Jumu`ah Khutbah
O mu’mins! O believers! May Allah (swt) bless us on this holy day. We are asking for His Mercy and Blessings. We are asking that He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him. He has given you life. Why shouldn’t you be pleased with Him? He could have made you a rock that is tossed around right and left. He could have made you an insect. He made you a human being. Why aren’t you happy?
You have to be pleased that Allah (swt) allowed you to see, to hear, to speak and to walk. Many people are unfortunate. They don’t have those favors on them. Only if we have two million dollars in the bank do we say “alhamdulillah,” otherwise, no. Grow up, O insaan, O human being! A child is the one who wants everything. When you are grown up, you understand what’s valuable and what’s not. You let go of what’s not valuable and run after the valuable.
For example, if you show a child a red ruby and a red lollipop, he will take the lollipop because it’s sweet, it has taste and he likes it. There’s pleasure. You cannot do anything with the ruby. If you show a grown up a red ruby and a red lollipop and he takes the lollipop, he is out of his mind. Nobody does that. You understand what is valuable and what’s not.
A human being has a mind that deciphers between what is valuable and what is not. Why don’t you use your mind? Eternal life is valuable. You are happy with your life and the pleasures you get by being alive. You want to live more. You want to have more. Allah (swt) is telling you that there is a second life, O mu’min. When you have accepted iman, you have believed in a second life, O Muslim. Hello? Are you working for your second life? Very little because they are obliged. They say, “It’s fard, so we have to do it. You can leave the Sunnah. You can leave the nafl. You have to do the fard because Allah (swt) has obliged you.”
That is His Favor too. He has obliged you to enter His Jannah. Imagine somebody whipping you to enter Jannah. Allah (swt) send you obligatory worship out of Rahmah for you. If He leaves you to yourself, you will not worship. You will run after the pleasures of your ego and the worldly pleasures. He made it obligatory on you, “I want you by force to enter My Jannah.” Still people are running. Why? Because of Shaytan.
Shaytan is a realtor. He sells real estate. He is a very smart one too. He gives you good deals. He is the realtor of all properties in Jahannam. “O my friend, choose. Do you want the penthouse or the basement? I have all of them. Come to me.” When will you understand that Shaytan is a realtor and he’s selling properties in Jahannam? When are you going to understand, O human being, that a prophet is a realtor as well but he is selling you lots and mansions in Jannah?
Everybody wants to have a house on fire, a house in fire and a house of fire. Use your mind, O human being. Shaytan is after you to make you forget the second life, to make you forget the Hereafter. All of these prophets have come. Sayyidina Adam (a) said, “I was in Jannah, O my children.” Why was he in Jannah? To show you that there is Jannah, otherwise people will not believe. He said, “I came from Jannah. Your mother came from Jannah. We came down here and we were told to find our way up.” He was given guidance on how to reach that property in Jannah. It is said he lived for almost one thousand years. Why don’t we run after it? Why do we run after other properties?
Somebody came to Sayyidina Ali (r) and said, “Yaa Sayyidee. I bought a palace. Can you write the contract between the buyer and the seller?”
He said, “Okay. I will write it. A fool has bought from another fool. An absentminded one has bought from another absentminded one a big palace. He will never remain in it.”
Do you think you will live in the White House forever? Do you think you will live in Windsor Castle forever? Do you think you will live in Buckingham Palace forever? It keeps changing. No matter how big of a palace, house or mansion you get, sooner or later you’re going to leave it.
Sayyidina Ali (r) was teaching a lesson. He said, the first point is death. When death comes, nothing remains. After that, qabr, the grave. You see people being buried. Where do they put them? How come your mind does not comprehend that? It sees but somehow it does not go inside. It’s just an image. The third point is The Gathering. The fourth and final point, either you will get your property in Jannah or you will get your property in Jahannam.
Why don’t you think, O insaan? The people who have taken the path--Muslims of course. You have to start with Shari`ah and Islam. There is no tariqah without Islam. That is playing and close to kufr. Get your Shari`ah first and then tariqah. What do ahlu ‘t-tariqah do? They erase the engraving of this dunya and what’s in it from their hearts. When you are cleaning up your heart, when you are practicing salah - prayer, siyam - fasting, zakat - charity, and all of that, inside of you there is another imprint. There are things other than Allah (swt) engraved in your heart. That is what is making you forget about the second life. Dunya is imprinted in your heart along with its pleasures, the cars, mansions, pools, beaches, friends, parties and the drugs or what have you. All that money and wealth is imprinted in your heart.
When you seek the advice of a companion of Rasoolullah (s), when you seek the advice of Waliyullah, they try to erase dunya from your heart. Mashaa-Allah. We are running after dunya more. Which tariqah are you in? Which Islam are you in? Which huda are you following? Did Rasoolullah (s) call you for dunya or did he call you for Mawla, for Allah (swt)? Rasoolullah (s) called you for your property in Jannah. He says, “Follow me and I will show you how to get there.” Shaytan is telling you, “No, forget that. Follow me. I will show you another property. It’s very hot. It sells very quickly. It’s a very good property in Jahannam.” Listen to huda, to the guidance of Sayyidina Ali (r) and Sayyidina `Umar (r). Look to the example of Sayyidina `Umar (r), not only the guidance.
It is said that Shaytan is dhulmani, a dark creature with no light. Dhulmani runs away from noorani. Whoever is enlightened by the Noor of iman, by the Noor of Rasoolullah (s), he has given that iman to their hearts. Shaytan runs away from whoever is enlightened by Noor from Allah (swt). That’s what Rasoolullah (s) has said. Have you heard the Hadith of Sayyidina `Umar (r) that Shaytan runs away from him?
"Shaytan never met Umar on a path except that he took a different path from the one Umar was on." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Every time Shaytan finds you walking on a certain path, he takes another path. Why? Because he’s afraid of Sayyidina `Umar (r). Shaytan is invisible. How can he be afraid? He’s around you. He’s around me. He’s around everybody. What is Sayyidina `Umar going to do to him? It means Sayyidina `Umar is seeing what you’re not seeing. How did he see that? Why don’t you reach the level of Sayyidina `Umar (r)? He is a human being like you. He was not Nabi. Of course, he is Waliyullah but he is a human being like you of blood and flesh. Why is he seeing Shaytan and Shaytan is always running away from him but you’re not seeing? What’s the difference?
First Sayyidina `Umar (r) purified his ego from the bad manners and characteristics. What did he do? He changed his manners to the manners of the Qur’an. He got rid of the greed, the jealousy, the anger, the desires and everything related to dunya. The Qur’an has come to replace the hirs, the bukhul, running after everything, the stinginess, vengeance, anger--all of the characteristics in the human being’s ego. Shaytan has come to enforce that and Nabiyullah has come to change that.
Sayyidina `Umar (r) followed the guidance of the Qur’an and it has changed his characteristics. He is the same person. He entered the presence of Rasoolullah (s) as a kafir and exited as a mu’min. He entered with his sword in a certain way, his character was changed and he exited as a mu’min. His nafs was changed. You have to work on the bad characteristics and bad traits of the ego. That’s what connects you to this dunya.
The second is that he emptied his heart from worldly business. Did Sayyidina `Umar (r) have a company? Did he run a hospital? Did he have a clinic? Did he run a car dealership? What did he do? He emptied his heart from dunya business. First, he changed the characteristics of his ego to the good characteristics of the Qur’an. Second, he emptied his heart from dunya. When that happened, Allah (swt) filled his secret. That’s why you say “qadasAllahu sirrahu.” He filled his secret with Nooru ‘t-Tawheed. He only saw Allah (swt). He had Noor. There was no dunya, no ego and no other work and business. He was only concerned about Rasoolullah (s) and Kalamu ‘Llah. His heart was full of Nooru ‘t-Tawheed.
That’s what we need to do as much as we can. Some people are busy. Some people are attached. Some people are connected. We understand that but try your best to become like Sahaabah (r), try your best to hear the guidance of Sayyidina Ali (r). Whatever you buy in this world is not going to stay.
Sayyidina Ali (r) read what was written. That man backed out of purchasing the house. He gave that money to people and he did not want any more of this dunya. He became busy because he wanted his second life. Do you want your second life? That’s a question you should ask yourself. If you want your second life, follow Nabiyullah. He will take you to your property in Jannah. If you are happy with this life, follow Shaytan and he will take you to your property in Jahannam.
May Allah (swt) forgive us.
Understand Islam. Islam is not about taking you to the pleasures of this world, it’s about taking you to the pleasures of the Hereafter, if you are into pleasures. Everybody is asking for Jannah. “I changed my faith because I wanted Paradise.” I heard that the other day. May Allah (swt) give you Paradise, but it’s not about Paradise for Muslims and mu’min. A Muslims is someone who submits but a mu’min is deeper than that. A mu’min does not ask for Paradise.
It is said that Allah (swt) has taken the mu’min from dunya by telling him in the Holy Qur’an:
Qul mata`u ‘d-dunya qaleel.
Have you [O Muhammad ] not turned your vision to those who were told to hold back their hands (from fight) but establish regular prayers and spend in regular charity? When (at length) the order for fighting was issued to them, behold! a section of them feared men as - or even more than - they should have feared Allah. They said: "Our Lord! Why have You ordered us to fight? Would You not Grant us respite to our (natural) term, near (enough)?" Say: "Short is the enjoyment of this world: the Hereafter is the best for those who do right: Never will you be dealt with unjustly in the very least! (Surat an-Nisa, 4:77)
Whatever pleasure you get out of this dunya is little. Whatever you achieve in this dunya is little.
The mu’min shuns dunya because it is little. Compared to Akhirah, there’s nothing. Allah (swt) has made a deal with the mu’min in the beginning: leave dunya and I will give you Akhirah. The mu’min accepted and then Allah (swt) told him, asta`eedhu billah:
إِنَّآ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِيَغْفِرَ لَنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَا وَمَآ أَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلسِّحْرِ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ
W’Allahu khayrun wa abqaa.
"For us, we have believed in our Lord: may He forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us: for Allah is Best and Most Abiding." (Surah Ta Ha, 20:73)
Allah (swt) says, I am better. I am Ever-Lasting. I am better for you from Akhirah.
If you want Jannah and you changed your faith because you wanted Jannah, we don’t want Jannah. We want Allah (swt). Allah (swt) said, Allahu khayrun. God is better. You are running after a mansion and pleasures in that mansion and the rivers and gardens, go, run. It is there. Allah (swt) has promised them to the believers. You can enjoy that, but Allah (swt) said, “I am better.” W’Allahu khayrun. The mu’min first gets out of dunya, wanting Akhirah and then leaves Akhirah wanting Mawla. Be from them.
May Allah (swt) forgive us. May Allah (swt) allow us to understand. The first step is to follow a good one, someone who has shunned dunya and directed himself to Akhirah and then left Akhirah and pointed himself to Allah (swt). Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said,
innee wajahtu wajhiya li Lladhee fatara ‘s-samawaati wa ‘l-arda haneefa wa maa anaa min al-mushrikeen.
"For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards Him Who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allah." (Surat al-An`am, 6:79)
Wajh means face but it also means “fully,” everything that is in you to the One Who created Heavens and Earth, to Allah (swt).
Wa maa anaa mina ‘l-mushrikeen. “I am not from those who put a partner in between.” I only want my Lord.
Be like that. It is said he is the Qutb of Tawheed because he only wanted Allah (swt), the Lord of Heavens and Earth. He wanted the Creator, not another creation. Jannah is another creation just like you. Allah (swt) created it, He created you and He created others. Why do you run after creation? Some people are for Jannah. Some people are for Naar. It is the Wisdom of Allah (swt). Some people are for Allah (swt), Awliyaullah. Be from them, O insaan.
May Allah (swt) forgive us. Mashaa-Allah, so much `ilm. Everybody is talking, talking, talking, Qur’an, Hadith. Okay, what do you do? One student came to the presence of an `alim to study many Ahadith. At the end, the student said, “I need permission to go.”
The `alim said, “You can go back home but I will leave you with one thing. This one thing might benefit you more than all of the Ahadith you have heard because you don’t remember the Ahadith you have learned.”
We do not understand the true meaning of the Hadith. We take the literal meaning but there are other meanings from the `ilm of Rasoolullah (s). Of course, we don’t know. `Ulama knows, Awliyaullah knows. Here we have travellers. Some people will travel back today. Masha-Allah (swt), you have been here for a week or two and learned so many things. Everything will be forgotten except one thing. Take this with you. This man was from Khorasan and the `alim was in Baghdad. He was going back east to Khorasan from Baghdad.
“Do you have Shaytan back in your country?”
“Yes, we have Shaytan back in our country.”
“What do you do when he bothers you?”
“We keep giving him reasons and excuses. If he tells us something, we tell him something.”
“Don’t bother. You need to do what a dog owner does with his dog.”
If a dog attacks you, do you fight with it? If it’s a doberman, how do you fight a dog like that? You can’t so you call the owner.
“Shaytan will bother you. He will make you forget everything. He made Sayyidina Yusha (a) forget.
"And none made me forget to mention it except Satan." (Surat al-Kahf, 18:63)
Shaytan made me forget to mention the fish to you, O Musa.
Also:
Fa an sanhu’sh-shaytanu dhikra rabbihi.
"But Satan made him forget the mention of his Lord” (Surah Yusuf, 13:42)
About Yusuf (a), Allah (swt) said, Shaytan made him forget the dhikr of his Lord. If Shaytan comes to Nabiyullah and makes him forget, what about us?
He said, “Don’t fight with that Shaytan. Call his owner.” Shaytan will try to make you forget all your `ilm and run after your pleasures and get that property of yours in Jahannam. What you need to do is say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem, every time Shaytan attacks. You know how he attacks. He gets you from the sweet spot as they say. “Do you like this thing? Let’s do more of it.” He knows where to get you. Not everybody has the same hook. Shaytan has thousands of hooks, thousands of desires. Your pleasure is different from mine and mine is different from his. Everybody has some weakness.
Every time Shaytan hooks you, say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Call the owner. Allah (swt) created him for a hikmah, wisdom. It is said Allah (swt) created him so he can push the mu’min into Jannah. If Shaytan comes to you, run away from him to Allah (swt).
Fa firru il Allah.
Basically Shaytan pushes people. If you resist him, you are running to Jannah. If you are with him, you go with him wherever he is. Say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. If you don’t remember anything that was said by all the `ulama, all the Awliya, know that Shaytan has hooks for you. Whenever these hooks are pulling you into Jahannam, say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Allah (swt) will send an angel, madad, and that madad will break that hook. That’s why Shaytan was afraid of Sayyidina Umar (r) because as Awliyaullah have said, the madad of Allah (swt) appeared in Sayyidina Umar (r), the Haybah. It wasn’t his. It was Noor from Allah (swt) that He dressed on Sayyidina Umar (r). When he saw the Haybah of Allah (swt) appearing on Sayyidina Umar (r), he ran away. That’s why he said,
Innee araa maa laa tarauna innee akhaafullah.
“I am seeing what you are not seeing.”(Surat al-Anfal, 8:43)
It is said two armies [one Muslim and one unbelievers] were coming together and Shaytan was telling the unbelievers, “Come, let’s fight the mu’mins,” and then he left. It is in the Qur’an. They asked, “Where are you going?” He said, “I am afraid of Allah (swt). I see what you don’t see.”
When you ask for Allah’s (swt) Madad, when you say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem, it will come to you through the channels or sometimes directly depending on your strength. May Allah (swt) forgive us. May Allah (swt) allow us to evade the traps of Shaytan, to cut off the hooks of Shaytan and to be taken by the huda, guidance of Rasoolullah (s), the huda of Anbiyaullah to Paradise, inshaa-Allah.
