Jumu`ah Khutbah
As-salaamu `alaykum. [Opening du`a of khutbah.]
The Prophet (s) said:
ان بين يدي الساعة اياما ينزل فيها الجهل ويرفع فيها العلم ويكثر فيها الهرج والمرج
Among the Last Days there will be a time when ignorance will descend, knowledge will be removed, and killing and destruction will be everywhere. (Bukhari)
Today we praise technology, but it leads to ignorance. Manufacturers push technology by advertising computers, DVDs and new products, also mature content, all of which is accessible to children and adults. Allah knows what they are watching on the Internet.
إِنَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّامًا يَنْزِلُ فِيهَا الْجَهْلُ , وَيُرْفَعُ فِيهَا الْعِلْمُ , وَيَكْثُرُ فِيهَا الْهَرْجُ " . قَالَ : قُلْنَا : وَمَا الْهَرْجُ ؟ قَالَ : الْقَتْلُ
The Prophet said, “Just before the Last Hour there will be a time in which ignorance descends, knowledge is lifted up, and harj is everywhere.” He asked, “What is harj?” The Prophet said, “Killing.”

Prophet (s) said in the Last Days ignorance will cover the Earth and there will be too much killing. We are in the Last Days now, and we have to be very careful and open our eyes to what our children are watching on the Internet. It is related from Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah (r) that Prophet (s) said, “From the Signs of the Last Days is that far distant places will become very near and the places near will become closer,” like we see today [technology brings far-away places into our living room]. Also, time will collapse and be folded [technology shows us the past, present and future]:
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يُقْبَضَ الْعِلْمُ , وَتَكْثُرَ الزَّلازِلُ , وَيَتَقَارَبَ الزَّمَانُ , وَتَظْهَرَ الْفِتَنُ , وَيَكْثُرُ الْهَرْجُ وَهُوَ الْقَتْلُ , وَحَتَّى يَكْثُرَ فِيكُمُ الْمَالُ فَيَفِيضَ " .
The Hour will not arise until knowledge is lifted, earthquakes are many, time contracts, chaos is manifest, killing is prevalent, and until there is so much money it spills everywhere. (Bukhari)
يَوْمَ نَطْوِي السَّمَاء كَطَيِّ السِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ
The Day that We roll up the Heavens like a scroll rolled up for books (completed). (Surat al-Anbiya, 21:104)
“When We fold the Heavens like we fold the Book,” means time will be folded like a book; when previously it took one year to go to Hajj, today it takes three weeks. Before they went by boat from Indonesia all the way to Jeddah and then by land to Mecca, and it took one year to go and come back. Today it takes you four hours from Lahore to Jeddah and two hours later you will be in Mecca. Prophet (s) mentioned this 1400 years ago.
“There will be too much bloodshed.” In the time of Prophet (s), there was enmity between non-Muslims and Muslims and he gave them peace; by living in peace he (s) could take care of the unbelievers in Mecca and Madinah. However, today we find Muslims killing Muslims and they don’t care. Before it was a fair war, army against army, man to man, but now there is killing and burning on a mass scale. May Allah (swt) make us follow the Sunnah of Prophet (s). May Allah (swt) open our eyes and ears, in order that we may see these Signs of the Last Days now appearing and take a lesson from them.
Prophet (s) said, “In the Last Days, Allah (swt) will lift knowledge up, not by taking the Qur’an up, but good scholars will die and no one will replace them.”
إن الله لا يقبض العلم انتزاعا ينتزعه من الناس ولكن يقبض العلم بقبض العلماء حتى إذا لم يترك عالما اتخذ الناس رءوسا جهالا فسئلوا فأفتوا بغير علم فضلوا وأضلوا
Allah will not remove knowledge by pulling it out of people, but He removes knowledge by removing scholars, until when no scholar will remain and people will take ignorant leaders. They will ask them questions and they will give fatwas without knowledge, misguiding themselves and misguiding others. (Muslim)
عليكم بالعلم قبل أن يقبض وقبضه أن يذهب بأصحابه عليكم بالعلم فإن أحدكم لا يدري متى يفتقر إليه أو يفتقر إلى ما عنده إنكم ستجدون أقواما يزعمون أنهم يدعونكم إلى كتاب الله وقد نبذوه وراء ظهورهم فعليكم بالعلم وإياكم والتبدع وإياكم والتنطع وإياكم والتعمق وعليكم بالعتيق ) . رواه الدارمي
You must seek knowledge before it is contracted, and it will be contracted by the passing of its guardians. You must seek knowledge because none of you knows when you will need it. You will find people who claim that they call to the book of Allah, but in fact they cast it off behind their backs. So you must seek knowledge, and you must stay away from bida`, stay away from arrogance, stay away from probing too deep, and you must seek the old. (Sunan of Darami)
Ibn Mas`ood (r) narrated:
لا يَأْتِي عَلَيْكُمْ عَامٌ إِلا وَالَّذِي بَعْدَهُ شَرٌّ مِنْهُ , وَلا أَعْنِي عَامًا أَخْصَبَ مِنْ عَامٍ , وَلا أَمْطَرَ مِنْ عَامٍ , وَلَكِنْ ذَهَابُ خِيَارِكُمْ وَعُلَمَائِكُمْ , ثُمَّ يَحْدُثُ قَوْمٌ يَقِيسُونَ الأُمُورَ بِرَأْيِهِمْ , فَيُهْدَمُ الإِسْلامُ وَيُثْلَمُ
No year will come upon you except that it is worse than the one that came before it. However, I do not mean that a year will be more fertile than another or a prince better than another, but that your scholars, your good people and those of understanding will go and a people will come who teach matters according to their opinions, then Islam will be destroyed and skinned. (Tabarani, Sunan of Darami)
How many Muslim scholars do we currently have in the world today? Very few. In the time of Prophet (s) and after him, there were thousands upon thousands of sincere scholars, whereas today you find ten, fifteen, twenty, maximum thirty. “Until no scholars will remain,” there will only be scholars of paper, who read like we read (no scholars inspired with heavenly knowledge). In that time, people will run away and, “Some people misguide them and they deviate from the Right Way.” That is why we are now seeing too many scholars who are not following Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah, they are deviating. May Allah (swt) take care of us and bless us.
