Importance of Reading Holy Qur’an

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

5 April 2013  Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

(Opening du`a of khutbah.)

Allah (swt) gave us many ways to be saved on the Day of Resurrection. First, He gave Sayyidina Muhammad (s) shafa`ah, as the Prophet (s) said:

?????? ???? ??????? ?? ????

Shafa`tee li ahl al-kabaa’ir min ummattee.

My intercession is for big sinners on Judgment Day.  (Imam Ahmad)

“My shafa`ah is for the sinners and great sinners of my ummah.” When he says, “Shafa`atee li ahl al-kabaa’ir min ummattee,” when he says, “kabaa'ir,” it means saghaa’ir and kabaa’ir, the small sins and the big sins. It means he involved everyone to be under the shafa`ah of the Prophet (s), and this is an honor!

???????? ?????????? ????? ?????

Wa laqad karamnaa Bani Adam.

We have honored the Children of Adam. (Surat al-'Israa, 17:70)

Allah (swt) is honoring Ummat an-Nabi (s). To be under the shafa`ah of Prophet (s) means to go to Paradise by the intercession of Prophet (s). There are also other means that Allah (swt) has given to Ummat an-Nabi (s) that they can do in their lives. When they are doing sins and mistakes and they repent, Allah gives them higher levels. So Imam Shafi`i (q) was using other means, because yashfa` li man yaqra’uhu, al-Qur’anu shaafi`un, “The Qur’an will intercede for anyone who reads it.”

Today people say, “We don't know Arabic.” Okay, but that is not an excuse because you have time to eat and you don’t say, “I don’t have a mouth to eat.” No, you have a mouth to eat and you are eating, so you cannot say to Allah (swt), “I don’t know Arabic.” Learn Arabic! Learn at least how to read and Allah (swt) will give you more than someone who already knows Arabic. We said it many times that even if you don’t know how to read, open the Holy Qur’an and pass your fingers under the aayaaoot, beginning from Surat al-Fatihah to the end, and look at the commentaries there to see what these aayaat mean. Pass your fingers as there is light coming from verses of Holy Qur'an. There are 6,666 ayah of Holy Qur’an and every ayah consists of many words, every word has letters in it and every letter in these words has light in it, so don’t lose that light as Allah is giving us this light for free!

What did Imam Shafi`i (q), one of the Four Righteous Imams, use to do? He used to recite in Holy Ramadan, besides his every day reading, he used to complete the Holy Qur’an every day two times from beginning to end. Wa kaana ash-Shafi`i yaktumu fee ramadaana sitteena khatma, “In Ramadan he used to complete the Holy Qur’an sixty times!” not like us, if we finish khatmatun waahida, one completion in Ramadan we are very happy! Every 24 hours he completed two full readings of the Holy Qur’an!

What did the Prophet (s) say about Holy Qur'an?

«?????? ??????? ?????? ????? ??? ??????? ???? ?????? ?? ?? ????? ?????? ???????? ??????? ?????? ??? ????? ?????? ????? ????? ?????? ?????? ??? ??? ???????» ???? ?????? ???? ????? ?????? ???? ????

As-siyaamu wa ‘l-qur’aanu yashfa`aani li ’l-`abdi yawm al-qiyaamah. Yaqoolu ‘s-siyaam ay Rabbu, man`atuhu min at-ta`aam wa ’sh-sharaabi bi ‘n-nahaar fa shaffi`nee feehi. Wa yaqoolu ‘l-qur’aan man`atahu an-nawma bi ‘l-layl fa shafi`yanee feehi, qaala fa yashfi`aan.

Abdullah ibn `Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (s) said, “Fasting and the Holy Qur’an will intercede for a servant on the Day of Judgment. The fasts will say, ‘My Lord! I prevented him (or her) from food and desires so let me intercede,’ and the Holy Qur’an will say, ‘I prevented him (or her) from sleeping at night so let me intercede,’ then they will intercede.”  (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

He (s) said that fasting, and he didn’t say Ramadan, as-siyaamu wa ‘l-qur’aanu yashfa`aani lil-`abdi yawm al-qiyaamah, Siyaam, fasting, and reading Qur’an will intercede for you on the Day of Judgment.” Allahu Akbar!

That means they are going to talk, fasting is going to talk, saying, “Yaa Rabbee! This person fasted that day for You, so I am asking shafa`ah, intercession for that person’s fasting.”

The Holy Qur’an will say, “Yaa Rabbee! That one read the Holy Qur’an for You, ta`zheeman laka, exalting You and glorifying You, forgive him.”

Will Allah say “no”? The Holy Qur’an is Allah's Words and if Allah’s Words say, “Yaa Rabbee! Forgive him,” His Own Words, will Allah not forgive?

???? ??? ????????? ????????? ?????????? ????? ??????????? ??? ?????????? ??? ????????? ??????? ????? ??????? ???????? ?????????? ???????? ??????? ???? ?????????? ??????????

Qul yaa `ibadiya ’Lladheena asrafoo `alaa anfusihim laa taqnatoo min rahmatillaahi inna Allaaha yaghfiru ’dh-dhunooba jamee`an innahu huwa ’l-ghafooru ‘r-raheem.

Say, "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, for Allah forgives all sins for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat al-Zumar, 39:53)

(These are) Allah’s Words in the Holy Qur’an, that Allah (swt) will forgive all your sins! Don’t lose hope, but open the Qur’an and keep it on the shelves to read it, not to lock it. Are you reading the Holy Qur'an? Yes, it might be. Some people read, some people don’t read, and some people open it and read the English, but English is not the Qur’an, the Arabic is the Qur’an and the English gives you the meaning. So for those who don’t know yet, pass your fingers under the aayaat, as they will have an intention to know and to learn, so they can pass their fingers under the aayaat.

Yaqoolu ‘s-siyaam ay Rabbu, man`atuhu min at-ta`aam wa sh-sharaabi bi ‘n-nahaar fa shaffi`nee feeh. Siyaam will say, “O Allah! You prevented him when he made the niyyah to fast for You this day.” You prevented him, which means he knows that when he fasts it means no food. “You prevented him from eating food and drinking water. Give me that person so I will intercede for him, fa shaffi`nee feehi.”

And the Holy Qur’an will say, wa yaqoolu ‘l-qur’aan man`atahu an-nawma bi ‘l-layl, “O Allah! You prevented him from sleeping at night, as he is reading the Holy Qur’an, fa shafi`nee feeh, fa yashfi`aan, so let me intercede for him.”

What did the Prophet (s) say? “Fa yashfa`aan,” which means Allah (swt) gives them the authority to intercede, so finished, period! The one who is fasting and the one who is reading the Holy Qur’an, Allah will order the fast and Holy Qur’an on the Day of Judgment when they ask, “Yaa Rabbee! Let us intercede,” He will say, “Intercede!” and they will intercede, as the Prophet (s) said to us that they intercede.

So it means what do we have to do now? Whenever there is an important day in the calendar, in the year, fast that day, no problem. Whenever you have time during the day or at night, open the Holy Qur’an; even if you don’t know how to read it’s okay, just continue to play a recording of the Qur’an. This is a masjid, so keep the Holy Qur’an running (play the recording) in it day and night, 24 hours. Why not? You go, you come, you enter masaajid, but you don’t hear the Holy Qur’an is running. Masaajid are for dhikrullah, for Holy Qur’an, for hadith, not for socializing! You can go somewhere else and socialize as much as you like, but here you must always have Qur’an running, 24 hours.

And Allah (swt), with this technology, gave us an easy way to have Qur’an playing 24 hours in a masjid. Let people who don’t know how to read the Qur’an learn, to hear at least the words of the Holy Qur’an. If you ask children or their parents, “Which school is he in?” the parents say, “He is in this school or that school; pray for him, he has a test.” Did they say one time, “Our children are in that school,” and did they ask the school if they can teach them the Holy Qur’an? No, because there is no teaching of Qur’an in these schools, but there are Muslim schools that can teach you Qur’an. If you don’t have a school, bring your children to learn Qur’an as there are volunteers who teach the Holy Qur’an.

`An Abu Umaamah (r) qaal, faqultu yaa Rasoolullah, murnee bi `amalin yadkhulanee al-Jannah. Qaala `alayka bi ‘s-sawm fa innahu laa `idda lahu. Thumma ataytahu thaaniya. Qaala `alayka bi ‘s-sawm.

Abu Umaamah (r) said, “I came to the Prophet and I said, ‘O Prophet! Order me to do something that makes me enter Paradise.’ The Prophet (s) said, “Fast, as there is nothing heavier than that in the balance, so fast and you will enter Paradise.’ So I came a second time and the Prophet (s) said, ‘Fast and you will enter Paradise.’” (Ahmad, an-Nisaa’i, al-Haakim)

Abu Umaamah (r) passed by the Prophet (s) and said to him, murnee bi `amalin yadkhulanee al-Jannah, Yaa Rasoolullah! Order me an `amal, something I will do that will take me to Paradise.” What did Prophet (s) say? `Alayka bi ‘s-sawm, “Go and fast. Fasting lets you to go to Paradise.” Fa innahu laa `idda lahu,  “There is nothing heavier than the sawm.”

Allah (swt) said:

????? ?? ???? ????? ??

As-sawmu lee wa anaa ajzee bih.

Fasting is for Me and I will reward it. (Hadith Qudsi)

Ramadan is coming, Rajab is coming soon, Sha`baan is coming!

Continuing the hadith: Thumma ataytahu ath-thaaniya, “Then I passed by him (s) another time and he told me, ‘`Alayka bi ‘s-siyaam.’ He told me (I didn’t ask him, he told me directly), ‘Yaa Abu Umaamah, fast!"

O Muslims! The importance of the Holy Qur’an is great, but we don’t know the value of the Holy Qur'an and we don’t know the value of siyaam. These have significance... Look, there are 6,666 aayaat of Holy Qur’an. The numbers of aayaats, if you add them all together, what does it give you? 6 + 6 = 12 and (the other) 6 + 6 = 12, 12 is 1 + 2 = 3, and the other 12 is 1 + 2 = 3, and 3 + 3 = 6. Look at the secret numbers in Holy Qur’an: 6,666 aayaat, and if you add the numbers it comes to 6.

In six days: Allah created the Earth in two days, and in four days He wrote the provisions of everyone on Earth, so in six days (total). The Qur’an has 114 surahs. Add the numbers: 1 + 1 = 2 and 2 + 4 = 6, once again! There are secrets there and don’t ask what these secrets are, like when you go to your car and you ignite the starter and a spark comes and the car runs, these are secrets that you pass through in the Holy Qur’an and Allah will ignite the light in your heart! Allah will ignite the forgiveness in your heart and Allah will make or will order everyone who has permission to make shafa`ah on the Day of Judgment (so that) you will get it, especially shafa`at an-Nabi (s)!

Qur’an is Allah’s Words, it’s not anyone’s words! May Allah (swt) make us to love the Holy Qur’an more, to read it more and to fast more.
