Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,
nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.
Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. The Prophet (s) said any `amal or thing or association that you do without saying “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem,” is cut down, there is no progress in it. So whenever you have to recite, read, give lecture or advice, eat or drink, go in or out of the house, go in the car, or do anything, you must say “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.” If you don't, that `amal will stop as it is, it will not grow. We need our `amal to grow, in ascension always, especially our `ibadah.
Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q), the 39th Master on The Naqshbandi Golden Chain, used to say, “Allah perfected for many heavenly years when Allah created the Reality, that Noor of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). No one knows what kind of Noor that is, it is private to the Prophet (s), only he (s) knows the Source of that Noor, “al-Noor al-Muhammadi.” When Allah created that Noor, He placed it in Bahr al-Qudrah, in The Ocean of Power, and that Noor was turning every 500 years, five times. Meaning, that Noor was continuously turning for 2,500 heavenly years, and that Noor will continue to turn up to the Day of Judgment, producing sources of light that are different for every person in Ummat an-Nabi (s). When those 2,500 heavenly years were gone, Allah revealed to the Prophet (s) the meaning of the Hadith:
أدبني ربي فأحسن تأديبي
My Lord perfected my good manners and conduct. (Ibn `Asakir)
“Allah perfected my soul, Allah perfected me in the best kind of good manners.” So after that turning for 2,500 years the first thing he (s) said was, “Allah perfected me,” so that’s why they say that you must have adab with everything: to respect people, humanity, Awliyaullah, Sahaabah (r), to love and respect the Prophet (s) and Allah (swt). Respect is not just to say, “I respect/I love Allah,” when you respect Allah you do what Allah wants you to do. When you do what Allah wants you to, then you are inheriting from the secret of the adab of Prophet (s). That’s why “Adabanee rabbee fa’ahsana taa'deebee,” means that Allah perfected the Prophet (s) and perfected him highly, for us to know that Allah perfected and honored him with that respect. When someone has adab, He will take the `amal with respect, He will not throw it in our face. That means our `amal can be thrown in our face:
وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاء مَّنثُورًا
And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did (in this life) and We shall make such deeds as floating dust scattered about. (Surat al-Furqan, 25:23)
We have to be careful if that `amal is not perfected and is not for Allah but for ourself, so we have to be careful to tell our nafs that every `amal is for Allah and His Prophet (s). That’s why ita`atullah is wajib, obligatory. When they give you orders in the army, you have to carry them out, you cannot say “no,” as you must respect the leaders and do what they ask. In the course of life, the `ibaadullah have to obey whatever order comes, whether you like it or not. Allah says:
O those who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows are an abomination of Satan's handwork: stay away from it in order that you may prosper. (5:90)
He counted many `amal which are from Shaytan and you have to be away from them; if you do them then you have a problem. May Allah perfect us.
I have only created jinn and men so that they may worship Me. No sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me. I do not want want provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me. Truly Allah is the One Who provides, Possessor of firm strength. (51:56-58)
“I did not create jinn and human beings except to worship Me.” So you have to sit at home and worship. Some might say the tafseer of the ayah is different, but in our way that worship is: eight hours of `ibadah, eight hours of socializing with family and working, and eight hours of sleeping. These three will be considered `ibadah if you do them perfectly, even you sleep you will be rewarded, because you are sleeping to get power in order to do your awraad and `ibadah and to work to provide for your family. If you do that, then you are under that khitaab, wa maa khalaqtu ’l-jinna wa ’l-insa illa li ya`budoon. Then you will be under that Reality of, “I don’t want rizq from them, I will provide everyone rizq, but I want them to understand and believe.”
May Allah bless Grandshaykh `Abdullah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani (q) and all mashayikh around the world, as they guide their followers to what they need of this life and the Next. Sayyidina Khwaja `Abdul-Khaliq al-Ghujdawani (q) had one highly respected mureed who was very rich and used his wealth for good. When Sayyida Maryam (a) was in her prayer niche, Allah provided her directly by sending angels:
كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا زَكَرِيَّا الْمِحْرَابَ وَجَدَ عِندَهَا رِزْقًا ۖ قَالَ يَا مَرْيَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
Whenever Zakariyya entered her niche he found provision with her. He said, “O Maryam, from where do you have this?” She said, “It is from Allah.” Truly Allah provides whoever He wills with no account. (Surat Ali Imraan, 3:37)
Sayyidina Zakariyya (a) was asking from where that provision came. She said, “It came from Allah, angels are bringing that food to me.”Sayyidina Zakariyya (a) was stunned and he was a prophet. Sayyida Maryam (a) was not a prophet (except according to a few scholars), but she was siddiqah, a veracious servant of Allah. He was stunned at what happened. Whenever he entered he found rizq there. It’s from, “I will provide everyone.” That’s why, laa tukthir li hammik, maa quddir yakoon, Allahu ’l-muqaddir wa `aalam shu`oon, alladhee li ghayrik laa yasil ilayk wa ‘lladhee yasub lak haasil ladayk, don’t worry too much about your problem: what Allah decided is decided. Allah is The One that wrote it, He is The One that planned it and the people are His subjects.
Don't be too sad, whatever is written for you will be; not even the bite of food is meant for you if not written! Sometimes there is a bite of food you like and want, but when you extend your spoon, someone else takes it before you. What do you do? Allah wanted that rizq for that person, not for you, He is The One Who Gives, we are the Creation, all of us are His `abd and He does with us whatever He wants!
Allah huwa ‘l-`Atiyy, He is the One that gives, wa nahnu al-khalaa’iq, kulluna `abeed wa ‘l-ilaahu feena yaf’alu maa yureed, we and the Creation all of us are His `abeed His servants, He created us, He wrote what we need to do in dunya, how much we need to eat and drink and how old we will be.
Awliyaullah don't count their life by years but rather by moments, as they are always thinking about death. Therefore, the advice for their students is that they should meditate every 24 hours for even one or two minutes to remember, “I am going to die at any moment.” That will save them from Shaytan, Iblees. You must remember before you are about to do something wrong, “I might die at any moment, Sayyid Malik al-Mawt (a) might come and then I will be asked and be responsible for what I have done.” So Awliyaullah recommend to remember death four times in 24 hours. That is why it is a Sunnah of the Prophet (s) to lie down briefly between the Sunnat al-Fajr and Fard al-Fajr to ponder death. From that, Awliyaullah recommend to lie on the right side on our prayer mat and think, “I will die.”
Awliyaullah do not remember death only four times a day, but every moment. Like the reporter who reads the news from the teleprompter, they read what is written there and it is moving. SubhaanAllah, if that is the invention of human beings, to get these letters in an electronic way that you see, what do you think about Awliyaullah, can't they read your heart like that? In dunya, doctors read an MRI, ultrasound, X-rays, but when it is said that Awliya can see and hear all of these from a distance, some people object. Like a laser, they are curing many things: Awliya look with the laser Allah gave to their eyes, as He (swt) said to Prophet (s):
My servant does not cease to approach Me through voluntary worship until I will love him. When I love him, I will become the ears with which he hears, the eyes with which he sees, the hand with which he acts, and the legs with which he walks (and other versions include, “and the tongue with which he speaks.”). (Hadith Qudsi, Bukhari)
Beware of the vision of the Believer, for he sees with the Light of Allah. (Tirmidhi)
He looks with the Lights Allah gave him, which are like lasers that break everything and reach their goal. “I will be the eyes that they can see with…” so why are we not seeing? Because we are not remembering death. The Awliya can see everything transparently; they can read the hearts of the Believers and the non-believers. We only see a block of matter, but he sees that person as a subtle form and sees his follower from East to West. Allah will give, and when He gives He doesn’t ask me or you, He just gives! He is The Creator and Commander: He does what He wants! We have to remember that if we attempt to do something bad, maybe the Angel of Death might come and take our soul during that bad act. We must think, “How then will I be in front of Allah (swt), punished or not?”
The Prophet (s) said to Sayyida `Ayesha (r), “Make du`a that Allah does not judge you, ” and she is the wife of the Prophet (s) who gave her life for him, whom he loved her the most, she and his daughter Sayyida Fatimah az-Zahra (r). Will Allah judge her? She is the wife of Prophet (s)! But Prophet (s) was concerned and wanted to be sure that she is perfected. If Prophet (s) is telling our Mother of Heavens, Mother of All Mu’mins, Umm al-Mu’mineen, to ask not to be judged, what about us? And if we are going to be judged, what will happen to us? Awliyaullah are under a heavy responsibility to carry their followers to a safe shore, but afraid because they carry that load on their shoulders. So don't be a shaykh, don't be a shepherd, it’s better to be a sheep. Don’t say, “I know, I know, I know,” trying to please your ego, because you don’t know anything!
Above every knower is a (higher) knower. (Surah Yusuf, 12:76)
Am I saying something wrong? I say what they send to me. So he said, “Don’t sleep on silk.” Now we sleep on silk mattresses, maybe in the future they will be made of gold; now mattresses have temperature settings, memory, coolants, heaters, while the Prophet (s) slept on a straw mattress. How was his back? His mattress left marks on his body, but we are not happy with our mattresses. Today they are selling mattresses for US $10,000! Let them try to sleep on a mattress of straw, tibn, that is better.
So the Prophet (s) said to Sayyida `Ayesha (r):
من حوسب عذب
(Yaa `Ayesha!) Who will be judged will be punished for sure. (Bukhari)
Allah will bring up a sin that was hidden. Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, is As-Saadiq, a Trustworthy One among his people and followers, and well known in Russia, Daghestan and Rashadiyyah, where Daghestani emigrants settled in Turkey, a village outside Istanbul. There was a good imam there who gave the khutbah and lectures that made people afraid; no basheera, good tidings, only nadheeran, warning. The Prophet (s) warned and also gave good tidings, but when the Ummah speaks amongst each other, they must give only good tidings as warning is given only by Prophet (s). You can advise people, but you cannot warn people or it means you see yourself as better than them. When you warn someone, you must first apply it to yourself and then warn others. The Prophet (s) said to Sayyida `Ayesha, man hoosib u`adhdhib, “Whoever is judged will be punished,” because Allah will bring that one’s forgotten `amal that is not accepted and will judge very heavily, as happened to that imam in Rashadiyyah.
One morning, that imam warned his followers after Fajr prayer, saying, “Allah is going to punish you! You are sinning and not worthy to go to Paradise, you are going to Hellfire!” His lecture made people run away, so there was confusion among them. That night the imam came at Fajr time, but covered his face, only showing his eyes and nose. He said, “For the seventy years I have been with you, I have warned you from Allah (swt), but tonight I received something that made me now say to you that I will not warn you any more, I will only tell you about Allah’s Mercy, which is overwhelming.”
My Mercy embraces all things, therefore I shall ordain it for those who ward off (evil) and pay the poor due, and those who believe Our Revelations. (Surat al-A`raaf, 7:156)
“When I was between sleep and waking, I saw a vision and a voice said, ‘Bring that shaykh to be questioned!’ Then an angel approached.” Allah wanted to question the shaykh, who did not see Allah, but heard an angelic voice and saw the angel. When he was present, Allah said to him, “Warning people is reserved for Prophet (s) only, and only giving advice is for others. Why have you put My mercy aside and for seventy years only warned people about My punishment, instead of pouring My love into their hearts? Why are you teaching them to run from Me in fear? Why did you not show them love and mercy so they come nearer? This is why I am sending you to Hellfire!” The imam said a huge flame from Hellfire singed his beard, eyebrows and face. He awoke and no longer found a beard on his face, it had been burned! Don’t interfere with Allah’s teaching: Allah will do whatever He wants, so don’t say, “This is not true.” We believe. The stories of shuyookh are full of wisdoms that we cannot understand, but they understand and Prophet (s), whom Allah brought to Mi`raaj, understands the most!
So the Prophet (s) said to Sayyida `Ayesha, man hoosib u`dhdhib, “Who is judged will be punished for sure.” That is the specialty of the Prophet (s): to warn. So this applies to us, and we must ask after every prayer, “O Allah, judge us with Your mercy! We are asking You to forgive us and provide us with what You like for us.” When you struggle with your ego and begin to enter the Divine Presence, then you begin to understand the real meaning of every Hadith of the Prophet (s). Until then, we have to struggle.
Allah did not create Jinn and Mankind except to worship Him. “I don’t need any provision from them, I am The Provider: they cannot provide for themselves, I will provide them.” Everyone’s provision, rizq, is over their heads like a rope connected to the source of sustenance that Allah assigned them and from a particular place that rizq comes down that rope of sustenance to his head, and he will see it in dunya. If you make sadaqa and help the one with a short rope by giving to the poor, Allah will reward you since you gave a gift to that poor guy; He will reward your generosity and that rope will descend to your head so much that hablu ‘l-rizq laa yanqati`, the rope is never cut and always descending on your head. Allah will open doors that you don’t know where it is coming from. You only have to be certain that Allah will provide for you.
So we began the suhbah with a story about Sayyidina Khwaja `Abdul-Khaliq al-Ghujdawani (q), who had a very rich, devoted mureed who was ordered into seclusion, and what happened we will mention next time inshaa-Allah, we will speak on that story of rizq to see how Allah provides His servants.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq. It is simple English for people to understand. We have the minimum English and I am getting old now so I am talking less, quiet, hiding my voice, so forgive me and pray for me, all of you who are seeing us now and later inshaa-Allah. May Allah bless you all. Allah is ar-Razzaq, The Provider, so don't worry about your rizq: He will provide for your homes, your mouth, your children, your family, but keep confident in His Provision and that when He promises, He gives. He says, “I don’t want anything from them except worship, I will provide for them with everything.” May Allah provide for us from two oceans of knowledge: the ocean of spiritual knowledge and the ocean of physical knowledge and the ocean of physical food and the ocean of spiritual food.
May Allah protect you and us, and may Allah bring happiness and peacefulness to this universe, because what is now appearing is an indication of the Signs of the Last Days, like currently Europe dividing and dividing and dividing. May Allah make peace and unity everywhere.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
