Why do we pray Jumu`ah? Because whatever Prophet (s) gave us, take it:

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

Wa maataakumu ’r-rasoolu fakhudhoohu wa maa nahaakum `anhu fantahoo.

Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

Whatever Prophet (s) gave us, take it! So we pray Jumu`ah in jama`at. Why do we pray and yet we do something opposite from the order of the Prophet (s)? The Prophet (s) said:

‏ولا تحاسدو

Wa laa tahaasadoo.

And don't be jealous of each other. (Abu Hurayrah. Bukhari)

And yet we envy each other, our father or mother or our brother. Competing in religion is no problem. Jealousy in matters of religion is okay, but not in dunya matters. If you see someone sincere and you get jealous of him, you will become sincere. The Prophet (s) said, laa tahaasadoo. Laa is very strong denial as in laa ilaaha illa-Llah; it is a very grave sin to be jealous of each other.

Wa min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad.

And from the evil of the envious when he envies. (Surat al-Falaq, 113:5)

Wa laa tanaajashoo.

don't raise your price too much of what you are selling. (Abu Hurayrah. Bukhari)

When you see no one selling what you are selling, you raise the price and have a monopoly. The Prophet (s) said don't do that and some people raise prices in order to bargain, but don't do that.

The Prophet (s) said:

عن ‏ ‏أبي هريرة ‏ ‏رضي الله عنه ‏أن رسول الله ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏قال ‏ ‏إياكم والظن فإن الظن أكذب الحديث ولا تحسسوا ولا تجسسوا ولا ‏ ‏تناجشوا ‏ ‏ولا تحاسدوا ولا تباغضوا ولا تدابروا وكونوا عباد الله إخوانا.

Iyyakum wa’zh-zhann fa-inna azh-zhanna akdhab al-hadeeth wa laa tahasasoo wa laa tajasasoo wa laa tanaajashoo wa laa tahaasadoo wa laa tabaaghadoo wa laa tadaabaroo wa koonoo `ibaadullaahi ikhwaana.

Beware of suspicion for it is the worst of false tales, and don't look for the other's faults, and don't spy and don't raise the price, one against the other, and don't desert (cut your relations with) one another. O Allah's slaves! Be brothers! (Abu Hurayrah. Bukhari)

Wa laa tabaaghadoo, don't get angry with each other; don’t hate each other. If you see two people fighting, try to solve it in order that they don't hate each other. Wa laa tadaabaroo, don't separate to the other's back. O Allah's slaves! Be brothers!

The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He doesn't oppress him. (Tirmidhi)

Wa koonoo. `ibaadullahi ikhwaana, “Be brothers to each other,” and al-Muslim akhu ’l-Muslim. laa yuzhlimahu, “The Muslim is brother to the Muslim, he does not oppress.” Don't put him down and don't leave him, support him.

At-taqwa haahunna.

Taqwa (piety) is right here [and he pointed to his heart three times]. (Abu Hurairah, Nawawi)

Don't say with your mouth what is not in your heart. if your heart is taqwa let your tongue be taqwa also.

that is related by Muslim. the Muslim to Muslim there are limits you have to know don't be aggressive on him. it is forbidden to take the blood of a Muslim to take his money and to accuse him of haraam, of honor of his children. Sometimes people fall into these problems.

‏Iyyakum wa’ dh-dhann, beware of suspicion; be careful of bad thoughts about others, as verily, many of the bad doubting is a sin. Try to avoid doubting, try to have good doubts, husn adh-dhann. If someone comes to you with a bad story, try to check if it is correct or not.

May Allah (swt) forgive us in these precious days, the days of sincerity and piety that Allah gave the Ummah, where the Prophet (s) said:

رجب شهر الله، وشعبان شهري، ورمضان شهر أمتي

Rajabun shahrullah wa sha`baanu shahree wa ramadanu shahra ummattee.

Rajab is Allah's month, Sha`baan is my month and Ramadan is the month of the Ummah.

(Abul-Fath ibn Abi Fawaris in his `Amalee from al-Hasan, mursalan)

Rajab is the month of Allah, the month in which Allah brought the Prophet (s) to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa to Heavens, to see it physically and spiritually, and Sha`ban is month of the Prophet (s).

The Messenger of Allah did not fast in any month as he fasted in Sha`ban; he used to fast all of it except a little (break his fast), and sometimes he fasted all of it." (Sayyida A`yesha, an-Nasaa'ee)

And Ramadan is the month of the Ummah.

(Abul-Fath ibn Abi Fawaris in his `Amalee from al-Hasan, mursalan)

As-sawmu lee wa anaa ajzee bih.

Fasting is for Me and I will reward it. (Hadith Qudsi, Bukhari and Muslim)

And when Allah rewards, there is no limit to His rewards, this is the month of no limits, the month of maghfirah, the month of forgiveness! If you go home from work and your wife did not cook, don’t get angry, keep anger down, don't shout at her but eat anything, as anger is root of all bad characters.
