`Asr Suhbah on Day of Arafah
A`oodhu billahi mina ‘ash-Shaytani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. Inshaa-Allah Allah will share with us the worship of the Hajjis and establish and confirm us on the Truth.
Human beings need to learn and, O Believers, I wish I be part of you, a real Believer or a real mu’min, and all this is in the Hands of Allah (swt) by means of the blessings of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). There are too many issues you encounter in your life and when you think about what you have achieved, if you will be judged according to what you have achieved, you will find that you did not achieve anything!
Awliyaullah are carrying a responsibility. If you want to be a wali it is open, so follow the structure and you will become a wali. If you like to become a mureed, follow the structure of a mureed, like when you buy something they give you instructions. Follow the instructions and you will find yourself achieving many things, but if we don’t follow the instructions, it means we are not accepting what Allah (swt) has said in the Holy Qur’an about instructions. Don’t say, "There are only instructions for our daily life, how to deal, how to work, how to follow a computer." No, the most important instructions are to follow what Allah (swt) wants us to follow and He wants us, O human beings, all of us...we are mentioning the points every day, but as if...you know the magnet, if you put them together they attract each other, one positive and one negative. If you put two negatives they repel, put two positives they repel, but put positive and negative together and they attract, it will hold.
إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّـيِّئَاتِ
Good deeds waive the sins. (Surah Hud, 11:114)
If your instructions lead you to know what is positive to do every day, it will end up eating all the sayyiaat through all the hasanaat that you are coming up with, when you are going to sleep. These hasanaat that you are doing, Allah said in Holy Qur’an they will waive all sins, nothing will be left, and this is an achievement that we follow the instructions that Prophet (s) has shown us, where Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an:
وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا
Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)
Whatever the Prophet has given you... Don’t say, “Okay, I will do my prayers later, I will read Qur’an later,” no, the instructions don’t say that. Allah (swt) has given us tawqeet, timing, at that moment, at that time you pray: Fajr, Zhuhr, `Asr, Maghrib, `Isha. You might find what I am saying is boring, but I am getting myself, if I didn’t check before I spoke on something I might say, “Boring, you are speaking enough, I am hearing a lot of these things.” No! What we are saying has been stamped, certified authenticated by Awliyaullah. They know what we need, they know instructions, we don’t know instructions, because we don’t want to know as that would be extra work. We want to eat, drink, play, listen, spend some time. I am not speaking to those who are here, or to myself, although we are part of it, but this is a general declaration for everyone that it is not simple, but if you follow the instructions it will raise you from no `amal to full `amal. It will take away all kinds of diseases in you, spiritual or physical, and you have to keep doing it non-stop, I mean daily.
So what Prophet (s) gave to Awliyaullah and Awliyaullah gave to us as followers, Prophet (s) taught us how to deal with each other, to be humble with each other, not to be an angry person as Shaytan will enter him; an angry person will never succeed, so we have to be people who are humble.
First, he said for men, our shaykh, may Allah bless his soul, it is for men and women, but he is speaking about what is the men's wazeefa, duty to do, which of course is different from what women can do, not because of superiority, no, we are not speaking of superiority here, but we are speaking of how much men can carry more than women, and sometimes women carry more than men, and all of this is to follow instructions. Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an, “You have to obey Me, and you have to obey My Prophet (s), and you have to obey the Pious People!” Is it clear? It has to be clear as it is not our words:
أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ
Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)
The whole `ilm, knowledge, that we can achieve, and don’t think you cannot achieve it: you can achieve as we were saying at the beginning, all `ilm can be achieved and you find yourself on the Day of Judgement that you achieved something because you followed what the ayah is asking: atee`oollaha,“obey Allah”, and to obey is so easy for Awliyaullah, but for us common people it is very difficult and Shaytan tries in so many different ways to take away what we have achieved in that hour or forty-five minutes.
Although these black flies, which many Awliyaullah say and experienced, that Allah (swt) created Creation for love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and these black flies are part of that, so they are always after human beings, is it not? To disturb them, and Allah will raise those who are patient. Even for a fly coming on your hand, Awliyaullah, Grandshaykh (may Allah bless his soul) said, “Rahmatullahi wasi`ah, Allah's Mercy is so great that even if a black fly comes on you, Allah (swt) will grant you endless rewards!” He said something that may cause some `ulama to say, “We don't know (about that)”, but Awliyaullah know, as Allah (swt) said:
أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاء اللّهِ لاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Behold! Verily on the Friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surah Yunus, 10:62)
Awliyaullah must not fear or be sad because Allah gave them knowledge, they know what is good and what is bad, they know when a black fly comes on our hand or head Allah will reward us because it disturbs us and when we are patient, Allah rewards that.
It is said that either Imam Ghazali (q) or Imam Junayd (q) was writing an important letter to intercede for someone to not be hanged by the court because he was innocent. As he was writing, a black fly came began to drink the ink, it was thirsty. Allah (swt) was looking to see what His servant is going to do, and he said, “O Allah! You created Creation first from Noor an-Nabi (s) and You made everyone to be in need of Prophet (s) on Judgment Day and in this life, and this small fly coming to quench its thirst from this ink is also part of Your Creation and for Allah's sake and for Rasool’s sake I am letting that black fly drink from the ink until it quenches its thirst, even though I am busy writing this important letter.” So he gave importance from the inspiration that even that insect was created like any other creation, from the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! That is why it is said that the life of insects or life of worms...when you dig to bury someone or to plant a tree you see living worms...how do they live, breathe and eat with a thick pile of sand or soil over them? Who brings their food to them when they are under earth? They have food, they are eating and drinking and praising Prophet (s), and they are praising Allah (swt)! Allah made their soul, their life from their praising and when they stop praising Allah (swt) they will die, their life is finished.
During our day so much headache comes and so many things you have to achieve through your day in order that you will be able to obey Allah and obey the Prophet and those who are on top of you, scholars, Awliyaullah. Awliyaullah know, as there are many things that Allah provided them with to teach to us, and one of them is what Grandshaykh (q) said: Allah (swt) said if one person reads one istighfaar, that hasanaat takes away sayi`aat, and he said for sure the sayi`aat will be erased when you are reciting and praising Allah and making istighfar! So he said if someone fell into any difficulty, and who does not fall into difficulty, all of us fall into difficulties!
You know Abu Yazeed al-Bistami (q), a great scholar and great teacher and a big Wali, he knew he was praying in the best and correct way, he knew that he was doing his best. One day he was in the jungle, as Awliya like to go in jungles, deserts and villages, they don't like to be in cities, that is why you find their graves outside the cities, but now cities came to them. Something happened within Abu Yazeed al-Bistami (q) and he felt perhaps that he was doing well. He said, “Yaa Rabbee! I am asking you, I want to pray for You a prayer that no jinn, no ins, no human beings, were able to pray for You, as I am going to pray for You two raka`ats that has nothing in it but complete obedience.”
He heard a voice coming from a higher Wali, higher or an angel saying, “Go ahead, let us see.” He did not realize that Sayyidina Musa (a) did the same thing when he said, “O Allah, let me see You!” because he thought himself...there was something in him showing superiority, Allah doesn’t like that. So what did Sayyidina Musa (a) say? “Let me see You!” he went directly There. Abu Yazeed al-Bistami (q) said similar to Sayyidina Musa (a), “I will do that without any khaatir, no thought will distract me from these two raka`ats, I will only focus on You.” He said, “Allahu Akbar,” and entered the prayer with complete focus and meditation, as Allah (swt) said, “The one who prays is in the Hand of Allah (swt).”
A saying of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya:
The servant exists between Hands of Allah at two times: while standing during performing prayer and standing on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever fulfills the rights of the first standing will, in fact, be facilitating the second one and whoever considers this easy and does not pay due attention to it, he will be making the other one difficult for himself. (Fawaa’id)
It means no gossip or distractions come to their mind, it is clear. Now anyone who says, “Allahu Akbar”, too many gossips come, but he prayed clean. When he said, “As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaah, as-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaah,” he heard a voice coming from a wali or an angel, “Yaa Zhaalim! O Oppressor! Who gave you permission to oppress yourself? What I gave you, you oppressed it and did not go according to what you should! You oppressed yourself and oppressors are going to Hellfire!” He turned and looked, but was not seeing anything, but he heard that voice, “Go and repent for what you have done!”
As soon as he said, “As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaah, as-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaah,” that axe came on his head, “Go and repent!” Quickly he went, renewed his wudu, prayed two raka`ats and said, “Yaa Rabbee, teach me!”
Then he heard a voice, inspiration through his heart, “Yaa `Abdee! I gave you two legs and raised you to be able to walk when you were young!” You see one and two-years-old, children crawling, then standing and falling. “I gave you to be raised well and I balanced you. Today you disturbed the balance I made for human beings, you leaned more on your right leg than on your left leg. If I am going to judge you according to My Mercy based on that high intention you made that you will make two raka`ats that no one before prayed it, no ins, no human and no jinn, you are going to Hellfire because My Judgement is going to be tough, because according to the arrogance in you, ‘I want to pray two raka`ats…’ Who are you?”
So he fell into a problem, went into a difficulty, although he was trying to pray and do something that Allah would be happy with, but because of the smell of arrogance inside the prayer Allah was not happy. What did Grandshaykh (q) say? “If a person worshipped Allah (swt) all the worship of jinn and ins and you add them all together, no way he can release himself from a sin!” That means if he worshipped all accumulated worship of all ins and jinn and a person was able to do that, still his prayer could not release himself from sin, and that’s why Allah (swt) said in the Holy Qur’an:
إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّـيِّئَاتِ
Good deeds waive the sins. (Surah Hud, 11:114)
Hasanaat waives the sins, but be humble, don't say, “I want to be a wali.” Being a wali is not something you ask for, it is something that you are granted. Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said, “There is a medicine for that person who cannot release his sins through his `amal, but there is a way that Awliyaullah will teach them how to release themselves from that.” That is why a wali is important in the life of people, because he can tell them what to do in order to advance quickly, to move forward. So Grandshaykh (q) said, “Ilaajuhaa, the treatment for the sin that all the worship of jinn and ins cannot erase is erased through these four instructions, 1, 2, 3, 4.” That does not mean you do these four things and don't pray, no, prayer is prayer, you have to pray your prayers.
The Sahaabah (r) asked the Prophet (s) “Does a mu’min make zina?” and he said, “Rubbamaa, possibly.” They asked, “Does a mu’min steal?” and he said, “Maybe.” Then they asked “Does a mu’min lie (yakdhib)?” and the Prophet (s) said, “No, amma hadhihi fa laa, as for that no it is not possible.” First one is hal al-mu’min yasruq? Hal al-mu’min yaznee? Hal al-mu’min yakdhib? To lie? “No way to lie.” (Kanzu ’l-`Ummal, 8994)
So when Awliyaullah see this, they give very simple examples in dunya: someone goes to a company to be hired and they say no, he goes back and they say no, then he goes to your uncle, who is very well known, and they cannot say no, so now they say, although he doesn’t work like them, he is taking a salary without working, and still they say yes! Here Awliyaullah are telling you, “Do this and do this” and finally they are going to do it. So what is it?
1. Three times Shahaada, ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah.
2. 70 istighfaar.
3. 1 Fatihah. This is for men who fall into problems: he reads this until that problem is taken away.
4. Then, present them to Prophet (s), which is the Ihda: Ila hadrati ‘n-nabiyy (s) wa aalihi wa sahbihi ‘l-kiraam wa arwaahi aabaa’ina wa ummahaatina wa hadrat ustaadhina wa ustaadhi ustaadhina wa ‘s-siddiqeen al-Fatihah. This is to clean yourself, to be ready to take away from you all kinds of ma`asiyya, sins or difficulties.
5. Then, 300 istaghfirullah.
If you do this, it will be [honoring and written that you obeyed]:
وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا
Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)
“Whatever Prophet (s) told you to do, take,” because it is istighfaar, because it is the Qur’an, because it is repentance, because it is Fatihah and the heart of the Qur’an and Ihda to Prophet (s). That will save you, when you say “Astaghfirullah” Allah (swt) is happy and He erases all your sins! When you say Shahaadah it takes you from unbeliever to Believer and we become like converts, we must say also Shahaadah in order for our sins to be waived away! May Allah keep the Shahaada, Kalimat at-Tawheed in our hearts for dunya and Akhirah.
Bi-hurmati ‘l-habeeb bi hurmati ‘l-Fatihah.
