We will do Khatm and Dhikr, and we will do visitation of the Holy Hair of Rasoolullah (s) and God willing, some qasidas will be recited after that, then sahur (laughs). Tonight there will also be Salat Al-Khayr, the Prayer of Goodness. This is a nafila prayer, so you can do it by yourself. If you want to do it with the congregation it is also allowed, no problem, but I think we will not be able to do it here, but we will pray 2 rak`ats together, then we will continue it at home as much as you can. It is not an obligation, it is nafil, voluntary, meaning we do it with love. You do things with love. Don't do something because you have to. That will not be accepted.
Allah (swt) is not a monster who forces you to do things, He wants you to do them with love. So, Insha'Llah, we will do 2 rak`ats together, then you can continue as many times as you can, but try to pray tonight.
There is a story about a woman. She is a good woman. When the sun rose, he would say to himself, “Hadha ’l-yawm yawmu mawtee,” “Today is the day I die.” So he spent his time in worship until evening. When night fell, he said, “Hadha ’l-laylu layla mawtee,” “Tonight is the night of my death.” So he will worship his Lord, Allah (swt) until dawn. He continued to do this until he finally died. All he wants is to meet his God in the best condition.
I also heard a story where there was a man who always prayed every night and always recited the Khatam Qur'an once every night. It is said that there are some `abids who perform khatam more than once every night. It is said that Hazrat Usman (r) always performed Khatm in one night, from beginning to end. So this man also did one Khatm and prayed all the night.
People came up to him and said, “Don't push yourself too hard.” He replied, “How old is the world?” They said, “According to our traditions, the world is 7,000 years old!” He asked again, "How long will the Day of Judgment be?" They answered, “خمسون ألف سنة, fifty thousand years.” He said, “If I lived as long as the world lasts, 7,000 years, I would spend my time in worship, asking my God to forgive me, rather than spending 50,000 years on the other side doing the same thing.”
So these men and women, what they want is to worship their Allah; to pray to their Lord, to remember their Lord, to have love for their Lord. That is why it is not difficult for him to worship for one hour. We worship for one hour, two hours and then we stop. These people worshipped all their lives.
In a hadith also narrated by Imam Tirmidhi, the Prophet (s) said, that if a person prays to Allah (swt) and asks for Heaven three times; Heaven itself will pray, "Allahumma adkhilhu ’l-Jannah" O Allah, enter him into Heaven." And if a servant prays, "O Allah, protect me from Hell." three times, Hell will pray, "Allahumma ajirhu mina ’n-naar," "Yaa Allah, protect him from me."
So tonight pray, "Allahumma innee as'aluka, yaa Allah, I ask You, ridaaka wa ’l-Jannah, “Your good pleasure with me and Paradise.” Allah knows best where in Heaven He will place you. There is Jannat of the Divine Presence, which is to be with Allah (swt)–-not with others. They want to eat and drink and do whatever they want. Well you can go there, of course it is there, but there is also Jannah for special people, namely Jannah with Allah (swt). So ask for “Allahumma innee as’aluka ridaaka wa ’l-Jannah” tonight. And ask for your fellow believers, because you are not a believer if you only pray for yourself.
لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه
La yu'minu ahadukum hatta yuhibbu li akhihi ma yuhibbu li nafsih.
The Prophet (s) said, “Not one of you has true faith among you until he loves for his brother everything he loves for himself.” (Bukhari and Muslim).
So when you ask for Allah's (swt) blessing and Jannah, ask also for your believer brothers and sisters, and when you ask to be protected from Hell and from punishment, ask also for your believer brothers and sisters. And Allah (swt) accepts it. He just wants you to admit that Jannah is Haqq, Naar is Haqq, Qiyamah is Haqq, Allah is Haqq, Muhammad (s) is Haqq, all you have to believe in, what you have to do is declare that all of that is Haqq (true!) That's it. Once you declare that it is true, Allah (swt) will forgive you.
Sayyidina Abayazid al-Bistami (q) said, “There are servants who, when they are put into Heaven, run from it as if they were running from Jahannam.” Why? Because in his heart there is only love for Allah (swt). There is no inclination for anything else, so they do not desire Jannah. In their hearts they don't want Jannah, their hearts only want Allah, so when they are given something they don't want, they will run away from it.
From that station, Sayyidina Abayazid al-Bistami (q) said, “My heart disappeared from me for 80 years! I tried to keep it, but I heard a voice saying, "Do you want anything other than Us?" “My heart is lost.” Lost where? Lost in love with Allah (swt). My heart had been lost for 80 years, so I tried to take it back, but there was in my heart a voice from heaven that said, "Are you asking for anything other than Us?"
So tonight, at least be at that station, do not ask for anything other than Allah (swt). Ask for Allah's (swt) blessing, because tonight the rewards will be written, the blessings will be written, and the qadaa, destiny will be written. So when evil comes, Insha'Llah, He will remove it, but when the evil comes, you have to be patient from sinning. When blessings come, you must be grateful. When qadaa comes, when destiny comes, you must be happy. So, be patient, grateful and pleased.
A believer, when his destiny is laid out before him, he will be patient with adversity, difficulties, he will be grateful for the blessings and he will be pleased with the qadaa, destiny from Allah (swt). If you accept it you will be given Maqam as-Siddiq. So if you want to attain the station of as-Siddiq, namely those who believe that Allah is Ahkamu’l-Haakimeen (أحكم الحاكمين), the best giver of legal decrees, Arhamu’r-Raahimeen (ارحم رحيمين), so if you believe that He is the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy, of all whom He sends out His mercy; He will write you as as-Siddiq. So ask for blessings and Jannah.
Once a poor man came to the Messenger of Allah (s). He said, "Ya Sayyidee, I only fast in the month of Ramadan and pray five times a day. I can't afford to give zakat, and I can't afford to go to Hajj, I don't have money. If I only have prayer and fasting, where will I be on the Day of Judgment?" The Prophet (saw) laughed, then he said, "If you guard your eyes from two things, guard your heart from two things, and guard your tongue from two things, you will be with me in Paradise."
That is why we desire Heaven. Not for the angels there (laughs), because some people say, "Ahh, he wants Heaven for this, for that..." No! No! We want Heaven to be with the Messenger of Allah (s).
If you can guard your eyes, first of all things that are prohibited, and do not look down on others. If you can do both, then you have done the first part.
Then your heart. You must protect it from envy. Do not envy others, if they are rich, or if they are rich, or if they are Shuyukh, or if they are presidents, do not have envy in your hearts. The second is not to have ghil (غل), which is hatred with the intention to hurt. That is the worst characteristic. You must protect your hearts from it. The Messenger of Allah (s) said, "You must protect your hearts from these two things, namely envy and jealousy." If you have done that, then there is one thing left: your tongue.
Do not gossip and lie. The Prophet (s) said, "If you guard your eyes from forbidden things and do not look down on others; if you guard your heart from envy and hatred towards others; and if you guard your tongue from slander and lies, then you will be with me in Heaven." So try to take care of these six things. Insha-Allah, Allah will make us neighbors of the Rasoolullah (s) in Heaven, be close to him, because whoever is close to him then there is Haqqu ’l-jaar (حق الجار), rights as neighbors.
Rasulullah (s) is a person who gives the rights as a neighbor and not just his first neighbor, but all his neighbors. So, if you are from his neighbors, he will give you from what comes to him. That is what we want. What came to him was something pure.
So worship as much as you can tonight.
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
Laa yukallifu’Llahu nafsan illa wus`ahaa
“Allah does not burden a person except according to his ability.” (Surat al-Baqara, 2:286)
Don't get to the point where you start hating what you are doing. Do it with love. Whatever you achieve, that is enough. Ask Allah (swt) for Jannah and for His good pleasure, Rida that He is happy with you, and Jannah that you will be with the Messenger of Allah (s). Ameen, O our Lord.
Nas'aluka ridaaka wa ’l-jannah wa na`udhu bika min sakhathika wa ’n-naar yaa Rabba ’l-`alameen, bi hurmatil-habeeb.
Yaa Rabbee we ask You to remove all the plagues and disasters that have been written for this year.
Yaa Rabbee, and also coming death, yaa Rabbee, we ask that You extend our life to reach Saahibu 'z-zamaan.
Yaa Rabbee, we ask for abundant sustenance in the coming new year for us, for our children, for the people we love yaa Rabba’l-`alameen.
