Leave the Servants to Their Lord

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

Zhuhr Suhbah

[On video, Shaykh Hisham’s suhbah begins at 28:00.]

Everyone has a way, and the number of ways to Allah (swt) are infinite, as it is said:

الطرق الى الله على عدد أنفاس الخلائق

The paths to Allah are as many as the breaths of Creation.

“The ways to Allah (swt) are on the number of breaths of human beings.” Breath never ends or this whole system would collapse, not only human beings’ physical systems, but also animals and plants would collapse. That's why Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur'an:

وَلِكُلٍّ وِجْهَةٌ هُوَ مُوَلِّيهَا فَاسْتَبِقُواْ الْخَيْرَاتِ

For everyone there is a direction to their goal; then strive together (as in a race) towards all that is good. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:148)

"For everyone there is a direction, a way. Try to compete with who is better than the other." Allah created us and knows what we will do, and He is telling us for every one of us there is a direction, a way to safety. Those who seek safety will find it in that ayah. Awliyaullah do not speak outside: for them, the secret of that ayah will open and they speak from it, not like us reading and writing, no! They proceed according to that window, and there is a window and a door for everyone that they come through to reach safety in their direction, and everyone has a specific direction. That’s why in the direction of Islam, in spirituality, Tasawwuf, Prophet (s) has shown his Sahaabah and humanity all kinds of directions in their lives and future. There are so many directions and everyone has their own, whether they are in a group or on their own.

Laa tuayyibi `ala ahat, “Don’t bring people’s faults,” let them conceal their faults and try to see them and benefit from following the right way that suits them. Here everyone is wearing different styles and colors of dress, and according to the ayah, everyone has different decorations.

وَلِكُلٍّ وِجْهَةٌ هُوَ مُوَلِّيهَا فَاسْتَبِقُواْ الْخَيْرَاتِ

For everyone there is a direction to their goal; then strive together (as in a race) towards all that is good. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:148)

The Wali looks from the decoration he is in, that’s why Awliyaullah try not to make mistakes and they are so protected from falling into mistakes. We have to understand that everyone has a way. I asked Mawlana Shaykh Nazim about this ayah when I was 22 years old, before I married his daughter, and he said the best one to explain it is Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani, “Go ask him the meaning of Wa li kulli wijhatun huwa muwalleehaa fa 'stabiqoo 'l-khayraat!”

I went and there I got beaten by Grandshaykh (q), who said, “Why are you coming here?”

I replied, “Sayyidi, Shaykh Nazim told me to ask you about the tafseer of this ayah.”

Grandshaykh (q) said, “Go to the market: there’s a mufti there, it’s his job to answer questions! My job is not to look at people, not even to look at which direction they’re following,” because you don’t know when that person will come to imaan. I’m speaking about Muslim people, the others are judged by Allah, not us, we cannot judge anyone. “Allah made a direction for everyone, some West, some East, and when the West meets the East everything is solved.” So do we have to follow what they say or what we say? It’s better to follow what they say.

Prophet (s) never said, “No.” He was either quiet and didn’t answer, or he answered in a positive way. So if some people want to take over others’ work, let them remember that for everyone there’s a direction. For example, many people come and say, “This person has taken my job!” Don’t worry, because if it was not written they could never take it, so don’t bother yourself with umoor ad-dunya, we are here to work for Akhirah, not dunya which is fading. There are so many [realities]. Go to a famous library, say, the Library of Congress, and look at the books; what do you take? Everyone looks at those books to find a reality that suits them: in History, Geography, Islam, Christianity, everyone is trying to find a reality in those books.

What did Sayyidina `Ali (r) say? He came to the Sahaabah (r), who were sitting together on the floor, and he said, “Everything we say is based on one issue: if we are able to control that, then everything becomes peaceful.”

The Sahaabah (r) said, “Yaa `Ali, Prophet said you are door to the City of Knowledge.”

What is the City of Knowledge? In the city there are so many directions, ways, but fastabiqoo ‘l-khayraat, “compete together to reach reality”. So even `Ali is telling the Sahaabah (r), “Run to reality, run to the City of Knowledge” that Prophet (s) mentioned.

أنا مدينة العلم و علي بابها

I am the City of Knowledge and `Ali is its Door (or Gate). (al-Haakim, Tirmidhi)

So as Mawlana said, in every person there are at least 12,000 different ways in their mind, and every moment it is turning around to find reality, the answer. When the brain is satisfied with the answer, that reality appears in public, but as long as that reality is not clear to him, then he is still in the level of not competing, because he will not find it until he becomes an `alim Muslim.

Mawlana Shaykh (q) said, “A Muslim scholar is better than 70,000 normal scholars,” but that knowledge is hidden in the brain and he has to pull it out. Some scientists were able to pull it out, while others did not but are working on it. So our duty and responsibility is to find and know which direction we must go. Our reality is the direction of the Tariqah Naqshbandiyya, nothing else. Awliyaullah are waiting for you to come to them: they come to you, but you’re not taking them inside.

Grandshaykh (q) said, “There is a mufti, here there is no mufti, there is Reality. If you want to ask them about ‘Alif,’ ‘Baa,’ ‘Taa,’ then go to the mufti.” At that time the mufti of Syria was Shaykh Ahmad Koftaro, a big `alim and Sufi. Some of his students live near here, they’re mostly doctors.

So Sahaabah wanted to know, “What is that, yaa `Ali, ‘Prophet is the City of Knowledge and the door is Sayyidina `Ali’?” Prophet (s) gave us a shortcut: `Ali (r) is the door to the City of Knowledge, and who is the city? Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r)! It is adab of Ashaab an-Nabi (r): the first khalifah is Sayyidina Abu Bakr, and were he not fit he would not have become khalifah; then in succession, Sayyidina `Umar, Sayyidina `Uthman, and Sayyidina `Ali. All of them reached Maqaam al-Khilafah which is the line when you follow Sahaab an-Nabi, then you are in the line of khilafah, and there are so many, khilaafaat of dunya and Akhirah. Allah will make you khalifah in dunya and in Akhirah, it’s up to Him, we are nothing.

So Sayyidina `Ali spoke to the Sahaabah, Al-qur’an wa’l hadith yirtaqiz `ala nuqta wahida “Qur’an and Hadith depend on one point that, if you find it, you find everything.” May Allah make us find that point. We’ll speak about it, inshaa-Allah. Wa min allahi-tawfeeq. Huwa min muhabba.

For sure, everyone here has a direct line to Prophet (s), yaa Sayyidi, yaa Rasoolullah azhir karama azhir ajdana ...mumkin yamhee ila hadrah! We are deep in dunya, we’re sitting like beggars at the doors of Awliya asking them to open them! In spirituality, beggars, faqeers, have a high level, although in dunya it’s a low level. We are looking and waiting for them to show us compassion, and if they don’t send their aatif we would never sit like that. We must know that sitting under their name is a level above many, many levels in Tariqah. Good tidings to you (a mureed) that Allah drew you to His Habeeb (s), to the presence of Prophet (s), and the maqaam of Sayyidina Muhyideen Ibn `Arabi (q), who is buried in Sham. Poor people sit there daily and they are fed lentil soup. Their wazifa is making salawaat on Prophet (s), nothing else.

Who does this now? Who leaves their dunya life and sits in front of a holy grave on a towel, waiting for people to give them food or money? They don’t look at the money, some of them are blind, they put it in their pocket, and they eat the food, for 24 hours they do that. We are beggars at the door of Awliya, we are in that situation. Shake them, shake Awliyaullah! Yaa Sayyiddee wa `atoonaa bil Mahdi `alayhi ‘s-salaam fa aynahoo alfi khamsan hijriyya! They promise and they keep promising, they are there, they are watching us, watching everyone! Everyone has a Wali on top of his head guiding him 24 hours a day. If that guidance disappeared, people would run loose everywhere without thinking. May Allah keep our minds intact.

Khassatan Sayyidina Shaykh `AbdaAllah Daghestani wa Sayyidee Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani madadunaa ila silsilah ...wajtama`aat Sayyidina Abu Bakr Sayyidina Jafaar as-Saadiq, they meet from two sides, Imam Jafar as-Saadiq and Sayyidina al-Qasim, grandson of Sayyidina Abu Bakr, the two wings. Try to jump in, which isn’t possible in every moment; it comes one moment in a period of time and if you catch it, you win it. If you miss it try the second one, the third one, until you catch it.

There is someone sitting here, behind me. Awliyaullah can move freely. Is Prophet (s) here? Of course!

If they had only, when they were unjust (oppressor) to themselves, come to you and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-Returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisaa, 4:64)

(O Muhammad! They come to you when they make mistakes.” We are making mistakes every moment of our day, which means Prophet (s) is present, waiting for us to say, “Astaghfirullah.” Let’s read Salawaat al-Faatih.

Salaat al-Faatih, Salutation of the Victor

اللهم صل على سيدنا محمد الفاتح لما أغلق و الخاتم لما سبق ناصر الحق بالحق و الهادي إلى صراطك المستقيم و على آله حق قدره و مقداره العظيم

Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammadin ‘il-faatihi limaa ughliqa wa 'l-khaatimi limaa sabaqa wa 'n-naasiri 'l-haqqi bi 'l-haqqi wa 'l-haadi ilaa siraatika 'l-mustaqeema wa `alaa aalihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdaarihi 'l-`azheem.

O Allah! Bless our Master Muhammad (s), who opened what was closed and who is the Seal of what went before, he who makes the Truth victorious by the Truth, the guide to Your Straight Path, and bless his Household as is due his immense position and grandeur.

There was a man who prayed behind Prophet (s) and returned home. Prophet (s) said to the Sahaabah, “That person is going to enter Paradise with no account.” Us, we will enter with too many accounts.

So Sayyidina `Umar (r) observed him and wondered, “What is difference between me and him?” That teaches us how much Islam is to be respected. “I will follow him to his house to see what he does.”

After `Asr he followed that person to his house, and once he had entered and settled down, Sayyidina `Umar (r) knocked at the door.

“You were following me? Why?”

“I want to see the reality of the Hadith.”

“Okay, stay with me.”

He hosted Sayyidina `Umar (r) for three days without asking any questions; Sayyidina `Umar (r) observed him to see what he was doing extra, but he saw he was a normal in every way, so what distinction guaranteed him Paradise with no account?

Sayyidina `Umar said,“You speak like us, you eat like us, you pray like us, so what is the difference?”

He said, “Yaa `Umar, every night I like to sleep on Shahaadah so if I die in my sleep I will die on that; second, I host guests without asking any questions or any backbiting; third, I have no enmity toward any person. I forgive from Fajr to Ishraaq everyone that harmed me, and I pray for those who did not harm me; fourth, if all the treasures of dunya would come to me in the morning and leave in the evening, I would not be happy nor sad, I just don’t care about that. This is what I have.”

For this the Prophet (s) said he will enter Paradise with no account. So if we compare him with ourselves, we find we are at zero: we backbite; we focus on dunya, “I want this and that”; we have enmity and .all kinds of bad manners

That man said, “I keep myself quiet, clean, and pure.”

Sayyidina `Umar (r) said, “That I don’t have,” and from then on he was striving to keep those conditions. Let us begin with Qiyaam al-Layl: if we are not sick, to be blessed with the blessings, also for Laylata ‘l-Qadr, for those who saw it and those who didn’t, with such a meeting that’s connected to Grandshaykh `AbdAllah Daghestani and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim and many Awliya, of which there are 124,000, all of whom we love and respect.

Wa min Allahi tawfeeq bi hurmatil Fatihah.
