`Asr Suhbah

[On video, suhbah begins at 35:30.]

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an:

تُعِزُّ مَن تَشَاء وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَاءبِيَدِكَ الْخَيْرُ إِنَّكَ عَلَىَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ)

He raises up whom He likes and puts down whom He likes. And His Hand is All Good, verily You have the Power to Will anything.

(Surat Ali Imraan, 3:26)

No one can understand that, even Awliyaullah are surprised and astonished by this ayah. In a moment, Allah can raise someone up or bring them down and no one can object. Awliyaullah know to object to this is forbidden, so they continue to work until they die. Some Awliya even disappear from their graves after they die. So however someone will be raised, they will one day come down, and the example of this is Sayyidina Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q).

One day, he was sitting by himself praising Sayyidina Muhammad (s), reaching nearer and nearer, hoping that he will be praised. Allah made him forget that ayah, but let him go deep in its meaning, where he found he was unable to understand and reach it. As he sat in his huge mosque, which could easily accommodate five thousand people inside and out, he smelled a very nice fragrance coming from the opposite side: it was the beautiful fragrance of his shaykh. At that moment, he was raised to a level that no shaykh in the Tariqat an-Naqshbandiyya al-`Aliyah was able to reach. He tried his best to follow that smell, as he knew it was special.

Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q) tried his best to follow that smell through alleys of that city, and he found it led him to the other masjid where his shaykh, Sayyid Amir al-Kulal (q), was sitting with his mureeds making dhikrullah, yahdinee wa yahdeekumullah, reaching there, hoping to learn something about that ayah, yu`izzu man yashaau wa yudhillu man yashaa, “He raises up whom He likes and puts down whom He likes.”

And he understood the meaning of that ayah is death, that one moment up is to be alive and one moment down is death, the soul taken away.

For him, that was a specialty, to enter that masjid where his shaykh was, and when he entered the shaykh scolded him, we cannot repeat all of what he said, (but in summary), “How dare you enter here! This is a majlis of mutahhireen, for clean people! Go clean yourself and don't come back until you are cleaned!”

That was Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q); if he was scolded like that, how will we be scolded? So what did he do? He just stood there, and the shaykh ordered some mureeds to throw him out. That is Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q) under that ayah. We are all under that ayah. What will we do if our shaykh throws us out?

So when he was thrown out, the angels opened for him Maqaam al-Asraar, Maqaam as-Sirr, the Level of Secrets and the Level of Secret of Secrets. Like bees are connected to their queen and then they give you honey, here awliyaullah connect themselves and they give you honey. You taste the honey and are happy for one hour, two hours, one month, two months, then become thumma aamanoo thumma kafaroo (4:137), one moment good people and one moment bad people. Insha'Allah you are here and Allah yaftah `alaykum jami`yyan wa nahnu ma`akum, may Allah open for all of you and may we be with you.

So what did he do? He went to the second masjid and put his head on the threshold and said, “I will not leave this place until things clear up,” because he knew secrets and that the situation was unusual, and the verse yu`izzu man yashaau wa yudhillu man yashaa wa huwa `alaa kulli shayin qadeer.

Fira`un and the one who is carrying, or who has been carried with something like kahashawk, thorns, and being carried high on floor, the other mureeds, that is the amr, so what can they do? So he was in pain, and what could he do? He went into sajda at the masjid threshold and said, “Yaa Rabbee! I will not leave this position until that secret is clarified to me,” and he didn't raise his head until Fajr; he remained in the same position, in sajda, asking forgiveness from his shaykh, from Prophet (s), and from Allah (swt).

As soon as forgiveness was granted--because Shah Naqshband (q) didn't give up, he stayed in that position, knowing that test was coming from a higher level. There are many thing in life that bring us up and bring us down, and in Tariqah you have to carry it and see everything is coming from the Divine Presence. If we don't believe that, then there is no need to waste our time!

So his shaykh sent two people who brought him, cleaned him, and perfumed him with `ood, and the shaykh said, “You have to know Allah has dressed us with the power, the meaning of the ayah, yu`izzu man yashaau wa yudhillu man yashaa. So don't allow the bad thoughts that come to you to enter your heart, keep yourself clean. I am saying this to all of us here: keep yourself clean as there is no way out, there is no escape! Once you enter Tariqah, if you try to find an escape, an exit, there is none: once you're in, you're in! Many people search for a way to run away, a short cut. They don't find one because it is done (final). Anything you think can save you, nothing can save you except the murshid! We all have our murshid, we know the reality, and we say, “Yaa Rabbee! Keep us with them as they are our way to You.”

That runway is not a runway as we understand, that is a runway of ma`arif that is open for you to a higher level of secrecy in the Tariqah, not in a dunya level, we are speaking of Akhirah. So be open to what we have in front of us and inshaa-Allah one day we will meet awliyaullah and we are asking for them to open that door for us.

One time, I saw Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q); he is big, stocky, not very tall, his height is almost medium, his beard white, but the beard is split and as long as your arm. He appeared to me at Grandshaykh's house. He can reach that wall in two spans if his arms and his hands are very big, like four average sized hands.

Shah Bahauddin Naqshband (q) is one of the Nine Awliya that have the Secret of Secrets, which we call Sultan al-Dhikr, which to explain further needs a complete session. Inshaa-Allah if we are here next week we explain Sultan al-Dhikr.

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah. Taqabal-Allah. Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammadin wa `alaa aali Muhammadin wa sallim `ala Sayyidina Muhammad (s).
