Jumu`ah Khutbah
Translated from Arabic
(Khutbah starts at video minute 28:00)
The Prophet (s) said:
When ‘Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem’ descended from the clouds and fled to the East, the winds became still, the sea became high, the animals listened with their ears, devils were stoned and Allah swore by His Glory and Majesty that whenever His Name is mentioned on something, it must be blessed.
Man araada an yanjeehullaha min az-zabaaniyyat at-tisa`ata `ashara fal-yiqraa Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem fa-innahaa tisa`ata `ashara harfan wa khazanatau jahannam tisa`ata `ashara kamaa qaala allahu ta`alaa ‘`alayhaa tisa`ata `ashara’ fa-yaa`al Allahu ta`alaa bi-kull harfin minhaa junnatin ayy wiqaayatan min kulla waahin minhum bi-barakati Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem.
From ibn Mas`ud (r), it is related that the Prophet (s) said:
Whoever wishes that Allah will save him from the nineteen angels of torture in Hellfire should read “Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem”, which is made of of nineteen letters, each a protection from each one of them.
`an ibn `Abbas marfu`an anna al-mu`allim idhaa qaala li’s-sabiyy qul: Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, kutiballahu baraa’tun li’s-sabiyyin wa baraa’tun li-waalidayhi wa baraatun li ’l-mu`allimi min an-naar.
Ibn `Abbas (r) mentioned that Prophet (s) said:
If the teacher told the boy to write “Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem,” Allah will write for the boy, for the parents of the boy and for the teacher safety from Hellfire.
We say that we witness that there is only one Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!
(Du`a.) O Servants of Allah! Fear Allah in His orders and abstain from what He forbade.
Kullu amrin dhiy baalin lam yabdaa feehi bi-Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem fa huwa abtar.
The Prophet (s) said, “Any action which does not begin with ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’ is cut off; it has no continuity.” (Ahmad, al-Musnad)
Qaala rasoolullahi sall-Allahu `alayhi wa sallama man qara’a Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem kutib-allahu lahu bi-kull harfin arba`ti alaafin hasanat in wa mahaa `anhu arba`ti aalaaf sayyiatin wa rafa`a lahu arba`ti aalaf daraj.
The Prophet (s) said:
Whoever recites “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem,” Allah will write for him for each letter four-thousand good deeds and erase from him four-thousand sins and raise him four-thousand levels.
Here we see the greatness of Holy Qur’an, because Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem is from the verses of Holy Qur'an. Qur'an contains many surahs and especially Surah al-Baqara.
Ibn `Abbas (r) said, “The longest surah is al-Baqara and the shortest is al-Kawthar.” If you ask what is the wisdom that Surat al-Baqara is the greatest surah of Holy Qur'an after Fatihah, the answer will be because all the rules have been explained in Surat al-Baqara, examples and proofs have been given. No other surah contains what Surat al-Baqara contains and, therefore, it is called Fustaat al-Qur'an, “the city of Qur'an.”
Ibn al-`Arabi (r) said in the rulings of Qur’an Ahkam Al Qur’an, “I heard some of my shaykhs mention that in Surat al-Baqara are one-thousand orders, one-thousand prohibitions, one-thousand rulings, and one thousand reports.”
Due to the greatness of Surat al-Baqara, Ibn `Umar (r) spent eight years to memorize and learn it.
And as it has been mentioned in Allah’s Divine Speech (Holy Qur’an):
لولاك لما خلقت الأفلاك
Lawlaak lamaa khalaqt al-aflaak
(O Muhammad!) Were it not for you, I would not have created Creation.
