Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.
Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,
nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, nawaytu ’s-siyaam, lillahi ta`ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.
In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
I intend the forty days (seclusion).
I intend seclusion (from dunya).
I intend to seclude myself (from sin).
I intend the isolation.
I intend the devotion.
I intend the discipline (Tariqah).
I intend the fast.
I intend complete obedience to Allah, The Exalted, in this mosque.
Verily, actions are by intentions. (Bukhari and Muslim)
We will continue the Hadith from yesterday and the day before and then that session will be finished. Awliyaullah try to maximize your reward; even with a small prayer you make they will take you to the Presence of the Prophet (s) through their spiritual powers. Of course you are not going to see anything, but they will take you there in any case.
We have made the intention: “Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah, nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, nawaytu 's-siyaam,” and every word of this is an ocean of knowledge! When you make arba`een (40) days, you make a decision, innama al-`amaalu bi ’n-niyyaat, everything is by intention. Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said, “As soon as you make the intention to make arba`een, you will be given all the rewards assigned to the one who actually completed the arba`een (forty days seclusion).” The one intending will get the rewards of the `abid who actually did the arba`een. Every `amal we do in Islam or imaan is to make the Prophet (s) happy with us and that is why Allah (swt) revealed that verse, to make Prophet (s) happy:
كُنتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّهِ
You were the best of Nations evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)
Allah praised Ummat an-Nabi (s) to make the Prophet (s) happy, as in alam nashrah laka sadrak, “Have We not expanded for you your chest?[1]” Allah (swt) let Prophet (s) know, “When someone from your Ummah says, ‘Nawaytu `l-arba`een,’ I will give him the rahmah, full rewards, of the `abid who completed the forty days seclusion in his house or masjid.”
So before any form of worship, make sure you make that intention, “Nawaytu `l-arba`een,” then, “Nawaytu ‘l-`itikaaf,” people make `itikaaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and get rewards from Allah (swt) according to what they did. If you make the intention “nawaytu `l-`itikaaf” on every prayer or action as if to say, “I want to make my action pure like the one doing `itikaaf,” Allah (swt) will dress you as if you did the ten days of `itikaaf. Say, “Nawaytu khalwah,” is seclusion from people, to be by yourself, and you will be rewarded as if you have done it. That is the Hadith, innama al-`amaalu bin-niyyaat, finished! Why are Awliyaullah happy? Because from a small niyyah, intention, Allah rewards their followers with big things and that knowledge Awliyaullah inherited from Prophet (s) from the verse:
فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا
So they found one of Our Servants on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our Own Presence. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:65)
For example, you make that intention “nawaytu `l-arba`een” as if you did the forty days, and “nawaytu ‘r-riyaada,” means to struggle against yourself like an athlete in training but in our case spiritually fighting our ego, and even if you did not do that you will still get the reward. Then “nawaytu 's-salook,” traveling in the way of Allah. “Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah, nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta`ala fee hadha 'l-masjid” and we are fasting, “nawayna ‘s-siyaam fee hadha `l-masjid.” “Sulook” is to be by yourself in the journey to the Divine Presence. With the niyyah you will be rewarded all that. Grandshaykh (q) said, “Don’t lose that niyyah in every `amal you do.” Say (everyone repeats), “Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah, nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta`ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.” That is our niyyah and inshaa-Allah Allah (swt) will reward us as if we have done it! So that is why Prophet (s) said in the continuation of the Hadith, “I am someone whose soul is going to be taken, going to ar-Rafeeq al-`Aalaa, the Highest Companion.”
For indeed, I am a person whose soul will be taken. (Bayhaqi; al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim an-Nisapuri)
When Sayyidina Jibreel (a) came to the Prophet (s) and said, “Allah is sending you greetings,” yuqri’uka as-salaam, “and is giving you a choice, if you wish to join Him or for Him to extend your life,” the Prophet (s) said, laa ar-rafeeq al-`alaa, that expression was given to the Highest Companion.
When Allah's support comes, you will see people entering the Path of Allah in great numbers.
(Surat an-Nasr, 110:1)
When that verse was revealed the Sahaabah (r) cried because they knew it meant the Prophet (s) is leaving them. [Mawlana reads Surat an-Nasr.] This surah indicated that Prophet (s) reentered Mecca and his mission was complete, so he (s) said, “Be careful as I am someone who will be leaving, and when I leave happiness will be gone. When I am around you everyone is happy and when I leave there will be too much sorrow, but I will observe the `amal of my Ummah, I will help you.”
I observe the actions of my Ummah. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see other than that, bad, I ask forgiveness for you. (al-Bazzaar in his Musnad)
He said, innee imra’un maqbood, “I am a person whose soul is going to go, wa inna ’l-`ilmu sayuqbad, and surely knowledge will be taken away and tazh-har al-fitan, too much fitna will come, there will be nothing left but fitna.”
It is mentioned by Abu Hurayrah (r) in another Hadith:
Baadiroo bi ’l-`amaali fitanan ka-qit`ail-laili ’l-muzhlim, “Be the first to do your `amal,” let it be a good `amal, try daily to begin your day with praying to Allah by reading Holy Qur'an, reading salawaat on the Prophet (s), begin your day with the best you can because there will be confusions like big chunks of dark nights.
Yusbih ar-rajulu mu’minan wa yumsee kaafir. Too much fitna, that a mu’min will wake up from his sleep a Believer and go to bed at night as kaafir. Ten hours is enough for Shaytan to trap him and make him a kaafir: he wakes up believing in Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s) and he is doing well, but during the day there is too much dark fitna that stuns everyone, such that they will not know what to do. The mu’min who was a Believer when night came will become a kaafir on the way of kufr, or wa yumsee mu’minan wa yusbihu kaafiran, when night comes he will become a mu’min and something will change him and by tongue or by heart he becomes kaafir, only Allah knows. May Allah protect us from falling into that category!
Yabee`oo deenahu bi `aridin min ad-dunya. “He sells his deen for little bit of dunya.” Today everyone is running to be famous, how? By following and running to the unbelievers to be with them and take selfies with famous people so you can be famous and behave like them to be accepted by them. Sayyidina `Umar (r) said, “Don’t wear the clothes of unbelievers.” Prophet (s) said:
Who imitates a group of people are from them. (Abu Dawood)
Prophet (s) said, “Whoever imitates a people will become from them.” No, you have to back off, you don’t need these selfies, Shaytan is taking the selfie with you, so don’t be selfish.
Prophet (s) said, “When the fitna comes there will be dispute,” and you can see the dispute today; what are people fighting for? “I am correct, you are wrong!” The other says, “I am correct, you are wrong!” So the fitna is greater than what you think. You think fitna is something bad; no, here Prophet (s) is saying the fitna will be within the religion! We are Muslims, there is going to be fitna between Muslims, between each other. You do not accept what he says and he does not accept what you say, so you fight. The smallest thing is the extent to which you do not accept and say, “This is kufr, this is bid`a, this is shirk, this is haraam.”
Prophet (s) said (same Hadith), “Two people will begin to dispute with each other, saying, ‘Your explanation is wrong!’ You dispute even in the most basic principles in Islam.” This is what we are seeing today. The Mufti of Albania, who came to our International Islamic Unity Conference in 1998, was imprisoned by the ex-Soviet Union for (I think) thirty years and they forced Muslim prisoners to eat pork. He said he never touched it and he passed many days without eating. He explained, “When Albania took its independence from the ex-Soviet Union, the masaajid were opened and many foreign groups came making fitna by bringing their understanding of Islam, while our people were raised on traditional Islam. They argued with worshippers, telling people their prayer was not accepted because they came from countries that followed a different Madhhab.”
In Albania, they follow the Hanafi Madhhab; after the Fatihah they do not say “ameen” aloud, but say it silently, unlike the in Shafi`i school of thought where you say it loudly. So they began telling people, “You have to say ‘ameen’ or your prayer is not accepted!” and disputed with each other. They were from the Salafi background and eventually they started killing each other! Why? Because of a dispute over someone saying ‘ameen’ loudly or silently. That is a small example. Another example is a religious group said, “Why are you folding your holds over each other during prayer?” When praying Fatihah you say “Allahu Akbar” and clasp your hands/forearms together and continue. They said, “Why are you putting your hands together? No, you must keep them down by your side!” and similarly, they argued. The Mufti said they filled Albania with fitna from small details in Shari`ah, which is what Prophet (s) said:
“They go so deep into discussions until they differ in opinions on the obligations, wa laa yajidaani afsiru bayna huma, and you cannot find anyone to say to them, ‘you are right’ or ‘you are wrong’ according to the different schools of thought and they will not accept any other opinion except their own and you have to know that is one of the Signs of the Last Days.”
`Awf ibn Malik (r) said in a Sahih Hadith that when Prophet (s) was in Tabouk fighting the unbelievers, he heard him say, “Yaa Malik, I am going to tell you six points from the Signs of Last Days, count them. The first is my death.” They were shocked, they never expected the Prophet (s) would die; even when Sayyidina `Umar (r) heard the news from some of the Sahaabah (r) that Prophet (s) had died, he said, “Anyone who says the Prophet died, I will cut his neck,” and all the Sahaabah (r) were afraid to say anything more. He was correct: Prophet (s) never died in the meaning of death of the physical body as he is alive in his grave, that is Ahlu ‘s-Sunnah wa ‘l-Jama`ah’s belief and it is the belief of Muslims:
I am alive and fresh in my grave.
“I am alive in my grave, very soft (supple flesh), just as I was in my life.” So he (s) said, “Count six.” [The first three Signs are cited here.]
`Awf ibn Malik narrated, “I came to the Prophet (s) when he was in the battle of Tabuk at the Dome of Adam and he said, ‘Count six Signs of the Hour: my death, then the conquering of Jerusalem, then death that will take you like the sickness of sheep.’” (Bukhari, Ibn Majah, Ahmad)
1. Prophet’s (s) death. “The first is my death.” The Sahaabah (r) were crying when they heard this, but this was the big Sign, his death, which is the most museebah, biggest affliction in Muslim history! It means wahi left, no more Revelation, the Revelation that made everyone happy and gave the Arabic language a heavenly understanding because the words of Holy Qur’an are the most eloquent Arabic, and Allah revealed it to Prophet (s).
2. Bayt al-Maqdis in Muslim Hands. “After my death there will be an opening, fath al-bayt al-maqdis, that my Khulafah will be able to take over Masjid al-Aqsa.” Today they are fighting for it. The first fath, opening, happened in the time of Sayyidina `Umar (r) when the non-Muslims agreed with the Muslims to take out the Roman occupiers. Christians and Jews agreed to support the Muslims to take back Bayt al-Maqdis and they helped them on the condition that Sayyidina `Umar (r) will come! So Sayyidina `Umar (r) left Madinah and came all the way to Jerusalem and put a place for Muslims to pray. He pioneered interfaith, the first, because he turned Bayt al-Maqdis into a place where Jews, Christians and Muslims can all worship. Similarly, in Sham, Damascus, he did the same thing with Masjid al-Amawi: he left the Christians and Jews to pray and designated an additional place for Muslims.
So the second Sign was Masjid al-Aqsa to be under the Muslims and Sayyidina `Umar (r) said, “The area is free so there is no compulsion to turn them to Islam as there is no force/compulsion in matters of religion. They are free to choose what they want.”
3. Widespread death. Prophet (s) said, “After that, too much mawtaan, death, with two types of death: one is like foot and mouth disease on livestock that will take my people’s lives.” We are seeing this happening today and he mentioned it 1400 years ago. The Sahaabah (r) did not know what kind of sickness the Prophet (s) was indicating because they had never seen it, but now we are seeing it.
Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the Earth). (Surat al-Fussilat, 41:53)
And this is what we are seeing today. So we will end it here, but there is further continuation of this Hadith, three more Signs that we will discuss tomorrow, inshaa-Allah.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
