Our Knowledge Comes From Our Mashaykh

Shaykh Nour Mohamad Kabbani

28 December 2024 Los Angeles, California USA

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.

Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Let evil go out of our majlis. Let evil ideas and evil intentions out of the majlis of dhikrullah. We always say, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. That is the reality of, fa firru ila ‘Llah. Escape to Allah (swt). What is escaping to Allah (swt)? Leave Shaytan. That is the real escape to Allah (swt), when you leave friendship with Shaytan.

Always repeat, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Yaa Rabbee, I am confirming and I am asking and running to You from him. I don’t want to befriend him anymore. As long as a Muslim has not unfriended Shaytan, he is not running to Allah (swt). That is what Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said and we ask madad from them first.

Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi, yaa Sultan al-Awliya. Madad, yaa RijaalAlah. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. First, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Second, Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, when you say, Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem, you have grown your hook to Heavens and it will catch something. It will catch one Waliyullah, it will catch one mala’ikah or it will catch something that will inspire you to speak good words. It will inspire your heart to purity. If you don’t say, Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem, and start right away, your words are not supported by the Heavens. Your words are supported by your own desires.

Many people don’t start with, A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Right away they say, “Hello. As-salamu `alaykum,” and they start. No, you have to keep adab. Fa firru ila ‘Llah. Run to Allah (swt). We are running to Him and we are asking from the Mercy of that Holy Name, Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem, to cover all of us.

I am not an `alim. My teacher always taught me, kun talibun, be a student. Talib is a student. Don’t claim, “I am an `alim.” That is not correct manners. Actually, that is the teaching of Allah (swt) to Rasoolullah and He told him:

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا

Wa qul rabbi zidnee `ilma.

but say, "O my Lord! advance me in knowledge." (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114)

Have you ever heard that before? Never claim that you are the one who knows everything. Allah (swt) was even teaching Rasoolullah (s) and that’s why his khuluq, his manners, his conduct, his etiquette, his ethics, physically and spiritually, was according to the Holy Qur’an.

Where is our knowledge from Rasoolullah (s)? It's a drop in the ocean of his knowledge, if it can reach that. Never claim that you know something. That is against what the Qur’an tells you. Always say, “Yaa Rabbee, increase my knowledge,” as the Qur’an tells you. The Qur’an also says:

وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌ

Wa fawqa kulli dhi `ilmin `aleem.

But over all endued with knowledge is one, the All-Knowing. (Surah Yusuf, 12:76)

Above every knower is another knower. Mashaa-Allah, today I grabbed a book from Hajjah Soraya’s big tables full of books at her house. SubhaanAllah, I can never reach the `ilm in that book. Musnad Ahlu ‘l-Bayt. Somebody has written so many things that I have never heard of, I never imagined and I haven’t learned. I was humbled by the knowledge of that author, but it was not his knowledge, he brought it from somewhere else. From where? He says, “I learned it from my shaykh, and his shaykh from his shaykh.” This is in Shari`ah. He’s not talking about tariqah. He is talking about Ahadith of Rasoolullah (s). They reach up to the 30th or 35th name that I have never heard of and that one says, “I heard from Rasoolullah (s).”

Look at the adab. No matter how much you know, you are quoting the one above you. That is the adab of everybody, especially myself, to teach myself, “Look, Allah (swt) humbled you down. He made you pick out a book and see that the author has exceeded your knowledge. You will never reach his knowledge.” He wrote it in Arabic. His Arabic is better than mine by a hundred percent and he translated it into English. Half of it is in Arabic and half of it is in English.

His English is also very high. I don’t understand it. His Arabic is also extreme fusha. I don’t understand it but I know that he is quoting the shuyookh. That is what we call the chain of the Hadith. Who told you that? “This one and that one.”

[Your father, Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (q) gave him the information.]

Yeah, he says that. The author is lining up all the shuyookh above him that he learned from them and they learned from the one above, the one above, and all of that knowledge goes to Sahaabah Ikram (r) who heard from the master, Rasoolullah (s).

All of them humbled themselves in front of Rasoolullah (s). Which shaykh or which imam or which professor nowadays humbles themselves down in front of Rasoolullah (s). Few, those who have taken the good teachers. Those who have taken the wrong teachers, you see them towering on their big thrones, lecturing everybody under them. That is not adab.

I have learned and I always follow what my teachers say, that holy verse, wa qul Rabbi zidni `ilma. O my Lord, You increase my knowledge. He will send the right channels to increase your knowledge. Basically we speak of hikmah. We leave the `ilm to ahlu ‘l-`ilm: Imam Shafi’i (r), Imam Ahmad (r), Imam Abu Hanifa (r) and Imam Malik (r) and under them all of those who have followed their madaahib are ahlu ‘l-`ilm. We are following what they have said. That’s why you have to have a madhab. You cannot say, “I know better than them.” Alhamdulillah, we follow a madhab.

The inward knowledge is Hikmah, wisdom. Allah (swt) says: Wa yu `allimuhumu ‘l-Kitaba wa ‘l-Hikmah.

"Our Lord! send amongst them an Messenger of their own, who shall rehearse Your Signs to them and instruct them in scripture and wisdom, and sanctify them: For You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:129)

We have sent them a Messenger to teach them the Book, which is basically the rules and regulations, the requirements, the verdicts and whatever you need in this outward life, but also to teach them Hikmah, wisdom. Allah (swt) said and I heard this from my teachers:

يُؤْتِى ٱلْحِكْمَةَ مَن يَشَآءُ وَمَن يُؤْتَ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِىَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّآ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

Wa man yuta ‘l-hikmata fa qad uti’ya khayran katheera.

He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted receive indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:269)

Whoever I grant wisdom (...) yu`ta means he is granted. You don’t go buy it. You don’t go acquire it. You don’t achieve it. He didn’t say, wa man yu`ta al-Hikmah, whoever goes and learns. Ityan means to be granted, to be given. Whoever is given hikmah has been given so much khayr. We talk about the wisdom that we have learned from our shuyookh. Hudan li ‘l-muttaqeen.

This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:2)

The Qur’an has come as huda, but to muttaqeen, not to everybody. There is huda li ‘n-naas, those who accept, but those who accept Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem, it is certainly the way for them to Allah (swt)’s Divine Presence.

What is muttaqee? The pious one, the righteous one, those who fear God, the God conscious. Who are they? Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said and you can have volumes to explain what muttaqee is. He explained it in two or three words in Turkish and I am just translating. They are those who when Allah (swt) looks at their hearts, He sees their hearts pointing to Him. Muttaqee is whenever Allah (swt) looks at His servant, He sees His servant looking at Him. That means you are always in the Hudhoor of Allah (swt). Allah (swt) is never away from your heart. Whenever He looks at the heart of His servant, He sees Himself in it. That is muttaqee, the righteous and pious ones.

If your heart deviates to other than Allah (swt) then you have turned your face away from Allah (swt). You have gone out of that line. The guidance of Allah (swt), Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem, the guidance of Rasoolullah (s) benefits those whose hearts are always facing Allah (swt). Their hearts are always directed to Allah (swt), nothing else. The minute you direct your heart to dunya, you are directing your heart away from Allah (swt).

Be careful, O Muslim. Always keep your heart looking at Allah (swt). That is the meaning of Qibla. “I am turning to Qibla.” What does that mean? I am turning towards my Lord. Allah (swt) put a physical Qibla. Direct your face to Ka`aba Mu’azhzhama and you will be pointing yourself to My Divine Presence. Where is the heart? Mashaa-Allah, your face is turned towards the Qibla and your heart is turned toward Bollywood, Hollywood, politics or whatever it is. Your heart is somewhere else. Allah (swt) always wants your heart facing Him. The minute you move then you have moved your face away from Qibla. May Allah (swt) put us back.

Awliyaullah are those whose faces are always directed towards Qibla. Allah (swt) described Awliyaullah in the Holy Qur’an, asta`eedhu billah:

أَلَآ إِنَّ أَوْلِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

Alaa inna Awliyaullahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa la hum yahzanuoon

Behold! verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surah Yunus, 10:62)

Alladheena amanoo wa kaanoo yattaqoon

Those who believe and (constantly) guard against evil. (Surah Yunus, 10:63)

They believe and they have become muttaqee. That means they have believed in Qur’anu ‘l-Kareem and the guidance of Rasoolullah (s) and they turn their faces only to Allah (swt). Their hearts or faces are never away from Allah (swt). These are true Awliyaullah.

They asked Rasoolullah (s), “Yaa Rasoolullah. Who are Awliyaullah?” I heard from my teacher and I verified it on Islam Web, the Wahabi website, to see if the Hadith was there. Alhamdulillah, it was Hadith hasan wa sahahu ‘l-Albani. If you find Albani has conferred and put the seal on it, you’re great. Nobody can say anything. He is correcting Bukhari and Muslim. Allah (swt) knows best.

They asked, “Yaa Rasoolullah. Who are Awliyaullah?” Those who when they are seen, they make you remember Allah (swt) because their hearts, their faces, their beings are totally towards Allah (swt). In our madhab, Awliya can perform miracles. Others deny that but Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) quoted another Hadith and I checked it on Islam Web. Alhamdulillah, it was there. It was okay with them.

Their miracle is true. If they ask, it will happen and the Hadith goes: Law aqsama `ala ‘Llah la-abbarah, “someone who if he were to swear an oath by Allah, He (swt) would confirm it.”

Somebody who is not well kept, maybe somebody with long hair but has not combed it or a long beard that hasn’t been combed and they kick him out. Rasoolullah (s) is telling you about the characteristics of Awliyaullah. Somebody who does not look fancy like your brother here with a beautiful color on. I forgot my peacock tail and ornaments everywhere. I forgot my rings. Alhamdulillah, imams don’t have rocks in their ears. Alhamdulillahi Rabbi ‘l-`Alameen. I see some of them with turbans and holes in their ears. I just have color.

Awliyaullah are those who when you look at them, you don’t consider them because they don’t look majestic. They are running after looks. They put mascara on. Some put foundation on. They put colors on. They become fancy.

So, he is clean but he is not as fancy as you want him to be and when they come through the door, people don’t consider them as big ones. Have you read the story of the Wali who went to a feast? He was dressed okay. He was clean. He wanted to sit on the table but they didn’t allow him but he wasn’t proper according to them. So, he went out to the market to buy a very fancy jubbah. He came back and they said, “Wow. You’re a great one. Come.” They put him at the head of the table. They give him the soup and he says to jubbah, “Come and eat. They invited you.” He was telling the jubbah to eat because that’s what they looked at, not at him.

Awliyaullah are not always fancy looking. They are also not allowed through the doors. They are pushed away from the doors. They do not look fancy according to your standards. Law aqsama `ala ‘Llah. If he asks Allah (swt) and opens his hands, He will make what he asks happen. That is karaamatu ‘l-Awliya. Their du`a is their weapon.

What are the miracles of Anbiya? Do they make it or ask Allah (swt)? How did Isa (a) revive the dead? “By the permission of my Lord, not me. I make the du`a. Yaa Rabbee, revive this dead one as a miracle for those who don’t believe me. I will treat the blind, the one who has leprosy.” It means, “I will perform medical miracles by Your permission.”

The power of Awliyaullah is not in their person. The power of Awliyaullah is in their du`a. It is in their asking. If he asks Allah (swt), He will accept his du`a and make it happen. They can perform karamat and whatever is best for us.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) always tells us that the Awliya who were alive and able to ask Allah (swt), also when they pass away Allah (swt) does not take away that honor from them. They are not robbed of that honor. If Allah (swt) gives, He doesn’t take back. That does not befit Al-Kareem, the Generous One. Do you give someone something and then ask, “I will take it back”? You will not do it. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said when Awliya had that power in dunya, their hearts were always towards Allah.

Be careful. If you want to be Awliyaullah, your heart has to always be towards Allah (swt), not ever towards dunya. The minute you turn towards dunya, what happens?

Wa man yushaaqiqi’r-rasoola min ba`d maa tabayyan lahu’l-hudaa wa yattabi’ ghayra sabeeli ‘l-mu’mineena nuwallihi maa tawwalaa wa nuslihi Jahannam wa sa’at maseera.

If anyone contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell, what an evil refuge! (Surat an-Nisa, 4:115)

Whoever follows other than the way of mu’mins, the way of prophets and saints, We will direct him to the way that he has chosen. His end will not be My Presence. It will be somewhere else.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) has said your life in this world is like a railroad track but you are the conductor and when you come to a fork, you choose which way to take. There is something called a switch and they switch the track. The conductor calls the station and says, “Switch the track because I want to go that way.”

If you follow other than the way of mu’min, Wali and Nabi and those who are following to be from Awliyaullah, your goal has to be to reach where they have reached.

Oolaa’ika `alaa hudan mi ‘r-Rabbihim wa oolaa’ika humu ‘l-muflihoon.

They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:5)

If you want to reach success, you have to be riding on the guidance from Allah (swt). That means Allah (swt) is carrying you, not you walking. `Alaa huda, on guidance from their Lord. That is the Noor that He throws in your heart, the Noor that keeps your heart focused on Allah (swt). Awliyaullah are true ones but they are not how you imagine them to be. They can be just regular people that nobody cares about but they can perform miracles and ask Allah (swt) on your behalf. Allah (swt) does accept the du`a of the mu’min for his mu’min brother.

It is said that one man came to Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q). He said, “Yaa Sayyidi. I am a sinner. I want to repent to Allah (swt) in your presence because my Lord said, ‘If you commit a sin and the come to you, O Prophet, and they make istighfaar and you make istighfaar for them, I will accept their repentance.’” That is in Surah an-Nisa.

Wa maa arsalnaa mir-rasoolin illa yuta`a bi idhni ’Lllahi wa law annahum idh zhalamu anfusahum jaa’ooka fastaghfaroo’Llaha w ’astaghfara lahumu’r-rasoolu la-wajadoo’Llah tawaaban raheema.

We sent not an apostle, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the will of Allah. If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:64)

When they wrong themselves, they come to you. To whom? Rasoolullah (s). Wa ‘s-taghfirullah. They ask forgiveness and Rasoolullah (s) asks forgiveness for them. They will find Allah (swt) Forgiving, Merciful and accepting their repentance.

He said, “I cannot go, it’s too far but I come to you. You are Waliyullah. I want to repent to my Lord in front of you and you also ask forgiveness on my behalf.”

He said, “Inshaa-Allah, I will do that but what did you do?”

He said, “I am a grave robber.”

Back home that’s what they do, extra money at night. Back home we don’t have the veneers, the lumineers and all the fancy stuff you have here. We have gold and silver teeth. If you’re not rich enough, they have tin teeth.

He goes at night and grabs the teeth from the mouth. He takes the kafan. Extra money. He said, “Yaa Sayyidi. I have done this horrible job. I want forgiveness from my Lord. I have done wrong to so many people. I robbed them in their graves.”

He said, “Inshaa-Allah I will ask forgiveness but I have a question for you. How many people in the grave did you see still facing Qibla?”

When we bury the deceased, we try to position their body and face towards Qibla. He said, “Yaa Sayyidi. Out of a thousand, I’ve only seen two.” He robbed a thousand graves but only saw two people with their faces facing Qibla. He said, “I didn’t understand, but I didn’t care. I was just into what I was doing.”

He said, “The wisdom of that is that in dunya these people never faced Qibla, they never faced Allah (swt). They never directed their faces to Him. They always had another goal or direction. They said they were for Allah (swt) but they were for dunya. They said they would apply what Rasoolullah (s) guided us to do in this world but they played with that and they directed themselves somewhere else. Because their faces were not directed to Allah (swt) in dunya, to Qibla, in the grave the angels twisted them. They said, ‘You are khadab, a liar.’” They did not face Qibla, they faced dunya.

Be careful, O mu’min. Always keep your heart and physical face in prayer to Allah (swt).

Walladheena hum `alaa salatihim da’imoon.

Those who remain steadfast to their prayer. (Surat al-Ma`arij, 70:23)

What is da’imoon? Always. You cannot always be in prayer. Awliyaullah have said that it is not only physically in prayer, your heart has to be in salah. Salah is asking Allah (swt), conversing with Allah (swt), praising Allah (swt). By your heart, you are making Dhikrullah 24 hours a day, even when you sleep. Rasoolullah (s) said, “My eyes are closed but my heart is awake.”

If you reach that level of purity, of sainthood, you will look like you're sleeping but your heart is not. Your heart is in the Divine Presence, looking at Allah (swt)’s Beauty, taking from that Light, from that `Ilm, from that Hikmah and whatever is coming from Allah (swt)’s Manifestations. That heart is soaking it all in. What do they do with that? Do you think they keep it? Hudan li ‘l-muttaqeen. It continues.

Alladeena yu’minoona bi ‘l-ghaybi wa yuqimoona ‘s-salaata wa mimma razaqnahum yunfiqoon.

Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them. (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:3)

What does that mean? Whatever We give them, they give. The heart of Waliyullah, the heart of Nabiyullah, the heart of Khatmu ‘n-Nabi (s) is always in the Divine Presence, taking in 24 hours. What do they do with that? They give to the ones who are following them. They enrich them. They strengthen them. That’s the madad. They don’t keep it. “You want? I have. Even if you don’t want it, I’ll give.”

When you say, Muhammadun Rasoolullah (s), you acknowledge that he is the intermediary between you and Allah (swt). What is Rasool? Between me and somebody. You’re not with Allah (swt). There is Rasoolullah. Allah (swt) said, “I have sent you a Messenger, a Holy One, between Me and you.” They say, “Go to Allah (swt) directly.” Where is Rasoolullah (s)? You are denying all of Islam. You are only saying, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah. That’s what Yahood say. That’s what the other faiths say. Where is Muhammadun Rasoolullah? When they cancel Muhammadan Rasoolullah and say, “Go directly to Allah (swt),” how do you think their iman is? Allah (swt) knows better. We cannot say they are in or out. Leave it. But for us to know, Allah (swt) said, “I have sent to you an intermediary between Me and you. I give to him and he gives to you.”

That’s why his name is al-Kasim, the one who takes from `Arsh and divides it for the creation. Al-Kasim, the divider, the portioner, the one who gives out a portion. He takes whatever Allah (swt) manifests on `Arsh.

Ar-Rahman `alaa ‘l-`Arshi ‘s-stawa.

(Allah) Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne (of authority). (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:5)

That Sifatu ‘r-Rahman, that Attribute of the Compassionate, the Merciful, is coming down on `Arsh and from `Arsh goes down to all creation. The one who receives it from `Arsh is Rasoolullah (s) and he divides it among people according to their needs. When they cancelled Rasoolullah (s), they went wild. Do you see how wild they are now?

[They’re in Las Vegas.]

Who, the wild ones? No, in their homelands they have become wild. They don’t have to fly out of their homelands. May Allah (swt) forgive us.

Awliyaullah are true. Awliyaullah exist. Awliyaullah is not what you imagine: a famous one, a glorious one, a decorative one. They can be someone that we do not even consider but his power is in his du`a and that power does not disappear after their death. Allah (swt) does not dishonor them, rather He gives them more.

Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q) said, their faces stayed towards Qibla because they were truthful while they were in dunya. “I am for my Lord.” Their hearts were always connected to Allah (swt). The heart doesn’t sleep, it always takes and they give to whoever they want. When you accompany Awliyaullah or when you go to their presence, whether they are alive or resting in their graves until Yaumu ‘l-Qiyamah, they will continue to give. Don’t forget.

That is Aqeedah Ahlu ‘s-Sunnah wa ‘l-Jama`ah. That is our belief. The other beliefs are up to them. They can answer however they want but our belief is that karamatu ‘l-Awliya is Haqq. Awliyaullah exist and Awliyaullah are muttaqee. Be like them. When you are asleep, let your heart be busy with Dhikrullah. If you can reach that state, I will come to you and follow you. That’s what you need to follow. You need to follow the one who has in his heart or her heart, because there are lady saints too. The ladies follow the lady saints and the men follow the men saints or the women also follow the men saints, but you have to find somebody whose heart is never away even for one second from the Hudhoor of Allah (swt). Otherwise, they are not da’imoon, continuous. There is no interruption.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. I think it’s enough. Astaghfirullah. I’m not a scholar or `alim but I have learned a few things from my teacher and inshaa-Allah, we can continue to learn from them wisdom, what makes us direct ourselves to Allah (swt) rather than directing ourselves to dunya. There are so many people who teach you about dunya. They tell you the different ways of dunya. Very few people are left that are reminding people of Allah (swt) and Akhirah. Some people believe in God but they are not taking the way of God.

So many people say there is Allah (swt), the Lord of Heavens. They believe in a Creator but they are not taking the way of Akhirah. We have taken that way. inshaa-Allah we reach the door of Jannah and enter by the shafa`ah of Rasoolullah (s). Don’t say, “I can enter Jannah with my `amal.” That is also tarku ‘l-adab, no adab. Rasoolullah (s) himself said, “I will not enter Jannah with my `amal, but only with the Rahmah of Allah (swt).” The shafa`ah of Rasoolullah (s) is how we can enter. Don’t cancel Muhammadan Rasoolullah (s). Don’t say, “I will reach by myself, no need for one in the middle.” Don’t be like that.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. I think it’s enough and I think everyone is sleeping. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said there were two friends. One of them couldn’t sleep at night. He always took Valium and Xanax and other pills to sleep. His friend told him, “O my friend, come with me. I know a masjid. During Jumu`ah you can take a beautiful nap.” When some imams go up there to speak, they go to sleep. I put people to sleep too. It’s like a bedtime story.

That sleep comes because your heart is not awake to the words of that man because he is an `alim but doesn’t act. There are so many people who know a lot of things but they don’t act on what they are teaching. You have to find an `alim who acts on what he learned and he teaches what he learned. If you find a great `alim but doesn’t do what he says, that is not a murshid. Be careful. May Allah (swt) forgive us. From Allah (swt) is the success and tawfeeq.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
