The Only One True Servant of Allah is Sayyidina Muhammad (s)

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

12 July 2012 New Jersey

Suhbah at Private Residence after Salaat al-Maghrib

Pray for this child. Fatihah. The du`a of the mu’min is accepted; if my du`a is not accepted, inshaa-Allah the du`a of someone else will be accepted.

How much ni`mat Allah gave us that we don't appreciate it, and yes still we don’t say, “shukran lillah.” We forget; our only thinking is how much money we have to get and how much our bank account will be filled and how much we are going to get from dunya. Last week one of our friends passed away suddenly in Cyprus, suddenly he had to go. And Allah gave us ni`mat that He didn't give this boy (afflicted toddler who is present in the association). His problem is that he cannot swallow, which means he cannot eat. We enjoy eating and he cannot eat, he is only able to take food by a tube. Allah (swt) takes with this kind of children; they take the difficulty of 70,000 mu’mins! It means that boy carries 70,000 mu’mins. Allah (swt) made you healthy and inshaa-Allah makes him healthy.

Bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

(Salaat al-Maghrib)

(Video starts @ 54:00)

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaadah, nawaytu 's-sulook, lillahi ta`alaa fee haadha 'l-masjid.

I was going to make dhikr, but because our beloved Genghis mentioned about love of the Prophet (s), so now triggered me to speak about love of the Prophet (s)!

Salaam `alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Ati`oollaha wa ati`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

Allah (swt) made the obedience of Prophet (s) a principle and condition in Islam. Why? We will know shortly. I would like to mention that without prejudice, without meaning to be biased, I would like to say, be happy, because Pakistanis are mashaa-Allah, such lovers of the Prophet (s). That doesn't mean that I am biased, but I see their mehfils and associations are all based on love of the Prophet (s). Many Muslim and Arab countries are similar, but it mostly appears that it is molded with the blood of Pakistanis. As I said, that doesn't mean others don’t have that; no, there are many countries of Muslims around the world for whom love of the Prophet (s) is everything. You have many Muslims in Muslim countries like Morocco, Jordan, Syria, even in Saudi Arabia and many Gulf countries, and Turkey, where they are deeply based in the love of the Prophet (s).

The whole system and universe is built on the love of the Prophet (s), and there is nothing to be considered in this dunya or in akhirah that does not have in it the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s); that is impossible! Sso that is why Allah (swt) said a principle:

مَّنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللّهَ

Man yutee` ‘ir-rasool faqad `ata Allah.

Who obeys Prophet obeys Allah. (Surat an-Nisa`, 4:30)

That means you obey this one or that one. We obey our Shaykh because we love him; if we don't love him, we don’t obey him. So Allah wants to say to Muslims and mu’mins, the world, the universe and everything He created, “If you love whom I love, you will be accepted.” Man ata`ar-rasool faqada `ata-Allah, “Who is obeying the Prophet (s) is obeying Allah.” Why did Allah put it in the ayah like that? It has to be man `ata-Allah wa ata` ar-rasool, but it means, “You cannot come to me without ‘ata` ar-rasool.’ Go back and come with adab and discipline, and then when you come with adab to My Presence, it has to be through obedience.” And He used the word “obedience,” and there is no obedience without love, so whoever loved the Prophet (s) loved Allah (swt), which is why He said:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-'Imraan, 3:31)

It means, “Follow the way that He loved me.” The evidence of this in Islam is one ayah that Allah (swt) has made the backbone for Muslims to go to Paradise: if you want to enter Paradise, follow that ayah! Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

This ayah is to show us that the importance of loving the Prophet (s) is what you need, so don’t go right or left. We are not speaking about obligations, which you have to do, but some people say, “Don’t love or praise too much as that is shirk.” Whatever you love or don’t love, still you have to pray, pay zakaat, make Hajj and fast; we aren’t discussing that, we are discussing the importance of love of the Prophet (s), which is the columns that support and built this universe! Allah (swt) did not put pillars to carry the heavens:

Allahu ’Lladhee rafa`a as-samawaati bi-ghayri `amadin tarawnahaa thumma ’stawa `ala ’l-`arsh.

Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority). (Surat ar-Ra'd, 13:2)

What are these pillars that you don't see?

Qad naraa taqallaba wajhika fi ‘s-sama’i falnuwalliyanaka qiblatan tardaahaa.

We see you turning your face to the heavens and now We shall indeed make thee turn in prayer in a direction which will fulfil thy desire. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:144)

Why was the Prophet (s) turning his face in heavens? he saw these pillars that cannot be seen, which are what? In Madinat al-Munawwarah, there is a masjid called “Masjid al-Ghamamah,” built where the clouds came to shade Prophet (s) from the heat of the sun, but not the Sahaabah who traveled with him. It means Allah (swt) sent a breeze, a heavenly air conditioner, that wherever His Beloved One moves that cloud shades him. It appeared there first and they built a masjid there to commemorate that.

When Nimrud threw Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) in the fire, Allah (swt) said:

قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

Yaa naaru koonee bardan wa salaaman `alaa Ibraaheem.

O fire! Be cool and peaceful on Ibrahim. (Surat al-Anbiyaa, 21:69)

Out of love, Allah (swt) sent that cloud. Don't you think that cloud had a cool breeze? Not only it covered the Prophet (s), but its breeze reached all the Sahaabah, giving them a good feeling in that place where it was burning hot. The Prophet (s) never accepts anything without sharing with the ummah, so how could he accept the cloud and its breeze without sharing it with the Sahaabah?

Sharing is love. The Prophet (s) is showing his love to the Sahaabah (r) and, in return, they were in love with him. That is why Allah (swt) sent that verse of the Holy Qur'an, to show His great love to His Prophet (s)! Everyday we read that verse and I will say it now; you will say, “We know it,” and of course we know it. Allah and His angels are doing salawaat on His Prophet. Allah ordered the angels to do salawaat. Out of love, Allah ordered all the angels of heavens to make salawaat and their salawaat is pure. He then ordered the mu’mineen to do salawaat, saying, “Look, My angels are doing salawaat out of love to him (s), so you do salawaat out of love to him, too.” (...)

What is Sayyidina `Umar (r) saying? Allahumma salli ‘alaa Sayyidina Muhammad wa `alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad (s). We will come to Sayyidina `Umar (r), but before that, Allah (swt) made the sign of His Love to follow the way of the Prophet (s)!

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona ’Llaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumu Allahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum wa ‘Llahu ghafoorun raheem.

Say: “If you do love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat Aali `Imran, 3:31)

Anas (r) reported that Prophet (s) said:

لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى أكون أحب إليه من والده وولده والناس أجمعين

Laa yu’minoo ahadakum hatta akoonu ahabu ilayhi min waladihi wa waalidhi wa ’n-naasi ajma`een.

You will not be a true believer until you love me more than your children and parents and all creation. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Who is first, your mother and father, your brother and sister, or the Prophet (s)? That is it! Allah is saying, “I want you to love the Prophet (s) more than anyone!” That is why Prophet (s) said, “None of you can be considered to be a believer until he loves me more than anyone,” because if you love the Prophet (s), Allah loves you. Many people gave their lives for the Prophet (s). In the time of the Prophet (s) and afterwards, and after the Sahaabah (r) until today, Muslims are giving their love to the Prophet (s), who didn't blow up masaajid or make suicide bombings to blow up mazars and cemeteries! He didn't blow up anything to make people upset. You are from one of the good countries that love the Prophet (s) (Pakistan), and on the other hand it is the one place where they are blowing up masaajid, Sufi places and graves, and they are blowing up the graves of Sahaabah in Libya! What kind of love to the Prophet (s) is it when you blow up his Sahaabah (r) in their graves?

Imam Ahmad (r) wrote in his Musnad, that Prophet (s) said, “You don’t love me until you love me more than yourself.” Leave thinking about your love for your children, parents, and wives. The Day will come when you will run away. On the Day of Judgment you will run away, saying, “I have nothing to do with my wife, with my brother, or with my children (I am not responsible for what they did)!” So about that day, Prophet (s) said, “I will come and you don't run from your tribe. I will come and not enter Paradise until the last of the ummah enters Paradise.” The Prophet (s) will not enter Paradise until the entire ummah enters Paradise.

Prophet (s) said in another hadith:

Love Allah for the endless favors He is giving you, and because of your love to Allah, love me.

Look at that (disabled) child today; all of us can swallow, but that poor child cannot swallow. Look at what ni`mat Allah (swt) is giving you! You love Allah (swt) as He is your Creator Who gives you endless favors. Prophet (s) exhorts us to, “Love me because you love Allah. My love is conditional.”

A Bedouin came to the Prophet (s) and asked, “When is the Day of Judgment?” The Prophet (s) said, “What have you prepared for it? I is a long way.” The Bedouin said, “I have not prepared for it much of fasting and praying.” Prophet (s) said, “What did you prepare?” The Bedouin said, “I didn’t prepare anything except love of Allah (swt) and love of the Prophet (s).” The Prophet (s) said, “You will be with the one you love and I am witnessing that you are with the one you love.”

Now we recite Mawlid, qasidas and poetry everywhere, but it is in writing or only on the lips, it is not in reality, which is not easy.

Yaqoolu ash-sha`iru, one poet, al-Bara` ibn al-`Azib, said, yafnu az-zamaanu, the time will expire, wa feehi maa lam yoosaf, as much as I describe and praise the Prophet (s) and describe his greatness, all time will elapse and I will not praise him enough; there is more to be done.”

Allah swt based hubb an-Nabi (s) on hubbillah! If there is no love, no Islam. Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ

fasawfa yaatee Allahu bi qawmin yuhibbuhum wa yuhibboonahu.

Soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him. (Surat al-Maida, 5:54)

Allah loves them and they love him. that means they love the Prophet (s) and those who love the Prophet (s) love Allah (swt).

And describing the believers, like you, Allah (swt) said:

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَشَدُّ حُبًّا لِّلّهِ

Walladheena aamanoo ashaddu hubban lillaah.

But those of faith are overflowing in their love for Allah. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:165)

Allah (swt) loves those who believe because their love to the Prophet (s) is unbelievable.??? Allah said about those who love the Prophet (s), “When you love the Prophet (s), Allah will give you imaan.” Many people come and say, “Pray for me, I want more faith.” I see many like that, and then I look at myself, thinking what do I have also as my faith is little.

Allah (swt) is saying, “I will build up your imaan if you build up love to the Prophet (s). I will decorate the imaan in your heart, but you have to build up love to the Prophet (s) in your heart.” Many awliyaullah speak about love of the Prophet (s), and I will ask a very simple question: can the Prophet (s) be seen in dreams, yes or no? Okay, if the Prophet (s) can be seen in dreams, as we believe this as a part of our faith, then what did the Prophet (s) say?

Man ra'aanee fir-ru'ya fa sa-yaraanee haqqan.

Whoever saw me in a dream will see me in reality.

This means that if person “X” saw the Prophet (s) in a dream, he or she is lucky and no one can say that is not true. If you see the Prophet (s), hear his name, see a light that says it is the Prophet (s), or if you feel the Prophet (s) is there but you do not see him, all of that means you actually saw the Prophet (s), because in a dream his presence can be indicated by a name or a smell and not everyone can see the shape. No one can say you didn't see the Prophet (s), because no one can lie about seeing the Prophet (s)! If he saw the Prophet (s) saying to him, "Do this and this," no way. Even a non-practicing Muslim cannot lie and say he saw the Prophet (s) when he didn't see him. So it means seeing the Prophet (s) is real. If the Prophet (s) says something to you in a dream it is real and it is not something wrong. So out of love from Allah (swt) to His Prophet (s), we have to follow. Allah loves His Prophet (s) and is telling him to say, “Follow me.”

Why did Allah (swt) say about awliyaullah:

أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاء اللّهِ لاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَكَانُواْ يَتَّقُونَ

Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon. Alladheena amanoo wa kaanoo yattaqoon.

Behold! Verily on the Friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve, they who have attained faith and have always been conscious of Him. (Surat al-Yunus, 10:62)

The Saints of Allah have nothing to fear and grieve, to be sad about what and not to fear what? It is so simple: it means, “I granted them to see the Prophet (s) in their dreams,” so what do they have to be sad about anymore? They must not fear anything as they have been honored and granted a heavenly love to see the Prophet (s) in their dreams, so they have no fear of anything. Can anyone who sees the Prophet (s) have fear? The Sahaabah (r) saw the Prophet (s) and they entered Paradise with no account. Anyone who sees the Prophet (s) in a dream will enter Paradise with no account because if that person can see the Prophet (s) then he is under his shafa’a. Many of you saw the Prophet (s) in dreams, not necessarily in the full shape but in some way, and no one can lie, as Sayyidina `Ali (r) said the Prophet (s) said:

في القول البديع عن علي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال من حج حجة الإسلام وغزا بعدها غزوة كتبت غزوته بأربعمائة حجة فانكسرت قلوب قوم لا يقدرون على الجهاد فأوحى الله إليه ما صلى عليك أحد إلا كتبت صلاته بأربعمائة غزوة كل غزوة بأربعمائة حجة

Fi 'l-qawli 'l-badi`ee `an `aliyyin `an an-nabiyy (s) qaala man hajj hajjat al-Islam wa ghazaa ba`dahaa ghazwatan katabat ghazwatahu bi-arba` mi'at hajjah fa-ankasarat quloobi qawmun laa yaqdiroona `alaa al-jihaad fa-awhaa-Llahu ilayhi maa salla `alayka ahadin illa katabat salaatahu bi-arba` mi'at ghazwatin arba` mi'at hajjah.

In the book al-Qawl al-Badi`ee it is related from Sayyidina `Ali (r) that the Prophet (s) said: “Whoever did the obligated Hajj of Islam and after that fought in a battle (of jihad), Allah will write for him 400 pilgrimages. (Upon hearing this) the hearts of those who could not afford to go for jihad were broken, and Allah revealed to Prophet, "None of you makes salawaat on you except that it will be written as if he struggled in the Way of Allah 400 years of jihad and I will reward him 400 pilgrimages."

(Narrated by Abu Hafz in Majalis al-Makkiyya)

What more do you want? One salawaat. Why? Because we are following the footsteps of angels who are continuously doing salawaat, their food is salawaat and they are ordered to do salawaat.

Inna-Llaaha wa malaa'ikatahu yusalloona `ala 'n-nabiyy, yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena aamanoo salloo `alayhi was sallimoo tasleema.

Verily, Allah and His angels send praise on the Prophet. O Believers! Pray upon him and greet him. (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:56)

The Prophet (s) used to say:

Whoever makes salawaat on me to glorify me, raising my level and respecting me more, Allah will create from this word an angel who has one wing in the east and one wing in the west and his feet are under seven earths where you cannot reach, and his head is leaning under the Throne. Yaqoolullah `azza wa jall, salli `ala abdee kamaa salla `ala nabiyyee, ‘Make salawaat on My Servant as he made salawaat on My Prophet,’ until Judgment Day.

That is Islam and that is what we need. Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammad (s) al-faatih limaa ughliq, the One Who Opens What Is Closed. He opened in a hadith:

كنت كنزا مخفياً فأحببت أن أعرف فخلقت الخلق

Kuntu kanzan makhfiyyan fa ahbabtuhu an u`rafa fa khalaqtu ‘l-khalq.

I was a Hidden Treasure (and) I wanted to be known, so I created Creation. (Hadith Qudsi)

What did Allah create before anything? All of you know that He created the Light of the Prophet (s). He wanted to be known, not to you, but to this one: “The one to whom I gave from My Light, the one to whom I said, ‘Koonee Muhammad fa saara Muhammad.’ I took one handful of My Light and said to it, ‘Be Muhammad!’ and it was Muhammad.”

Al-Hafizh as-Sakhawi (q), one of the greatest saints, said that a poor lady came to Hasan al-Basri (q), one of the great `ulama and a Sufi, and said, “My daughter died at a young age and I miss her. What do I have do to see her in a dream?” She wanted to see her daughter out of love. If she wanted to see her daughter out of love, then what about us seeing the Prophet (s) out of love? That is why awliyaullah forget about everything, because for them everything is love of the Prophet (s)! May Allah dress us with their lights, that is what we need.

So Sayyidina Hasan (q) said to her, “After Salaat al-`Isha pray four raka`ats, and in every raka`at recite Surat al-Fatihah and Surat at-Takathur one time, and when you are done lean on a mattress or on the floor and make salawaat on the Prophet (s) until you sleep. Inshaa-Allah, you will see your daughter.”

So out of love she did that and she saw her daughter. Is that nice? Until here it is nice. She saw that her daughter was in punishment and torture, and dressed with qatraan, coal tar. She said, “I saw that her dress was from coal tar, burning her and her hands and feet were chained tightly.” She was so upset, she came out of that dream and ran to Hasan al-Basri and related to him what she had seen. He said to her, “Give sadaqa in Allah's Way and inshaa-Allah your daughter will be freed, and Allah will forgive her.” That night Hasan al-Basri slept and saw in his dream as if he was in a huge heavenly paradise, with no resemblance like it on earth. That is awliyaullah; they don't like to see visions like that. So in that nice garden there was a very beautiful lady sitting and on her head was a crown of light.

She said to him, “O Hasan! Do you know me?” How did she know him?

He said, “How do I know you?”

She said, “You know me very well. I am the daughter of that lady you ordered to make salawaat until she sleeps.”

Hasan said to her, “”But your mother said something different, that she saw you in punishment in a dream.”

She said, “That is correct, I was in punishment.”

He asked, “How did you reach that level?”

She said, “There were 70,000 ladies like myself and we were being punished in that place of Hellfire as my mother described to you. One of the pious men passed in front of us and saw us, and he made salawaat on the Prophet (s), and then said, ‘Yaa Rabb! I am making salawaat on the Prophet (s) and gifting it to these ladies.’”

So that is the difference between us and a wali. The wali’s du`a is accepted immediately; otherwise, they would not see what people cannot see and hear what people cannot hear. Our du`as are kept in a safety bank by the Prophet (s) and at the time of death he will open it for us.

Al-Hafizh as-Sakhawi (q) mentioned:

In the time of Bani Israel there was one person that transgressed against everything. He didn’t keep any Shari`ah and had no imaan and may have killed people and was doing all kinds of wrong. When he died, they threw him in a well and then Allah (swt) revealed to Sayyidina Musa (a), “Today one of my saints has died. Go and pray on him and bury him as I forgave him.” Sayyidina Musa (a) asked, “Why did you forgive him? He was a gangster.”Allah (swt) replied, “One day he opened the Tawraat and found the name of the Prophet (s), and he recited salawaat on him, and for that I forgave him.”

So recite after me: Allahumma salli `alaa sayyidinaa Muhammadini 'l-faatihi limaa ughliq, wa 'l-khaatimi limaa sabaq, naasiri 'l-haqqi bi 'l-haqq, wa 'l-haadi ilaa siraatika 'l-mustaqeem, wa `alaa aalihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdaarihi 'l-`azheem.

Read that after `Isha. It is important to compile evidence, because people say, "How do you know?" We know by putting together what awliyaullah said with what scholars said to know how important the Prophet (s) is in our life! To make tea you must use tea leaves. The cup may be full of water, but you need to put these tea leaves inside. Your cup is ready as you have the Light of the Prophet (s) in you. Allah (swt) didn't create creation directly, He said kun fayakoon, “‘Be!’ And it is.”

Allah (swt) also said:

وإعلموا أن فيكم رسول الله

W`alamoo anna feekum rasoolullaah.

And know Allah's Messenger is within you. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:7)

Allah created the Light of the Prophet (s) from His Own Light, when He took one handful of Light and said to it, "Be Muhammad!" and created us from that Light. So the Light is there, but for the light to flow in you, you need the right recipient. If you put tea leaves in tepid or cold water, will they brew tea? No, you have to put tea leaves in hot water, which you get by boiling. So if your heart is not boiling with love of the Prophet (s), that Light will not open. That love of the Prophet (s) must be boiling in hearts of human beings, who will then receive that Light, but those whose hearts are not boiling will not receive it. The Light is there, you only need to ignite it and the key is salawaat on the Prophet (s)!

There are some people, for example, one person came to me yesterday and said, “I fasted Thursday and it was very hot, 100 degrees, and then came Sunday and I fasted it and said, ‘Monday is coming, let me fast.’” Then he fasted Monday in this hot weather, and that night he saw the Prophet (s) and he now wants to fast all of Sha`baan since that happened to him! You don't know. That person's heart was boiling with fasting. So you know what Allah (swt) will reward you. So now we say, “Ash-hadu laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasoolullah.”

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
