Jumu`ah Khutbah

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.

Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

O mu’mins, Believers! May Allah (swt) allow us to always take the path of Rasoolullah (s) and follow his footsteps. He has called humanity to Jannah, to happiness here and Hereafter. Those who follow him are honored here and in the Hereafter.

Those who did not follow him or other messengers in their times were dishonored here and will be dishonored in the Hereafter. Whomever followed the messengers are remembered and who did not are forgotten. Those who were good to others are remembered, while tyrants are forgotten. Those who followed Rasoolullah (s) are remembered. Those who follow Shaytan are forgotten.

Asta`eedhu billah:

Inna kayda shaytani kaana da`eefa.

Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject faith fight in the cause of evil. So fight against the friends of Satan as feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan. (Surah an-Nisa, 4:76)

The power, tricks, and promises of Shaytan are weak, useless and actually have no power. That’s what Shaytan does. He tells people, “Follow me and I will show you the best way in this world.” People have followed him.

Messengers have said, “Follow us and we will show you the best way in this world and in the Hereafter.” Some have followed. Shaytan comes to all of us and whispers how to get what we like.

“What would you like to have, O my friend? What pleasure would you like to immerse yourself in? We can find a way for you to get it.”

Shaytan whispers to you how to fulfill your desires, you should know that. Rasoolullah (s) said, An-naar huffat bi ’sh-shahawaat. If you follow desires, you will fall into fire. Fire was surrounded by desires. Jannah is surrounded by things you don’t like and Jahannam is surrounded by things you love and desire.

O insaan, human being! Look around you: how are Ahlu’ l-khayri wa ’d-Deen, the People of Goodness, whose goodness is remembered throughout time. Until now, the names of those who followed Rasoolullah (s) are mentioned as good ones. The kings, presidents, prime ministers, ministers, rulers, people in power, the tyrants, do you still remember them? Who was the second king in Spain in the Medieval Times? Who was the third king of the Germans in the Medieval Times? Who was the fifth king of the Persions in the Medieval Times? Who was the second king, caliph, of the Muslims?

So many people know Sayyidina `Umar (r). Those who are good are remembered throughout the centuries. Those who are bad disappeared: even after hundreds of years if you open their graves there’s nothing.

Ahlu ‘l-khayr, the People of Goodness , their names last, their names remain, their way of conduct remains, how they were remains in the minds of people, in the books that people read and in the hearts of people. Ask anybody about a good one--they’re always remembered. Leave Hadhrat `Umar (r). They talk about Mother Teresa. Who is Mother Teresa? She was a good one. How about the other mothers, the other nuns, the other priests and the other popes? Do you know the fifteenth pope? Do you know the first pope or the tenth pope? No, but Mother Teresa is known. Why? Because she was a good one.

If you are from Ahlu ‘al-Khayr, you will be remembered. If you are from the tyrants, one, two, three hundred years later, gone. You have to follow Ahlu ‘al-Khayr so you can be remembered as being good. In all of us, whether tyrant or saint, there is a Shaytan whispering to us to do bad and an angel inspiring us to do good.

Shaytan makes waswas, he whispers evil. Angels give ilham, inspiration to goodness. Further, Shaytan continues to decorate badness so you see it as good.

Afaman zuyyina lahu su’oo `amalihi fara’ahu hasana.

Is he, then, to whom the evil of his conduct is made alluring, so that he looks upon it as good, (equal to one who is rightly guided)? For Allah leaves to stray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. So let not your soul go out in (vainly) sighing after them for Allah knows well what all they do! (Surah Fatir, 35:8)

There are so many people whose bad acts are decorated as good acts. That is Shaytan, yu zayin. He is decorating.

“Oh, it’s really nice. It’s the best thing we can do.”

“But it might harm others, it might ruin other people’s lives. It might ruin my family and my own life.”

“No, no, no, it’s good. Let’s do it.”

Shaytan whispers in your ear what you like to do. O insaan, pay attention! But angels inspire you to what is good and then you decide. Who do you listen to, Shaytan, or the Voice of Rahman through that holy angel? You decide. The one that you decide for wins. You can be from ahlu ‘l-khayr like Hadrat `Umar (r). People remember him as the second caliph, the second sultan of Muslims, Amiru ‘l-Mu’mineen. The second pope, the second Persian sassanid or whatever they call them, or the second, third, or fourth Pharoah, nobody remembers them. Follow Hadhrat `Umar (r).

I will mention a small thing that I heard from our master, so you can at least follow this in the conduct of Hadrat `Umar (r). What was the characteristic of Sayyidina `Umar (r)? Shaytan is scared of him. Have you heard that? Did you know that he has scared Shaytan? Do you scare Shaytan away from you or is Shaytan your best friend? Do you have the power to make Shaytan run away from you? No, you Don’t. How did Hadrat `Umar (r) scare Shaytan? He makes him frightened. That is Rasoolullah’s (s) testimony about Sayyidina `Umar (r).

He said, “Yaa Ibn al-Khattab!” I will say the meaning of the Hadith. If you take a way, Shaytan will take the other way. Whatever way you take, whatever road you’re on, Shaytan does not come and confront you. He takes another road. Why? Because Shaytan is scared of Hadrat `Umar (r). How did he scare Shaytan?

Sayyidina `Umar (r) is a human being like us, meat and bones, blood and flesh. He was not created an angel. How did he get to that? He had the backing of who? Everybody wants support. “He has my back. I have the backing of such and such a person. I am a strong one.” Who did Hadrat `Umar (r) have the backing of? Hadrat `Umar (r) was Waliyullah. There was no nabi after Rasoolullah (s), so he was Waliyullah. Waliyullah has the backing of Allah (swt). The tyrants of the backing of Shaytan. The evildoers have the backing of Shaytan. Who is stronger, Shaytan or Allah (swt)? Shaytan supports his people by whispering and telling them what to do “good work” just like the poison you give to rats is sugar coated. There is sugar on the top but poison in the middle. Shaytan shows his people the same thing, “I am with you. Don’t be afraid.” Allah (swt) backed Hadrat `Umar (r). Allah (swt) was behind him.

When Shaytan comes to you in the beginning, what do you do? Run away from Shaytan to Allah (swt). He is like a dog. If you fight a dog off, he will rip your jacket and tear your clothes. He might give you a bite or two. What do you do? Call the shepherd. “Take your dog away!” The shepherd comes and with one word, the dog goes back.

Why has Allah (swt) released Shaytan on human beings? So that human beings can run away from Shaytan to their Lord by seeking power from the Lord of Shaytan. Shaytan is still a creation, khalq, but He made that creation an enemy to human beings. When human beings are confronted by the whispering of Shaytan, they run to Allah (swt) , “Yaa Rabbee! Support me. I am falling.” Do you say, “A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem” when you are falling down? Very seldom.

“Yaa Rabbee! I’m falling. I’m standing between Your Arms. Help me.” When Allah (swt) sends His help, how does it appear in you? What’s the sign that Allah (swt) has made you His wali? What is the sign that Allah (swt) is backing you? You know that when your ego has calmed down its desires and ghadab, anger. You know that when your heart has become free from dunya and you know that when your inner secret has become full of Noor of Allah (swt), Nooru ‘t-Tawheed. You become noorani as Awliyaullah have said.

When you run to Allah (swt), you are facing Him in prayer and He is facing you. When the moon faces the sun, what happens to the moon? It takes light. The moon has no light of its own. That’s why it becomes all black, no light. But when it faces the sun, it receives light. When you face Allah (swt), His Noor will reach you. You will be enlightened. You will be noorani. The more you face Him, the more you are in front of Him, the more Noor comes to you.

Shaytan is dhulmani, a dark creature. He runs away from Noor. He runs away from light. When you become noorani like Hadhrat `Umar (r) who has taken the way of Tazkiyatu ‘n-Nafs, he has purified his heart from greed, anger, rage, his ego and he has let himself go from dunya. He left dunya. He took what he needed and left the rest. Allah (swt) filled him with Noor. He became noorani. That’s why Shaytan leaves him.

Have you become noorani yet? If you have not received the Noor of Allah (swt) in your heart, if you have not received that Noor into your being as Allah (swt) describes Himself: Allahu nooru ‘s-samawati wa ‘l-ardh. “I am the Noor of everything.” If you have not received Allah (swt)’s Noor inside of you, Shaytan will always be your best friend. When he is your best friend, he teaches you “good ways.”

May Allah (swt) forgive us. May Allah (swt) allow us to know which thought is a good thought and which thought is a bad thought. May Allah (swt) guide us to the right path because it’s difficult. Nowadays everybody is just falling right and left. Allah (swt) says that in the Holy Qur’an.

Affaman yamshi mukiban `alaa wajhihi ahdaa amman yamshi saweean `alaa siratin mustaqeem.

Is then one who walks headlong, with his face groveling, better guided, or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way. (Surah Al-Mulk, 67:22)

The ones that are walking and falling down. Every moment they’re falling down on their faces.

“Are they more guided than the ones that are walking on the straight path?”

Try to walk a straight path, O insaan. Try to follow ahlu ‘l-khayr. Try to follow the people of goodness so you will be remembered with goodness. Every time that dog comes next to you, that Shaytan, call his Lord. Say, “A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Yaa Rabbee! Help me against this one,” and Allah (swt)’s Support will come to you, O human being. But nobody is realizing that fact. Everybody is running after their desires. If you run after desires, you’re going to fall into that pit of fire. The whole world is in that pit of fire, Muslim and non-Muslim, Arab, `ajam. Everybody is in that pit of fire because they have not understood that Shaytan is showing their acts as good acts, while in reality their acts are the worst.

When was killing another person a good act? When was burning another person a good act? Did Allah (swt) created human beings to burn each other? Did Allah (swt) create human beings to kill each other? When was that a good act? When was lying a good act? When was cheating a good act? Leave religion, not even common sense accepts that. The clear mind doesn’t accept that. They have lost it.

Shaytan shows their acts as good, “Yes, kill more people. It’s a good thing to do.” Muslims, non-Muslims, Arabs, non-Arabs, Europeans, non-Europeans--everybody is in that pit of fire, going together with Shaytan. They are best friends. Shaytan is going to take you to the Fire. He is created of fire and he will end up in fire and you will be with him in fire.

Turn back to Allah (swt), O human being. Follow the people who are good. Christians, follow Mother Teresa and leave the others. Follow her. See what she has done. Muslims, follow Hadhrat `Umar (r), follow Hadhrat Siddiq (r), Follow Sahaaba al-kiram (r). See what they have done, learn from them and do what they have done.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. I will finish here. It is said that one Waliyullah was worshiping. Shaytan comes to the worshiper. Shaytan comes to the one who prays or fasts or whatever, to take him astray, to take him away from the right way. He came to that worshiper with desires first, throwing in his heart and mind all sorts of desires--beautiful, delightful, pleasurable desires. The `abid always asks support from Allah (swt). He could not get him through desires.

He came through ghadab. How many times does Shaytan come to every human being through rage and anger? He made him angry. He wanted him to be angry so many times but it also did not work. Then he came to him with khawf, worry. “What’s going to happen tomorrow? What’s going to happen after tomorrow? Worry about the future. Concern yourself with the future.” The worshiper knew that Allah (swt) knows the future. He trusted his Lord, so he was not afraid of the future. He was not afraid of the future, he was not getting angry and he was not getting into Shaytan's trap of desires.

Awliyaullah have narrated this story. At the end, Shaytan came to that Waliyullah and said, “I don’t want to take you astray anymore. I want to be your friend. I am your friend. I will never tell you something bad anymore.” That Waliyullah said, “I don’t need your friendship.” He said, “Okay. I’ll leave you but I want to leave you with an answer to any question you have.”

He asked, “How do you deceive people?” How does Shaytan deceive people? He said, “I deceive them with three main things. The first is shuh, the love of money with immense desire to have more, coupled with stinginess. Love of money and stinginess. I prevent them from giving zakaat and sadaqah of that money.” How many people hoard their money and never give zakaat?

“I show them that their money is so little that if you give, you’ll lose. I grab them first with shuh, love of wealth, love of money, a desire to have more, coupled with stinginess. Second, I come to them with anger.” When somebody is angry, we shaytans just throw him around as we throw the ball around. When somebody is angry, you cannot be in front of them.

Third, drunkenness. Booze. When somebody drinks, he forgets everything. When he forgets everything, he has no inhibitions. We can take him anywhere we want. O human beings, leave the booze and the weed and the drugs, everything that messes up the head. Second, leave the anger. Third, leave the love of this dunya. When you do that, you will find the way of Hadhrat `Umar (r). You will find the way of Hadrat as-Siddiq (r). You will find the way of Sahaaba al-kiram that have followed Rasoolullah (s).

Understand your enemy. Your enemies are four. Human beings are not considered the fifth enemy of a human being, as our master has described. Your first enemy is dunya, this world, the life of this world, the pleasures of this world. Your second enemy is your own ego that commands evil, amara bi ‘s-su. It tells you to do evil work. Your third enemy is hawa, lust and desires. Your fourth enemy is Shaytan. These are your enemies, O human beings. There is no fifth enemy. A human being is not the enemy of a human being. That’s what our masters have said.

What is the weapon of dunya? Liqaau ‘l-khalq. The weapon of dunya is when you mingle with people. How do you lock dunya up from your heart? `Uzla, seclusion. The power of dunya is when you mingle with others. It lures you to what they have. It lures you to what they are. It lures you to be desiring their position, to be desiring their money, to be desiring their mansions, to be desiring their wealth.

When you seclude yourself, you have locked up the dunya. You have chained it up from you. That’s what you need to do. Don’t mingle with people too many times. Don’t mingle with people unless you need to. Liqaau ‘l-khalq. You think about it. When you are with people, you dive into dunya. That is one.

Shaytan’s weapon is satiety, when you’re full. When you’re full, you have the power to do everything. What is his prison or lock up? When you’re hungry. For Shaytan, use hunger. That is how you get him. For dunya, you use `uzla, seclusion. That’s how you get it. For hawaa, you use silaahu al-kalam. Hawaa, your desire, loves to talk. The weapon of desire is speech. How do you lock your desires up? You be quiet. Don’t tell anybody anything you like. There is no more hawa. If you don’t speak, you cannot achieve what you like. Dunya, nafs, hawaa, and Shaytan.

The nafs, ego’s weapon is sleep. When you allow it to sleep, it gets the power. How do you lock up your ego? As-sahar as Awliyaullah have said, wake up at night for three, four, five hours after midnight. When your ego is tired, it doesn’t want to do anything. It wants to sleep during the day.

Know your enemies, O human being! Follow the path of Rasoolullah (s). This is all from his knowledge that he has given to those who have followed him corrected. The ones who have not followed him correctly are following Shaytan correctly. People are becoming like shayateen now. All of them are Shaytan. Stay away from them. Get to know the good ones. The good ones are the ones doing good that your mind says, “Yes, this is good work.” If your mind says, “No, this is not good work,” then leave that one. Don’t go to religion even. If somebody is doing something that is the opposite of societal norms as they say, leave that one alone. Go to the good ones.

May Allah (swt) make us with them and from them, inshaa-Allah .
