Zhuhr Suhbah
A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.
Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,
nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.
أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ
Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
[Suhbah in progress.] ...and we do not appreciate what they give us, we begin to complain if we get sick, always we get something that has to be solved, too much dunya worries, and we don’t remember that we are strong until we get sick and when we come back strong we have to be more thankful.
When Prophet (s) and all the Sahaabah (r) were on their deathbeds, they increased their asking Allah (swt) for something to give to the Ummah, because the intensity of death is not so easy. People say, “Oh, let's go to hospital, they will treat us,” and according to the severity of impending death, they go to a bigger hospital that can clean them completely. We should be...that Allah gave to us an appreciation of your work in dunya if you worked for Akhirah, then Allah will give you heavenly support, power and understanding about what is necessary (a priority) and what is not.
Just now I entered here and felt something changing in my system from worse to better; that is from the reality Prophet (s) gave his Ummah. When Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, was on his deathbed, he entered into...he was in the bed for a long time and we saw him cry more often. When Prophet (s) left dunya and was on his deathbed he cried, “What is going to happen to my Ummah after?”
Allah sent Jibreel (a) to tell him, “Yaa Muhammad, I have forgiven them, before they even came to dunya in the life that preceded this life, in the life of soul and spirit.”
Allah instructed Prophet (s) through Jibreel what he needs to do for the benefit of the Ummah, and he sweat profusely on his deathbed. Then he called Sayyidina `Ali (r) and Sayyidina `Umar (r) to his presence and took off his white shirt that his tears fell upon, qamees `abiyad, until it was soaked in his sweat and tears. At that moment he stopped and said, “Take this shirt as an amaanah and give it to Sayyidina `Uways al-Qarani.” They wondered why they had to take it to Sayyidina `Uways, who had never been to visit Prophet (s) when he was well, and now Prophet was calling for him. Prophet (s) said, “Don’t wonder too much. It’s my order to take my shirt and go to that village and look for `Uways al-Qarani and give him that amaanah.” Prophet (s) knows what he is doing.
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ
Nor does he speak from his own desire, it is nothing but Revelation revealed to him.
(Surat al-Najm, 53:3-4)
Never he spoke in dunya except it was Wahiyy, even if he said, “Yaa `Ayesha, I want to eat.” His every action isWahiyy. Don’t underestimate Prophet’s (s) power. So he gave them the shirt and told them to take it to `Uways al-Qarani (r). The Sahaabah (r) wondered what was in the shirt. They finally reached the village and asked for `Uways al-Qarani, but no one knew him by this name, so they couldn’t find him. Sayyidina `Umar worried they wouldn’t fulfill their task, and Sayyidina `Ali told him not to worry as the Prophet (s) had told them precisely what to do and then they will find him. He said, “Prophet sent us here to find him so for sure he is here.”
As soon as he said that, they found themselves in front of a boy and they asked him, “Do you know this village?”
He said, “Yes.”
“Do you know `Uways al-Qarani?”
He said, “No.”
They said, “For sure he is here!” They insisted the boy help them find him.
He said, “There is no such person!”
They told him, “He takes care of his elderly mother.”
“Oh! You mean ‘Abu `Abdullah’! Come with me.”
When they found him, they gave him the amaanah and he asked, “How often did you see Prophet (s), yaa `Umar?”
“Daily!”
He said, “No, not with that vision, with the real vision. How often did you see him?”
`Umar said, “How ridiculous a question, when I lived with him all the time!”
He said, “No! That’s with dunya vision, I mean saw him with Akhirah vision, what Allah gave to Prophet to clean the Ummah. Yaa `Umar, this shirt cleaned the Ummah, and each drop of his holy sweat is one person. Allah gave me the power to pass that secret which Prophet (s) passed through his sweat on the shirt to rejuvenate hearts.”
So when we enter the hospital, we hope the doctor will cure us by giving us a tablet--a red, white, or black one--as if he is the one who has the power to take that sickness away. In reality, that is not the case, because you are going to a person who has the least power. Prophet (s) told us what we need to recite to clean ourselves from all kinds of sickness that come on us, but we have to be patient. Like today organic people say, “No, no, no, we have the remedy! Take this tablet and you will be better.” Now the non-organic and organic are both giving a tablet and the patient ends up falling between the hands of two butchers, both are taking your money. You don't know which is better--the black, the white or the yellow--all the while leaving behind what Allah taught His Prophet (s), and Prophet (s) taught the Ummah about cleaning the self.
We come to ask the shaykh, “We have a problem, what can we do?”
“What problem?” he asks, as sometimes he gets tired.
“My husband has this and that, my wife this and that, my job is in jeopardy, my brother is fighting for inheritance.” Everyone is looking for a reason to be upset, to create fitna for no reason. Prophet (s) gave us the real medicine, Ayaat ash-Shifaa, the Verses of Healing, but now people are using them only as a show, not as a Reality of Haqiqat. They want to mix it with Buddhism and Hinduism.
Allah will judge Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims as judgement is in his Hands. So laa tu`allimoo ana ahla, don’t expose people’s faults, or Allah will expose you.
When Sayyidina `Uways al-Qarani (r) got Prophet’s (s) shirt, he put it on his head and said, “Na`am, sadaqta, yaa Rasoolullah,” and then gave it back to Sayyidina `Ali and Sayyidina `Umar (r). Not everyone can give you what you need when you are sick, so Sayyidina `Uways al-Qarani (r) passed back what Prophet (s) passed to him through his noble tears and sweat the Realities he got in the Divine Presence. That is why at that moment Sayyidina `Uways knew Sayyidina `Ali and Sayyidina `Umar were coming, so he prepared himself.
He asked, “Yaa `Umar, did you see Prophet (s) in your lifetime? Not in dreams, that is something else, but did you see him physically?”
Sayyidina `Umar (r) replied, “How can you ask me this? I was with Prophet (s) 24 hours a day.”
He said, “Answer me! Did you see him physically?”
`Umar said, “I saw him once and his feet were under the Seven Earths and his neck was under the `Arsh, like that.”
Sayyidina `Uways (r) then asked Sayyidina `Ali (r), “Did you ever see Prophet (s)?”
Sayyidina `Ali (r) answered, “I saw him once also with my physical eyes. His neck was sitting on the Kursee, Heavenly Throne. The entire dunya disappeared under his blessed knees.”
So both of them saw Prophet (s), and no one knew that secret except them. When the Sahaabah (r) came to know about that, all of them rushed to ask except `Uways al-Qarani (r) (who wasn't there), as his elderly mother had said, “If you leave me, I will not be happy with you.” Because he listened to his mother, Allah (swt) gave him that rank.
People get sick, some with a difficult illness and some with an easy illness. Allah (swt) said:
وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ فَإِذَا جَاء أَجَلُهُمْ لاَ يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً وَلاَ يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ
And for all people a term has been set and when their time has come, they can neither delay it by a single moment, nor can they hasten it. (Surat al-A`raaf, 7:34)
If you recite that verse day and night you cannot change the duration of life Allah (swt) decreed for you, no tablet or medicine can change it, nothing can change it except the relationship between you and Allah (swt) has to be strong. Your belief in Allah, in Prophet (s), and in pious people has to be strong. If we keep reciting this ayah, which is Kalam al-Qur’an, it’s alive, and when Awliya recite the Holy Qur’an tears pour from their eyes. They see the mistakes and goodness of all who pass before them, and they ask Allah (swt) to forgive them, and they make du`as for the Ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad (s).
When I went for a physical check-up, the doctor said, “You have stressed yourself too much and you have to rid yourself of it.” That is a signal to everyone that they must be checked, not only physically, but also spiritually. He said, “We have to check to see how much stress your body can resist and how much you can give.” Subhaan-Allah, we were in dhikrullah and complete seclusion for sixty days, not seeing anyone except high priority cases, so we hope Allah will dress us from piety and sincerity, with love and humility, to always be at His service.
People began to say, “O, Shaykh Hisham is sick,” but on your own you cannot come out of it as there is no permission. Look at what happened to Grandshaykh AbdAllah (q) before he left dunya. He had an operation on his eyes (cataracts removed) and from that moment his health began to deteriorate. I visited him; he was on the bed and my brothers and sat near him on the floor, and Grandshaykh said, “Prophet is calling me.” By 15th Sha`baan, I had to leave Beirut to go back to Damascus, forty or sixty days before his return to Sham. He said, “I am going to a place where no one will find me.”
We didn't understand the meaning, because out of love and belief you can make your shaykh so powerful. Belief in your shaykh takes you to belief in Prophet (s), which takes you to believe in Allah (swt), as it should be, not as people teach spirituality today without a basis in Islam. Everything they are doing is nonsense, meeting with Buddhists, Hindus, and people who do sihr (black magic). It’s all baatil, disappearing.
Grandshaykh (q) needed a transfusion as he was losing blood. After receiving one unit, he told us the blood they gave him was so spiritually filthy, as the blood in our bodies is either good or bad. We don't pay attention to cleaning it, which can only be done by prayer, fasting, making du`a, and dhikr. Today many eliminate all this and say, “Hindus said to do this,” or “Buddhists said to do that,” following ways that are unacceptable to Awliyaullah.
Grandshaykh (q) said, “The blood they gave me was so filthy that I have to purify it. It has to be clean by the 15th Sha`baan.” It took him fifty-five days, then he awoke from his sleep and said, “Tonight will be the last night of my life in seclusion, so take me to Sham before Fajr to die there (and we took him). That seclusion was completed to clean the blood and because of it, Allah gave permission to Awliyaullah to clean that person’s blood and of all the Ummah.”
We are so lucky to be created from Ummat an-Nabi (s)! May Allah (swt) give us real health, and if someone is going to face death let it be easy, in his bed in his house. It is required from us to remember death daily, as we are full of shortcomings. We don’t do these things, but when we remember death it cleans us, like a filter removing all the toxins from our body, restoring good health.
May Allah (swt) forgive us and bless us.
Bi-hurmati ‘l-habeeb, bi-hurmati ‘l-Fatihah.
