Intend to Keep the Best Worship

Shaykh Nour Mohamad Kabbani

31 January 2025 Dallas, TX USA

A`oodhu billahi ‘s Sami` al-`Aleem min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem.

Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.

Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi, yaa Sultan al-Awliya. Dastoor, yaa Sayyidee wa Mawlay. Madad, yaa RijaalAllah.

First of all, as-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. The ones who are quiet will get biryani at the end, so kids if you want to eat, you have to be quiet. May Allah (swt) always keep us together, keep us in majaalisu ‘d-dhikr, where we come together to remember our Lord, Allah (swt). We are not coming here together to remember dunya or what to plan for the future. We leave that to those whom Allah (swt) assigned. You don’t know the hikmah of what He assigned. Allah (swt) is Al-Khafid, Ar-Rafi. Does anybody know Asmau ‘l-Husna? Al-Khafid, The One Who brings down and The One Who raises up. He can bring down whoever He wants and He can raise up whoever He wants. Why do you object? The Muslim, the mu’min has to submit to Allah (swt)’s Will. How do you know His Will? He tells you His Names.

He says, I give honor and I give dishonor, Al-Mu’iz, Al-Mudhil. Allah (swt)’s Holy Names give you clues into what happens in this world. Don’t worry. Whoever He assigned to do these jobs, they can do whatever they were assigned to do. We don’t interfere. We sit here to remember our Lord, not to remember what to do in dunya. If you are from that crowd, this is the wrong majlis. You want to remember and plan what to do in dunya, you go to the clubs, the union halls or wherever you want to go.

In this place we are coming together to remember Allah (swt) and remember His Mercy. How do we know about His Mercy? From Awliyaullah. Don’t say that you have a big mind and can go directly to the Qur’an. That is not adab. Don’t say you can go directly to the Ahadith of Rasoolullah (s) and I can find my way from there. You will not understand the Ahadith. In his time even the Sahaabah used to ask, “What do you mean by this?” He would explain to them. What do we do? We go to Awliyaullah to learn the way to our Beloved Lord, our Beloved God, Allah (swt) and to know our way to Rasoolullah (s).

Do you know Sayyidina Junayd? They call him Sayyidu ‘t-Tayyifa, the Sayyid of the Crowd, the Sufi crowd. The Sufi crowd has love. The other crowds have love, no love, we don’t know. We leave it to them. Whoever says, “I am a Sufi, I am following the path of Awliyaullah,” has to have love in their hearts, otherwise they are not on the right path.

Sayyidina Junayd (q) went to the masjid on Jumu`ah. What time are you supposed to go to the masjid on Jumu`ah? You’re supposed to go early. Have you ever heard of that: Bengalis, Pakistanis, Arabs, Turks, Kurds? Rasoolullah (s) said the one who goes to the masjid earlier will have a bigger reward. Why do you come late then? The traffic of Dallas. That’s a good excuse. Sayyidina Junayd (q) went to Jumu`ah prayer early thinking he was the first one. Rasoolullah (s) said the first one there is like the one who has given Allah (swt) the sacrifice of a camel. The ones who come after become less and less until it becomes a chicken but still, it’s like you have given a sacrifice to Allah (swt) to feed the poor.

Sayyidina Junayd went to the masjid early. He heard a voice. Awliyaullah hear mala’ikah talking to them. Did Sayyida Maryam (r) hear the mala’ikah talking to her? Do you believe in the Qur’an or not? Wahabbis, do you believe in the Qur’an or not? They have to say “yes.” If they say “no,” they’re out of Islam. Was Sayyida Maryam (a) a prophet? No. Allah (swt) says, “Siddiqa.” Wa umuhu siddiqa.

Christ the son of Mary was no more than an apostle; many were the apostles that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food. See how Allah doth make His signs clear to them; yet see in what ways they are deluded away from the truth! (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:75)

His mother was a saint, a siddiqa, one who believes in Allah (swt) and everything that comes from His Divine Presence. His mother was Waliyatullah. Did angels speak to her? Yes, they did. Angels not only speak to Awliyaullah but also appear to them. Did Sayyidina Jibreel (a) appear to Hazrat Maryam or not? Mala’ikah can speak to Awliyaullah.

People ask, “How can he hear a voice? Is he psychotic?” No, they’re not psychotic. The homeless people under these bridges might not be psychotic. Be careful. They might be speaking to creatures that you don’t understand.

Sayyidina Junayd (q) heard a voice say, “Somebody was here before you.” He said, “Okay, I missed it this time.” The next Jumu`ah he came a little bit earlier. He hears the same voice again, “Somebody arrived here before you.” Every Friday he would come earlier and earlier until he prayed Fajr in the masjid. How early can you come? You cannot come for Tahajjud, the masjid is closed. You pray Tahajjud at home.

He came to Fajr so he would be the earliest. Again he heard the same voice, “Somebody arrived before you.” He looked but there was nobody except him, so he made a du`a, “Yaa Rabbee. Let me see him. Who is that one arriving before me? What is he doing?” It was said to him, “After you pray Jumu`ah today, the last one who comes out of the masjid is the one who arrived before you.”

Did you pray Jumu`ah today? Alhamdulillah. Who was the last one to leave the center? You were, mashaa-Allah. Sayyidina Junayd prayed and waited and people were still there. He waited until Asr and prayed Asr. He waited until everybody left and the last one to leave was a very old man. He grabbed him and said, “O shaykh. When do you come to the jama`ah?” He said, “I come at the time of adhan.”

“But I was told that you always arrive before me and beat me to the masjid. How is that possible?”

“Yaa Sayyidi. When I pray and I leave the masjid, I say, ‘Yaa Rabbee. If You give me life, I intend to come to the masjid again next Friday.”

Rasoolullah (s) said, innama ‘l-amalu bi ‘n-niyya, “Actions are according to the intentions.” This old man was truthful in his intention. He was not playing games. “Yaa Rabbee, I am coming.” Did you make that intention last Friday? Next time make the intention to be there before Fajr.

That is how he preceded you, by his intention. Why don’t you make an intention? When you perform Umrah or when you visit Madinatu ‘l-Munawwara `alaa sakina afdu ‘s-salatu wa ‘s-salam, when you visit Rasoolullah (s), when you visit Ka`bah al-Mu’azzama, when you visit Awliyaullah, say, “Yaa Rabbee. If You give me life to come here again, I am coming.” It will be written for you.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said that he intended to build 70,000 masjids. If you have a clean intention, if you are serious in your intention, if you intend to make a masjid every time you get some money, Allah (swt) will give you the reward of 70,000 even if you only build one or two. Intention is important.

That saint, Sayyidina Junayd (q) is teaching us a lesson. Your intention counts. Always intend. “Yaa Rabbee. If You keep me until next Ramadan, I will fast,” and it will be written for you. “If You allow me to live until next Eid, I will celebrate and pray `Eid with my brothers and sisters.” It will be written for you.

Learn from Awliyaullah. Always keep your intention for Allah (swt). “Yaa Rabbee. I am always present with You.” Their mind is always with Him. They don’t leave the masjid and run to the office. Do you see people running to their offices? The first thing they do is answer their pages. I used to do that. They can’t wait until the salam is complete. Before the second salam, the people are out. Where are they going? To business. Allah (swt) said you can spread out on the earth after the salah, no problem, but then your mind is in dunya. Did Rasoolullah (s) run outside the masjid? What did he do? Wa idha ra’aw tijaratan aw lahwan an fadhu ilayha wa tarakuka qa’iman

But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave thee standing. Say: "The (blessing) from the Presence of Allah is better than any amusement or bargain! and Allah is the Best to provide (for all needs)." (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 62:11)

When they see business, or buying and selling, fun and games. “It’s time to take the family to the carnival. It starts at 4 o’clock. You get a discount if you go early.” Bengalis like discounts. You get the wristband. If you go after 7, you pay full price. “No, namaz is finished, great. Let’s hop into the car and go to the carnival.” Your mind is in fun and games. Your mind is in buying and selling, in business. It’s written in the Holy Qur’an. Allah (swt) is teaching us how we are. Wa tarakuka qa’iman, and they leave you standing in the Divine Presence. Awliyaullah, Anbiyaullah, Rasoolullah (s), their minds and their hearts are always in the remembrance of Allah (swt). Their minds and hearts are not in the remembrance of dunya like us.

When you leave the masjid, always remember Allah (swt). Say, “Yaa Rabbee. I will come again. I prayed Dhuhr in jama`ah. I will come for Asr. I prayed Asr in jama`ah. I will come for Maghrib.” That is ribaat, to stay put in the way of Allah (swt), guarding against evil. Waiting for prayer after prayer as if you are protecting the borders of the Islamic countries and kingdoms. From whom? That is your heart. It is the container of iman and Islam. You are guarding your heart from Shaytan and his agents.

This is our way. It is not focused too much on outward knowledge, rather it’s the inward knowledge. It’s the correction of the hearts because Rasoolullah (s) said, in your body there is a piece of flesh. If it’s correct, all of you will be correct. If it’s incorrect, all of you will be incorrect. That is the heart. Awliyaullah target the heart. That heart has to be purified from the remembrance of dunya to the remembrance of Allah (swt). That is the way of Awliyaullah and Anbiyaullah.

They have worked for daru ‘l-baqa and left working for daru ‘l-fana. They are working for the dar that is everlasting, the land of Eternity. Awliyaullah are looking there. They left daru ‘l-fana. They left working for this dunya. They take what is enough for them and their families to stay in a shelter with food and they work more for daru ‘l-baqa. That is the way. Work more for Allah (swt). If you are not able to do that, at least make an intention.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said that on the Day of Judgement when the book is given to a servant, he will look into his book and say, “Yaa Rabbee. I think this is the wrong book. I did not do this or this. I don’t remember doing any of this.” Allah (swt) will say, “You did not do it but you had the intention to do it, so I wrote it for you.”

If you are not able to do it physically because you have responsibilities or you have some kind of obligations, do it by your intention. Say, “Yaa Rabbee. I am for You. I’m waiting for Asr. I’m waiting for Maghrib. I’m waiting for Isha.” Yes, you are in the hospital all day but you will be given a reward for all the time that you are waiting for worship and at the same time you’re helping others and keeping yourself and your family protected.

Make that intention. When you leave the masjid next time, say, “Yaa Rabbee. If You give me life, I will come again.” Don’t forget. Everybody forgets. Okay, in the masjid there will be biryani. Say, “This biryani was good today. Yaa Rabbee, I will come next week for the biryani.” Play tricks on your ego. Your ego likes the pleasures of food and drink and other stuff. “O my ego, let’s go again next Jumu`ah.” It asks you, “What is there for me? It’s only four walls, some carpet and I go up and down. What is this?” When you say, “There’s halwa, haleem, samosa,” it will come.

Come to the masjid. Come to Dhikrullah. Let your heart be connected to Allah (swt), not to dunya. Don’t become proud at the same time. So many think they are worshipers, they think they are zuhaad, left the dunya, but they are proud that they are better than others. They think they have a special place in the Divine Presence. The ego plays tricks on you. If you’re not good in dunya and you have left the positions you were in, at least be a good one in deen. Some people say, “I don’t want dunya anymore. I am going to be a shaykh. I am going to be a pir saab. I’m going to be a mawlana.” That is still not enough. Shahenshah in deen.

The ego plays tricks on you. It says, “You did not become a doctor. You did not become an engineer. You did not become a judge. You’re not anything special. Go to deen and become special there.” That is also a trick.

A person was walking and he had a metal pot in his hand. Whenever he would find a river or a stream or a well, he would lower the metal pot to collect water to drink. He said, “I am a good one. I am relying on my Lord. I leave this dunya and I am walking in the wilderness of Texas but I have a metal pot and a rope. I am better than you.” As Awliyaullah have narrated the story, he goes and reaches a well. He is thirsty so he lowers the rope. Lo and behold, the rope snaps. The rope and the metal pot fall into the well.

This man who thinks he has a special position with his Lord says, “Yaa Rabbee. I am not leaving without my metal pot.” He waits for hours and hours and nothing is coming. He sees a thirsty deer approaching the well. It sees the water and the water starts to come up. On top of the water is the pot. The deer drinks and the man takes his metal pot. He says, “Yaa Rabbee. Am I not worth to You as much as this deer? You gave the metal pot, the water and everything to this deer. Do I not have any value like this animal?”

He heard a voice say, “You came depending on the rope and the pot. It came depending on nothing. It came with no rope and no pot.” It’s a teaching. No matter how great you think you are, there are creatures that have more tawakkul than you. The birds are never worried as Rasoolullah (s) said. They go out in the morning hungry and they come back in the evening full. Why do you worry about your food? “I’m not able to get enough food on my table tonight.” No.

The deer came with nothing, no pot or rope. The man came with a rope and pot. Even if you think you are a dervish, a saint or somebody special, you have to get rid of that. An animal can be more special than you.

It is said that when Sayyidina Adam (a) was brought down to earth from Paradise, he was covered with the leaves of the fig tree. That is the only tree that allowed him to take from its leaves and cover his privates because that dress of Noor was taken away by sinning. When you sin, the dress of Noor is gone and instead of it comes the energy of Shaytan. When he came to earth, he felt lonely. A deer came and went around Sayyidina Adam (a) and he felt happy that he had some company. He offered them leaves from the fig tree. They ate. When they ate from the fig tree, they became more beautiful physically and their glands smell of musk, so inwardly they became beautiful and fragrant and outwardly they became beautiful and shining because they came to Sayyidina Adam (a) and he fed them the leaves.

They went back to their friends or family who saw their beauty and that their glandular secretions had changed to musk. They asked, “Where were you?”

“We were with Adam (a) and we ate leaves from the fig tree.”

The next day, a group of deer went to Adam (a) and he gave them leaves of the fig tree but they only became beautiful outwardly and inwardly they didn’t change. It was said to them, “You came to Sayyidina Adam (a) greedy, wanting something. The first group came to Adam (a) just for the love of Adam (a). You came to achieve something, to gain something from him.”

When you go to the majlis of Awliyaullah, don’t go there wanting things from them. “I want to be like them.” You are coming for a dunya goal. You go to Anbiyaullah or Awliyaullah for the love of their company, for the love of Nabiyullah, for the love of Rasoolullah (s), not to seek a goal or a target or if you have something in mind. Look at how tariqah teaches you about these subtle issues.

When you come with greed, you won’t get it because it’s for your ego. Allah (swt) won’t give something for the ego. The ego is an enemy of Allah (swt). You are supposed to crush it to make it a servant of Allah (swt). Who is the servant of whom? Is your ego making you its servant or are you making the ego your servant? If you obey your ego from the minute you wake up to the minute you sleep, you have become like a donkey that is riding you wherever it wants to go.

If you come with greed to Nabiyullah, to Safiyullah like they came to Adam (a), that, “We want to be something special” (...) why do they come to shuyookh? So they can elevate themselves over others. In tariqah we are taught to let go of all the bad characteristics like kibr, self-admiration, pride, etc. Even if you are a dervish with only a rope and a metal pot, don’t think you are better than an animal. An animal might have more value in the eyes of its Creator than you because you are coming with ujoob, “I am great. I am a big one. Look at how Allah (swt) will give me everything I want.” That is what Shaytan did. He admired himself, “I am this and that.” In the end, he was kicked out.

That is the path of Awliyaullah, to leave your desires, to leave your pride, to leave whatever it is that is not welcome by Awliyaullah and to tread their path. We can’t. It is difficult for us. May Allah (swt) forgive us. There are glad tidings given by Rasoolullah (s) to us. On the Day of Judgement, a man will come in front of the Meezan, the Scale, and on it will be ninety-nine scrolls full of bad things, but a small card will come and land on the other side and it will outweigh all of the scrolls. He will look and see written on that card, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah.”

Alhamdulillah. If you say, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” you will be saved on the Day of Judgement. That doesn’t mean you go and commit all the sins, but this is the Mercy of Allah (swt) to His servants that no matter how many mistakes you make, as long as you are steadfast on, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” and say that with full intention and sincerity, on the Day of Judgement, one, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” will toss up all the scrolls of bad deeds.

That’s why we say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” everyday. At Fajr time we say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” ten times. May Allah (swt) forgive us and allow us to be with Rasoolullah (s) with love. Don’t go to him wanting something. That is bad adab. Of course he gives.

I read a story about Sayyidina Uthman ibn Affan (r). He came to Rasoolullah (s) one day and offered him grapes as a gift. A beggar came to Rasoolullah (s) and said, “Can you give me something?” He gave him the grapes. Sayyidina Uthman (r) went to the beggar and said, “Take this dirham and give me the grapes.” The beggar gave the grapes back. Sayyidina Uthman went back to Rasoolullah (s) and said, “Yaa Sayyidee, a gift.” The beggar came back to Rasoolullah (s), “Can you please give me something.” He gives him the grapes and the beggar goes out. Sayyidina Uthman runs after him and says, “Here is another coin. Give me the grapes.” He goes back to Rasoolullah (s) and says, “Yaa Rasoolullah. This is a gift for you.” The beggar comes back a third time, so Rasoolullah (s) asks him, “Are you a businessman or are you a beggar?”

Rasoolullah (s) never turns anyone back. He will give you but don’t come to him asking for things. That is tarku ‘l-adab. If he grants you something, it is out of his grace and kindness. Inshaa-Allah, he will give us from what he loves and what he loves is the love of Allah (swt). That’s what you should seek. “Yaa Sayyidee. I want what’s in your heart.” What is in the heart of Rasoolullah (s)? Allah (swt). What is the heart of Awliyaullah? Rasoolullah (s). When you come to Awliyaullah, say, “Yaa Sayyidee. I want Rasoolullah who is in your heart. Can you let some of that Noor and some of that love flow to me?” They will through their secret channels. That is what you should seek at the door of Awliyaullah. Don’t seek recognition. Don’t seek fame. Don’t seek status. Don’t seek a position over others. When you come to the door of Awliyaullah, you are seeking the love of Rasoolullah (s) that they have in their hearts.

I heard my teacher say, al-muradu ‘l-mureed ash-shaykh. The mureed wants the shaykh, the shaykh wants Rasoolullah (s), and Rasoolullah (s) wants Allah (swt). The want of the seeker is the heart of his shaykh, not physicality. You have to go to what’s in the heart. What is in there? You will find out. The heart of Awliyaullah is a masjid fully decorated by Noor of Allah (swt) and Noor of Rasoolullah (s). That is the Misbah mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. “My Light is like a lamp. That lamp is in a flask.” That is your heart. In your heart there is a special place where the Noor of Allah (swt) comes through. That is the Sirr. From that Secret Channel, Allah (swt)’s Light reaches your heart. When that Light reaches your heart, it illuminates it. That zujaja becomes a luminous star from the light that is within. That is what you are seeking. You’re not seeking anything else from the shaykh. May Allah (swt) forgive us.

Sayyidina Dawud (a) wanted to see the Meezan. “Yaa Rabbee. Show me that scale where You will weigh the deeds of human beings.” It is said that He revealed the Meezan and each pan filled the east to the west. He asked, “Yaa Rabbee. How can anybody fill the pan with hasanaat?”

“Yaa Dawud. If I am happy with My servant, I will fill it with half a date.” That’s why Rasoolullah (s) said, avoid the Fire even with half a date. If you can’t find half a date, and this is related in Bukhari and Muslim, say a kind word. Tayyiba means “sweet,” either it’s sweet from its essence or sweet because it’s something nice to say. Kalimatu ‘t-Tayyiba of course is, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah. SubhaanAllah. Alhamdulillah.

Rasoolullah (s) is telling you to avoid the Fire with even half a date of sadaqah. If you cannot give half a date of sadaqah, at least recite Kalimatu ‘t-Tayyiba. Of course that means, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah, but it also means a kind word, something that will make your brother or sister happy, a kind word that will make their hearts open up. Do you say kind words or do you say, bad words? Half-half.

He asked, “Yaa Rabbee. How can anybody fill this pan with hasanaat that’s from east to west?” Allah (swt) said, “If I am happy with My servant, I will fill it with half a date.” Try. Look at the Mercy of Allah (swt). Give half a date. Say a kind word. Make Dhikrullah. If you cannot go through the way Awliyaullah went, at least Allah (swt) has given you a door to His Mercy. Be busy with that, O Muslim. Don’t involve yourself in the dunya too much. You’re going to leave and go. Dunya is not for you nor was it for the ones before you. How many people before you were deceived? How many people said, “I’m going to work, work, work and make, make, make,” and at the end what happens? They go like this.

Dunya should not be for collecting money and to be deceived, rather it should be used for Akhirah. Akhirah is Jannah. Use your dunya to gain access to Jannah. If Allah (swt) gave you, use it to gain access to Jannah. If Allah (swt) didn’t give you, use your tongue, your body with a kind word, with Dhikrullah to gain access to Jannah. That’s what you do in dunya, O insaan. Inshaa-Allah, we can do all of that.

To sum it up, make the intention to go to Jumu`ah every time you leave the masjid. “Yaa Rabbee. I will be here again. The next time You call, I will be present.” That is one. The second is, don’t be proud of your amal. Don’t say, “I am a big one.” An animal can be better than you. Go to Waliyullah seeking the love they have in their hearts, not going to seek status so you can be like the deer that is outwardly beautiful and inwardly beautiful. And you can fill the Meezan with half a date of sadaqah or with, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah. One, Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah, is enough. If you say it truthfully, you are given the bishara of Jannah. Inshaa-Allah, we can be from them. Ameen.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

I’m sorry if I put people to sleep but that’s my skill. I can read you a good bedtime story, no problem. What can you do? Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) told us so many times that Allah (swt) told us in the Holy Qur’an: nahnu naqussu `alayka ahsana ‘l-qasas. We are telling you the best of stories. Surah Yusuf.

We do relate unto thee the most beautiful of stories, in that We reveal to thee this (portion of the) Qur'an: before this, thou too was among those who knew it not. (Surah Yusuf, 12:3)

When Allah (swt) tells a story, He tells a story for wisdom. Stories are the easiest things to work with. In the Holy Qur’an it says, faqsusi ‘l-qasas lalahum yatta faqaroon. Tell them stories so they can ponder and contemplate and think about it. Stories are easy, so I tell stories. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to tell stories. Mawlana Shaykh Hisham used to tell stories.

[“Alam” means dunya.] Oh, he’s the shah of dunya. It’s obvious. Don’t worry, I prayed for Shahzaman to be higher than you. Inshaa-Allah, he will be the boss of Remax. May Allah (swt) give you barakah in your house. May Allah (swt) give you barakah in your health, in your wealth. You are ghani that is shakir. You are a rich man that is grateful and uses the ni`mah of Allah (swt) in what He pleases. You invited people for Dhikrullah and namaz and Allah (swt) loves that. You are not using your money other than in its place. You are using the money in its place. This has become a musalla. People prayed here, so it’s a musalla. May Allah (swt) give you more and your wife and your family the best here and Hereafter and all those who are here. May Allah (swt) give you the best here and Hereafter. Ameen, yaa Rabbee.
