Hadith:

“Allah gives his mercy to those who are giving sahoor and those partaking of it.”

Hadith:

“Partake sahoor because all of it is baraka.” (Bukhari)

Why is Ramadan 30 days? It is related that the Prophet (s) said that when Adam (as) ate from the forbidden tree, that fruit stayed in his stomach undigested for 30 days.

Allah (swt) made it mandatory on His servants to be hungry for 30 days. That is why it is mentioned to be fasting 30 days.

So when Adam (as) ate the fruit in Paradise, it gave him strength for 30 days, and it was not digested, as it was a strong fruit from Paradise. For that, Allah made his children to be hungry for 30 days.

Other explanations say that the Ramadan is 30 days because every hasanat is multiplied by ten, so that is like [fasting] 300 days and if anyone fasts the 6 days of Shawwal, that is another 60 days, so it as if he fasted the entire year, and this is [based on the] hadith of the Prophet (s).

عن جرير بن عبد الله رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : " شهر رمضان معلق بين السماء والأرض ولا يرفع إلى الله إلا بزكاة الفطر" .

The Prophet (s) said, “The fast of Ramadan is always hanging between earth and heaven and will never be reaching heaven until the Zakat al-Fitr has been paid.” (as-Suyuti in al-Jami` as-Sagheer, ibn Shaheen in Targheeb from Abu Hurayrah (r) with a weak chain.)

Zakat al-Fitr

The Zakat al-Fitr is the Zakat that has to be given before Eid and today it might be they evaluate it for 5 or 7 dollars for one person. And unfortunately what people are doing with Zakat al-Fitr is giving it late, and that is the mistake of the people collecting not the ones giving. The Prophet (s) said that the fast of Ramadan needs to be sent up by eid prayer. And the Zakat al-Fitr must be paid first.

In third world countries, when you write a petition to the government you must stamp it. That stamp is from the government and you cannot send it without that.

So the ‘official’ stamp of Ramadan is the Zakat al-Fitr . And what do they do? They collect and put it in banks. But Zakat al-Fitr must be distributed before Eid. I am seeing them even collecting during the Eid prayer time. And the time of the prayer also is past; it should be prayed at ishraq time.

So who are they collecting for at that time? It is already gone.

So that is why different schools of thought say you can give the Zakat al-Fitr early, even in the first ten days. That allows it to be distributed. You must distribute it to the poor.

Zakat al-Fitr must not go for building a mosque, or a school or for other thing. It must go to the poor. [Some scholars say] that Zakat al-mal can be used for those things but the Zakat al-Fitr must be given to the poor.

This is the second ten days, that is the first are maghfirah and the second ten are rahmah, mercy, and we hope Allah will send His rahmat on us in these ten days.
