Prayer Can Protect Us From Shaytan

Shaykh Nour Kabbani

7 February 2015 Los Angeles, California

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Dastoor yaa Sayyidee Shaykh Nazim, madad. Dastoor yaa Sayyidee, yaa Qutb al-Mutasarrif. Dastoor yaa RijaalAllah!

Our Master, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) taught us to recite this. When he was ill, he said he entered seclusion and they revealed to him this prayer, this glorification:

Subhaanim Allah, Sultaanim Allah, Nabiim Muhammad, `alayhi ‘s-salaam!

Subhaanim Allah, Sultaanim Allah, Nabiim Muhammad, `alayhi ‘s-salaam!

Subhaanim Allah, Sultaanim Allah, Nabiim Muhammad, `alayhi ‘s-salaam!

He said, “This prayer is enough to protect each one of us from Shaytan.” When we are in the middle of anything and you see Shaytan coming on you, all you need to do is say, “Subhaanim Allah, my Subhaan is Allah; Sultaanim Allah, my Sultaan is Allah; Nabiim Muhammad, `alayhi ‘s-salaam, my Nabi is Muhammad, peace be upon him.”

Mawlana taught us that if you recite this you will be protected from any whispers from Shaytan, no matter where you are. So if we find ourselves in the middle of kufr, surrounded by disobedience to Allah Almighty, then recite this. Everywhere you look is disobedience to Allah (swt): in your home, on the street, in your school, university, in your work, conference, events, in a restaurant or just walking. You might be surrounded by disobedience to Allah (swt), so what do we say? We don’t want to be a part of it. Do you want to be a disobedient servant? No, you want to be an obedient servant, so what must we do?

We are in the middle of it! We call unto Allah (swt), saying, “O my Lord! You are my Subhaan! You are my Sultaan! Muhammad is my Prophet, peace be upon him!” The moment you mention Allah (swt) in you mind, heart, tongue, He is with you with His Power. He is always with us, we can’t be without Him, but we are unaware. So when we bring that awareness to ourselves, when we say, “Allah is with me, Subhaanim, You are mine,”--this is a Turkish version, but that’s how Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) told us to recite it--you are saying, “My Subhaan is You, O our Lord, Allah (swt)! My Sultaan is You!”

The minute we bring that awareness of Him into ourselves, we connect with His Power and He becomes our protectant. Against what? Against kufr, disobedience and any temptations you might have at that moment. So as long as we have that dhikr, then in any situation when face difficulty, say, “I'm weak, O my Lord! I remember You and I remember my Prophet, Muhammad (s), please help me!" because you don't want to fall into disobedience, which opens the gates of a dam and becomes a flood on you.. Either you are taken by the flood or you hang onto a branch or a rock or whatever to save yourself from the flood, or you get on the ship of ad-deen, religion, which is Shari`ah, Qur’an and Hadith. That is going to save you from the flood coming through the gates that have opened. Asta`eedhu billah!

Allah (swt) says:

There was a sign for (the tribe of) Saba' in their dwelling place: two (fields of) gardens on the right and on the left. (They were told), “Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land (have you), and a forgiving Lord." But they turned away (refusing), so We sent upon them the flood of the dam and We replaced their two (fields of) gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees. (Surat as-Saba’, 34:15-16)

Saba’ is a tribe, a nation that received a sign. Pay attention to it, as Allah (swt) is describing: Laqad kaana li saba’in fee maskanihim aayah, "in their maskan", their living quarters, wherever they used to reside, they had two gardens, jannataan: one on the right and one on the left. Kuloo min rizqi rabbukum, So eat from the fruits of these two paradises, wa ‘shkuroo ’Llah, and thank Him. Baldatun tayyibah, a beautiful and clean town, village, country, land, wa rabbun ghafoor, and a Merciful Lord. Fa `aradoo, but they turned away. Fa arsalnaa `alayhim sayla ‘l-`arimi, so We opened the flood, sayl, on them. Wa baddalnaahum bi jannatayhim jannatayn dhawaatee ukulin khamtin, We have changed their paradises with paradise that had bitter, disgusting fruit, wa shay’in min sidrin qaleel.

So basically, Allah (swt) gave to that nation--which can also be applied to us because we are human beings and they were human beings--two paradises with beautiful fruits, but He said, “Thank me.” That means, “Make dhikr of Me, mention Me, don't forget Me.” But fa `aradoo, “they turned away from remembrance of Allah (swt).” So all the favors, bounties and tools that Allah (swt) gave them to live a comfortable, happy life, in return He asked them for remembrance of Him by thanking Him, by worshipping Him, by continuing to be on the Siraat al-Mustaqeem, the Right Path, but they said, “No” and `aradoo, “they turned their backs and walked away”, they walked away from Allah (swt)!

So Allah (swt) says, “I have sent the flood on them--the flood of desires, sins, disobedience, naar, fire--and I have turned their two paradises into bitter fruits--of killing, hatred, destruction, jealousy.” He gave them the fruits of sabr, tawakkul, shukr, patience, trust in Allah, thanking Allah, the fruit of `ilm, knowledge, Lights, of Realities, just by mentioning and remembering Allah (swt), but they said, “No.”

He said, “Okay, you don't want to thank Me? You don't want the lights, mercy and knowledge I will send on you? Fine, I will send you the knowledge of hatred and the fire of killing, harming, cheating, adultery, pride and usury! In fact, all the bad characteristics that are in you, I have opened their gates and they are going to destroy you!”

So when we are in that flood of disobedience around us, and you can see it all around, it's a flood of disobedience, we must not turn our backs away from Allah (swt), we must keep remembering Allah (swt)! So Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) says, “When you are in difficulty, say, ‘Subhaanim Allah! Sultaanim Allah! Nabiim Muhammad, my Prophet is Muhammad,`alayhi ‘s-salaam.’”

So when you remember Allah (swt), He is protecting you from that flood of disobedience or else you are going to be taken with it and then there is no way you can resist it. Without Allah's Protection, you cannot resist the flood of disobedience that is flowing, no way! You will be attracted to it, enjoy it and you will want more of it! So dhikrullah is what shuts off these gates of this terrible flood, which is like a dam and dhikrullah shuts the gates. If there is no dhikr, all those desires are going to flood you and take you with them. So inshaa-Allah we continue with our dhikr and the best dhikr is, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” as Prophet Muhammad (s) said in a Hadith ash-Shareef:

افضل الذكر لا اله الّا الله

The best remembrance of Allah is to say,“There is no god but Allah.” (Tirmidhi)

If we do that as much as we can, like our Grandshaykh (q) taught us, and if we say, “Sultaanim Allah, Subhaanim Allah, Nabiim Muhammad `alayhis salaam,” we know for sure that Allah (swt) will protect us and block that disobedience from entering our hearts.

We ask Allah (swt) to keep us on the Right Path! We ask Allah (swt) to keep us with the dhaakireen, those who make dhikr and tasbeeh, who thank Him!

Bi hurmati ‘l-habeeb, bi hurmati ‘l-Fatihah.
