Secrets of Ashura

Shaykh Nour Kabbani

27 July 2023 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

Mawlana said that Ashura starts from Maghrib tonight. May Allah give us the blessings of the day of Ashura and keep us on the path of Truthful Ones.

Dastoor, ya Sayyidee, ya Rasoolullah!

Dastoor, ya Sayyidee, madad!

Insha-Allah a few words from our master. They are always looking at us and embarrassed by what we do. They keep us on that boat which slows down, but Allah swt speeds it up to make it reach the Shore of Safety.

Every day and night, Shaytan is working with his partner, the ego, to destroy human beings. That is why Allah (swt) sent the prophets. I heard this from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani. He asked, "Why did Allah send the prophets? Ashura is the day that Allah made the prophets victorious over their enemies."

And We had certainly sent to Thamud their brother Salih, [saying], "Worship Allah," and at once they were two conflicting parties. (Surat al-An`am, 6:42)

Allah sent His prophet Salih to his tribe Thamud, to tell them, "Turn away from the false gods you are seeking and seek Allah in truth!" So what happened? They became two arguing parties. Thus it is said when a prophet comes to his people, they divide into two groups: those on Haqq, Truth, and baatil, falsehood.

We cannot understand deep philosophical concepts well because our IQ is low, so the method of the Holy Qur'an is to use examples, amthaal.

And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it. (Surah Yasin, 36:13)

Allah says, "Give them an example of the people of the village." I heard from Mawlana an example in Turkish. There is a warehouse of millions or billions of wheat seeds piled up like a big mountain, and nothing else. What happens when you throw them in a field? Each one of them will show its reality. You throw the grain or seed there and what is hidden inside becomes evident.

O human beings! You are hiding something inside of you in a big group, piled up. But when the prophet comes, that will cause the reality of each seed in that field to appear and each will come out as its own world.

But human beings don't like that. They like to be one big pile of seeds. So it is the same with barley. It shows something different. Mawlana also gave the example of lemon seeds. When you throw them in the garden they become trees and show their realities.

So only a few human beings are allowing the farmer to take the raw seed and show what it can become. Each kernel of wheat has its own world and they don't interfere with each other. So Mawlana says that prophets were sent to unveil the reality that is hidden in each one and when people follow the prophets they plant the heart--which is the field-- with the seed of knowledge brought by the messenger. That ma`rifah becomes a tree whose fruits are love of Allah (swt). So messengers were sent for that reason: to take human beings from raw physical being to reality.

So today there are no longer any prophets; but there are Awliyaullah. On them is that burden. Why do people come to Awliya? To eat? That is one reason. To socialize? Yes, that is one reason. To network? Yes, that is one reason. But you are really here for your reality to come out so you can see your world. You can look and see what Allah created inside you.

So when Sayyidina Salih (as) came to his tribe they divided into two warring factions. One group accepted to be thrown in that field and most of them did not. They said, "We like where we are, we don't want to become a tree."

Now what happens to the wheat if it is kept in a warehouse for some time. Insects will eat it or the devil rat shaytan will destroy it or it will disintegrate on its own. So many have left their reality to decay; they left messengers.

They would have been given their own individual world of their own to be in it. When we come to Anbiyaullah and come to Awliyaullah we come to get that reality that is hidden inside us shown to us. That Waliullah takes you on his boat, the boat of Shari`ah orders of Allah (swt), and will tell you the orders coming to you and how to bring that reality that is inside you, out. That gardener or farmer will take care of you.

Some people say, "I am a shaykh as well." So in the beginning we must ask Allah to put us on the path of Truthful Ones. Mawlana says there are so many people who saw Awliya move people from the shore of difficulty to the shore of safety. Seeing this they said, "O we will do the same; we will take you to the shore of safety from shaytan and nafs. We will take you to the other side. Then, when they are halfway out, they cannot find the way back to the shore and they cannot find a way to the other side. They themselves will need a guide. So how do you find a guide? Awliyaullah have said--and insha-Allah we can be with them--that there are signs of those who reached Divine Presence. The first step when seeking eternity is to follow a Waliullah. There are three signs to tell you someone is Waliullah.

They talk about Sayyidina al-Husayn (as). Was he after dunya or after eternity? Was he after ruling over a bunch of people or after Allah 's pleasure?

The first sign is they drop the value of dunya so that the value of gold and silver is like dust. If you are on the way of Awliyaullah then you have to drop the love of monetary items. So when dunya comes to you in the morning and leaves you in the evening it is the same to you. Did you hear that from Shaykh Hisham? I heard it from him.

They asked one Sahabi, "How did you reach such a high rank?" He said, "If I am given all of dunya in the morning and it is lost in the evening it does not affect my heart."

The second sign that someone is Waliullah is that insult and praise are the same to you, you are not afraid if someone praises you for what you have said. If you are saying haqq you don't change statements for what people want. If you accept it, it is up to you. I heard Mawlana Shaykh Nazim say so many times how many people change what they say depending on the wind. If the wind is blowing east they say one thing and if it is blowing west they say something else. La yakhaafoona lawmat laa'im, Awliyaullah are not afraid of the blame of the blamers. These are the Sahaba al-Kiram that are on the correct way [and those who followed them].

Third and finally: Awliyaullah say you will control you ego to such a degree that you will find joy in not having any of their desires fulfilled. So when somebody is a king is he immersed in desires or not? Have you heard of haram of the Ottomans? That is what people like.

Their joy in not having a desire fulfilled exceeds the joy of the one whose stomach is full and has tasted all kinds of pleasure. That is how you control your ego. Hunger does not affect you any more. Rather Awliyaullah are happy when they have been tested by Allah. Yuftinoon adh-dhahab. They apply fire to gold to purify it, and this is termed fitna. That is what Sayyidina al-Husayn (as) was going through. People say, "O he was thirsty," "O he wanted to be calipha!" "O You are looking at him from the dunya point of view. You are screaming and crying for that. That is your angle but what is his angle? Is he looking at dunya or Mawla?

Sayyidina al-Husayn (as) is seeing Allah's decree unfolding in front of him. That is the sign of Waliullah the one who has joy in hunger as the others have joy in fullness. They teach you to drop love of dunya, love of knowledge, love of greatness and to accept they are insulting you. To be on the footsteps of the truthful ones is so hard for me and you.

We are so immersed in dunya. Sayyidina Musa (as) went to the Lord and said, "Ya Rabb! I want people to stop saying bad things about me.' His people said so many bad things about him. They even claimed that he killed his own brother Haroun (as) until Allah (swt) made the coffin of Haroun come before them carried by the Malaaika, angels.* Allah swt said to him, "O Musa how did I not make happen to you what happens to Me?"

What does it mean to have a child? It means a part of you comes out. You are made of parts so when you say that Allah has a child, haasha, it means a piece has broken off. Is He (swt) made of pieces!? So Allah (swt) replied to Sayyidina Musa (as), "I am not preventing them from saying badness about Myself, so what about you?"

Do you accept insults and praise? Are gold and sand the same value to you, so that if wealth comes to you in the morning and is gone in the afternoon it doesn't affect you? No! Today they kill themselves if they lose money in the stock market or trading: they jump off a bridge.

If you find someone teaching hubb ad-dunya and how to be higher and higher in dunya but if you find someone teaching you ... how to get your reality to appear follow that one, there are so many stories and wisdoms on these two days and from Sayyidina al-Husayn (as) when we look from the Akhira angle.

We start in the darkness of this night and reach the brightness of the light. So many people will come against what Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani said. He said that Sayyidina al-Husayn (as) was not killed. Mawlana says that Sayyidina `Isa (as) was lifted up to heavens on `Ashura and Sayyidina al-Husayn (as) was lifted up to heavens on `Ashura.

and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so. (Surat An-Nisa, 4:157)

You accept, you accept. You don't accept, you don't. This is a flea market. Take what you want. Sayyidina al-Husayn is higher and higher than any cursed one to touch him. may Allah keep us with the love of Awliyaullah and Sahaba and Ahl al-Bayt and Prophets growing in our heart.

Bi-hurmati 'l-habeeb bi-hurmati 'l-Fatiha.

You heard that from Mawlana Shaykh? Who else heard it? Ok so we have two witnesses.

*On the authority of Ibn Abbas, on the authority of Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with them, in his saying: : "فبرأه الله مما قالوا" “So God acquitted him of what they said,” (Surat Al-Ahzab, 33:69) who said

Moses and Aaron, upon them both be peace, climbed the mountain, and Aaron, peace be upon him, died. The children of Israel said to Moses, peace be upon him, "You killed him."

What harm is greater than that a people accuse their prophet of killing, and not only of killing but killing whom? His brother was killed, yet there is no one in humanity who benefited his brother as Moses benefited his beloved brother.

Due to his great prestige with God, Moses interceded for his brother Aaron that God would send him with Moses, so God answered his request:

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ مِن رَّحْمَتِنَآ أَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ نَبِيًّا

And [how], out of Our grace, We granted him his brother Aaron to be a prophet [by his side]. (Surat Maryam, 19:53)

[And now] go to Pharaoh, for verily he has transgressed all bounds of equity. (Surah TaHa, 20:24)

And let him share my task. (Surah TaHa, 20:32)

He said: 'You are granted all that you asked for, O Moses!' (Surah TaHa, 20:36)
