Human Beings Are Gifted

from Seven Divine Attributes

A`oodhu billahi ‘s Sami` al-`Aleem min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.

May Allah (swt) forgive us and forgive those who have passed on. Somebody in Dallas today texted that their mother passed away and they wanted du`a. Alhamdulillah, we gifted the rewards of the recitation to her soul. May Allah (swt) have mercy on her and forgive her sins and admit her to Jannah, inshaa-Allah, overlook her shortcomings and admit her to the proximity of Rasoolullah (s) and Ahlu ‘l-Bayt, Sahaabah kiram (r), Awliyaullah and Anbiyaullah, inshaa-Allah.

This is how it is. This is dunya. I remembered something that Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said in one of his suhbahs. He said that Allah (swt) has created an angel. This angel’s job is to utter four words. These words are, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” The order was given at the start of dunya for this angel to start reciting with one breath. At the start of dunya, that angel started saying, “Laaaaa ilaaaaah.” When he says, “illa-Llah,” dunya finishes and Qiyamah is established. One, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” is the life of this dunya. That angel is still praising Allah (swt) with that one breath, still mentioning His Beautiful Name, declaring the Oneness and the Lordship or Godship if you can say that.

Mashaa-Allah, everybody creates a god for themselves. They themselves become gods and goddesses. Divos and divas, is that what it is? I know “divas.” I don’t know about “divos.” There's a divo in Geneva, Switzerland. You’re making gods. Everybody creates their own imaginary gods. Some people follow along with the same idea, others go out of that idea and establish their own way. At the end, they call themselves goddesses and gods.

That angel is declaring the Godship of Allah (swt) alone. Whatever happens in this dunya, that angel is reciting Tawheed of Allah (swt), the Creator of Heavens and Earth. Everything praises Him. He is saying, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” When, “illa-Llah,” finishes as Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) has said and it has come in the Hadith of Rasoolullah (s), Qiyamah comes. That means the dunya from beginning to end has no reality. It is going to evaporate. When it starts for you and ends for you, that’s your dunya. When it starts for him and ends for him, that’s his dunya. When it started with the first man and is going to end with the last man, that is dunya, all of it. There’s nothing in it. There is no reality for something that’s called dunya.

Where is dunya? Where did yesterday go? It’s in memories. It’s in la-la land, gone. What happens to this day tonight when Maghrib comes in? It’s gone. It’s only in your memory, in your imagination and what you have done. It becomes like a shadow or imagination. Tomorrow is the same. Where are the years that you lived before today? They have gone into the book of imagination, the book of tales, the book of stories, the book of memories, gone.

Dunya has no reality. That angel is saying, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” and when he finishes, dunya is finished and Qiyamah comes. What does that mean? Who owns everything? He still owns it now but everybody will see that Allah (swt) is Azaliyyun Abadiyyun. Allah (swt) is Pre-Eternal and Post-Eternal. All that remains is Allah (swt). This dunya and whatever is in it is nothing but khayaal, a dream. It can be a nightmare for some people.

Alhamdulillah, for us as long as we are at this door it’s not a nightmare. It’s a sweet dream. But for some people it’s a nightmare. It’s a bad dream. It can be a good dream but you’re going to wake up. When Qiyamah comes, you’ll wake up and say, “What’s happening now?” Allah (swt) is the Only One to remain, always remaining and He is as He was, as they say

The smart one, `aqil, who uses his mind, is like a honeybee. He takes from everything: the nightmares of this world and the good dreams of this world. He takes from everything and he brings out honey that has a cure for every disease. What is `aql? It is the Qur’an. Allah (swt) sent you Qur’an al-Kareem. It has nooru ‘l-`aql in it. It has the light of your mind in the Holy Book. The Heavenly Messages are the light of your mind. If you keep your mind away from Qur’an al-Kareem, you are not seeing with light. You are in darkness. Qur’an al-Kareem is the heavenly light for you. Qad ja’akum min Allahi noor.

O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary). There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book. (Surat al-Ma’idah, 5:15)

“We have brought down for you Noor,” noor of your mind. When you use your mind by understanding Qur’an al-Kareem, shining it on your life, you will walk with a flashlight, otherwise you are in the darkness. What you have done will be visible to you on that day.

Awliyaullah have said the `aqil, the one who uses the Noor of Qur’an al-Kareem, using his mind and following that flashlight, takes from everything and makes honey that has a cure for the diseases and beeswax. Does beeswax have benefits? Yes, candles. The honey that the Waliyullah is getting out of all that he is taking in this life is a shifaa`, a cure for all the diseases of the heart and the wax that is in that honey is also a candle to give you more light.

It is said that whenever a mu’min sits or stands, he is taking wisdom. What is the wisdom that you need to collect in this dunya, O insaan, O human being? What you need to be running after in this dunya is not the dream world that is going to go, no, it is ma`rifatullah. When this world started for you and before it ends, what you need to accomplish is ma`rifatullah, to know Allah (swt). Who is trying? A few.

As much as you know Allah (swt), as much you will have taste in your heart. Do you have taste in your heart sometimes? Sometimes. Most of the time, not yet. The more that you know Allah (swt), that taste will go from being scarce, rare, seldom, often, very often, frequent, to all the time. That’s what you need to reach. You need your heart to have contentment, satisfaction, happiness, accepting what Allah (swt) has decreed for you from everything all the time. That is the maqam Waliyullah has reached. Every state that he is in, whether he is poor or rich, sick or healthy, old or young, this or that, he is always tasting that sweetness of being with Allah (swt).

That is why Sayyidina Yusuf (a) was in the worst of jails but when they came to tell him to get out, what did he say? “Go back to your king and let him find out what happened to me.” He stayed in jail. He didn’t care because in his jail he was tasting the sweetness of the company of Allah (swt). Outside was the same for him as the inside. In jail was the same as in a palace for him. It doesn’t matter. When you are with Allah (swt) by heart, that sweetness is with you wherever you are. That is for Awliyaullah.

If you only experience that rarely or seldom, often or frequently, then you have work to do. You have not reached that yet. Awliyaullah have said, when you are ascending ma`rifatullah, knowing Allah (swt), your heart will be more and more in happiness, contentment and ease because He is with you. Try to reach that in this dunya. Everybody’s heart is troubled in this dunya. They are anxious and worried. They are basically in unhappiness and ungratefulness, always depressed. Why are you depressed? Because you’re not with Allah (swt). Your heart is not with Allah (swt). Your heart is in a vacuum, in a dunya that has no reality. In the end it’s going to be imagination. It will fold up and go. People don’t remember the names of so many people who have gone before, one generation, two generations, three generations and gone. People are unknown except Awliyaullah.

Awliyaullah have reached ma`rifatullah in this world and they have reached their maqam as Ahlu ‘l-Llah in the Hereafter. Not Ahlu ‘d-dunya or Ahlu ‘l-Akhirah but Ahlu ‘l-Llah, not ones who wanted dunya or Jannah but the ones who wanted Allah (swt) and they stayed with Him only.

Know Allah (swt). “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah” is the start. What is the end of, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah”? If you are consistent with, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” as Awliyaullah were, you will reach a certain level. What does, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” mean? “No god.” You will be with nobody that claims to be a god, even if it’s yourself. Does your self claim to be god? Yes. Your nafs is the first one to say, “I am your highest lord.” Anaa rabbukumu ‘l-`alaa. Fir`awn’s ego reached such a level that it claimed itself to be the highest lord. Not lord, `alaa. He claimed, “You may have so many gods but I am over all of them, on the top.”

When you say, “Laa ilaaha” you take away all of the false deities that people are claiming but you have to take away the deity that your ego is claiming to be. When you say, “Laa ilaaha,” you are getting rid of your own ego, you are leaving it. Where do you go? “Illa-Llah.” I am leaving the side of my ego that claims to be a god and I am going to the real God, to confirm His Lordship, His `Uloohiyya. He is Allah (swt). He is the Lord. He is my Lord. He is God. Laa ilaaha is not me or it is not a god”

That is when you leave yourself. That is Fana. “Get away from me, O my bad ego that claims to be another deity or god that is on top of everybody else.” Your ego commands you and everybody else. You get that out. Stay with “illa-Llah.” That is when you become happy. When you are with your ego, you are always angry, always upset, always greedy, always jealous, always envious. When you leave your ego, you are with Allah (swt) and all you see is what Allah (swt) decreed. You are happy and content. That is the highest level. Ma`rifatullah. That angel is making Dhikr of, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah,” until the end of this dunya and then it will evaporate. Get the ma`rifatullah. Get the knowledge of Allah (swt).

I’ll mention one thing that I learned to allow you to know a little bit of Allah (swt)’s Attributes and Actions. Everybody knows that Allah (swt) created the Heavens and earth. Huwa ‘l-ladhee khalaqa ’s-samawati wa ’l-ard. Wa maa baynahuma.

It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition? (Surah as-Sajdah, 32:4)

He created Heavens and earth and whatever is in between in six days. The creation is everything in Heavens, all the angels and spirits, the Jannah, the Naar, the `Arsh, the Kursi and everything on earth: insects, animals, rivers, mountains, lakes, people, and jinn. Awliyaullah have said that six days means six levels, six periods, six maraatib, ranks. Each level is attributed to the six Attributes of Allah (swt). For each level Allah (swt) has given His creation a light from His Names. He says, Wa in min shay’in illa yusabbihu bi hamdihi.

The seven heavens and the earth, and all beings therein, declare His glory: there is not a thing but celebrates His praise; And yet ye understand not how they declare His glory! Verily He is Oft-Forbear, Most Forgiving! (Surat al-Isra, 17:44)

Everything in existence praises Allah (swt), make tasbeeh. What is everything? Everything in Heavens and earth. Look at these six Attributes that Allah (swt) has given to His creation. That is ma`rifatullah, for you to understand a little bit about Allah (swt). Everything that praises has to have life. You have to have life to praise. If there is no haya, there is no tasbeeh. A live one makes tasbeeh. The first level is haya. Allah (swt) has granted life to all of His creation.

The second level is knowledge. To make tasbeeh, you need to know who you’re making it for and in what form. If I say, “Abdul Latif, make tasbeeh.” What do you say? You mention Allah (swt) and you mention the form. Everything that makes tasbeeh has to have `ilm, knowledge about the one that I’m praising and the form that I’m praising that one in. Everything in creation was given haya, life, to make tasbeeh and given knowledge to know who they praise and to know in what form they praise.

The third level is qudra. They were given power. If you have no power, can you make tasbeeh? You need to be robust. Alhamdulillah, everybody is robust during Dhikr. Shaytan comes and says, “Sleep.” If you want to make Dhikrullah or tasbeeh, you have to have power.

Haya, `ilm, qudra. The fourth level is will, iraada. You have to want to do it. Everything in creation also has the will power to praise Allah (swt), makhsoos, especially for him. He is the One I want to praise. A human being has to praise Allah (swt) in the form that Allah (swt) has shown. You have to want it. “I want to praise Allah (swt).” Nowadays they praise everything else except Allah (swt).

The fifth level is sama`. You have to hear what you’re praising. Don’t you have to hear what you’re saying? I’m saying, “Allah (swt), Allah (swt).” Everything that praises Allah (swt) hears what it is saying.

The sixth level is basr. Everything that is praising Allah (swt) will be granted a chance as Allah (swt) wants to view as He opens to them. In this life when Allah (swt) created Heavens and earth, and you are part of Heavens with your soul and you are part of this earth with your body, you are also praising Allah (swt) by having life. So, your life has to be to praise Him, knowledge to know about Him and what form to praise Him, qudra, power to praise and worship Him, will to go for Him and nothing else, sama, to hear what you’re saying, how you’re reciting and enjoy what you’re saying and basr. Allah (swt) will show you from His Noor. He can show you directly or indirectly.

What happens if you obtain all of these six levels in dunya? What is missing? Kalaam. Human beings are blessed by Allah (swt) with seven Divine Attributes: life, knowledge, power, will, hearing, seeing and speaking. Which one in creation speaks except a human being? Nobody. They all make noises but who has the proper language and ways of talking? Insaan. There are six levels in dunya and if you are from the beloved ones, from Ahlu ‘Llah, you get the seventh level, kalaam.

Laa yatakalamoona illa man adhina lahu ‘r-Rahmanu wa qaala sawaabaa.

The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right. (Surah an-Naba, 78:38)

In Surah Taha, wa radiya lahu qawla.

On that Day shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by (Allah) Most Gracious and whose word is acceptable to Him. (Surah Taha, 20:109)

Kalam with Allah (swt) is only allowed when this dunya is finished and Allah (swt) gives permission and He is happy with what he is saying. That’s the level you need to reach. You need to reach a level where Allah (swt) will allow you, and will speak to you on the Day of Judgement. On the Day of Judgment there will be a group of people that Allah (swt) will not speak to or look at. It is only for the blessed ones who say the truth and Allah (swt) allows them.

In this world, Allah (swt) has given you six Divine Attributes, O insaan. The seventh one, the complete one, is to speak with Allah (swt) on the Day of Judgement if He is pleased with what you say. That’s what you need to struggle for. Can I have a word with the king? You have to work for it. Can I have a word with the mayor? You have to work for it. Can I have a word with God? That’s so easy, you can speak to Him anytime. No, you can’t. They say you have a direct channel between you and God. How? “He appeared to me. He talks to me.” Good luck.

Kalam. If you are able to reach the seventh level in Yaumu ‘l-Qiyamah where Allah (swt) will allow you to be among the blessed ones who can speak with Him and when you speak, you don’t speak for yourself. Basically, you speak for your brothers and sisters and the rest of humanity that Allah (swt) forgives their shortcomings and their sins. That is your job, O mu’min. Your job is to be for others, but everyone is for himself.

We have a long way to go. Start with, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah.” Take yourself away from dunya and turn to Mawla. Thank Him for the six favors He has given you, the six Divine Attributes that He has given you and try to secure the last one when you speak on the Day of Judgement and Allah (swt) accepts what you say. Of course, that is for Rasoolullah (s) and those who follow his path.

May Allah (swt) forgive us. May Allah (swt) make us from Ahlu Laa ilaaha illa-Llah. May Allah (swt) make us from Ahlu ‘t-Tawheed, from Ahlu ‘Llah. Ameen.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
