Jumu`ah Khutbah
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
O mu’mins! O Believers! Happy Eid, again, Eid Mubarak. May Allah (swt) allow us to live until the next Eid. How many Eids are there? They say two. Yes, we understand that there are two Eids in Islam. Every day they come up with a new Eid. “Today is the anniversary of this one, that one.”
No, in Islam you cannot come up with an imaginary celebration. In Islam, there are two Eids. Awliyaullah said there are actually three Eids: first is the Eid of Jumu`ah. Allah (swt) has decreed five prayers during the day and night every day. This dunya revolves around seven days. Whatever day you start, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, you return to the same day again.
Allah (swt) has decreed five prayers a day and there are seven days a week. When one turn or one revolution goes around or seven days, and the mu’min has completed his prescribed five prayers a day, Allah (swt) made for him a day that is Eid for him, and Allah (swt) rewards him for all of his prayers.
After Shahadah, there are four pillars of Islam. The second pillar is salah, prayer. When you complete the prayers five times a day for seven days, Allah (swt) is saying, you deserve a day, Yaumu ‘l-Jumu`ah. O People! Run to dhikrullah. Run to ijtima`, which is Friday at Dhuhr time. Why? Because Allah (swt) wants to reward you for completing the second pillar of Islam.
Every Jumu`ah, Allah (swt) orders Muslims to come for Salatu ‘l-Jumu`ah and dhikrullah. A
O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if you but knew! (Surah al-Jumu`ah, 62:9)
Run to the dhikr of Allah (swt). Run to the remembrance of Allah (swt). You come for the remembrance of Allah (swt). There is no fasting on Yaumu ‘l-Jumu`ah because it’s an Eid day, it’s a celebration. Rasoolullah (s) has said and it is in Muslim: inna ‘l-Jumu`ah hajjul fuqara. Coming to Salatu ‘l-Jumu`ah is the Hajj of the poor ones, those who cannot make it to the holy lands, to Arafah or Muzdalifah or Mina or Mecca or Medinah. They cannot make it out there so what do they do? Jumu`ah is the Hajj of the fuqaraa and the masaakeen, the poor and needy ones. Do you want Hajj? Come to Jumu`ah.
Where is the slaughter? On Hajj they slaughter sheep, cows or camels. What do we slaughter on Jumu`ah? Rasoolullah (s) said if you come in the first hour, it’s as if you have offered a camel. If you come in the second hour, it’s as if you have offered a cow. If you come in the third hour, it’s as if you have offered a goat or a sheep. If you come in the fourth hour, it’s as if you have offered a chicken. If you come at the end, it’s as if you have offered an egg. If you come early to the masjid, it’s as if you have a sacrifice.
We have one here in the audience. Every time he comes the earliest, he sends me a picture on Jumu`ah, “I’m here.” There’s nobody in the picture but him. He is offering a camel and he is faqir. He doesn't have any money. He comes to Hajj every Friday.
How many fuqaraa do we have in our zawiya? How many fuqaraa do we have around the world? How many poor ones are there around the khaniqas of the world? Many! They are doing Hajj every week and the rich ones in Beverly Hills, the rich ones in New York City on 5th Avenue, the rich ones in Tokyo, and the rich ones in Dubai, go to Hajj once a year and they are heedless of the Hajj once a week. Yes, they go to Jumu`ah but knowing what Jumu`ah is about makes you appreciate that day.
The earlier you come to Jumu`ah, the bigger your sacrifice is and it will be Hajj for you. That is why it’s not allowed to fast on Jumu`ah. You cannot fast only on Jumu`ah but you can couple it with another day.
Alhamdulillah, every Jumu`ah we come with that intention. Allah (swt) is telling you, We give. Allah (swt) gives through Rasoolullah (s), the mercy to mankind. Rasoolullah (s) is the mercy to humanity. People do not understand the true meaning of Rasoolullah (s). We understand bits and pieces here and there. We hear from this one and that one. We read in this book or that book but Rasoolullah (s) has every door of Rahmah that Allah (swt) has created for human beings. You just have to find it. You have to follow him and find it.
There are three Eids for Muslims. One is every week which is Yaumu ‘l-Jumu`ah which is because you have completed the five daily prayers for seven days. The second Eid is Eidu ‘l-Fitr, when you break your fast. You have completed the third pillar of Islam: siyam. When the Ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) completes the fasting of Ramadan, Allah (swt) will give them maghfirah from all of their sins and freedom from the Fire.
Rasoolullah (s) said if you come to Jumu`ah, your sins will be forgiven and you will end up in Paradise. That is what you have earned. That is what we are all seeking. What are we in dunya for? To eat, drink and go on vacation and swim? Now it’s the swimming season. Who is the mushrik? Your ego. Your ego wants to be in a bikini or a speedo. Allah (swt) says, “Don’t do it,” and the ego says, “Do it.” Who do you choose? The ego. You have committed shirk. You have disobeyed the Creator and obeyed a creation against the Creator.
You are in this dunya to receive that bara’ah from Allah (swt) and His Messenger (s) so that you are free from the oath or agreement that you have made with your ego. You have made friendship with the ego. You have made friends with Shaytan. But when puberty comes through, Allah (swt) says, now it’s time to break that contract with Shaytan. Now it’s time to break that contract with your ego. Khaalifi ’n-nafsa wa ‘l-hawaa. “Disobey, come against your ego and your desires.” That’s what we are seeking in this dunya.
Special days are days of forgiveness and you will be entered into Jannah. The second Eid that we are talking about is when you complete fasting. Allah (swt) will forgive you and free you from the Fire. Of course the Eids for the Ummah are two but we added the third one, which is the Eid of Yaumu ‘l-Jumu`ah. Allah (swt) forgives the sins on that day as well and honors you with whatever He wants to dress you with.
The third Eid is Eidu ‘l-Adha, the Eid of slaughter. We call this the Big Eid because it is the biggest of the three Eids. At the end of this pillar of Islam, Hajj, Allah (swt) forgives. There is maghfirah. That’s why we are celebrating. What do they do on Eid? They slaughter. What do they slaughter? They slaughter four types of animals: the camel, the cow, the goat and the sheep. What else? The age. The camel that is under five years of age cannot be slaughtered. A cow that is under the age of two years of age cannot be slaughtered. I think the goat is one year and I think the sheep is not less than six months.
After slaughtering, you take rocks and go to the Jamaraat from Mina to stone Shaytan. “I have slaughtered my animal and now I am stoning Shaytan.” How come a sheep that is only 6 months of age and a camel should be 5 years? Awliyaullah have said that as there is zhaahir, there is baatin. As there is a physical understanding and appearance to your actions, there is also an inner meaning. After you stand on `Arafah, Allah (swt) has decreed that you have to make a sacrifice. Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) was the first one to start that. The spiritual meaning of that sacrifice is your own ego, cattle that is inside of you that only wants to eat, drink and mate.
If your ego has the character of a camel, it has kibr, arrogance. You need to work on your camel much longer than you need to work on the sheep. The sheep is an animal that is very easy. It goes along with everybody. It has submitted. That is why in six months you will be good. Your ego has submitted. But if you are a camel, a proud, arrogant one, you need more work. You need to wait five years to make that camel ready for sacrifice.
You slaughter your ego and then you throw rocks that you get on Muzdalifah on Shaytan. What are these rocks? What is Muzdalifah? What is Al-Mashari ‘l-Haram? Everything has a physical appearance and spiritual meaning. How can you repel Shaytan away? With Nooru ‘l-Qur’an, the Light of Allah (swt)’s Divine Words, Divine Knowledge and with the Noor of the Divine Knowledge that Rasoolullah (s) has received. That is the Noor that you throw the darkness away with. You chase Shaytan with Noor. Whenever he whispers in your ear, you say, “This is another rock in your face.”
Throw the evidence of the Qur’an on him, throw the evidence from the Sunnah on him. This is the Noor that Allah (swt) has sent to me and I am throwing it at you, O cursed one! Don’t you curse Shaytan while throwing the stones? You have to. Say, “Yaa Rabbee. This is for Your rida and this is against Shaytan!”
The Noor that is your heart at Muzdalifah, Al-Mashari ‘l-Haram, that sacred, holy area is your qalb. The Qur’an has come down to the heart. You take what you need of Noor from that area, pebbles, and you throw it at Shaytan.
First you slaughter your ego. You free yourself from its egoistic desires, then your heart enlightens. It finds life and in your heart comes Nooru ‘l-iman, Nooru ‘l-Qur’an, Nooru ‘l-Sunnah, Nooru ‘l-itibah, Nooru ‘l-Muhabbah. All of these lights come down. Choose what you want and throw it at Shaytan.
That is what we are in dunya for. We are here to sacrifice our cow that wants to eat, drink and mate. We have to offer our sheep, our cattle, our goat or whatever it is. Yaa Rabbee, I have sacrificed my animalistic desires and I am in Your Way. However You order me, I will be like that. If You say this is forbidden, it’s forbidden. If it’s allowed, it is allowed. We have to understand the meanings of manasiq. We all read the books but what about the spiritual meaning? We have to work on the inside. It’s not only the outer meaning.
Jumu`ah is Eid after you complete your prescribed prayers for seven days, Eidu ‘l-Fitr is Eid after you complete your fasting and today is the Eid after you complete Hajj. After you complete Arafah when you complete Hajj then comes forgiveness. Allah (swt) forgives you and gives you the diploma that you are accepted in His Jannah. May Allah (swt) make us from them.
For the poor ones like I see here and myself too, we have no energy to go or no money to go or no ride to take, Allah (swt) has given you through Rasoolullah’s Holy Hadith:
الجمعة حج الفقراء
Al-Jumu`ah Hajju ‘l-fuqara.
Friday is the Hajj of the poor. (al-Jami`a as-Sagheer, Imam Suyuti, from ibn `Abbas)
Your Hajj is every Jumu`ah. Come to Hajj. Where is your ihram? What does it mean to put ihram on? What happened to your nice Gucci suit? Where is your nice Yves St. Laurent purse that you carry? Where are your nice Giorgio Armani t-shirts? When you put ihram on, you give them away. Where is your Mercedes? You go in a bus if you’re lucky or you walk like the others or you go on the roof of some pick-up truck. There is no more dunya.
If you want Allah (swt), you have to understand there is no more dunya. You have to understand how to come to Him. You put on the ihram and say, “Labbayk! Yaa Rabbee, I have left everything.” No more perfume, no more oud, no more musk or any of that French perfumery. Nothing is allowed from dunya, otherwise you’re not in complete ihram. Your ihram is not acceptable. The only thing you have to say is, “Labbayk Allah (swt). Yaa Rabbee, at Your service.”
Where are we from that? We are far away from that because we have not sacrificed your ego yet. Offer your ego as a sacrifice. That mule, cow, lion, tiger or whatever characteristic it is, you have to offer it for sacrifice. Yaa Rabbee, my ego desires this way. You told me this way. I will sacrifice my ego and I will follow Your Way. That’s how you sacrifice your ego. You cannot kill yourself. You cannot reach your ego. Where is your ego? You can’t even see it but it means you kill the desires of the ego. They say, to crush the desires. That’s how you kill your ego.
Rasoolullah (s) said to Hadrat Fatima (r), “After the prayers, go watch your sacrifice being slaughtered. For every drop of blood, Allah (swt) will forgive the sins....” (al-Hakim’s Al-Mustadrak)
It is said the drops of blood are the desires of the ego. For every desire of the ego you shed, Allah (swt) forgives one sin and elevates you to His pious people.
May Allah (swt) forgive us. Stick to the ABC’s. There is no need to go deep into spiritual meanings when the ABC’s are lacking. Stick to the salaat, zakat, siyaam and Hajj. When you perfect them then you can go into tariqah. Otherwise if your foundation is crooked, whatever you build is going to fall down.
