As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
It’s been two weeks. We are grieving our loss. May Allah (swt) raise Mawlana Shaykh Hisham higher and higher. May Allah (swt) bless us with their blessings and barakah. Inshaa-Allah, we are following their footsteps.
What did Awliyaullah do? I heard this from my teachers. What is the sweetest thing in this world and what can a servant bring to the Presence of Allah (swt)? What is the best thing that a servant can bring to the Presence of Allah (swt) and the presence of Rasoolullah (s)? The sweetest thing in this world is love and the best thing you can bring to the Divine Presence is Muhabbatu ‘Llah and Muhabbatu ‘r-Rasoolullah (s), the love of Allah (swt) and Rasoolullah (s). The one who can transfer love to the hearts of people is accepted in the Divine Presence and is pleased with and is accepted in the presence of Rasoolullah (s) and Rasoolullah (s) is pleased with him.
The duty of Awliyaulllah is to transfer the love they have in their hearts to those who come to them. The shaykh, the murshid, the Qutb or whatever you want to call them, Waliyullah, their way is the way of love. Their way is to transfer the love they have in their hearts to the hearts of the attendees. The life of the heart is love. Your heart lives by love. The heart that does not have love is dead.
The way to Rasoolullah (s), the way to Allah (swt) is through the love that is in the heart of the Wali, the saint, that transfers from his heart to your heart. That is the job of Waliyullah. Their work was what? To make you love Allah (swt) and Rasoolullah (s). Inshaa-Allah, we are on that way. The best thing you can bring forth to the Divine Presence is the love you have acquired in this world. That is the life of the heart. Without that love, your heart is not alive, it’s dead.
What causes the death of the heart? It can be summarized into a few factors. The first reason for the death of the heart is, kilatu ‘l-himmah li `amali ‘l-Akhirah. No himmah for the work of Akhirah. You have no drive for the `amal of Akhirah. You have a weak drive for the `amal that will make you reach Akhirah. Human beings have the weakest drive in their hearts and some of them have no drive. They can spend their time from morning until evening running after dunya but if you tell them to pray three raka`ats for Maghrib or four raka`ats of Isha, they can’t. They have no himmah or want or time for the `amal of Akhirah. If you see somebody who says, “I don’t have any love to Rasoolullah (s) or to Allah (swt) or Awliyaullah,” that means they have neglected the `amal of Akhirah. Make more `amal for Akhirah. Be busy with that, otherwise your heart will die.
The second is, atharu ‘r-rida makhlooqeen `alaa rida ‘l-Khaliq “They have preferred what other men will say about them more than that Allah (swt) is pleased with them.” For example, I prefer that Meziane likes me so I will do what he likes and forget Allah (swt). The work of so many people is to please others, to be high in the eyes of others, to gain the respect of other human beings just like them even if it means going against the rida of Allah (swt), even if it means going against the rida of Rasoolullah (s). That makes your heart lose the love and it dies.
The third is that your body has become a captive for your desires. The desires have taken hold of your body. Your body is just to fulfill your desires. You use your body for whatever will give you pleasure.
The fourth is that they think they will live forever and their day might be tomorrow. I’ll let you in on a secret. When I used to work back in the days, I used to think I would retire in the Bahamas at 60. I’m 53 and I’m retired in Fenton Shareef. Adam, you’re next. You are hoping for anything and everything. “I’ll be the richest man on earth 30 years from now and I will be on an island in the Caribbean.” Guess what? Plans are different. You are planning for 30 years from now and you might make it to tomorrow. We got a message that someone is in the hospital on his last breath. May Allah (swt) allow that person to go on with ease and comfort and give patience to his children, his wife and his family.
The fifth is they follow their temptations and opinions and they leave the Sunnah and Qur’an. Nowadays people give you their opinions and it has nothing to do with the Qur’an or the Sunnah. They say, “But I think...” They have followed their opinions, whatever that is. That causes corruption in your heart and the love of Allah (swt) disappears from the heart. Mashaa-Allah, so many Muslims, men and women, say that all the time, “But according to me...,” “The way I see it.”
The sixth and last reason people have lost that love in their hearts and corruption has entered is because they have found some mistakes of the Salaf, the good ones, and they take it as an excuse not to mention their good deeds. They found one thing that they did wrong by mistake because the true mu’min, the true Waliyullah is somebody that when he does something it is according to the Qur’an and Sunnah. That is the characteristic of Waliyullah. They do their best to find the best way to go. If they make a mistake, Allah (swt) will reward them. If they do it right, Allah (swt) will give them two rewards, as Rasoolullah (s) said. They never did anything that was against the Qur’an and Sunnah according to their understanding. Some of them found some mistakes made by Waliyullah.
We are not like Anbiya. We can make mistakes for a reason. If Allah (swt) wants you to make a mistake, He will steal your mind. It happened to Adam (a). He forgot.
وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِىَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُۥ عَزْمًا
Wa laqad ahidna illa Adama min qablu fa nasiya wa lam najid lahu azma
We had already, beforehand, taken the covenant of Adam, but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve. (Surah Taha, 20:115)
We have given Adam and We have agreed with Adam on something. There was a contract, an agreement but he forgot. So, He takes the mind away so that Waliyullah or that `abd can do something by mistake because there’s a hikmah, a wisdom out of it.
The sixth thing is that they look at Waliyullah and find one or two or three things that they have done by mistake and they say, “This is our excuse. This guy was bad.” All the good things that they have done are forgotten.
If such things enter the heart of a human being, it will rob you from the love of Allah (swt) and instead of Muhabbatu ‘Llah, it will instill hawaa, the egoistic desires and temptation. Inshaa-Allah people can understand. They can go back and see the six different ways that Allah (swt) does not like you to follow so the love of Allah (swt) and Rasoolullah (s) can enter your heart from that Waliyullah. May Allah (swt) forgive all of us.
There was a Waliyullah by the name of Dhu ’n-Nun al-Masri (q). He was travelling in the mountains of Lebanon. He saw a pomegranate tree and he desired it. He took one, opened it and took a bite. It was sour, so he left it. He continued to walk and he saw a man on the ground covered with bees. He thought he needed help, so he said, “As-salaamu `alaykum.”
The man on the ground said, “Wa `alaykum as-salam, yaa Dhu ’n-Nun.”
“How did you know my name?”
“Nothing is hidden from the one who knows Allah (swt).”
From Allah, verily nothing is hidden on earth or in the Heavens. (Surat Aali `Imran, 3:5)
Nothing can hide from Allah (swt) in the Heavens and earth. Everything is known.
هُوَ ٱلْأَوَّلُ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرُ وَٱلظَّـٰهِرُوَٱلْبَاطِنُ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
Huwa ’l-Awwalu wa ’l-Aakhiru wa ’zh-Zhaarhiru wa’l-Baatinu wa huwa bi kulli shay’in `aleem.
He is the First and the Last, the Evident and the Hidden: and He has full knowledge of all things. (Surat Al-Hadid, 57:3)
Allah (swt) certainly knows everything. Allah (swt) can let Waliyullah know things that are unknown. He knew him and he said: “Nothing is hidden from the one who knows Allah (swt).”
He said, “Mashaa-Allah. I see you have something special with Allah (swt). You know my name and I’ve never met you. Why don’t you ask Allah (swt) to relieve you from these bees that are stinging you.”
“I also see that you have something with Allah (swt). Why don’t you ask Allah (swt) to relieve you from the desire of pomegranate. You will find the sting of your desire for pomegranate in Akhirah. Maybe you can find pleasure now but you will find it stinging in Akhirah. I find the pain of stinging bees only in dunya.”
One of them was following his desires and grabbed the pomegranate and one of them was aslam, in full submission to Allah (swt) if bees are on him or not. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, when you are in love and you are fully submitting to Allah (swt), you feel no pain. The heart of that man on the ground was full of love. The other man’s heart was full of desire. One was totally surrendering to Allah (swt) for whatever was happening to him of stinging and by that love in his heart, he was not feeling any pain. The other one’s heart was full of desires and he was feeling the pain because it was sour.
Check your heart. Is it full of desires and are you reaching out to what you desire? If you are reaching out to what you like to have then your heart is corrupt. If you are happy and submitting to what Allah is sending to you then your heart is, mashaa-Allah, on the right way. Inshaa-Allah, you can get more. Whoever is reaching out for desires will find that pain. Maybe not now but in Akhirah, the pain of hawa, the pain of shahwa. You will find that sting in Akhirah. But the one who is submitting, his heart is full of Divine Love and love of Rasoolullah (s) and Awliyaullah. No matter how many bee stings he gets, his heart is at peace. He is in submission.
Choose your way. Be like those whose hearts are full of love and submission to Allah (swt). Don’t allow that corruption to enter your heart because that will rob you from the love of Allah (swt). The biggest one is hawa, desires. If your heart is full of desires of this dunya, full of desires of how to be great in this dunya, how to be known in this dunya, how to be on top in this dunya, how to be rich in this dunya, how to have more of this dunya then you are following your desires. May Allah (swt) forgive us.
These are the stories of Awliyaullah. The true Waliyullah is the one who is submitting to the stings of the bees and he is happy. He knows the pain only in dunya. There is no pain in Akhirah. But those who are reaching out to their desires are not happy. They are unsatisfied. Astaghfirullah. Allah (swt) knows best. May Allah (swt) keep us on the footsteps of our shuyookh.
Gain that love of Allah (swt). Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, no murshid will gather the hearts of the mureeds without love. Only by love can the murshid gather the hearts of the mureeds. Nothing else can gather the hearts of the mureeds. Have love in your heart and try to give it to others. May Allah (swt) give us from their love. Even one drop of love from the Ocean of Rasoolullah (s), from the Ocean of Awliyullah, is enough to flood the whole world with happiness. Try to get that. Try to reach that.
Don’t be qaleelu ‘l-himmah, Khan Sahab. Work for `amalu ‘l-Akhirah, enough working on cars. Work now in Tahajjud. Wake up for Tahajjud. All of us, enough working after 5. What are you going to do after 5? Go home. Rest. Eat. Spend time with your family. Pray `Isha. Sleep. Don’t watch anything after `Isha. Sleep. Wake up at 1 and be awake for Allah (swt). That’s the way of Awliyaullah, qiyamu ‘l-layl. Inshaa-Allah (swt), we can be from them.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
