Love of Prophet Muhammad (s)

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

12 October 2012 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Suhbah at Bukit Damansara Community Hall

(Before Cultural Program)

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

I feel very honored to be here with you tonight and I thank everyone who organized, sponsored or did anything to make this evening colorful, just like a rainbow! I never expected to see this in Malaysia, because it is the first time (for our association) to be held in such a hall. Usually I give lectures in universities here, or in Penang, but not all the time. In the United States or in England, we have a lot of these assemblies or associations with different groups of people from various backgrounds.

Alhamdulillah, I am very honored to be here tonight, with my Muslim brothers, and our brothers who came from everywhere to celebrate the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! As much as we may speak, if we do not begin our lecture with “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem,” it means our lecture is not going to be successful. That is why we say, “A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani ‘r-rajim. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.”

Alhamdulillahi ‘l-Lladhee sharrafana an nakoona min ummati ’l-habeeb al-Mustafa `alayhi afdalu ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaam, w ’alhamdulillahi ’lladhee ja`alanaa min atba`i ’l-habeeb al-Mustafa sallAllahu `alayhi was-sallam, khayru ’l-bariyyati wa khayru ’l-bashar. As-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alayka yaa Sayyidi, yaa Rasoolullah! Yaa Rahmatan li ’l-`Alameen! As-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alayka yaa Shafi`ee al-Mudhnibeen!

O Muslim brothers and sisters! The Prophet (s) has mentioned in his hadith:

حب الاوطان من الايمان

Hubb al-awtaan min al-imaan.

Love of your countries is from faith.

The love of the country that you are born in is from faith! It means that if you have faith you love your country and if you don't have faith, you don't love your country. The Prophet (s) encouraged people to love their countries. Alhamdulillah, this is a Muslim country. We love Malaysia and we love to come to this country every time!

We want to talk of the love of the Prophet (s), or what is known in the Bahasa language as “cinta.” There are many songs here about cinta. In the beginning, I didn't know what this word means and I thought they made a mistake by putting the ‘n’ in it, but if you take away the ‘n’ what will happen? It becomes “cita” which means “cheating!” So are we cheating or loving? Which one do you want: cinta or cita? Alhamdulillah, we all want cinta!

To express love for the Prophet (s) is not so easy. Love is made up of two letters, “Ha” and “Ba,” and when put together in Arabic they make the word “hubb” which means, “love.” So anyone who has love, will have hayyat and baqa from the letters Ha and Ba. Ha represents “life” and the letter Ba represents “baqa,” to live continuously in Akhirah. When we love the Prophet (s), Allah (swt) gives us hayyat and baqa, this life and the life of Akhirah.

Love is not something you can put in yourself, it has to come from Allah (swt). Allah sent His Love for Prophet (s) without waiting for us. He showed in Holy Qur’an how much He loves His Servant, Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! He made all the angels to praise and send salawaat on the Prophet (s) and that is why it is necessary to praise the Prophet (s) day and night, by sending salawaat on him as the angels are doing. From the day Allah (swt) ordered them, until Allah (swt) knows when, the angels are making salawaat on the Prophet (s) without stopping, which we know because He said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

Inna-Llaaha wa malaa'ikatahu yusalloona `ala 'n-nabiyy, yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena aamanoo salloo `alayhi wa sallimoo tasleema.

Verily, Allah and His angels send praise on the Prophet. O Believers! Pray upon him and greet him.

(Surat al-'Ahzaab, 33:56)

“Yusalloon” is the future tense, meaning “continuously.” They are praising and sending salawaat on the Prophet (s) without stopping. Our situation is that we have to follow the way Allah (swt) has shown us. If Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur`an, “Me and My angels are sending salawaat on the Prophet (s), then, O Mu’mins and Muslims, do the same! Do not feel ashamed, as its an order for the angels and you!”

What will happen when we praise the Prophet (s)? The Prophet (s) said:

من صلى علي مرة صلى الله عليه بها عشرا

Man salla `alayya marrah, salla ’Laahu `alayhi bihaa `ashara.

Whoever prays on me one time, Allah prays on him ten times. (Sahih)

If this whole majlis makes one salawaat on the Prophet (s), Allah (swt) will immediately send ten salawaat on us! So let us say, Allahumma salli `alaa sayyidinaa Muhammadini 'l-faatihi limaa ughliq, wa 'l-khaatimi limaa sabaq, naasiri 'l-haqqi bi 'l-haqq, wa 'l-haadi ilaa siraatika 'l-mustaqeem, wa `alaa aalihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdaarihi 'l-`azheem.

This is one salawaat given by one of the awliyaullah, Muhammad al-Talmaysani (q), as recorded in the book, Talkhees al-ma`arif li Sayyid Muhammad Arif, which is a famous compilation of salawaat. He said, “I began life by practicing Islam and besides the obligations of salaat, sawm, Hajj and zakaat, in addition I recited Dalaa`il al-Khayraat and when I finished 100,000 recitations, that night I saw the Prophet (s) in a dream. He said, “Yaa Muhammad al-Talmaysani! I will teach you a salawaat that if you read it one time, it will be as if you recited Dalaa`il al-Khayraat 600,000 times!”

According to a hadith, whoever saw the Prophet (s) in a dream saw him correctly as Shaytan cannot appear in the Prophet’s (s) image. According to what the Prophet (s) said, if you read the salawaat that I read just now even once, it is as if you read Dalaa`il al-Khayraat 800,000 times. So what do we understand here? It means if we all make one salawaat out of love to the Prophet (s), and even the singers reciting their qasidas are doing it out of love for the Prophet (s), then for any salawaat Allah (swt) will send back ten salawaat!

The question here is, is our salawaat like the salawaat Allah (swt) makes on us ten times? No, they are not equal in any way. When Allah (swt) says He will make ten salawaat on us, His reward cannot be understood and no one can evaluate it! If Allah sends the reward of every one salawaat for which He gives ten, it would be enough to send all humanity and the Muslim ummah to Paradise!

O Mu`mins and Muslims! Allah (swt) gave us ways to raise our levels and He raised Sayyidina Muhammad (s) to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa! If we make salawaat on the Prophet (s), Allah (swt) will reward us and we don’t know with what; perhaps He will reward us to be with the Prophet (s) on the Day of Judgment, so be happy and make salawaat on the Prophet (s)! This whole universe is praising Allah (swt) and reciting tasbeeh.

Wa in min shay'in illa yusabihu bihamdih.

And there is not a thing but celebrates His praise! (Surat al-'Israa, 17:44)

This entire universe is making tasbeeh! We cannot see, but one galaxy contain 80 billion stars and scientists say they have found six thousand other galaxies bigger than our galaxy! All of them are making tasbeeh, as Allah (swt) said everything in the universe and in heavens is making tasbeeh. We cannot hear that tasbeeh, but the Prophet (s) could hear the tasbeeh of stones and when he was passing by mountains, he heard their recitation also! When the Prophet (s) held stones in his hand, Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) and Sayyidina `Umar (r) heard the tasbeeh of those stones. Imagine! Allah (swt) gave the Prophet (s) the ability to hear the tasbeeh of angels and everything, to show His Love to Sayyidina Muhammad (s)!

So where is our love compared to the love of Allah (swt)? Where is the love of Anbiyaa (a) compared to the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)? Allah (swt) loved the Prophet (s) more than anyone else! That is why Imam Busayri (r) said, “He (s) is the only lover from whom Allah will accept whatever he asks. He will make shafa`ah for the ummah to enter Paradise without account!”

Look at the love of Prophet (s) towards us and look at the love of Allah (swt) towards the Prophet (s)!

As related from Ibn Abbas (r), the Prophet (s) was sittiing with his Sahaabah (r):

He asked them, “Who has most imaan possible in this life? and they said, “The angels.” He (s) said, “How are angels not going to have imaan when they are in Paradise and they are ordered to make salawaat on the Prophet (s)?” And then they said, “Anbiyaaullah,” and the Prophet (s) said, “How can Anbiyaa not have strong imaan when they are seeing what they see?” And they said, “Then it is us!” and the Prophet (s) said, “How? You are seeing me every day.” Then they said, “Who, yaa Rasoolullah?” and the Prophet (s) looked at them with `ishq, showing love to those who have strongest imaan, as he loves them! He said, “Those who have the strongest imaan are those coming after me who believed in me without seeing me.You are my Companions and they are my Lovers.”

They are you, who came after the Prophet (s) without seeing him! That is due to our yearning to see the Prophet (s) in dunya and Akhirah, from expressing our love to the Prophet (s), “Yaa Rasoolullah! We love you and want to you to look at us! We are requesting and begging Allah (swt) to open for us to see you!”

O mu’mins, Believers! The happiest moment in your life is to see the Prophet (s), and he is not far, which we know because he (s) said:

حياتي خير لكم تحدثون ويحدث لكم ، فإذا أنا مت كانت وفاتي خيرا لكم ، تعرض علي أعمالكم فان رأيت خيرا حمدت الله تعالى وإن رأيت شرا استغفرت لكم

Hayaatee khayrun lakum tuhadithoona wa yuhdatha lakum fa idhaa anaa mitt kahan wafaatee khayran lakum. Tu`radu `alayya `amal ummatee, wa in wajadtu khayran hamadt 'allah wa in wajadtu ghayrah astaghfarta lahum.

I observe the `amal of my ummah. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see other than that, bad, I ask forgiveness for them. (al-Bazzaar in his Musnad)

This entire universe is in love and every movement in life is for love! You go to work for the love of work and go to business for the love of business; similarly, you go to Mecca for love of Mecca and go to Madinah for love of Madinah. Everything in this life is based on movement that expresses the love of human beings. That is why sayyidina Ja`far at-Tayyar (r ), who died as a shaheed at Khaybar, began to jump and dance out of love of Prophet (s) when the Prophet (s) told him, “You resemble me!” The Prophet (s) didn't stop him, but let him express his love for him completely and then he told him to sit. Everything in this universe is in movement and is praising Allah (swt) and the Prophet (s). The smallest possible thing in this universe is the atom of every element in the Periodic Table. Every atom has a mass, which is the neutron, and it has has electrons that circumambulate the mass within the atom, moving at a speed of 300,000 kmps inside the atom. Our system is like an atom in which every cell of our body is moving towards Allah (swt) and praising Him!

Wa in min shay'in illa yusabihu bihamdih, walakin laa tafqahoona tasbeehahum.

And there is not a thing but celebrates His Praise, and yet you understand not how they declare His glory! (Surat al-'Israa, 17:44)

Electrons are circumambulating around the mass, turning with the speed of light. What is light? Scientists and scholars agree:

O Prophet! Truly We have sent you as a witness. You are the one who calls people to Allah by His permission, and (you are) a shining lamp. (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:45-46)

Allah (swt) is saying, “You are a lamp, shining like the moon! We sent you as a lamp, bringing people from darkness into light.” That light is a symbol of the Prophet (s) that makes us see it is moving at a speed of 300,000 kps. The first thing Allah (swt) created is the Light of the Prophet (s).

`An Jaabir ibn `AbdAllah qaala: qultu yaa Rasoolullah, bi-abee anta wa ummee, akhbirnee `an awwala shayin khalaqahu ’Llaaha qabla’l-ashyaa? Qaala: yaa Jaabir, inn Allaha ta`ala khalaqa qabla al-ashyaa noora nabiyyika min noorih...

When Jaabir (r) asked, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, oh Prophet of Allah! What is the first thing that Allah (swt) created?” the Prophet (s) said, “The first thing that Allah (swt) created is the Light of your Prophet from His Light, O Jaabir.” (Musannaf `Abdu ’r-Razzaq)

That light is always in sajda in front of Allah (swt). The Prophet (s) is the one who is going to make sajda on the Day of Judgment in front of Allah (swt), asking Him to send his ummah to Paradise without taking any account.

O Muslims! The Prophet (s) will stand on your behalf, for the whole ummah. He will make sajda and Allah (swt) will open dua`s to his heart that He never opened before. Allah (swt) will tell him to raise his head so He can give him what he wants. The Prophet (s) will say, “ Give me my ummah!” He will not ask to be saved himself, on a Day about which Allah (swt) has said in the Holy Qur`an:

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

Yawma yafiru ’l-mar’oo wa min akheehi wa ummihi wa abeehi wa saahibatihi wa baneehi.

On the Day when people will run away from their brothers and sisters, from his mother and his father and then from wife and children. (Surat `Abasa, 80:34-36)

On the Day of Judgment everyone will run even from their own brother, sister, mother and father to save themselves, not even caring for their family! It won't be like it is in dunya. The only one who cares is Sayyidina Muhammad (s), who will say, “Yaa Rabbee! I am not going to enter Paradise without my ummah. I want them.” Allah (swt) will tell him to take one-third of them and go without account!

The Prophet (s) said in a hadith:

`An `Ayesha ® anna rasoolullaahi (s) qaala: man hoosiba `udhdhib. Qaalat `Ayeshatu: yaa Rasoolullaahi, fa ayna qawlahu: Fa-ammaa man ootiya kitaabahu bi-yameenihi fa-sawfa yuhaasabu hisaaban yaseera. Qaala: dhaalikumu’l-`ardu, wa laakinnahu man nooqisha’l-hisaaba `udhdhib.”

“Truly whoever is accounted will never be able to pass, and will be punished.” … (Bukhari)

If Allah (swt) is going to judge anyone, even the perfect ones, not the Anbiyaa (a) but even a wali, He will get something the wali has done in his life which is not correct. Don't think awliyaullah don't make mistakes! They do, but they are protected. Anbiyaa are infallible, ma`soomeen, but awliyaullah might do something wrong. If Allah (swt) will judge, He will find a lot of sins we have done that we don't even remember, and Sayyidina Muhammad (s) doesn't want anyone to be judged, because anyone who is judged will be punished. Even if Rabi`a al-`Adawiyya (q) or Bayazid al-Bistami (q) are judged, they will be in problems!

Those are awliyaullah, then what about us; are we clean? No! So the Prophet (s) doesn't want his ummah to be judged and that is why he will go into sajda and make dua` for the ummah and then Allah (swt) will give him one-third of the ummah. This is a hadith in Sahih Bukhari. He will go in sajda again and will pray. Allah (swt) will open dua`s for him that He never opened before, and then He will say, “Irfa` raasak sa'l tu`taa, raise your head and ask, you will be given!” Allah (swt) will then give him another third of the ummah. The Prophet (s) will do the same the third time and Allah (swt) will give him everyone to take to Paradise!

O Muslims and Believers! Those who are with Prophet (s) are tough on kufr and show mercy to each other. We have to show mercy to each other! Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur`an:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

Allah (swt) did not ask us separate, He said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

Ya ayyuha an-naasu innaa khalaqnaakum min dhakkarin wa unthaa wa ja`alanaakum shu`uban wa qabaa’il li-ta`arafoo, Inna akramakum `ind-Allahi atqaakum. inna Allaha `aleemun khabeer.

O Mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the Sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Surat al-Hujurat, 49:13)

Let us be pious, but how? By remembering Allah (swt) and praising the Prophet (s) day and night, sending salawaat on the Prophet (s), and Allah will give us His Love!

I will relate a story coming from our shuyookh, who related it from their shuyookh. The neighbor of Sayyidina Musa (a) had no faith or love, so he asked him, “When you go to visit your Lord on Tur Sina, tell Allah to send me faith and love.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “I will ask.” When Sayyidina Musa (a) was on Sinai he asked for his ummah what he asked, then he was going down and Allah (swt) said, “O Musa! You didn't ask what your neighbor asked.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “Oh, I forgot!”

Allah (swt) said, “What is he asking?”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “He says he has no faith or love, so send him some love and faith.”

Allah (swt) said, “I am sending him the least amount possible of faith and love.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said to himself, “Is this a joke?” But he went back, pleased that Allah (swt) answered that neighbor. He came to his neighbor's house, knocked and entered, and found that neighbor with his eyes wide open but as if asleep, not awake (unconscious). He said, “O my neighbor, I came to you with some good news!” and tried to wake him up, but could not.

Allah (swt) said, “Yaa Musa! That one is gone with one drop of My love! He no longer sees dunya at all!”

That Love is enough to intoxicate! If we ask ourselves, “Are we drunk?” The answer is, “No, we are not!” So do we have faith or love? That is a question mark. Yes, we have love to Allah (swt) and the Prophet (s), and we are struggling in our love. Too much fitna is around us and there is too much dunya outside; too much technology around us in the form of iPads, computers, cameras and Facebook, all which are destroying the honor of people and the way they should live decently. Everyone is on computers, iPads or iPhones, both adults and children. Do you know what your children are watching? No, and you don't want to admit it, but they are watching what you are watching and then you complain, “My children are running here and there!” Look what you are giving them. Technology is not for Facebook, it is for education! Facebook is destroying you. You don't need it, close (delete) Facebook because you don’t need that fitna. That is what takes you to Hellfire!

May Allah (swt) protect us from Hellfire and grant us to keep love for Allah (swt) and the Prophet (s) in our hearts. Leave your matters in the hands of Allah (swt) as He is the Best One to resolve our matters. For your difficulties, problems, marital life, marriage, finance, medical situations, always seek Him, asking for His Support for the sake of the Prophet (s)!

Allah (swt) said in an ayah of the Holy Qur`an:

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ جَآؤُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُواْ اللّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُواْ اللّهَ تَوَّابًا رَّحِيمًا

Wa law annahum idh zhalamoo anfusahum ja’ooka f ’astaghfaroollaaha w ’astaghfara lahumu ‘r-rasoolu la-wajadoo ’Llaaha tawwaaba ‘r-raheema.

If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come to you and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:64)

May Allah (swt) bless us and forgive us, and we ask Allah (swt) that the Prophet (s) will intercede for us in this life and in the Next Life.

Anyone wants to renew baya` to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), raise his hand.

(Du`a of baya`.)

Inna ’Lladheena yuba`oonaka innamaa yuba`oon-Allaah, yadullaahi fawqa aydeehim, faman nakatha fa-innamaa yankuthu `alaa nafsih wa man awfaa bimaa `ahad `alayhullaha fa-sayu'teehi ajran `azheema.

Lo! Those who swear allegiance to you (Muhammad), swear allegiance only to Allah! The Hand of Allah is above their hands, so whoever breaks his oath breaks it only to his soul's hurt, while whoever keeps his covenant with Allah, on him will He bestow immense reward. (Surat al-Fath, 48:10)

When the Sahaabah (r) came to the Prophet (s) and took baya` under the tree, that ayah came for that event, and those who are giving baya` to the Prophet (s) are giving baya` to Allah (swt). We are making baya` that we will try to be the best of Muslims and mu`mins inshaa-Allah, with our children and our families!

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
