O Mumin: Allah (swt) Calls You Back by Means of Testing

Dr. Nour Kabbani

Jumu`ah Khutbah

Alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah.

O Mu’mins! O Believers! We have just entered Shahr Mawlid an-Nabawi ash-Shareef. Today is the first Jumu’ah in this holy month, the birth of the Master and Best of Creation, Rasoolullah (s). He was born to deliver the last Message,Allah’s (swt) wahiyy, al-Qur’an al-Kareem.

O Human Being! You are in need of the Mercy of Allah (swt) and guidance.

[For although] We did say, "Down with you all from this [state]," nonetheless, there will most certainly come guidance from Me to you, and those who follow My guidance will have no fear and nor will they grieve. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:38)

When Allah (swt) sent Adam (a) to Earth, He said, “Expect from Me huda.” Faman tabi`a hudaaya, “No fear nor grief will hit the one who follows My guidance.”

O Mu’min! Allah (swt) wants you back. He created you not for this dunya, but for Akhirah, for Jannah, but He certainly will test you in this dunya. He said, wa la-nabluwannakum, “We will let something touch you, go around inside and outside of you.”

Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:155)

Something like what? O Allah, Yaa Rabbee! Like what? Wa la-nabluwannakum bi shayin mina ‘l- khawfi. O Insaan! O ghaafil! You are unaware of what the Lord of Heavens said to you. The Lord of Heavens has honored you with His Kalam, Speech, and has put you in a state in which He is talking to you.

How many of you want to speak to the president? How many of you are running with this man and that man, with this agency, with that agency? “Please let me have a moment with the mayor, the governor, the congressman/congresswoman.” You are always asking for a moment. Some people work for years to get that one moment, with whom? With a man like you: `ibaadun amthaalukum, somebody like you, `aajiz.

Allah (swt) has honored you and put you in a state that you are high up, listening to His Kalaam. He is telling you what will happen to you. Qur’an al-Kareem has taught all the information you need, but we are ghafil. Wa alladheena hum `an ayaatinaa ghaafiloon.

Verily, as for those who do not believe that they are destined to meet Us, but satisfy themselves with the life of this world and do not look beyond it, and are heedless of Our Messages. (Surat Yunus, 10:7)

They sit in their homes watching soccer, cricket, football, baseball and wa hum `an ayaatinaa ghaafiloon, “They are unaware of Our Messages to them.” What did Allah (swt) say in Surah al-Baqarah? Maybe you don’t speak Arabic, okay, we understand; but there are translations. Why don’t you open that translation of whatever scholar you want and read? He is saying, Wa lanabluwannakum bi shayin mina ‘l- khawfi, “We will send you fear.”

Look now, fear has encompassed the world. They don’t know where it came from. Where does that come from? From Allah’s (swt) Divine Presence. Is anything created if Allah (swt) doesn’t believe it? No. If you say “yes” then you are out of Islam. Hal min khaaliqin ghayru 'Llah. Is there any other Creator than Allah (swt)? No.

O human beings! Call to mind the blessings which Allah has bestowed upon you! Is there any Creator other than God that could provide sustenance from Heaven and Earth for you? There is no deity save Him: and yet, how perverted your minds are! (Surat Fatir, 35:3)

He is saying, “I will test you through fear,” and see how fear has engulfed the world. Wa lanabluwannakum bi shayin mina ‘l- khawfi wa ‘l-j`oo. Hunger. Some people are only eating rats because they have no more food. They’re eating bushes, plants, whatever they find as they have no food. Mina ‘l- khawfi wa ‘l-joo`i wa naqsin mina ‘l-amwaali wa ‘l-anfusi wa ‘th-thamaraat, “We will test you with less money.” How many people lost money? So many. Wa anfus. How many people lost lives? So many. Wa ‘th-thamaraat. How many people lost fruits? The fruit of my life, my life work is gone.

Allah (swt) is promising tests. A Mu’min is not afraid. A Mu’min is not somebody unaware of the future. A Mu’min knows that something is going to come to him, so where does he go? Allah (swt) is continuing in that Holy Surah. Wa bashiri ‘s-sabireen. Mu’min goes to the door of sabr, patience. Why? Because, inna 'Llah yuhhibbu 's-sabireen, Allah (swt) will love you. Inna 'Llah yuhibbu 't-tawaabeen, Allah (swt) loves the one who repents. You will always sin, now, then and in the future. We are not ma`soom. We are not prophets, but Allah (swt) will give us `ismat, will prevent us from doing such a thing and we are not wali who are mahfoozh. Allah (swt) keeps them and protects them. We are human beings, we make mistakes. What do you do? You say, astaghfirullah. Inna 'Llah yuhibbu 't-tawaabeen. Allah (swt) loves the one who repents.

It is said that Sayyidina Adam (a) has eaten from that tree so the door of muhabba, the door of Divine Love opens to him. Because when he repented he said, yaa Rabbee! Zhalamna anfusana! “Yaa Rabbee! We have done wrong. Forgive us.” He entered from the door of tawbah. Allah’s (swt) Door of Love opened to him.

Inna 'Llah yuhhibbu 'l-muttatahireen. Allah (swt) loves the ones who purify themselves from sins, from bad actions, from bad deeds. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re a bad one. Know that the Door of Love of the Lord is open for you. Allah Almighty has opened that Door of Love to you if you try to clean yourself from badness. These are all doors of love that Allah (swt) has delivered to you through the message that Rasoolullah (s) has come with. Rasoolullah (s) has come with doors of love of Allah (swt). Inna 'Llah yuhhibbu 's-sabireen. Allah (swt) loves those who are patient.

When this spear hits you, when this loss of wealth hits you, when this loss of life hits you, what do you do? Do you beat yourself up? No. You are patient. Wa bashiri ‘s-sabireen. When you are patient, Allah (swt) will send you the glad tiding. Alladheena idhaa asaabat-hum museebatun. When calamity hits them, qaaloo innaa lillahi wa innaa ilayhi raji`oon.

Who, when calamity befalls them, say, "Verily, unto God do we belong and, verily, unto Him we shall return." (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:156)

We are for Him. We are His. He does whatever He wants with us, and that is very hard. It is very hard to let the will of yourself down, and the Will of Allah (swt) up. Allah (swt) wants something but you want something else. Allah (swt) loves the one who accepts and that is Islam.

What is Islam? Islam is not only praying and fasting and going to Hajj. Islam is accepting what Allah (swt) has decreed. Wa bi 'l-qadiri khayrihi wa sharrihi.

Aamantu billahi wa malaa’ikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wa bi ‘l-yawmi ‘l-aakhir wa bi ‘l-qadri khayrihi wa sharrihi min Allahi ta`ala wa bi’l-ba`tha ba`d al-mawti haqq.

I believe in the existence and oneness of Allah, His angels, His books, His prophets, and I believe in the Day of Judgement, and in Destiny, that everything good or evil is from Allah, and I believe in life after death (and resurrection.) All of them are true and right. (Imaan al-Mufassil)

In destiny there is khayr. When the khayr gets you, you say, “Yaa Rabbee! Shukr. Alhamdulillah.” When the shar hits you, you become sabiru. You are between patience and thanking, patience for the hardship and thanking for the favors of Allah (swt).

Rasoolullah (s) came to deliver such messages, but what do human beings do? They neglect it. In the beginning they said, “You are somebody like us. This is only the kalaam of a human being.” Allah (swt) is saying, wa ’in kuntum fee raybin, “If you doubt from what We have sent down on Our `abd.”

And if you doubt any part of what We have, bestowed from on high, step by step, upon Our servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah of similar merit, and call upon any other than God to bear witness for you-if what you say is true! (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:23)

Look how Allah (swt) is calling Rasoolullah (s), `AbdAllah, “Mine, Ours.” How beautiful when Allah (swt) calls you, “Yaa `abdee! You are for Me, you are Mine,” and you are His, but you can be a good `abd or a bad `abd. Even Shaytan is an `Abd, but a bad one. Every Creation of Allah (swt) belongs to Him, a good one or a bad one. Nobody can go out of `uboodiyya, servanthood, worship of Allah (swt).

He said, “If you doubt what We have sent down on Our servant, on Our beloved, wa ’in kuntum fi raybin mimma nazzalna `aala `abdina fa'too bi-sooratin min mithlihi. Look, Allah (swt) opened a challenge to human beings for 1,500 years. If you say that this Qur’an al-Kareem, this Wahi, Revelation is not from the Divine Presence, why don’t you bring something like it? A Surah as we know has a beginning and an end and the minimum content is three aayaat. He told you, “Compose three aayaat and bring forth all of your professors that are so proud of. Bring forth all of your elite and all your learned ones, even the jinn to help you. Compose three verses.” Wad`oo shuhada'akum min dooni' Llah, “Call anybody you want besides Allah, in kuntum saadiqeen, call everybody to compose three verses.”

Until now, did anybody compose three verses at the level of the Holy Qur’an? Nobody has. The ones who claimed that they have, all the false prophets that came after Rasoolullah (s) were not prophets: they were claimants. They came with words. Even the people at that time laughed at them, but they accepted them because they did not want Islam and they rejected Rasoolullah (s).

Until now, that challenge is open for humanity. Bring three verses like Rasoolullah (s) has brought. If you claim he has a mind like you, he has a body like you, he has language like you, bring something like that. Until now nobody has ever brought anything similar to the Holy Qur’an. Why? Because in reality nothing can be similar to Kalaamullah or Sifaatullah, Allah’s (swt) Attributes. Laysa kamithlihi shay’un, “Nothing is like Him,” not from His Kalaam (Words), not from His Sifaat (Characteristics), not from His Dhaat (Essence). They can never bring anything similar to Kalamullah! Nothing is like Him, but He posed that challenge and until now that message is open for non-Muslims: bring forth something like that.

And if you cannot do it, and most certainly you cannot do it, then be conscious of the Fire whose fuel is human beings and stones that awaits all who deny the truth! (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:24)

When Rasoolullah (s) is speaking the Holy Qur’an, he’s revealing Ghayb (Unseen) and that is valid until now. Allah (swt) said, fa-in lam taf`aloo, it’s still valid. If you don’t bring something like Qur’an al-Kareem, and this is the month of the Birth of Rasoolullah (s), the one upon whom the Qur’an has been revealed to his heart and onto his tongue. It came to us to know about our Lord. “If you cannot bring something like that then you have to believe that the Qur'an is My Book. You have to believe that Muhammad (s) is My Messenger.”

Until now they cannot and can never bring anything against that or similar to that. Until now, they do not believe in Muhammad (s), Sayyidu 'r-Rasool, the Master of all Messengers. They have not accepted him yet, but the door is open. Allah (swt) can open that door. They have until their last breath to believe in Rasoolullah (s). This is what Rasoolullah (s) has said in a Hadith mentioned by both Imam Bukhari and Muslim: “One of you will perform deeds of Ahlu ‘l-Jannah: praying, fasting, going to Hajj, doing everything proper according to Islam, until between him and Jannah is this much.”

And then what does he do? Allah’s (swt) destiny comes to him and he performs the deeds of Ahlu ‘n-Naar and he enters naar. One can be Muslim all his life, but at the last moment do something wrong. Be careful how Sayyidina `Azra’eel (a) will catch you! Will it be on the way of Allah (swt) or the way of Shaytan? O Muslim! He is after you.

Non-Muslims are already doing according to what they like, but you go according to what Allah (swt) likes. Same thing for non-Muslims: they will perform deeds of Ahlu ‘n-Naar, the People of the Fire, until there are a few inches between them and the Fire, and then they accept Islam and enter Jannah.

Look at how much mercy is being carried to humanity through these ahadeeth. Even if somebody is a Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, or a Jew from Ahlu ‘l-Kitaab, People of the Book, or any other religion that they invented, if Allah (swt) has written for them to become Muslim and mu’min, at the end of their lives they will enter Jannah. Don’t take anybody as an enemy, a foe. Don’t put anybody down, don’t belittle anyone. Respect them, because you don’t know how they will end.

These are the subtle teachings of Rasoolullah (s). Look at how merciful his heart is. He is telling you how to be in this Ummah. Be very tolerant towards non-Muslims, because they might accept Islam at the last moment, and you must be afraid, because you might lose Islam at the last moment. Don’t depend on your `amal, depend on the Mercy of Allah (swt)! Always say, “Yaa Rabbee! Make my last words Shahadah and my last action sajda, inshaa-Allah. Make my last `amal goodness that you like, yaa Rabbee, so I can be on Your Way.” It can happen to us at any time.

May Allah (swt) forgive all of us, especially those whom we have hurt. We have all made mistakes. May we always come back to the Door of Allah (swt), and this Jumu`ah is one of them. To the young ones here, always come to Jumu`ah because as Rasoolullah (s) has told us, “Between Jumu`ah and Jumu`ah, Allah (swt) forgives all your sins as long as you avoid the big ones.” Alhamdulillah, we avoid the big ones, but still if you sin, come. Don’t let go of Jumu`ah.

Don’t say, “My work is important.” You might die before your work is finished. You might go to Heavens. Allah (swt) is waiting for you. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji`oon. That is the continuation of that Holy Verse. “We are from Him and we will return to Him.” Be patient, because Allah (swt) is promising you:

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَٰتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُهْتَدُونَ

They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:157)

If you are a patient one, Allah (swt) will send His Mercy and Blessings upon you and then He will guide you to the Right Way, the way of Rasoolullah (s). Hold tight to the Sunnah of Rasoolullah (s). Find out what Rasoolullah has done.

Everybody wants to be rich. They ask how did Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates make it? Why don’t you learn how Rasoolullah (s) made it? How do you become Habeebullah and `AbdAllah? No restrictions, no name, just "servant", `abd.

Allah said, wadhkur `abdanaa Dawood, wadhkur `abdanaa Ayyoob, wadhkur `ibaadanaa Ibraheema wa Ishaaqa wa Ya`qoob, “Mention Our servant Dawood, mention Our servant Ayyoob, and mention Our servants Ibraheem, Ishaaq and Ya`qoob.” He did not say, w 'adhkur `abdanaa Muhammad, "And mention My Servant Muhammad" in all of the Holy Qur’an. When Allah (swt) spoke of Rasoolullah (s), He gave him absolute openness of servanthood as he (s) is the perfect servant. Why? Because he lived only for Allah (swt).

Glory to (Allah), Who took His servant for a Journey. (Surat al-Israa’, 17:1)

It is said, ta’maloo `uboodiyya fee kamali huriyya `ama siwallahi, “If you are free from other than Allah (swt), you are a perfect servant.”

People talk about freedom. The ultimate freedom is to be free of this world and its desires, free of anything that exists, to be out of the Realm of Existence, in the Realm of The One Who Perpetually Exists, al-Qayyum. By Him you exist.

How do you get there? Follow the Sunnah of Rasoolullah (s). Eventually you will reach what Rasoolullah (s) reached. That’s why he came back to you: to show you the way to Allah Almighty, the Lord of Heavens. Hold on tight to the Sunnah. Learn about Rasoolullah (s), what he did and what he opened. Learn about Allah (swt), especially in this holy month. That’s why Mawlid is recited, because it mentions the Seerah and praise of Rasoolullah, his good characteristics. Why do some fight it? We are mentioning Allah's Beloved! Try to be like him, to know about him and to praise him. Allah praised him! Allah called him "Muhammad, the Praised One".

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you that believe! Send blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:56)

Allah is honoring him. What’s wrong with honoring the Prophet (s) and knowing what he has done or how he lived? These are all the Mawlids, which include the Seerah, biography of Rasoolullah (s). Participate and learn!

The only way is:

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Fear the Fire, which is prepared for those who reject Faith. (Surat Aali- `Imraan, 3:131)

If you cannot bring three verses like these words of Qur’an al-Kareem, then be careful from that fire. It means when you take the Qur’an and the Seerah of Rasoolullah (s), you are safe from that punishment. That is the fruit of taking the Holy Qur’an and taking the Seerah of Rasoolullah (s) as your way in this world. If you adhere to it correctly, it will help you.

May Allah (swt) always make us from those who follow the Sunnah, the Qur’an al-Kareem, the teachings of Islam.
