Prophet’s Concern is for His Ummah

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

5 August 2016 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Institute & Mosque (ASIM)

[Du`a of khutbah.]

And say, “My Lord! Give me more knowledge.” (Surah Taha, 20:114)

O Muslims, Believers! Allah (swt) wants the best for His servant, He wants them to see His treasures He gifted them and He said:

وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثْ

But as for the favor of your Lord, proclaim [it]. (Surat ad-Duha, 93:11)

“Yaa Muhammad (s), tell everyone about what I gave you from My favors.” So it is an order to Prophet (s) to tell everyone about the Message of Islam. The greatest favor to His `abd is that Allah granted him to be Muslim. Be Muslim and be happy! Allah (swt) will take care of you.

Prophet (s) said in a Hadith:

‏انما بعثت لاتمم مكارم الاخلاق

I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character). (Bazzaar)

That is a very fine Hadith that Allah has sent him, to deliver the message of Islam. He laid down the Five Pillars of Islam, the foundation, and that is innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq, but the foundation needs reinforcement, we cannot have a building without a roof. The foundation of Islam is the Five Pillars and everyone knows that, iqaamu ’s-salaah wa eetaai ’z-zakaah wa sawmu ramadan wa hajju ’l-bayt, yaa Allah (swt) yataqabbal minna shahaadatu laa ilaaha illa-Lllah wa anna Muhammad rasoolullah. So He wants us is to build these columns and Prophet (s) mentioned one of them:

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا

Rise from your sleep and pray during part of the night supererogatory worship for yourself,

(O Muhammad)! It maybe your Lord will raise you to the Praised Station. (Surat al-Isra, 17:79)

Allah (swt) is saying to make sure to worship Him and pray at night when everyone is sleeping, He likes that character. Wa min al-layli fa tahhajad bihi, make a part of the night for prayer. Many people around the world are doing this, they pray Salaat al-Qiyaam, but you have to lay down its foundation in order to understand what is good and what is wrong within you. That is why Prophet (s) said he was sent to perfect the good manners and characters within you. That’s why Sayyidatina `Ayesha (r) said:

كان يقوم من الليل حتى تتفطر قدماه فقالت عائشة لم تصنع هذا يا رسول الله وقد غفر الله لك ما تقدم من ذنبك وما تأخر قال أفلا أحب أن أكون عبدا شكورا

He (s) used to stand during the night in prayer until his feet were swollen. She asked, “Why are you doing that, O Messenger of God, when Allah has forgiven you everything that happened and everything to come?” He (s) said, “Should I not love to be a thankful servant?” (Bukhari)

The Prophet (s) woke up in the night, stood, prayed and make du`a until his feet were swollen. She felt bad for him, saying, “Yaa Rasoolullah, what you are doing? Allah (swt) took away your load, ‘Alam nashrah laka sadrak.’” Prophet (s) is ma`soom, infallible; he has no sins, but he was carrying the load of his Ummah, saying, “My Ummah! My Ummah!” during his birth, during his life and after. So his concern is Ummatuhu, will His Nation be saved or not? That is why he was standing, pleading, “Yaa Rabbee! Forgive my Ummah, give them Paradise with no account.”

He (s) answered:

(Yaa `Ayesha!) Who will be judged will be punished for sure. (Bukhari)

“Anyone who will be judged will for sure find something is wrong! Allah will tell him in his life, so asked not to be judged.”

She asked him, “Why are you exerting yourself, standing all night worshipping and Allah has taken away your load and forgiven your Ummah and taken them to Paradise?” Prophet (s) said, “Don’t you want me to be a thankful servant to Allah (swt)? I am standing, and if I can stand from day one of the creations of Heavens until Akhirah, I will be standing for the favors that Allah sent to my Ummah and to me.”

Imagine Prophet (s) standing at night, asking for the benefit of the Ummah, for our behalf. So what do we have to do? Send salawaat on him. [MSH recites Salawaat al-Faatih.] Awaken at night, then Allah will be happy when you make wudu and pray two raka’ats. We are losers because we do not do that, we should be doing it every day. All his life, Prophet (s) made sajdah, prayers, du`a, doing everything for the benefit of the Ummah. What are we doing for our benefit and for the Ummah?

After Jumu`ah, people leave and begin to shout and scream, walking, telling stories to each other instead of sitting and thinking what was the khutbah about today, what did the imam say for us to perfect ourselves and our relationships with family and community? Prophet was concerned about himself, about his family, about his Ummah.

Sayyidna `Ali (r) related this Hadith:

أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم طرقه وفاطمة بنت النبي عليه السلام ليلة فقال ألا تصليان فقلت يا رسول الله أنفسنا بيد الله فإذا شاء أن يبعثنا بعثنا فانصرف حين قلنا ذلك ولم يرجع إلي شيئا ثم سمعته وهو مول يضرب فخذه وهو يقول وكان الإنسان أكثر شيء جدلا

Rasoolullah (s) came to his and Fatimah’s house one night and said, “Are you not praying?” (Bukhari)

One night, Prophet (s) knocked on his door and said, “Are you not praying?” He wanted to know are they taking benefit of the night by praying, or not? And this is for Sayyidna `Ali and Sayyida Fatima az-Zahra (a)! Prophet (s) was guiding them to pray at night by knocking at their door. Even if we put an alarm clock on our nightstand to wake up, when it rings we shut it down, we don’t want to hear it. Next time don’t set an alarm clock, schedule the adhaan to be called, then you will be afraid to shut it down as to close the adhaan is not nice, the angel of the right shoulder who is responsible to record the good `amal will check if you are doing it, or not. Everyone has an angel checking on him. Prophet (s) was checking on Sayyidna `Ali and Sayyida Fatima az-Zahra (a), which is good tiding for them and we wish Prophet (s) checks on us. He (s) said, “I am checking on you”:

تعرض علي أعمال لكم فإن وجدت خيراً حمدت الله وما وجدت غير ذلك استغفرت لكم.

My life is a great good for you: you relate from it and narrations are related to you. And my death contains good for you as well, for I observe the `amal of my Ummah. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see other than that, bad, I ask forgiveness for you. (al-Bazzaar in his Musnad)

Allah (swt) said:

If they had only, when they were unjust (oppressor) to themselves, come to you and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisaa, 4:64)

“When they are oppressors to themselves they come to you, O Muhammad.” There is no other door. Many scholars around the world said there is no way except for the Intercession of Prophet (s). “They come to you, O Muhammad,” means they do istighfaar in Prophet's presence! Sahaabah (s) were lucky to have Prophet (s) among them and we have to be happy Prophet (s) is observing our `amal. We hope inshaa-Allah he is observing good `amal.

Sayyidna `Umar (r) once told his son `Abdullah (r) that Prophet (s) said, “He is the best one if he is praying during the night.”

[Rasoolullah (s) said], “How wonderful would `Abdullah be if he prayed during the night.” After that he never slept at night except for a little. (Bukhari)

If you thank Me, I will give you more. (Surah Ibraaheem, 14:7)

May Allah accept from us when we say, “Shukr, yaa Rabbee for Your favors.”

[Du`a.]
