Prayer in Ramadan

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

17 August 2012 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

(Final khutbah of Ramadan)

(Du`a)

O Lovers of the Prophet (s)! Ramadan has ended and Shawwal is at the door, and we ask Allah to open to us the manifestations of this blessed month. Allah (swt) said:

الصوم لي وانا اُجزي به

As-sawmu lee wa anaa ajzee bih.

Fasting is for Me and I will reward it.

Alhamdulillah, Ramadan is finished and our only concern is will it be accepted or not, but from Allah's Vast Mercy, may He accept our Ramadan!

Prophet (s) said the first ten days of Ramadan are mercy, the second ten days are forgiveness and the last ten are freedom from Hellfire. So these are the last ten days and thus those who fasted are freed from Hellfire. In Ramadan, most of the time you are fasting and praying. Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاء وَالْمُنكَرِ

Inna as-salaata tanhaa `ani ’l-fahshaai wa ‘l-munkar.

for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; (Surat al-`Ankaboot, 29: 45)

Also in this month, the Prophet (s) said to pray Taraweeh, and Qiyaam al-Layl and Taraweeh are prayed with the jama`ah unless you are traveling or sick. And why with jama`ah? Because praying it by yourself it might not be accepted, but with jama`ah it will be accepted, as Allah (swt) said:

يد الله مع الجماعة من شذ شذ في النار

Yadullahi ma`al-jama`ah.

The Hand of Allah is with the congregation.

This is not a physical hand, but represents Allah's Mercy and Love. It might be for sake of one person in the jama`ah, even one young boy or young girl, that Allah will make accept our prayers. That is why it is said that salaat is very important in Ramadan, because it is the Shawaariq al-Anwaar, the rising lights from the horizon, from Allah's Noor. That will come up in every prayer you pray in jama`ah and that Noor will dress you!

The Prophet (s) said, “The happiest time is when I am praying because it is the place of munajaat,” the place where you are speaking to Allah directly with no one in between. We ask for our prayer to be accepted for sake of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Also, if your du`a is good then your prayer is good.

فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ

fa’d`oollah mukhliseena lahu ’d-deen.

Call on Allah with sincerity to His Religion. (Surat Ghaafir, 40:14)

We know the religion with Allah is Islam, inna ad-deena `indallahi al-Islam. So if we are sincere with Islam we are sincere with Muslims, and if we are sincere with Muslims we are sincere with mu’mins, and then we are sincere with Allah! So to know your level of sincerity, you must check to see if your prayer is accepted. If you are lazy to go and pray, if you try to postpone and postpone and postpone, until the time of that prayer expires, Shaytan is there! Know that he is always ready to attack us. If your prayer is a lazy prayer, it might not be accepted, but if your prayer is with iman, then as soon as you hear the adhaan, stand up to pray then, and as soon as we stand up to pray it is accepted.

Also, every prayer that doesn’t prevent you from committing sins and faults is not a prayer, because when you pray you have to choose, “Am I going to be on side of iman or not?” If your prayer doesn’t stop you from sins, it is not accepted. If your prayer makes you better believers and Muslims, it prevents you from sin.

Abu Darda (r) said, “If every breath I inhale and exhale doesn’t come in or go out with Allah's Remembrance, it is hasratan `alayya, a bad situation for me; then I wasted my breath and my life like a jewel that fell into a garbage dump.”

Allah (swt) said everything is counted,

لَقَدْ أَحْصَاهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا

laqad ahsaahum wa `addahum `adda.

He does take an account of them (all), and hath numbered them (all) exactly. (Surah Maryam, 19:94)

How old you are in this dunya is determined by how many breaths you breathe in dhikrullah. Once a man visited a graveyard and prayed for the various inhabitants of graves he saw. Another man came from nowhere and said, “This one died at ten years,” but his grave was marked that he died at seventy years.

So the first man asked, “What do you mean?”

He said, “Didn’t you know that hadith of Abu Darda, that any breath not breathed in and out on dhikrullah is wasted?”

Rajab is the month of Allah (swt), Sha`abaan is the month of the Prophet (s) month and Ramadan is month of the ummah, and the last ten days of Ramadan is `itqun min an-naar, salvation from the Fire.

...innama huwa hadha al-`ilm laysa huwa qalqala, this knowledge is not just ‘qalqala,’ what Arabs understand as “nice recitation,” but in lectures you show yourself to make qalqala. but Ibn `Ajiba said, “This is not the way of reciting with qalqala, but it is a taste and to pray with the people of Allah who …”

And Allah is with whoever remembers Him. That is not shirk, but it is a Holy Hadith revealed to the Prophet (s). It means, “Do what you want to do and say what you want about the Prophet (s), make him the highest possible, as that is not shirk.” Shirk is to say “Allah has a child.” There are many things to encourage us to do more and more `ibaadah, and doing nawaafil is not shirk; shirk is to be careless in saying “Allah has a son,” as Christians said, “Jesus is God's son” and the Jews said, “`Uzayr is the son of God.”

Whomever wants to know his standing in Allah's Presence must look at his presence in the prayer. I see many people in the prayer when going from Surat al-Fatihah to a surah and going into ruku`, they go quickly and bend halfway like roosters and chickens pecking the soil to find something. You are making your prayer like a worms and this is not accepted, so don’t pray that kind of prayer. When I was 15 or 16 years old, I used to do like that but the stick was on the other side. Don’t play with prayers! You must perform ruku` , sujood and even wudu very nicely! Don’t transgress the limits of the prayers as Allah doesn't like that.

Ibn `Abbas (r), one of greatest muhaddith and mufassir of Holy Qur'an, said, “If you made your prayer and didn’t feel any fear of Allah, and if you read the Holy Qur'an without feeling, and if you mentioned Allah and no tears come, then throw dust on your head (meaning, you are doomed)! Make sure to cover yourself with dirt from the ground because you are not trustworthy! Cry for your sins and ask Allah to give you a heart other than this heart (change your heart to be a better heart).”

After prayer, the Prophet (s) made istighfaar of “SubhaanAllah, alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar (33 times each), which completes the prayer. After that, whoever says, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wahdahu laa shareek lah lahu ‘l-mulku wa lahu ‘l-hamd wa huwa `ala kulli shay’in qadeer,” Allah will forgive his sins, even if they are like foam on the oceans!

O Muslims! We are in the Last Days and may Allah grant us that we repent and may He grant us every goodness. He (swt) said:

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-'Imraan, 3:31)

(Du`a)

(Salaat al-Jumu`ah)

(After salaat, Mawlana prepares to distribute Zakaat al-Fitr.)

Alhamdulillahi rabbi ‘l-`alameen... In this envelope is fitrah money that will be given to some people here who are in need. May Allah accept our fitrana along with our fasting, and our Zakaat al-Fitr, our prayers and Taraweeh, and for the sake of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) may He grant every breath we took as having been on fitra! Allah is The One who can make things acceptable. May He make us steady on faith and Islam, and perfect our character and make it nearness for us to Paradise. For the sake of the Prophet (s) and this blessed Ramadan, may Allah (swt) accept our zakaat and fitra and change it from imitational to real zakaat and fitra! And may He not leave one sin except that it is forgiven, and not leave any difficulty except it is solved, and make easy our affairs, and give us a long life to reach Sayyidina al-Mahdi (s)!

Yaa Allah! Make recitation of Holy Qur'an easy for us, and make it our guide and light on the Path, and gather us with the Prophet (s) in this life and the Next Life, and let him be with us in every moment! O Allah! Change the condition of all of us--our families, children, and all family relationships--to make us under the shafa`ah, intercession of Rasoolullah (s)!

The truest thing a servant can say is that there is no one to prevent from us what You gave, O our Lord, and none can give what You prevent, O our Lord! Give us long life. You are our Support and our Helper, so forgive us with Your Mercy, and send Saahib az-Zamaan for the sake of the secret of Surat al-Fatihah!
