Do Not Claim Something that Does Not Belong to You

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

14 March 2013 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

Suhbah after Khatm

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Kalimataan khafeefataan `alaa ‘l-lisaan thaqeelataan fi ‘l-meezan subhaanAllah wa bi-hamdihi subhaanAllahi ‘l-`Azheem astaghfirullah. Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah, nawaytu 'r-riyaadah, nawaytu 's-sulook, lillahi ta`alaa fee haadha 'l-masjid.

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Dastoor yaa Sayyidee, madad!

This dunya is, I am not going to say to leave it, because many people say, “Leave dunya and run for Akhirah,” but anyone who claimed that, I don’t think he left dunya and ran for Akhirah. People might try to, they try to say that to their students, “Leave dunya, leave money, look for Akhirah,” and alhamdulillah that is great, but we don’t feel this is what we can do. It is not an easy task to do it. To leave dunya means to completely leave dunya as if you are dead, in complete submission to Allah (swt), and not everyone can do that. Even awliyaullah throughout their lives they are wali, but they cannot reach that level as it is not easy.

If you listen to what people are trying to say or if we speak about this Naqshbandi Sufi Order that we are in, can you tell me which representative is leaving dunya and looking for Akhirah? Which one? Name a name and we will find if it is true or not. It is impossible. So it is not...when you say something that you are not convinced of, when it comes from your mouth it is not real and angels will curse you. So it is better to say, “Yaa Rabbee, save us as we are so connected to dunya, yaa Rabbee save us; so that You make us in Akhirah with the Prophet (s)! We cannot do it.”

People might claim in their teaching to leave dunya and run to Akhirah. How to run for Akhirah? Every move you make in today’s life there is a sin! When you go in public there is a sin. If you don’t hide yourself in the jungle, every moment you might fall into a sin. Even if you are in a jungle and you are walking, and you think you are in a jungle so you don’t do a sin, you are doing many sins and you don’t feel them, like if you step on an animal and kill that animal, even an ant, you will be responsible.

Sayyidina Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q), one of the great shaykhs of the Golden Chain, said, “Yaa Rabbee, give me power to make two raka`ats for You, that I will not have any gossips coming to my head. I want to pray two raka`ats perfectly, in a way that no one living in my time was able to do!”

Can you do it? He wanted to do it.

Then a voice came from Heaven, saying, “Do it!”

Sayyidina Bayazid (q) said, “Allahu Akbar,” and he began to pray for a long time; half-an-hour passed, one hour passed, longer, then he became tired, so he continued until he finished, then said, “As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi, as-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi,” and he thought, “This was perfect!”

And a voice came in his heart, saying, “Yaa Bayazid! You are the biggest zhaalim, oppressor! Who are you? You think yourself something, that you want to pray two raka`ats that no one prayed like you? Since you claimed that, I balanced these two raka`ats with My Heavenly Balance and your two raka`ats are rejected in your face!”

Sayyidina Bayazid (q) said, “Yaa Rabbee, what did I do?”

“Yaa Bayazid, you leaned on your right leg more than you leaned on your left leg. although I said to establish the weight!”

Wa aqeemu 'l-wazna bi ’l-qisti wa laa tukhsiru 'l-meezaan.

So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance. (Surat ar-Rahman, 55:9)

“You did not balance both legs together, you leaned on the right leg more than on the left leg and that’s zhulm, oppression to your leg, so your prayers are thrown out.”

Allahu Akbar! Where are our prayers then? What are we running and thinking? “I am the deputy, I am the representative, I am the shaykh!” People are fighting online, sending video clips, saying, “I am the shaykh!” (...)

Look at Abu Bayazid al-Bistami (q). He is a wali that no wali came like him in his time, and he wanted to pray two raka`ats and was called, “Yaa Zhalim, O Oppressor!” and you are running to be called ‘deputy’ or ‘representative’? Yes. Be careful as Allah’s Scale is difficult. I am worried, you are worried, everyone is worried because if you claim, “I am representative,” and you are not doing what you need to do, then you are not a real representative. They might give you that (title) as an order to make you happy with your ego, we don’t know. What did the Prophet (s) do to the Sahaabah (r)? He perfected their manners, he raised them up. That’s why he (s)said:

أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم

As-haabee ka 'n-nujoom bi ayyihim aqtadaytum ahtadaytum.

My Companions are like stars (on a dark night); whichever of them you follow, you will be guided.

(`Abd ibn Humayd, ad-Daraqutnee, ibn `Adiyy, ibn `Abd al-Barr,

with weak chains but the meaning is sound.)

Too many, not one Sahaabah, but there are 124,000 Sahaabah. Do we say there are only two, three, four? No, there is a long line. Until you reach that, follow the footsteps of awliyaullah in everything, do not only collect dunya. We know and we are not blind! We know who is collecting dunya and how much they are collecting and how much they claim to be deputies, and we can expose them, but what is the benefit? Leave them in their blindness.

Fee zhulumaatihim ya`amahoon.

Leave them blind in their darkness.

The Prophet (s) warned us, what did he say? In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad (r) as narrated from Abi Dharr (r), the Prophet (s) said:

إني أرى ما لا ترون وأسمع

Innee araa maa laa tarawn.

Indeed, I see what you do not see. (Musnad)

Finished, that’s enough! “I see what you don’t see” means Prophet (s) sees everything, because he is speaking to humanity and he was sent to humanity, he was not only sent to 124,000 Saahabah but to the whole universe. “We have sent you Rahmatan lil-`Alameen.” Prophet (s) is sent to the whole universe and to all jinn and ins, and he said, “I see what you don’t see and I hear what you don’t hear.”

Innee araa maa laa tarawna wa asma`u maa laa tasma`oon, atta as-samaau wa huqqa lahaa an tu’itta maa feehaa mawdi`u arba`i asaabi`a illa wa malakun waadi`un jabhatahu saajidan lillah. W’Allahi law ta`lamoona maa `aalamu la-dahaktum qaleelan wa la-bakaytum katheera wa maa taladhadhtum bi’n-nisaa’ `alaa’l-furushi wa la-kharajtum ilaa’s-su`udaat tajaaroona ila’Allahi la-wadidtu annee kuntu shajaratan ta`dad.

I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The heaven makes a noise like groaning, and it has the right to (or it is no surprise), for there is no space in it the width of four fingers, but there is an angel there, placing his forehead in sujood (prostration) to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, you would not enjoy yourselves with your wives in bed and By Allah! I wish that Allah would have created me as a tree whose fruit is eaten."

(Reported by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and al-Hakim)

“I hear what you don’t hear and I see what you don’t see.” What did he see? Attat as-samaa’ wa haqalaha an ta`id, “The sky spoke and was afraid, (saying) ‘Yaa Rabbee, forgive me!’”

Allah (swt) said:

Inna `aradnaa al-amaanata `ala ‘s-samaawati wa ‘l-ardi wa ‘l-jibaali fa-abayna an yahmilnaahaa wa ashfaqnaa minhaa wa hamalahaa ‘l-insaanu innahu kaana zhalooman jahoola.

We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains, but they refused to undertake it, being afraid, but Man undertook it. Lo! He hath proved a tyrant and a fool.

(Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:72)

“We have offered the Trust,” means to the deputies, khalifahs on Earth. “We have offered the Trust to Heavens and Earth, but fa-abayna an yahmilnaahaa wa ashfaqnaa minhaa , they refused to carry it and they said no; they were scared to carry it.” How are you out of the blue declaring yourself, or someone declared you to be something and even Heaven and Earth said, “No, we don’t want to carry that Trust!” And instead of running away, you are holding with all your hands and feet even, holding that Trust. That is our weakness. Those who are claiming to carry something of leadership, whose leadership? They call you to say about a program to teach “Leadership.” Leadership in what? First perfect your manners before you become a leader: don’t be angry, don’t show anger! Awliyaullah do not show anger. Don’t be angry. Don’t believe rumors that people are throwing into your mind and your ears from those who claim to be representatives of the tariqah today; don’t believe it, check it before you fall into a problem!

Yaa ayyuhal-ladheena aamanoo in ja’akum faasiqun bi naba'in fa-tabayyinoo an tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin fatusbihoo `alaa maa fa`ltum naadimeen.

O you who believe! If a corrupt person comes to you with something wrong, ascertain the truth, unless you harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:6)

An tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalah, check it before you say it or you might harm someone and although you are ignorantly harming him, you don’t know that you are harming him because you believed something false. Today, who is checking if the rumor is true or not? They hear something and immediately they accept it. Go first and check it! That’s why Prophet (s) said, “I hear what you don’t hear and I see what you don’t see.” If Heavens and Earth refused the Trust, why are you taking it? Allah (swt) is saying in the Holy Qur’an, wa hamalahaa ‘l-insaanu innahu kaana zhalooman jahoola, “Human beings carried it and they were oppressors to themselves to carry it.” They were ignorant to carry it, to accept it and it would have been better to say, “Yaa Rabbee, we are scared, we cannot carry it!” Then it’s finished, you will all be angels. Attat as-samaa’ wa haqalaha an ta`id, “Heavens were scared and it is right to be scared.”

Prophet (s) said:

Maa feehaa mawdi`un mawdi`u `arba`a asaabi innamaa `alayhi malakun saajid.

You cannot find in this universe and in Heavens in the skies a place of four fingers where there is not an angel in sajda. (Reported by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and al-Hakim)

The Prophet (s) is seeing and hearing them, so how are you running after dunya and collecting money, saying you are a wali? Allahu Akbar! Don’t claim something you cannot carry! Too many are claiming to be awliyaullah, but you see their actions are the opposite. May Allah forgive us.

The Prophet (s) said that in this universe every four fingers there is an angel making sajda, so look here, here in this area, every four fingers there must be an angel making sajda, they don’t stop. Prophet (s) is seeing them. law ta`lamoona maa `aalam la-dahaktum qaleelan wa la-bakaytum katheera, “If you knew what I know, you would have smiled a little bit in your life and the rest of your life you’d be crying.” Is anyone crying? Where people are crying? Forget people who say, “We left dunya, we love Akhirah,” no problem, leave them as they are free, but those who say, “We are leaving dunya and only living for Akhirah,” and you see them the most rich and they have everything, we know some of them and we can expose them at anytime, but we don’t do that. Instead we say, “Yaa Rabbee, forgive us!” If He forgives us, it is better than exposing anyone, for what to expose? They are responsible. So this is addressed to those who claim they are perfect and they consider themselves awliya now, in the time of their shaykh, which is not nice! And some of them say, “Even if the shaykh goes, we do not follow anyone he appoints, we follow our desires!” They say it in public and we have a video clip of it.

So Prophet (s) said, law ta`lamoona maa `aalam la-dahaktum qaleelan wa la-bakaytum katheera, “If you know what I know, you would have been smiling a little and crying all your time, wa maa taladhadhtum bi an-nisaa’ `ala ‘l-furush, and you would never have enjoyed the love between husband and wife, you will drop it from your eyes, you will not look after it,” because you are crying, you want to save yourself.

Although a man sleeps with his wife or your wife is sleeping with you, that is taking sins away. As much as you are touching, that much sins are going. You know that? You don’t know? Make wudu and pray two raka`ats and go to bed; if you touch your wife’s hand it is sunnah, sins will go from your fingers, they will drop from all your fingers!

“You will not have desire anymore, wa la-kharajtum ila as-sua`adaat taj’aroona ila-Llah, and you would be running to the desert or to the outside.”

Fafirroo ila-Allah.

Flee to God (from all that is false and evil)! (Surat adh-Dhaariyaat, 51:50)

Malja, shelter, there is no shelter except to run to Allah (swt). When Abi Dharr (r) heard that from the Prophet (s). he said, w’Allahi la-wadadtu annee shajaratun ta`adad, “I wished when the Prophet (s) said that, that I was a tree that people are cutting or animals are biting.”

Kunnaa m`a an-nabi sall-Allahu `alayhi wa sallama fee janaazatin falammaa antahayna ila ’l-qabri qa`ada `ala saaqihi fa-ja`ala yuraddidu basarahu feehi thumma qaal: Yudghatu feehi ’l-mu’minun daghdatun tazooloo minhaa hama’iluhu wa yumlaa’u `ala al-kaafiri naaran.

Abi Dharr (r) said in another hadith, “We were with the Prophet (s) at a funeral, when we reached the grave and we were burying the janaza, the Prophet (s) sat on his legs and began to look at the deceased person, and he (s) said, a mu’min at that moment of going to the grave will press on himself and everything dirty will go out and on the unbeliever, his grave will be filled with fire and until the Day of Judgment he is in fire.”

O Muslims! I don’t want to be longer than that as we have to be careful of what we are doing, but I will mention this hadith:

Qaala rasoolullahi (s): man sharib al-khamr marratan lam yaqbalillaahu lahu salaatan arba`eena sabaahan fa in taaba taab Allahu `alayhi.

Whoever drinks wine one time, Allah will reject his prayers for forty days even if he repents.

(Tirmidhi)

Man sharib al-khamr lam yaqbalillaahu lahu salaatan arba`eena sabaahan. Whoever drinks even one sip of wine or liquor, Allah (swt) will not accept his Salaat al-Fajr for forty days. Your prayer will be thrown in your face. One sip of liquor, even if you are praying, for forty days these prayers are thrown in your face! If you repent Allah will forgive you, even if you come back a second time, or a third time Allah will forgive you, but if you come back a fourth time, Allah (swt) will give you the sweat of unbelievers in Hellfire to drink. You will be drinking their sweat, you will be drinking their sin, you will be thrown in Hellfire and your prayers will be thrown in your face! If you do it once you are forgiven, twice forgiven, three times forgiven; for those who convert everything before is cleared out so they are newly born.

May Allah forgive us and forgive everyone, and may we not claim something that doesn’t belong to us. Yaa Rabbee, we are asking forgiveness! May Allah forgive us.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
