Fajr Suhbah
A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-'Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu 'alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa saahbihi ajma'een wa man tabia`ahu bi ihsaan ila yawmi ‘d-deen wa ‘l-Awliya wa ‘l-ibaadullahi Saaaliheen. Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi ‘l-`Aliyyi' l-`Azheem.
Dastoor ya Sayyidee, ya Sultan al-Anbiya, madad! Dastoor ya Sayyidee, Qutb al-Mutassarif, madad. Dastoor ya Sayyidee, Sultan al-Awliya, madad yaa rijaalullah.
Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmaaani ‘r-Raheem. Salaam `alaykum wa rahmaatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Alhamdulillah we have been worshipping since Maghrib, let us say eight hours. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, our teacher, our master, our beloved, may Allah raise his stations and inshaa-Allah his gaze is upon us, and my father Mawlana Shaykh Hisham often remind us of the Hadith:
تفكر ساعة خير من عبادة سبعين سنة
To remember Allah (swt) (contemplate or meditate) for one hour is better than seventy years of worship.
The contemplation, thinking, to use your pure mind. Inside yis the nut, lub, and outside you have the cover (shell). Mind is only a shell, sometimes nuts play tricks on you: you break it and there is nothing inside except dust. Those who can remember Allah’s Names and Attributes have something on the inside, and Grandshaykh is saying that in Islam and imaan, that one hour of contemplation is better than seventy years of worship, and in another Hadith it states it is better than worshipping one year. So one hour of contemplation is more valuable than eight hours of worship. Therefore, these associations are important, as even if you just sit for 10-20 minutes you get the reward of forty years. So Mawlana is forcing us, he said, “Give suhbah after Fajr,” and now we are sitting and we get worship of years and years. Yaa Rabb, accept us to be from the worshippers.
`Oolu ‘l-albaab, those who have something on the inside, Allah praises the `ibaad al-abidoon as-sahihoon, and has given so many titles to His beloved ones. Inshaa-Allah we will be from one of these groups. So Mawlana Shaykh Nazim is saying...look how encompassing his teachings are, he teaches spirituality and external knowledge, how to behave in the community and society.
He said it is forbidden to curse your presidents, your kings, those who are in authority. Whatever imam or priest tells his people not to belittle the ones on top is quoting Holy Qur’an and we recite it every morning:
قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ تُؤْتِي الْمُلْكَ مَن تَشَاء وَتَنزِعُ الْمُلْكَ مِمَّن تَشَاء وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشَاء وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَاء بِيَدِكَ الْخَيْرُ إِنَّكَ عَلَىَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Say: "O Allah, Lord of All Dominion! You grant dominion to whom You will and take away dominion from whom you will, and you exalt whom You will, and debase whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Verily, You have the power to will anything. (Surat Aali-Imraan, 3:26)
“Say: ‘O my Lord, The Owner of All Ownerships; The King of All Kingdoms; The Sultan of All Sultanates; The One Who Owns Everything! All Power is in Your Hand. You give ownership, kingdoms, and presidencies to whomever You wish or will.” This is Holy Qur’an teaching us, “O my Lord, The Owner of Dominions! You give authority to whomever You want.” Be in agreement with Allah’s Will, mukhaalif, don’t be in disagreement. Know, “You are The One who puts them on top. You make whomever You want president, mayor, or governor. watanziaau al-mulka mimman tashao watuaaizzu man tashao, and You are The One Who naz`a, painfully takes by force!”
You have seen how many tyrants have been painfully removed from their posts, you see the agony in their faces. Listen to Awliya: don’t keep listening to imams who know nothing and incite violence, hatred, disagreement, and disobedience. Don’t listen to them, listen to Holy Qur'an! Allah is The One Who gives and takes that power from all presidents and kings and sultans, anytime You want. So Mawlana says when there is something you don’t like...subhaan-Allah, nowadays when they don’t like something they go out and protest, but who are they protesting against? Allah (swt), against His Holy Will, especially Muslims. They don’t know that holy verse; go read it. Allah is The One Who gives power to whom He wills, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, and He takes power from whomever He wants, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.
So what do we need to do? We follow the Holy Hadith (Qudsi), where Allah (swt) says: I am The King of Kings, and The Owner of kings. The hearts of kings are in My Hand! If My slaves obey Me, I turn the hearts of their kings to them with tenderness and mercy; but if My slaves disobey Me, I turn the hearts of their kings to them with wrath and vengeance. Therefore, do not occupy yourselves by abusing kings, but (rather) pray (to Allah) for their reform, for their reform comes from your own reform.
Ana maalik al-mulook, “I am the King of Kings,” in Urdu Shaha Shahaan, King of Kings. That is why it is not proper to give that title to any human beings. “I am The King of Kings and The Owner of Kings, and the hearts of kings, presidents, sultans are in My hand. And if My servants obey Me…” mashaa-Allah look at His servants in our countries: what do they do in Ramadan? They make iftaar and then go clubbing and dancing, they have their own preachers! Wa idha a`ataaoonee hawalta qulooba mamaalikihim ilayhim bil raafa, “If My servants obey Me, I will turn the hearts of their kings towards them, to be with them, and then Allah will turn the hearts of their rulers to them with mercy and softness.”
He will change the hearts of your presidents if you obey Him.
Today they don't like this prime minister, this president, this king. Today they go out and protest. Who are you protesting against? He says, “If you obey Me, I will change the hearts of their rulers to you with mercy and compassion, and if you disobey I will turn the hearts of their rulers to them with revenge, niqmah wa sakht and anger.”
So the Hadith continues, “Don't be busy cursing those who are in charge; rather pray for them to become better ones.” Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to always pray, “Make the ones on top good ones, and replace the bad ones with good ones.” The ones on top become good when you, O human beings, become good. Then your ruler will become good, and Allah will turn his heart. Don't be busy with cursing him and what all we do these days: be good yourself and ask for the one on top to be good.
He gave the example of Hajjaj az-Zaalim, Yusuf as-Saqaafee, a very cruel ruler during the time of the khilafah of Sayyidina `Umar (r).
The people asked him, “Why aren’t you like Sayyidina `Umar (r)? Didn’t you learn anything from him?”
He said, “If you become like Sayyidina Abi Dharr, a good one, then I will become like Sayyidina `Umar (r).”
Abi Dharr (r) was very ascetic who lived alone with his wife away from people, and he said, “If you all become like him, a good one, I will become like Sayyidina `Umar, a just one.”
So Mawlana says that if you become of the People of Obedience, Ahlu Ta`a, Allah will put on top of you the People of Mercy and if you are from disobedient ones, then Allah will put the people of `iqaab, the People of Punishment on top of you. So what Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) is teaching what you must do if you are facing injustice or oppression, he says `alla Muslim. When Egypt and all of Africa was in turmoil, he said, “O people! All of you go to the masajid and say “hasbun Allahu wa ni`mal-wakeel” (3:173) from morning to evening, then Allah will change the people in charge! But all Muslims have to go to the masjid and make tadura`a, supplicate with humility and great sincerity, from morning to evening, then He will change the leaders. Don’t be outside like animals, be a worshipper.”
That is what we do, we ask Allah to shelter us from tyrants and ask for good ones, just ones, ask for leaders with compassion and love in their hearts. May Allah keep good ones on top of us and replace the bad ones. So he says if you are from people of obedience, your rulers will be good, and if you are disobedient, then bad ones will be on top of you. So you choose, O human beings, start with yourself! Leaders being good depends on us being good. May Allah (swt) forgive us. Don't listen to the teaching of angry ones as anger never makes goodness. The outcome of anger is always fire that burns the person as well as whoever is in front, so don’t curse those in authority: know that Allah (swt) has put them there and that He can take them away from their posts.
May Allah make us to be from those who listen to the teachings of Awliyaullah!
وَكَذَلِكَ نُوَلِّي بَعْضَ الظَّالِمِينَ بَعْضًا بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَ
And in this manner do We cause evildoers to seduce one another by means of their (evil) doings. (Surah Al-An`am, 6:129)
We are saying facts. There is also a Hadith mentioned by Awliyaullah in which the Prophet (s) said: “There will be a time in my Nation when their rulers rule by corruption and injustice, and their `ulama are greedy, and the worshippers worship to show off, and their women are after the decoration of dunya.” Now you see our Muslim ladies outside (in public). This is that time. May Allah keep us away from such tests. Know your time.
Allah (swt) will put corrupt ones over corrupt ones. And Rasoolullah (s) mentioned the Hadith:
As you are, your ruler will be. (Bayhaqi in Sha’b al-Imaan)
So the problem is not the rulers, it is us: we are corrupt, we are bad ones, so we must turn to Allah in repentance and to ask forgiveness. We must turn back to Allah and He will bring a just ruler. Yaa Rabbee! We are asking forgiveness, replace the feet with the head! Yaa Rabbee, replace the evil ones with good ones who will spread goodness to all human beings, who will spread love and mercy along all continental borders! Yaa Rabbee, bring peace and happiness back to this world! Yaa Rabbee, we are asking forgiveness from You, Our Lord, ameen, ameen, ameen.
Bi hurmati ‘l-habeeb bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
