A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.
Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.
Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.
Inshaa-Allah, we’ll start with three Surah Yaseen. That’s what we learned from our `ulama, from our shuyookh on this holy, blessed night. The first recitation will be with the intention of long life in the obedience of Allah (swt), in Islam, in iman, to hold onto faith in this difficult time.
May Allah (swt) keep us away from afflictions.
Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi Qutbu ‘l-Mutasarrif. Madad, yaa Sultan al-Awliya, madad. Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi wa Mawlay. Madad, yaa RijaalAllah.
Inshaa-Allah, we’ll say a few words about tonight that we have heard from our shuyookh, from Awliyaullah, our masters. May Allah (swt) always keep us on their footsteps. Allah (swt) has said in the Holy Qur’an and, alhamdulillah, Imam Sahib alerted me to that.
This, because they who are bent on denying the truth pursue falsehood, whereas they who have attained to faith pursue [but] the truth [that flows] from their Sustainer. In this way does God set forth unto man the parables of their true state. (Surah Muhammad, 47:3)
Allah (swt) gives the example of people. He said: dhalika bi analadhina kafaroo it’taba’u ‘l-batil.
The ones who have rejected heavenly messages have followed falsehood. What they follow is false, what they think about is false, what they think is truth is false. Those have rejected heavenly messages and rejected Muhammad (s). This is in Surah Muhammad. Those who have not believed in what Rasoolullah (s) brought have followed falsehood. Those who have believed in that which has come down and it is the Truth, Allah (swt) has made their minds and hearts tranquil.
If you follow what God has sent to us, you will be tranquil and at peace in this world. Are you tranquil in this world? No, of course not. Who is tranquil in this world nowadays? Who is at peace in this world nowadays? Who can find a moment of silence, joy, relaxation and happiness nowadays? If you follow what has come down from Heavens, you will find that peace. Allah (swt) says, I will clean up and clear your mind. Wa yuslihu balahum. Allah (swt) will make their conscience settled.
Follow the Holy Qur’an. We have important nights to remind us of what we need to believe in. Some people believe this night is holy and others say, “No, it is not holy.” Some say the Hadith is sahih, others say it is da’eef and so forth. Allah (swt) mentioned it in the Holy Qur’an. The Qur’an has come to settle your heart. It has come to put your heart at peace while you are in this world. How can you find peace? When you understand the wisdom of things. You say, “Oh yeah, okay. That makes sense. Let’s see where it goes.”
When you understand the wisdom of what’s happening, the wisdom of affairs, the wisdom of circumstances then you are at peace because you understand there is wisdom and you can see it. Allah (swt) said in Surah Dukhan, asta’eedhubillah:
فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيم
Feeha yufraqoo koolu amrin hakeem.
On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil]. (Surat ad-Dukhan, 44:4)
On that night what Allah (swt) has destined from pre-Eternity will appear, will be authorized. What will be authorized? Every affair that is full of wisdom. He used “Hakeem.” “Amr” means “affair.” “Hakeem” means “full of wisdom.” That means if you understand the wisdom, you will be happy with whatever is happening on earth. You will have no objection if you understand the wisdom of things.
The Qur’an came to put your heart at ease. There is wisdom in what Allah (swt) is decreeing. Allah (swt) has destined what is going to happen this year before everybody was born, before the earth was created. Allah (swt) does not think, “What’s going to happen next year? Let Me think and write it.” Allah (swt) is not like us. Allah (swt) does not plan now what’s going to happen next year. It is pre-planned, Azali, Pre-Eternity.
In Pre-Eternity, Allah (swt) destined whatever is going to happen to all creation. Rasoolullah (s) confirmed that. He said, the ink has dried, it’s set in motion but every year Allah (swt) shows what is going to happen this year and He delivers it to the angels. They say, “Where did you get all that information?” It’s in the Ocean of the Holy Qur’an but those who claim they are alims don’t understand the Holy Qur’an. In the last juz of the Holy Qur’an, right after Surah Naba, there is Surah Nazi’at. Allah (swt) says:
Wa ‘nashitati nashta wa ‘sabihati sabha fa ‘s-sabiqati sabqa fa ‘l-muddabirati amra.
By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed), and by those who glide along (on errands of mercy), then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord). (Surat an-Naziat, 79:2-5)
There is a set of angels that fulfill Allah (swt)’s Commands. Allah (swt) has already decreed commands. These angels are given the commands to deliver them, to authorize them, to make them. These are the four angels. Awliyaullah have gone deep in the Ocean of the Holy Qur’an.
Awliyaullah have told us in their books that Sayyidina ibn Abbas, may Allah (swt) be pleased with him and his father, said that in this night Allah (swt) will show four things that He has destined to the four angels. The first is (audio cut) rizq, plants and rain. He orders where it’s going to rain, where it’s not going to rain, where it is going to flood, what plants are going to grow, what plants won’t grow, which trees will give good fruit and which trees will freeze. Allah (swt) has destined that. How big is His Knowledge? Can you keep track of all the oranges that will have frost in March in Florida? Nobody knows. This is Allah (swt)’s Vast Knowledge to Sayyidina Mika’eel (a), the rizq of humans, animals and everything else.
The second knowledge is given to Sayyidina Jibreel (a) which is wars, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, wind, lightening, sink holes. Have you ever seen sinkholes? They have a lot in China. Be careful. In Pakistan you might get some sinkholes because China does your concrete. You will fall in! Khasif, when the earth opens and swallows people. That is given to Sayyidina Jibreel (a).
The third knowledge is about death, who is going to die. Do you believe in Sayyidina Azra’eel (a), O mu’min? You do. Whoever is going to die this year is given to Sayyidina Azraeel (a), “These are the souls that you have to collect.” If the king doesn’t have soldiers to fulfill his commands, what kind of king is he?
On this night Allah (swt) authorizes whatever is going to happen this year to His archangels and they give it to the lower angels to fulfill. What do you do, O mu’min? Awliyaullah have said you need: sabr, yaqeen and tawakkul. Your duty, O Muslim, O mu’min, is to be patient, have faith and reliance on Allah (swt). If you are happy or if you are content with bala` that is coming down, Allah (swt) will be happy that you are following His Will.
Sayyidina Musa (a) asked Allah (swt), “Yaa Rabbee. When are You happy with me, O my Lord?” He wanted to make his Lord happy. As Awliyaullah have said, Allah (swt) said, “O Musa, when you are happy with Me, I am happy with you.” Are you happy with Allah (swt)? No. Our screaming and complaints reach the sky.
A mu’min has to believe that Allah (swt) has set wise decisions, has set wise orders. The archangels are at work delivering what He wants. Nobody does anything with their own minds without Allah (swt)’s Will. The mu’min has to believe that. That is why you have to have patience, strong iman and tawakkul, reliance on Allah (swt). Yaa Rabbee, I am accepting. Are you accepting? Yes. When you are happy with what Allah (swt) has given you, what does He promise you? Jannah. In Surat al-Bayyinah it says, wa radi’Allahu anhum wa radu’an. Allah (swt) will allow them to enter Paradise. He is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. When you are pleased with Allah (swt) for whatever has come upon you, Allah (swt) is pleased with you because you have accepted what He has destined for you. When you are pleased with that, you will be from ahlu ‘l-Jannah. O mu’min, try to be pleased with what Allah (swt) has destined for you.
Rather, we are ungrateful. That is why the people of Jannah are not as many as the people of Jahannam. The other side is full. Shaytan came to Rasoolullah (s) and said, “My followers will surpass your followers by many, many times. I will have all of mankind behind me except for a few that are with this Nabi, a few with this Nabi, some with you, some with him, but most of the people will be behind me.”
If you want to be from ahlu ‘l-Jannah, it is difficult. You have to have rida. Allah (swt) is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Dhalika man khashiya Rabba.
Their reward is with Allah. Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow; they will dwell therein for ever; Allah well pleased with them, and they with Him: all this for such as fear their Lord and Cherisher. (Surat al-Baiyyinah, 98:8)
That will be given to the one who is in awe of his Lord, venerates his Lord, exalts his Lord. “Yaa Rabbee. You know best. You are the Wise One. Who am I? Maybe I know something that You have taught me, but You know everything. Everything You do has khayr.” The mu’min has to be more than just a regular Muslim. You have to be deeper.
Ahlu 'l-Jannah are four kinds. The first group is Anbiya, prophets. The second group is Awliya, saints. The third group is `ulama, scholars. The fourth group is mu’mins, us. At least you are there. The mu’min who has patience, and faith and reliance on Allah (swt), if Allah (swt) makes him enter a fire, surrounding him with punishment, that person will only increase in love to his Lord, will only increase in getting closer to his Lord, even if Allah (swt) puts him in the middle of fire and surrounds him with punishment.
If Allah (swt) puts you in a fire, you have to increase in nothing but love for Allah (swt) and intimacy with Him and closeness to Him. He will ask, “Do you accept?” You have to say, “I accept.” Can you? What did Allah (swt) tell Sayyidina Ibrahim (a)? Asta’eedhu billah.
Idh qaala lahu Rabbuhu aslim. Qaala aslamtu li Rabbi ‘l-`Alameen.
Behold! his Lord said to him: "Bow (thy will to Me):" He said: "I bow (my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe." (Surah Baqarah, 2:131)
Allah (swt) told Sayyidina Ibrahim (a), aslim, surrender, submit to My Will. Qaala aslamtu li Rabbi ‘l-`Alameen. He said, “I have surrendered to Your Will, O Lord of everything.” What happened after that? They put him in a catapult and threw him into the fire. Did he scream or was he truthful to this word? Did he change? Even Jibreel (a) came to test him, “Do you need anything?” He said, “No, hasbi Allah (swt). Allah (swt) is enough for me.”
A mu’min has to follow Sayyidina Ibrahim (a). When you say, “I am submitting to you, O my Lord,” if Allah (swt) throws you into fire and makes punishment, torture, killing or whatever it is surround you, you have to increase in nothing but love and submission to Allah (swt). You will be on the footsteps of Sayyidina Ibrahim (a).
Whatever Allah (swt) has destined for this year, your job as a mu’min is sabr, patience, faith and reliance as Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) did. He was patient, he had strong iman and he had reliance. What happened in the end? He did not scream or tremble or shake. Allah (swt) honored him by becoming his Beloved and he made the fire peaceful on him. That is what is expected from a mu’min. Whatever events happen this year, be fully submitting and content with whatever comes from Allah (swt). How do you achieve that? Tawheed. Laa ilaaha illa-Llah. When you have Tawheed in your heart, nothing will shake your heart. That’s how you can reach Allah (swt)’s Love and Acceptance and you will become a Wali.
The secret of sainthood is Tawheed, when you submit fully to Allah (swt).Where are we from that? Very hard. When I said to Indra, “If He throws you in the fire, you have to be happy,” he was looking like, “How? How can I be happy when He is putting all of these difficulties upon me? He is sending all of this stuff to me. How can I be happy with Him?” Look at the example of Sayyidina Ibrahim (a). He said, “Yaa Rabbee. I submit. I am a Muslim.” That means submitting to His will. Let’s test you. If you say, “I am a mu’min,” Allah (swt) promises to test you.
Ahsiba ‘n-nasu ayyutraku an yaqoolu amana wa hum la yuftanoon.
Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? (Surat al-Ankabut, 29:2)
Did people think that they will be able to say, “We believe, we are Muslims,” and they will not be tested. You will be tested with fire, not with millions of dollars. “I want to be tested with zam zam.” Of course it’s nice to drink zam zam but sometimes you might have fire come upon you as Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) had fire come upon him. Awliyaullah, Anbiyaullah all had difficulties. Every year a new set of orders would come up. Expect a new set of orders to come up this year but you are asking for shelter from Allah (swt). “Yaa Rabbee. All of this bala` that is coming to me or my family, my friends or my beloveds, take it away with Your Rahmah, for the sake of Rasoolullah (s). Yaa Rabbee, if this year I am not going to make millions, at least give me rizq that is enough for me, halal. I don’t have to resort to haram.”
Mashaa-Allah, in my country they say they are mullahs but they are trading in drugs. What kind of mullah are you? Don’t resort to haram. When we read Surah Yaseen and make du’a, we are asking Allah (swt) to shelter us from all of that.
May Allah (swt) forgive us. We’re not able to do any of that but we always resort to Allah (swt)’s Maghfirah, His Forgiveness and His Rahmah. I recently came across a verse, asta’eedhu billah:
وَلَئِن قُتِلْتُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ
Wa la’in qutiltum fee sabeelillah aw muttum la-maghfiratu minAllahi wa rahmatahu khayrun mimmaa yajma`oon.
And if ye are slain, or die, in the way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all they could amass. (Surat Aali-Imran, 3:157)
Certainly a forgiveness from Allah (swt) and a mercy from Allah (swt) is better than whatever they are gathering. Don’t be angry that somebody is gathering billions and trillions of dollars. You are a mu’min. That’s why the Qur’an puts your heart at peace. Rasoolullah (s) came to put the hearts of people at peace. Messengers have come to put the hearts of people at peace. Awliyaullah have come to put the hearts of people at peace.
Sayyidina Abu as-Siddiq (r) was asked, “How did you reach your level?” He was the second of two in the cave. “How did you reach that level that Allah (swt) praised you as the second of two, right after Rasoolullah (s).” He said, “I looked and saw that there are two groups of people: those who want dunya and those who want Akhirah. I was the mureed of Allah (swt). I wanted Allah (swt).”
Why don’t we follow his way? Don’t go after dunya too much or after Akhirah too much, want Allah (swt). You’re going to return to Him. He is going to look at you and ask, “Did you do this? Did you not do this?” Forgiveness and Rahmah from Allah (swt) is better than everything they are gathering. May Allah (swt) forgive us.
I will mention one Hadith. Rasoolullah (s) said that when the dawn of every day comes, it will say, “O child of Adam. I am a new creation. I see what you are doing within me. Whatever you do that day, that day is recording it for you. That day will testify on the Day of Judgment what you have done. Do good because I will be a witness on you tomorrow.” When the night comes, it’s the same. The night will also be a witness on what you do. Try to do your best because when both of them leave, you never see them again. Yesterday is gone. Where is it? It has either gone into the scroll of good deeds or the scroll of bad deeds.
Ask forgiveness from Allah (swt). That erases all the bad deeds. Ask Rahmah from Allah (swt). That multiplies the good deeds. By that you enter Jannah. Forgiveness takes you out of Jahannam. Mercy puts you in Jannah. The third group will not go to Jahannam or Jannah but be gathered to Allah (swt). Try to be from that group. Those who want Allah (swt) are happy with Allah (swt). Whatever happens to you this year, train yourself to be happy.
Get botox. You will smile eternally like the politicians. You don’t know if he’s smiling or talking. Be eternally happy. What can you do? You have to laugh sometimes. May Allah (swt) forgive us. Yaa Rabbee, we are happy with You. Yaa Rabbee, be happy with us.
Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
